Dead graphics card
I will assume PCIe and not PCI (sadly not even close to the same thing). Of course if you do mean PCI, you are likely to be disappointed.
Fortunately the relative performance of the 8600GTS is now considered extremely poor so an inexpensive card should be able to give you equal or even improved performance.
I would look for a GT 440 with GDDR5 memory (there are also versions with DDR3 memory but 1GB of faster memory is better than 2GB of slower, of course either is better than none). This assumes you have a PCIe x16 slot and not the much older and not really designed for a gaming video card PCI slot.
Whatever you do, stay away from the GT 520, not really meant for gaming, at all. It's significantly slower than either the GT 430 or 440.

It's always great to wake to a gift from Father X-mas! Many thanks for the info. Yes, it's PCI Express.
Am I crazy? Didn't we at one point have a "hardware" forum?
CoH has been unique in the sea of cloned MMOs.There are years of possibilities still
in such a well designed, well supported and well loved game.Shutting it down now doesn't
make sense on any level except, perhaps, on some spreadsheets bottom line. I do not
consider this an act of a company that has the interests of its customers at heart. This
calls into question why I would want to be part of any further ventures involving NCSoft.

But 8600GTS is probably PCIe.
Yep, graphics card died. Now, I could have sworn we had a dedicated place for hardware questions, but I don't see it now.
I'm looking for suggestions for a replacement. This computer is being handed down to the family, but it still needs to be able to run coh. The six year old loves City of Dolls. Especially since the dolls can breath fire, and I can't blame her. Anywho....
The card was a GeForce 8600 gts pci. Machine is running vista. I'm shooting for a relatively cheap replacement, say under $100, that still can run coh non-ultra mode respectably. Of course, costing less is better. I'm already planning on dropping 1500 or so on a new gaming machine.
I'm likely giving way too little info here. Let me know what you think and if I need to give some more info. While I've programmed computers for 25+years, hardware has never been my strong suit.
