  1. So plans fell through and I found myself with just the littlest kid at home, so figured, "What the heck? Play some CoH!". (Actually, that's my typical response to everything.)

"While I'm here, might as well get the inspiration. Only 15 minutes left!"

Did Professor Echo program the market, so it doesn't run on regular time? If I purchase this, will Echo appear and give it to me 10 years ago?

First time I've seen this, but I rarely hit up the market when something has less than a hour left. Seems like a pretty bad mistake that could have been easily fixed a long time ago.

I'm no master of binds/macros, but I can point you to a really nice guide:

    Just like they say:

Build a man a fire, he'll be warm for a night.
Set a man on fire, he'll stay warm for the rest of his life.

    ...or something like that.
  3. If you ever are left wondering if something you have already slotted is actually doing anything, click "Combat Effects" (I think that's the wording... it's beside the "Incarnate Abilities" link on the top left of your powers tray). This will show you exactly what is modifying what. I believe all the procs that directly affect you, such as LOTG and Knockback Resistance will show up here. That also helps you get a much better understanding of many of the effects in the game.

Of course, it doesn't help much before you slot it. In that case, the training room could be helpful.

That's true. It's a 24hour span, so it's got to be Friday for the full time somewhere. Just wish it was Friday a bit more in the US during that time. But that's just me being greedy. Seems worse for the west coast. For someone who's working until 5pm or at school probably only has Thursday to claim these.

I'll just try to remember to hit it up before bed on Thursdays.
  5. Unfortunately, popping that will not defend me from three kids attacking me with thier "BUT WE WANT TO GO NOW!" powers, so I'll have to pass.

    Thanks!
  6. What is the "randomly static" item this week? I'll only have a few moments between coming home for work and heading out to dinner and wanted to know if it's worth booting up and logging in for (and risking the wrath of family telling me to "get off that game so we can go eat").

Wish this lasted longer than 7pm EST Friday. I'll need to remember that Freebie Friday is really "Freebie Late Evening Thrusday".

Really need to check the URL. Probably thought this was Craigslist.

On topic, I would suggest trying /Traps. My Thugs/Traps was capable of surviving "well" in the few ambush AE missions I ran him through. I suppose with more dedication, the combination could probably do respectably.

    Freebie Friday

Anyone have a time machine? It only has to go back about 3 days. I need to pop up behind someone and strangle him until he passes out. I don't want to kill him, because that would still technically be "suicide" regardless of the odd circumstances. Just before things fade to black, I'll whisper, "They are not random, everyone gets the same thing, and the froth that will fly from the thread you plan to create is just disgusting."

I think, in the end, we can all agree on one thing: Nothing is truly "free". In this case, you are paying with time, regardless how extremely short that time it. Everyone will value that time differently. To some, the time is worth more than an XP Booster or Team Inspiration. To others, they are breaking even or getting something much, much more valuable.

Probably a good analogy is the Day Jobs. Those are "free" powers that are available to us anytime, not just Fridays. All you have to do is take the time to go to a specific spot to log out. And, I swear, I have never, ever heard someone say, "Ok, let me log out and log in my <Insert AT Here>. Oh, wait, first I have to go to a Hopsital so I can get the non-combat regen bonus when I log back in." I'm sure someone does that, but since shortly after I13, I haven't heard it. I know I haven't done that since... ever. The tiny, temporary boost just isn't worth the time of heading to somewhere when I log out.

I can't speak for everyone, nor will I try. I can only speak for myself. All joking and hyperbole aside, I will likely not take the time to claim the free items if they are inspirations as I never use them anyways, and I likely won't take the time to get an XP Booster unless I'm already planning on playing that Friday. I don't feel any of the inspirations are even worth clicking on the market icon for, and the XP Booster isn't worth me logging into COH specifically for, even if I am just sitting around the house that day. Perhaps I'm just not the target demographic. I'm good with that.

(But, and this goes back to the insane OP, I have a gambler's heart. I would log in every Friday like clockwork for my 1 chance in 1000 for getting a Super Booster instead of the inspiration or XP Booster that you get the other 999 times. Again, that's me.)

Boiled down, people are arguing over perceived value. We can only agree to disagree on that. (Wow, "agree to disagree". That's awesome! Someone write that one down! I'm like a modern day Ben Franklin here.)
  9. It's always great to wake to a gift from Father X-mas! Many thanks for the info. Yes, it's PCI Express.

Am I crazy? Didn't we at one point have a "hardware" forum?
  10. Yep, graphics card died. Now, I could have sworn we had a dedicated place for hardware questions, but I don't see it now.

I'm looking for suggestions for a replacement. This computer is being handed down to the family, but it still needs to be able to run coh. The six year old loves City of Dolls. Especially since the dolls can breath fire, and I can't blame her. Anywho....

The card was a GeForce 8600 gts pci. Machine is running vista. I'm shooting for a relatively cheap replacement, say under $100, that still can run coh non-ultra mode respectably. Of course, costing less is better. I'm already planning on dropping 1500 or so on a new gaming machine.

I'm likely giving way too little info here. Let me know what you think and if I need to give some more info. While I've programmed computers for 25+years, hardware has never been my strong suit.

    Freebie Friday

Sweet b-Jebus. 3 pages? I was a fool for misunderstanding "random". A fool!

"Free" can be not worth it. If Kmart promoted that it was giving out free stuff if you show up in person, and I get there to get a bag of Ramen noodles, I'd be pretty ticked off. It would be a waste of my time and money (gas) for a twenty cent item. However, if I was already at Kmart for some other reason, it's just a free item.

If you are playing Friday, the freebie Friday item could be anything and it would be worth it. It literally takes what, 30 seconds to click the couple buttons to claim it? But it you're not at your computer Friday, then , yeah, it might not be worth running to your computer, logging in and hitting the store for a consumable item.

Still, some chance at getting something "spiffy" would be better, IMHO. Even like one in 1000 chance at a bigger thing would give a little excitement to it. People would log in here and see folks brag about getting a rocket board, rare pet or something like that. Others might be more interested in logging into the market and getting the freebie item.

Umm, yeah. My idea of "Random" must not match that of whoever crafted the announcement. There is nothing random in it for us, regardless how someone running the Freebie Fridays determines what's given away.

I love random. This is not random. Well, sorta is: they randomly used the word "Random". The concept is great even with a set gift, but they should update the announcement. It's confusing.

    Freebie Friday

Well, no one has done it yet, so I'll be "that guy".

What are people getting for Freebie Friday? From what I get from the announcement, you get something random. Both my daughter and I got an XP booster (1 charge). I actually burn through those rather fast, so I'm quite happy.

Otherwise, I was hoping to get a Lindsay Lohan pet temp power. It must be the confusing name.

(Edit: Heroes could get a Jamie Lee Curtis pet, villains a Lindsay Lohan.... off to the suggestions forums I go!)

Could imagine them giving out one free IO from a set. That might inspire folks to purchase others in the set, especially if it's a set that people like to complete. Team inspirations would be good, too, perhaps to try to peak more interest in them.

Another interesting possibility is something new, like a new travel power along the lines of the hoverboard or a new pet or spiffy costume piece. After that, put it up for sale. People who didn't get it for free will see others with it and may have people decide they just gotta get it.
  15. To my knowledge, nothing has changed since Issue 21 (when it went free-to-play). Some possibilities:

    - You're not high enough level yet for the next contact to show up for you. Gain a few more levels. I have completely ran contacts out of missions in a matter of a level or two with Stalkers before.
    - Run Police Scanner/Newspaper missions and complete the Safeguard/Mayhem mission. The detective/broker should give you an option to gain a new contact.
    - Visit a few zones. I've had contacts realize I existed only after zoning.
    - Call in or visit all your old contacts (including inactive). They may have a lead to a new contact.

The reason for delayed attack is probably a hold-over from the zombie invasion. Remember that the zombies take 15 minutes (might be exaggerating there) to climb out of the ground, during which you can't ST attack them. IF that is the case, bad programmer, no cookie! It's the same thing that ticks me off how some of the pet summoning powers don't work while flying, while others do. It appears to just be a bad case of "where did I copy the code from". Eventually, you have 15 copies of nearly the same code and nobody wants to try to get them all to work the same way.

Just ran into this same thing here at work. Gotta get home and beat up bad guys to blow off steam. After that, I'll log into COH.

This. Both AoE and pets are happy to wail on things that, apparently, your character wants to "give a fighting chance" after summoning sickness (sorry, "they don't have haste..." nevermind....).

I forgot how fustrating it can be until I not much to do with my lv32 Dual Blades brute but continually spam his spin attack over and over and hope to connect with something.

More on topic... actually, I have nothing. This entire thread was just silly. Complaining that the devs didn't spend time creating a unique model for the Prae's is like complaining that the Oro-portal isn't different between heroes and villains.

Although next time I go to a bar, I will ask for a Praetorian Chaser and see what happens.
  19. Another thing that I don't think was mentioned was your mission settings. If you have bosses turned off, your allies may end up being Lts. This is usually hillariouslly fatal. (OK, maybe I shouldn't laugh as the allies get gunned down, but someone has to.)

Even if I'm running a squishy solo and have bosses off, if I find out I have a "hostage-with-a-death-wish" mission coming up, I turn the bosses on at least for that mission.

Otherwise, my ideas are all posted above: TP the person leading away from the hostage, kill all but one mob in the group holding the hostage, run from them like they have the plague...

Another possible tactic is to get into a fight that the hostage can't possibly lose (beating on a force field generator or mission objective) and ditch him like an ugly blind date at a sushi resturant.

It's a major reason I love CoH and hate, well, damn near all other MMOs. I think every other game I ran into the same, stupid "Kill Billgong the Level 15 Orc King" mission, where Billgong spawns in exactly the same spot in the open world every 5 minutes, has the 1% chance of dropping the "Ubre-Sword of Orc Slaying" that everyone wants, and has 15 people Level 45 camping the spot 24 hours a day.

It's really difficult to create "open world" content. Either it's good enough to have hoards of players swamping it, bad enough that no one wants to bother, or the server's population is small enough that those few people can enjoy it.

Back on topic, "temporary server transfers" sound great. I mean, if the devs could overcome the insanely huge issues with such a concept, I'm all for it. But, in reality, this is a case of "Belling the Cat": The "solution" just isn't realistic.

Just creating an "Cross-Server Instanced Mission Server" might be a momentous task, but I highly suspect it would be more feasible than trying to allow everyone to transfer servers at will.

On one hand, yes, it was a very simple and limited re-skin of the the Rikti Invasion, and not particularly well thought out (IMHO). That gas is just a bit much in a small area for lowbies, but at least we don't have 100,000 stacks of Vengence going on.

On the other hand, I really wasn't expecting anything anyhow. So, anything is better than nothing at all. It's not like they were required to give us an epic song and dance. Honestly, I'd be happy to see a random "OMG! It's a Hellion invasion! It's Helliongeddon!!!" day than nothing at all.

Or just an invasion of Sappers. Thousands of them. Wow, that would be annoying.

I think everyone does. It's just common sense. Someone needs to get on the ball with this, since I would imagine the market is a good chunk of CoH's bread and butter now. Making it more user-friendly should be a major concern. Personally, I feel it's enough of an issue that I'd be happy to have "game content" pushed back to get someone in there until it's fixed.

It definitely won't let you re-buy something you already purchased. I ran into this when I was trying to figure out how many of the "Extra Auction House Storage" thingies I had already purchased. It was a while ago, but I think it didn't tell me "NO" until I clicked to confirm the purchase.

Those "extra storage" items are a really good example of why they need this functionality. If you occasionlly purchase extra storage (like I did), how are you supposed to know which of them you purchased (1 of 10, 4 or 10, 7 of 10, ect)?

Costume bundles will be an issue, I'm sure. Perhaps it should tell how how many parts in the bundle you already own ("You own 3 of 8 parts"), even if it doesn't tell you which parts exactly.

Edit: As a "work-a-round" (and I HATE work-a-rounds...) you can flag the items you buy with the "wish list" function. That stands out rather nicely. Why they can't use the same basic concept for "owned items", I'm just not certain.
  25. Thanks for the info BP. I didn't realise the points would be at the end of the month.

She's just looking to craft wings. As a "VIP-4-Lifer" myself, I'm making some assumptions, but I would guess that after she crafts the wings, they will be available on that character after the VIP status expires. After that, we can use the 400 points toward other costume parts.
