The total posts of everyone in this thread so far, is still less than mine. I am worried about myself.
PS- welcome to the forums. if it weren't nice, I wouldn't have stayed this long, so hope you find some fun here too. -
I'm not disputing there might be a drop. I'm disputing that it will matter significantly.
When you compare the number of people who PL to farm, or PL for prestige, or PL just to PL, versus those who do it for PvP, I'm not sure the numbers are comparable. Then ask yourself if the People who PL for PvP aren't quite likely to just keep doing it for other reasons, and you quickly come to the conclusion that an easy leveling zone might change the habits of a few people, but in the grand scheme, not so much. -
Quote:Not really. You have options available to shut off Auto Powers only, and set the stacking displays to Numeric.Totally agree with both of you.
ANY improvement in the interface over the "buff-millipede" view we currently get would be a great improvement. Currently it is way too "binary" --> see none or see all of it.
While I fully agree the icons themselves are too small and the OPs idea (or something like it) isn't a bad one, I just wanted to point out that there are things you can do to cut down on the clutter. -
It's your call. If I had access to EU servers I'd be more than happy to help you out. I will say though that we're really good at answering lots of questions here, and responding again if there's things you don't understand. And one other nice thing about a forum thread, is you can save the link and refer back to the info later.
Like I said though, your choice. Welcome to the game, I hope you stay, and have fun.
Edit to add- you may want to scroll down the the European sections of the forums, and post in your Server's board, or the general EU Discussion area. That should be a good way to find someone to connect with ingame on your server. -
Quote:Will it still slice a tomato? And since you don't have to level something and pay to out fit the character, you reduce wasted time for the PvPer, have less power-leveling and farming overall, and I expect that you would see a drop in RMT transactions as well.
C'mon Flea, you have a decent idea here. Even some good reasons for it. No need to promise it will cure cancer when anyone who thinks about it will realize there are enough other reasons these things happen, that 1 new zone won't make a whit of difference to a game wide phenomenon, especially since it's a PvP zone and PvP is not a driving force in this game.
Like I said it's not a bad idea. I say though they could give everyone who goes an alt spec that only works in that zone.
Personally I'd rather see work done on the baseline flaws of PvP, and the specific flaws in the existing zone games first, but the premise for YAPVPZ is, in this case, not bad. -

Quote:Don't get me wrong. I wasn't talking about crashes. Crashes aren't usually mod-able by enhancers of any type, and in most cases, Global bonuses help mitigate them and shorten the downtime.100% in agreement with you on this one. You will be hard-pressed to find a snipe, nuke, unstoppable, or various and sundry sharp objects in my pockets.
I'm talking about gimmicky mechanics that apply to a limited subset of powers (not END cost which is ubiquitous).
Slots are at a premium in every build. That's by design and unlikely to change. However I feel a gimmick that is only mitigated by wasting those slots, is a cost I'm not inclined to pay. -
Quote:Like I mentioned above, I've had a fair discussion with BaB about this. He agrees a system would be nice. He's even been booted from raids on his home server as a player. The idea of instancing the raid has been around since it was introduced. Unfortunately, there is no sort of raid mechanic to support it (selecting a raid leader, tagging characters for entry into a certain instance, etc.). I'm not sure if some CoP mechanic could be applied to it, but it would be cool if it could (one instance with multiple 8-man teams).
However his well explained answer boiled down to the following:
As long as there's only a limited number of "raids" in the game, there's not enough push to spend the time and money on it. This made sense at the time and it's a fair enough reason.
I will say though that that was year's go. It was before NCNorCal and Paragon Studios. It was before the big expansion in staff and budget. I'm not for a moment saying that this explanation and stance is the same now as it was then. In fact my own observations lead me to believe they're heading toward getting it done. More raids now (ship raids, CoP, even the winter event) means more "need". Between that and what they've said about Incarnate content (more raids or zone events), I'm led to believe they've been trying different ways to handle things, and will eventually come up with a solution.
To my mind that's good news.
I don't buy the comment above that there were "thousands" of people in one zone at the same time. The game has never worked like that, even in the biggest player events on Test. Same thing would happen as happens when you hit the cap in RWZ or the Hive or the Abyss. The instance will split. For a holiday event where people are standing around and chatting, the splits dont really matter. However for a raid when said raid is only happening in one instance, that's definitely an issue. -
The only thing you'd lose access to is anything stored in your SG base. You're still in the SG (you can even pay rent!) once you go full villain, you just can't use the base until you get back.
The only other thing you'd lose if you had any Hero Merits when you become Vigilante, or any Villain Merits once you go Rogue. -
It's not just Renault, and it doesn't happen every time. I've run into the same issue on a Sister Psyche with the 3rd mission repeating itself 3 times before we gave up. Did it again a week later and it ran fine.
File your bug report, be as thorough as possible, but until this starts happening more than once in a blue moon, it should be a YMMV warning instead of a DO NOT DO THIS SF kind of warning. -
I will just say that in theory, Push Back may sound ok, but in practice, it sucks. While Interrupt time is a pretty optional stat to enhance in this game, Talents to reduce/eliminate push back are pretty much obligatory in that game. Also to mention that Push Back as a mechanic is pretty much entirely relegated to ranged combatants. It pretty much is doomed to failure if you're trying to come up with an overall solution for this game that applies to both ranged and melee.
There's also the practical effect of different design goals in this game. If there's Push Back, would it work like Fury, and be based on anyone who attacks you? Or would it trigger on any attack that hits you, which instantly makes Defense an overpowering factor. Then in either case there's the overall higher enemy count this game is designed around. That either makes Push Back an extreme penalty or (if the amount lost per swing is reduced) a negligible one. In other words, it gets really hard to scale so that it's not either an overly harsh penalty, or a trivial one.
Besides, I'm not a fan of powers with a built in negative, and being forced to enhance/talent to get rid of that negative. -
Quote:Neither raid requires more than 5 teams to complete or so, and both zones are capped much higher than that. Is it easier with more people? Yes. Are they required? No. Ship Raids go smoothly with as few as 2 teams, and Hami Raids are done with <40 quite often.I concur. Both Hami and Muthaship raids rely heavily on the number of participants, so anyone in the zone who is not participating in a raid {usually by doing something unrelated, but perfectly legitimate} is just by their presence making things more difficult for the raid teams. Increasing RWZ's maximum capacity would help significantly with this problem.
While I've always been in favor of a better system to keep raiders in raids (hopefully it will be coming now that we know more big events are on the way), simply upping the cap on a zone isn't practical.
I remember sitting in the Hive listening to long open discussions with Castle and/or BaB about why the cap got lowered, and why it can't be higher (during closed beta for the current Hami Raid) I've also had talks with BaB via PM about why they didn't then and haven't yet come up with a better solution for Raid Controls.
Is it a bummer to miss a raid? Yeah. It's more of a bummer when the entire zone crashes mid raid and EVERYONE loses out though. That's the kind of thing that is more likely to happen with more people. It's not worth setting things up for failure and really unpleasant raiding experiences by a "simple" fix of raising the zone cap. -
They can't make them skippable, at least not the one's made the way all our's are. Every cutscene are actualy NPCs running a script that triggers when they're spawned (by players getting close enough or triggering an event). Since skipping them would mean people could move around and attack those NPCs, you'd be able to fight them when they can't fight back.

Quote:Funny, the economist in me can't stand slotting and reslotting SOs when they go red every 5 levels.I don't have that problem personally, since I'm an economist. I don't like going through the trouble to slot a bunch of low-level IOs just to throw them in the trash when I want to upgrade them.
What I do instead is use Single-Origin Enhancements all the way up to level 47, at which point I generally respec and frankenslot with level 50 IOs. Those last three levels are epic.
Level 27 or 32 are the magic numbers for me. When I get there I slot in generic IOs or super cheap acquisitions I have laying around that are as good/better than SOs and then I can play happily to 50 just adding more to the new powers and slots I get as needed. -
It sounds like you're playing through as a villain. You covered several of the ones you will want to watch for above, but I will reiterate and add some:
Mayhems- Definitely grab as many different ones as you can on the way up. Those explore badges are hard to come by other ways, and killing 1000PPD is time consuming so you may as well make as big a dent in it as early as you can.
Contacts- Yes you can get Badge missions again later through Ouroboros, but if you're doing Mayhems and getting contacts, you might as well grab any/all that you can along the way. When given a choice between 2-3 contacts, look up which one has a badge mission(s).
Accolades- there's one in particular that's pretty easy to get early on as a villain, and that's Demonic. It's an incredibly handy power to have at your disposal at all stages of leveling. It's worth the extra time.
Strike Forces- If you get bored of the grind of normal contacts and missions, a good way to get some levels quickly and a shiny badge at the same time, is to run a few Strike Forces while you're in level range. Now with new Exemplaring rules, you can even get on SFs below your level and still get good xps.
All this advice applies Blueside as well, except the Demonic Accolade. The Hero Equivalent isn't easy to get until the endgame stages.
Just a few bits of advice off the top of my head, have fun with it and if you have more questions or want me to clarify feel free to ask. -
Way to make something sound worse than it is by being vague. The amounts of prestige needed to pay base rent can be earned in minutes. The salvage costs are moderate. And I don't remember the prestige costs to build it but none of them ever seemed excessive to me after the current round of cost cuts went through.
-
Quote:That's because you're anti-SG and anti-base Sam, trust me, you're not the norm. While that might be a decent argument for people who dabble in bases in general (and I know that's who you were addressing), it perpetuates a running problem with bases - they're very hostile to solo players and introduce all manner of hoops to jump through. Rent, an obtuse editor, inability to invite or promote your own alts, prestige conversion rates, blah blah bladity blah blah.
To explain - I've been here for six years, maybe more, and to this day I HAVE NOT SEEN an empowerment station. Ever. I don't know what one even looks like.
You choose not to use a game system? That's fine. However look at the thread title.
As you said, you've been here years. If you'd chosen to, you could have learned about them easily. You're a smart guy. However you chosing not to use it for reasons of your own doesn't detract a whit from their usefulness. Just puts this on the list of things you're willfully ignorant of.
Edit to add- Bases, base rent, and crafting are nowhere near as onerous for a primarily solo player as you describe. I can earn rent for a month for all three of my small bases in a day's play. Once stuff is crafted, it's done. No need to repeatedly use the editors if you have what you want. For the time invested, my bases have paid back their cost a hundredfold in utility and convenience.
MMOs by design are about jumping through hoops, pretty much every game of any kind is. Whether you choose to or not, you've made it clear that your personal threshold for that is very very low.
Could bases be better? Most assuredly. Do the niggling problems that bug you mean most people ignore them altogether? You really sound like you're trying to argue that no one should make an effort to learn about bases and use them because you've already decided they suck. -
I'm in favor of keeping the sets we have, adding more, and making one other change to even out supply and cut down market hunt and pecking.
Do we really need every recipe at every level? I'd be much happier hunting through recipes set to drop on the 5s (10, 15, 20, etc)
If that's not doable, then try to give us an upgrade to the market interface that lets us view transactions and place a blanket bit on anything within a certain level range. Why should i have to place 3 bids on a 34 35 36 recipe I want when any one of those will do, let me place one bid on all 3 levels and the first one that sells, is mine. -
Quote:Not really, sorry. What you said made it sound like the exact opposite of what it is. Depending on the Stat, there's several different ED caps (Schedules). Schedule A is the most common, covering Acc, Dmg and other common attributes. The closer you get to 100% bonus, the more ED kicks in.I thought that's what I said, just without the fancy chart link and exact numbers. Thanks for clarifying.
What you said made it sound like lower level enhancers had lower caps, and the caps kicked in based on the number slotted in a power. Not at all true. You could slot 6 Damage Training Origins in a power and most of them would be fully effective, for example.
After reading what you wrote 4 times, I see what you were getting at, but the third sentence really garbled your meaning. -
Quote:I'm sure they do, and I'm sure we can expect to see many more of them with Incarnate content. Is it such a bad thing to have a challenging trial? So many "speed" TF's are abused and many (most?) missions are commonly "ghosted" these days.
I like that there's a trial with some time-sensitive tasks and a big challenge to overcome so it's not taken for granted like so many other trial/TF runs. Maybe the devs agree? -
-
Frankly, that's bunk. While characters have a definite progression and reading them in order can help, each story is written to fit within itself very well. If Pratchett really cared what order we read them in, he'd have started numbering them long ago.
-
I personally love the Night Watch books. Start with Guards, Guards! then look up the exact order of the following books from there. Night Watch itself is probably my favorite Pratchett book of them all. It's a really well done time travel story and I love it all the more for staying true to all the characters of Ankh-Morpork, past and present.

I'm simply going to say that I agree with Obsidius' original premise, for a LOT of reasons that haven't been gone into publicly. I hold nothing against our current staff because some huge changes have been happening in the company over the stretch, but there was most assuredly a trend toward more and better communications back during the days of Lighthouse and Ex Libris, and it's reversed itself quite heavily.
Not just in terms of these forums, but overall. I've had good relations with our Community Reps, Devs and GMs the entire time I've been here. However there were some great projects going on and community initiatives that just sort of withered and died because of lack of OCR support. -
Quote:Thankfully you're willing to take advice and learn some lessons, because people are right, this really is an incredibly solo friendly MMO. I will say that you had taken your thought process about two steps too far when you made your first post. Thanks guys, I really appreciate it
I was so frustrated earlier today as I was pumped after getting to 32 last night. All of a sudden I seemed to hit a miserable wall. With your tips, I'm immediately on a better road to success!!
One of the ones that helped me immediately was dropping my level to -1, but simultaneously bumping my villain equivalent from x3 to x4. All of a sudden I'm doing well again! It's challenging (I have to pop inspirations sometimes, but not like 8 of them for one fight), but my solo character is not doing so badly any longer.
Sorry for sounding so upset earlier but I was, for me it (CoH) was something I was having a blast playing for the past month and half now (the grouping characters I made have never had a dull or boring moment). All of a sudden it went from challenging to impossible and I was angry...a game I had loved to play suddenly became frustrating and unfun near instantly, I didn't know what to do.
I've edited my post title to reflect your advice, thanks again guys for not berating me even though my initial post had some nerd rage in it. If I have any other questions, I'll be a bit more calm when I ask next time
Next time you feel like you're running into a wall, come and get some advice first, before you get annoyed and feel like you need to quit. Every character has good days and bad days, and not everything goes smoothly even for the best soloing builds. The foes change remarkably every 5-10 levels, and you have to be ready for that. The next big bump should hit you around 41-42, when groups like Longbow and PPD get their endgame modifications. You get better, and they get better, as long as you're prepared for it, you can still thrive.
