Help me understand Procs please!

Probably a question most of you guys understand already but I'm a bit lost...

I am trying to figure out how the Procs work in general. I mean if I have the 20% slow resistance in SJ for instance, will it only apply if I'm using super jump currently? Or does it just apply all the time? Same with like LoTG 7.5% recharge, if it's in a toggle is it only going to apply while the toggle is on? Or in a click, will it only apply when the power is used? They are a bit confusing to me. I just want to make sure I'm slotting these things in the right spot to make use of the bonus's.

Thanks for being patient with me.

All of those you named are global 'procs', just slotting them gives you the benefit and they're always on.

Similarly, any knockback protection procs do the same. You don't have to have the power on, it'll just work.

Actually, those are Global Effect IOs, which is a bit different than a Proc.

It is always on, regardless of if the power is on. Unless you exempt more than three levels below the level of the IO. I will even work (assuming the IO is low enough) if you exempt below the level where you even have access to the power.

For example... You take SJ late in your build, say at lvl 49, and slot it with a lvl 49 slow resistance. It works fine at lvl 49, and at lvl 50, with SJ on or not. If you exempt to lvl 45, you lose you slow resistance (more than the unde the lvl 49 IO) but can still SJ, as you keep powers up to 5 levels under while exempted. YOu later decide that losing slow resistance is a pain, so you put in a lvl 12 IO in SJ. Now you can exempt to lvl 9, and while you would have lose SJ the power, you'd still have the slow resistance. At lvl 8 and under, you'd have neither.

Procs are IOs that have a certain chance to fire when the power is activated. That chance can occasionally be 100%, though, which leads to some of the confusion between procs and globals. So, for a proc to work, the power has to be available, and active (via an always on power or a toggle power toggled 'on' or the power has to be clicked and it'll last for a given time after the click). Obviously, if you exempt below the level of the power, you lose the benefit of the proc, too. But, procs levels don't matter. If you put a lvl 50 proc in a power you selected at lvl 8, it'll work the same at lvl 50, and it would exempted to lvl 5. AS long as you still have the power, the proc works the same.

And no worries at all. This part of the game is pretty silly confusing. Needlessly confusing, I'm almost tempted to say..

If you ever are left wondering if something you have already slotted is actually doing anything, click "Combat Effects" (I think that's the wording... it's beside the "Incarnate Abilities" link on the top left of your powers tray). This will show you exactly what is modifying what. I believe all the procs that directly affect you, such as LOTG and Knockback Resistance will show up here. That also helps you get a much better understanding of many of the effects in the game.

Of course, it doesn't help much before you slot it. In that case, the training room could be helpful.

CoH has been unique in the sea of cloned MMOs.There are years of possibilities still
in such a well designed, well supported and well loved game.Shutting it down now doesn't
make sense on any level except, perhaps, on some spreadsheets bottom line. I do not
consider this an act of a company that has the interests of its customers at heart. This
calls into question why I would want to be part of any further ventures involving NCSoft.

Thank you all for your help! And the wiki link too...why couldn't I find it?!?

This helps immensely to understand what all the new sets I purchased yesterday have done to make my tank much closer to Epic than she was. (Had sets before but I respec'd and fixed her weakness's rather well)

Again THANKS!

Now, when you say purchased, do you mean you purchased them off the auction house (Wentworths/Black Market) or you purchased them off of the Paragon Market with points? Because the SBE (Store Bought Enhancements) opens up a slightly different set of rules, as they are Attuned.

Set bonuses (which is how the Global IOs work, they are a set bonus of "1") work even if a pwoer is unavailable from exemplar, as long as you are no more than three levels below the level(s) of the enhancement(s) granting the set bonus.

All the ones on my tank are WW/merit purchase/drops. I did buy a LoTG and Basilisk set for another character awhile back while they were on sale and took a look at those. Thanks for the clarification!

And I did get to try her(tank) out in an ITF. She can take a lot of aggro now but she seems to suddenly become slightly squishy after a few minutes under constant attack. The toggles haven't dropped, click powers were on and endurance was still 2/3 full. I don't know what does it. In normal missions things are dead too quick for this to happen.

So basically if I have level 50 enh then when I exemp down for a low level tf I'm going to lose the global bonuses unless I have the power at my exemplar level?
(Did I even say that right? lol)

Again thanks for the help everyone!

Global IOs: work until you're too low for the enhancement.
-- A level 50 global will work until you exemplar below level 47, even if the power is available. (set bonuses work this way also)

Proc IOs: work until you're too low for the power.
-- A level 50 proc will work until you exemplar too low to access the power it is slotted in. (note some IOs that SEEM like globals are actually PROCS, like Numi's regen/recov)

A lot of Cimerorans enemy types debuff your defence, so after each time you get hit, you get more likely to be hit again.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

A quickie list of special IOs (I'm not 100% sure how up to date it is, it has all the basics...it doesn't have ATOs for sure, and PPM rate isn't included for SBE versions)

Thank you for reminding me! I feel a bit silly. This makes loads of sense. I need to heal faster so I'll be off these stupid meds that clog my brain during gaming!

And thank you Aggelakis for the info. Got it bookmarked now.

Since I haven't said it yet.... I love the forums. I've been nervous about posting and getting unpleasantness from others. Happens on the CoH FB constantly. (What's up with all the negativity!) Everyone who has responded has been friendly and quick to help. My non-gaming family and friends wonder why I'm still on this game after 8 years. This is why! Friendly players and a great game.

Note that Purple IO and PVP IO bonuses ignore the level drop when you

If the IO mentions a duration of 120s (specifically for 120s after use of the power if slotted in a click power) then it's a proc-like enhancement, not a global. That's the easy way to tell.
