  1. Working brain/cooperative attitude
  2. Mutation doesn't make the target throw up after a short while. You're thinking of Elixir of Life.
  3. The real benefit of making a kin defender is that you get access to Transference at 26 and Fulcrum Shift at 32 (instead of 35 and 38 respectively). The difference in buff/debuff strength is not hugely significant.

One benefit of PPP over APP is that you can get a relatively concept-neutral S/L defense toggle. With Scorpion Shield, Weave, Maneuvers and a few IO set bonuses (hint: Kinetic combats in brawl/boxing), you can softcap S/L defense.

  6. Agreed with Sant (I'd also throw Repel in there if you're going for a high defense build), but despite how subpar DP is, few of the powers in the set are obviously skippable. I skipped Suppressive Fire while levelling up and regretted it since on a set that has no burst damage and few debuffs I had a hard time with enemy mezzers and other single troublesome targets.
  7. The DP nuke is very hard to use without getting killed unless you have passive mitigation or have the spawn debuffed into the floor first. On my /Kin I only started using it after I got softcapped S/L def.
  8. Speaking as a level 50 DP/Kin:

Kin has two main things to offer DP: Fulcrum Shift makes up for the subpar damage of the set and with HoB can kill even-con minions; and you can stack huge amounts of -Dmg. You can essentially neuter an AV singlehandedly with Siphon Power/FS/Chemical rounds. Note that the DoT from incendiary rounds gets boosted by FS.

The drawbacks are that you are taking a primary with long animations and redraw with a very clicky set that plays best in melee. Get good at judging whether you can afford to risk the next few seconds attacking before clicking a long-animating blast.

They are in a situation with a player who isn't using all of their powers to the optimal level. There are still 7 other players on the team.

(Also, I have yet to see a situation where one player failing to use one power has caused a team to fail. Usually, what happens is that one player isn't using a power, the team says something... and then promptly gives up putting in full effort because they see that said player isn't "contributing" as much as others think they should be.)
I'm implying none of these things; stop putting words in my mouth. I said:

    1) One of the purposes of a team is to tackle content that the players in it might not be able to achieve solo. As a collaborative effort, asking for help is not unreasonable; and

    2) Knee-jerk reactions and blanket declarations of "don't tell me how to play" are selfish and uncooperative.

There's nothing wrong with a few clear directions from the team leader, or a teammate asking for a heal when the tank's in the deep red and the team is tackling some of the toughest content in the game. Religious belief in rules like "it's never acceptable to tell another player use X power please" is absurd. How about a more realistic and reasonable approach that acknowledges that while micromanaging teammates is rude, there's nothing wrong with a more knowledgeable player speaking up in good faith or a teammate asking for help?

    Quote:
Again, in my experience this is a problem of perception. By virtue of you noticing that the team is having a problem with X and player 5 has a power that mitigates the impact of X does not mean that it is essential for player 5 to use that power. Perhaps there is another way to get around the issue the team is having with X, but because you see the issue and ONE way to fix, that must happen, or the team will fail. If that really isn't the situation, then yes, the player should be using the power, but I don't think I have found a situation where any one player can decimate a team by not using a single power but still be contributing in other ways.
If people in a team - a collaborative effort by definition - are not willing to help out with simple requests, and make things needlessly difficult for everyone else as a result, that's pretty clearly bad faith behavior. Oh, I'm sure that you can find a way around the uncooperative player regardless. You can also learn not to be a doormat.

I don't ask for buffs. I have a policy of never asking for buffs because I believe it promotes bad play: people soon learn that they can get other players to grovel by playing poorly.

    Unusual slotting

I'm pretty sure missing half the time would annoy most people, concept or no concept.

Sacrificing performance for concept bores me. I'm more interested in the convergence of concept and performance, and building characters that are both conceptually satisfying and mechanically powerful.
  12. I happened to meet such a specimen on Guardian the other day. She was BA/something, had no Taunt, and never turned on a single toggle (though in her defense, the poor thing did say she was pretty new to the game). Forget about tanking, she had trouble just staying alive.

I like playing with players like these because my characters get to be the star of the show. I tanked for the team with my Fire/SD scrapper who does more damage than the rest of the team combined and has a 16-target Taunt called Fireball.
  13. I don't get why you guys think his remark is offensive; I play virtual ebay every day and love it. I play the market because I like pretending to be Warren Buffet, except with Monopoly money instead of real money.

Half the time I'm logged into the game I'm not even playing it, just sitting around and chatting. I play virtual architect by tinkering with my base. I play virtual Barbies by making up costumes. What narrow-minded people conceive as "playing the game" (i.e. going into missions and killing stuff) is really a very minor part of the game.

Come play with me, read my bios and look at my costumes. My global is @Laevateinn and I'm on Virtue server. My various concept builds can solo AVs, solo Pylons, solo Vanguard Sword at +4/x8, farm and ghost missions. None of this second build stuff. The entire functional build/"concept" build idea is based on the false dichotomy that reducing performance magically improves your concept.

Not only does the healing Nictus heal off henchmen, the summoning Nictus also spawns an extra boss for every entity in range. So on a weak team, I could see that being reasonable. What strikes me as odd is why he told you to unsummon all the henchmen when it makes more sense to just unsummon the T1 ones.
  16. My observation is that the Scrapper board is far superior to any of the other AT forums when it comes to build critique.
  17. I would've just shrugged, maybe shared a few laughs over it in a private channel, and moved on. This is a casual-oriented MMO. Expecting a majority of players to have effective builds, a solid grasp of game mechanics and the ability to follow complex orders is unrealistic. Even if it turns out the team can't survive at all without the bubbles, what are you going to do, make her respec on the spot?

I wouldn't bother saying a word unless the person was someone I knew, although sometime I do ask "Is there a reason you're not taking X power?" just in case it's a newbie.
  18. Look, I appreciate your concern but let's just say that if any of you guys (hypothetically) decide to scam someone one day... think your plans through a little more carefully
  19. I'm still looking for the person in question. If you don't have a screenshot, send me a tell anyway; we'll see what can be done.

  21. I play City of Heroes for the impossibly cool clothes. Like this:

Someone going out dressed like that in real life would probably get arrested for indecent exposure, but it's part of the charm for me. I've actually avoided playing a number of games (LotRO and Guild Wars among them) because the player avatars didn't have costumes that are revealing enough. Like this:

It may have something to do with the fact that superhero costumes are, by their very nature, weird and fetishy. Besides, CoH is still one of the few places I can get a decent stockings-with-miniskirt outfit.

But that's not all. Playing on Virtue, there are wacky things happening all the time. There probably aren't a lot of places in the world where you can overhear a conversation like this in public:

It just adds to the charm of the place. Even the annoying people are (usually) annoying in a way that's at least moderately amusing because of how over-the-top they are. Like the whiners who think that marketeering and flipping is 'unethical', or the ones who get their panties in a twist whenever someone points out that their power choices are subpar. Or the tank I had on this STF who was more interested in rapping than tanking.

I wish I was kidding on that last one.

As TonyV said, unless the player is actively doing things counterproductive to the team, I wouldn't legitimize the complaints by telling them how to play. And I must point out here, contrary to Lemur, that NOT doing something is not the same thing as doing something on purpose to mess with the team.
If people are deliberately chosing (not unable to) not to do something and the team is very obviously failing because of it, then asking (not ordering) them to help out is perfectly acceptable. Trying to deflect the blame on to the other players doesn't work because one of the purposes of a team or task force is to tackle content that none of the players in it can accomplish solo. Players who respond to any request made of them with a knee-jerk reaction of "don't you tell me how to play!" are uncooperative and selfish.

This isn't the same thing as begging for SB everywhere because you think you need it, because the icon in your buff bar is blinking or because you look down on minmaxers and have a terribly designed build as a result. This isn't about castigating a player because they didn't take X power or use it in exactly Y way. There is a specific problem and a specific player on the team has the ability to solve it and is refusing to use it. This is not 'telling other people how to play'.

You did the right thing. There are a lot of uncooperative people in this game who answer simple requests for help with attitude. Rather than being a doormat and sacrificing your fun for their benefit, you imposed consequences for her bad behavior. Good job.

Consistently, or only for very brief periods of overlap? That's pretty impressive if you could do it with any consistency.
  25. The most expensive pieces will be the Miracle unique, the Obliteration triple/quad, and the Gaussian's Rech/End.

You're not softcapped with CJ off (I see 44.8/42.9/44.8). Add a Steadfast +3 def in place of one of the resistance commons in True Grit and you are. It's cheap and you can't beat it for slot efficiency. If you're willing to rely on CJ to softcap, this also lets you drop the Obliteration.

I'd also move the 6-slotted Multistrike elsewhere and frankenslot Lightning Rod for maximum recharge, damage and accuracy, because Multistrike has anemic recharge and you want as much of it as possible in this attack to abuse it every chance you get.
