Thanks for responding again! I will take this latest round of advice and fiddle.

Argh! I posted the wrong data chunk. There was literally no change in that chunk. =(
If you would be so kind, this is the right data chunk incorporating a good deal of the feedback.
Sorry for the wild goose chase... please check it out. I checked the import and this is the right one.
Same issue still applies, getting close, much better attacks.

Crap... see below... I accidentally posted the wrong data chunk =(
-
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I feel like such a moron for having vengeance toggled. /facepalm I thought capping was a bit too easy, and was like, shouldn't I need to have to hit DA? So, thanks for that first and foremost.
The reason you see mistakes is pure ignorance. I am going to try to absorb the advice, an repost tightened up build later today when I have a chance. -
Hello.
I put together a Katana/WP build that I think is workable, or close. This is the first scrapper IO'd build I have ever tried to get together, so it may be a hair off or even way off. From just looking at the totals it appears to be "cap-ish"? (/em shoulder shrugging)
I tried to avoid purples, I only have the Rag KB one in there just because. I think I got most of the key uniques in here, but may have missed something in the fracas.
A good deal of the choices were based off of various kat or wp (but not necessarily kat/wp) builds I have seen around the forums, so if you recognize a snippet of your build here or there, it probably came from something you posted!
Please let me know if you have any tweaks or suggestions or I have screwed something up royally.
Thanks for any and all advice!

Thanks for reading and posting the response! I do appreciate it. I like how you demonstrate hitting those key set bonuses and working the uniques in. Overall, I really like your posted build's flow, it captures the spirit of how I imagine my crab pretty well and gets all those nice numbers. It's a bit less range-y with Slice and Frenzy, but mobs frequently don't cooperate with staying at range in reality anyway.
I have some questions, sorry if there are a bunch, I am very curious =)
- What are the implications of taking Detonation over Positron's Blast? I am not well versed in how to compare these apparently similar sets.
- You 5 slotted boxing, is that to actually use it ever, or purely for set stuff?
- You took out CT:O, which I have heard is good for dealing with the very high end enemies who are very hard to hit or who debuff accuracy? Any truth to that?
- Would one more slot in Hasten make any kind of impact to the longer timers like Serum and pets?
- Lastly, I see there is no AIM, how much of a real world DPS loss does this represent? Is it a big deal?
Thanks for any insight!! -
Hello!
It is with a strange mixture of pride and humility I present to you my first crack at any kind of IO based build in MIDS that I made myself from scratch in 7 years of playing COH off and on.
By scratch I mean, while I did look at other builds to get a feel for slotting, and etc, I started this one blank in MIDS and built it up based on my own feelings/thoughts and reading other builds to get a feel.
None of the other builds had the power choices or flow I was interested in to customize my play "just so", so I tried my own to see if I could shoe horn it. I know it's got to have some mistakes in it and I could use your wisdom to see how to get the most from it or make tweaks!
What I tried to do based on my interests:
- Be primarily ranged, but able to survive somewhat in melee range
- Focus on AOE
- Focus on Pets (Uptime and Power)
- Use the uniques that I was aware of
- Get set bonuses
- Try to manage END issues
Where I think I failed or am still ignorant:
- I am only at 35%ish melee and s/l type defenses, and could get in trouble here not being capped.
- I don't know if I missed a key set bonus
- I don't know if I missed a key unique
- I don't know if I over/underslotted a power
- I have no idea how much this cost / is hard to get, but I am willing to use it as a goal
- I did not think of incarnate slotting as I am still unclear how I will be doing that or even how that works, etc.
Any feedback is extremely welcome. While I am very excited to have even thrown something half way sane together, I realize that I more than likely majorly blew some or all of it!!
Thanks!!!!

Thanks for all the great responses.
A couple of follow up points/ thoughts.
Even without changing up powers / respeccing, I was able to do a bit better last night, playing more like a ranged character and kiting slightly, letting my ranged defense which is higher get in the mix, and just plain keeping them off me a bit. I also was more religious about firing venom grenade which I think was making my kill rate faster.
For now, I am looking for something more range-y, so I think I would like the idea of introducing frag grenade is a first step.
I will definitely think about going for sets in a few key powers as soon as possible to get the KB protection and some +recovery treats going here and there.
Also, I had enhanced almost all of my powers for recharge and none for endrdx and so this was making my end use worse (although increasing my dps I guess). Since I now know that end use is a known issue for crabs, I am going to slot up stamina as if its a higher priority. There's only so many slots, and sometimes it's hard to know when to go for it.
I have looked at several posts with specs, but I am having trouble finding one that 100% grabs me and aslso knowing when to balance preference with necessity, I feel like I am closer tho with this advice.
Thanks!
P.S. I almost forgot. I duo'd with a level 50 last night, who just randomly saw me LFT, and asked me to join them on a mission. I have no idea how fancy their IO's or whatever were, or how "good" they were, but I felt like I was seriously contributing to lay the smack down despite being only SO'd and SK'd from 14 levels lower, and I felt this was a little wink from the CoH gods saying that maybe I shouldn't quit on this char before seeing where it goes. -
I have a 35 Thugs/Dark MM and a 35 Crab SoA.
I am trying to decide which to take forward. I think on paper I would like to take the crab but the mm is doing much better on solo mishes with like x4+ and I am wondering if the crab gets better with some key change later or if I am "doing it wrong". Both chars have mostly SO with some damage non set IO.
I am running all the normal toggles and my attack sequence is aim if up, venom grenade, suppression, arm lash, longfang a single then repeat, with maybe a chaingun in there. I will do pets when it's a boss battle. My travel powers are cj/sj and I am auto firing hasten. I do not have tough weave yet in fact I need to respec out of fitness which would free me up for that.
I am basically getting packs of mobs up in my grill beating on me and am having the following issues:
My dps is not taking them out fast enough. I am overall disappointed in my dps. I didn't take frag grenade cause I am afraid of knock back stigma and issues. I didn't take omega bomb because people said it was only for show. Perhaps I need frag grenade.
I am sucking end badly. I worry that even if I have frag grenade in rotation it would just make the end issues worse. I run out of end before mobs die.
Even with toggles and serum I get beat down by whites so I am like wha? Would tough and weave help immediately? I think of them as more for holding sets. If I did take them that's even more end sucking which is already sad for mah crabz.
I get kd like a baby Billy goat. Pow on my butt. I am think of switch to hover for this. If I had some cc I could keep them at range and lower both the beatdown on me and the constant kb which is alps hurting my dps.
Ant tips to help plug these holes would be welcome. On a team I feel like I do ok, but solo the mobs get up on me, kd me and i kill them slower than makes sense. It's so much easier on mm and I feel like crab can do this too if fix my approach.
Thanks!!!! -
Thanks.
I was more interested in any "deal killers" with Archery, and it looks like there are none. I didn't want to invest the time and inf in something that had a know major goof or something.
I am kind of looking for just general content, so you answered that.
With blasters in general, and Arch/MM in particular, does it add value to get your def up even if its not capped, and can you do so w/o hurting your dps? -
I have started up an Archery / MM, and am curious how Archery does when you are 50 and putting some money into it. I am not talking about the greatest build ever, but if you were just doing normal player investment, where Archery falls relative to the other sets.
Thanks. -
I haven't seen a ton of threads about Archery in general, and via Google I found a very small amount of Archery / Dark threads that are mostly builds and not break-downs of the combo.
I kind of like the idea for theme reasons, but when I don't see something talked about much, I start to wonder what's up.
First of all, how does Archery compare to other sets, and does anyone have any experience with Archery / Dark?
Thanks. -
Thanks for all the great responses. It didn't occur to me to keep respeccing to free them up in waves.
Thanks! -
Once slotted can you transfer an IO to another character, for example if you re-roll? Is it "bound" to your character ala WoW?
I know you can transfer things between chars via your chat handle, but am curious if you can somehow get that IO to a re-roll or alt or whatever.
Could you respec, then just keep the IO's in your inventory, then mail them, or is it one and done? -
Quote:That's what lead me to the make the OP. =) I was trying to slot a power and get certain targets and everything wasn't matching my understanding.I agree, so why don't you try specing out a build in Mid's and then post it to the appropriate AT forum? As a rule people are very willing to help with builds, and the AT forum will have the greatest concentration of experts for whatever powersets you're intererested in.
At the time I was checking out a more uncommon powerset combo and couldn't find any newer posts, so I was trying to make my own build and not be that "I want a build that does this that and the other" guy and make other people do everything.
Also, i wanted to finally bite the bullet and get my head around these concepts. In the course of trying to do that, I started to see some things I didn't understand and hence the post. I now feel like I can also read other people's builds in MIDS better which will help me make my own.
Again, thanks for all the great info! -
Thanks again for all the great responses. It's helping to really clear things up.
I think it will also help to get off the sidelines and being willing to make a mistake or two. You can only connect so much from forum reading wit out actually working things in game and getting the experience of learning by doing. -
Thanks for all the informative responses.
It's looks like it's true that I did make some assumptions from just the one set, but my spider sense was tingling enough to post about it and it looks like my assumptions needed some correct'n.
Let's see if I can summarize properly:
Sets vary in how maxed out an aspect of a power can be, so maybe Ghost Widow's Embrace doesn't get you to SO ED Hold, but perhaps Set X gets you to SO level Damage, etc. It varies and you can't assume.
Common IO's can be used to achieve SO like values in just one aspect, but at the expense of set bonusess *and* you become narrowly focused on just that aspect. This would only be done in a very particular cases and would cost you set bonuses. This I assume is not really done often if at all.
Frankenslotting (for example two slots by two sets in four slots) can be used to really hone in on the very special case of really wanting to highlight just two aspects or if you want two by two bonuses, or you dont have the resources to go deep into purchasing a full set. This is also cheaper, I am guessing because you don't go for the more exotic set pieces and can use lower end sets.
The reason you see full sets in medium to high end builds is that once you can afford it, buffing so many aspects and getting so many bonuses is worth it much, much more than becoming some kind of mono maniac about just one aspect of a power being 15% off of some SO based yardstick.
Please let me know if I am still misaligned with the general wisdom.
Thanks.
Edit:
PS. One other questions: What level of IO's do people usually start buying while leveling or working on the funds to go get the 50's. I know you can buy the 25 IO's but the say 35 IO's would get you locked in at a slightly higher %. -
I am still trying to get the hang of working with IO's. I have played on and off and mostly before IO's (believe it or not), and I am sick of being mystified by them and am trying to dig in and get things straightened out.
I noticed in MIDS trying to do an IO set with Ghost Widow's Embrace, that even if you did the whole set of 6, there was no way to reach the 94.93% ED hold duration you get from 3 hold SO's. You end up ED capped at 73.78%; of course, you get all the other stuff, like the set bonuses and recharge, and etc.
My question is a two parter:
1) I guess the other benefits, like the set benefits and having the other things like recharge and range buffed make up for losing 20% to the hold itself?
2) Why is it literally imposable to use set IO's to reach the same level of power as a particular type of SO's? Is it because #1, the other things make up for the loss?
I am confused, because I just sort of assumed that if you used a set, you would be outstripping using SO's in every way, but technically, if you really cared about one thing, like say hold duration in this case, SO's would technically do that one thing better. Is that correct?
I suppose I am missing something, and I am sorry if I am just dense.

Thanks... that is kind of what I was looking for.

I am contemplating making a Rad/Rad Corruptor, and I just stumbled on the damage scaler numbers for corr (75) vs. blaster (1.125), at first I was all "crap", but then I thought that even though thats a big difference, the -def is going to really help bridge that gap to a great degree.
I realize that its not realistic to imagine that it would make a corr and a blaster equal, but does all that defbuffing help close the gap as much as it would appear?
Thanks. -
I played a NRG blaster on release day (this is my second forum account, so I lost about a year of "look-at-my-signup-date" power)
Like a lot of people who stumble onto NRG, I thought the KB was great.... so great, I wanted to slot for MORE!!! until I got on a team, and realized what everyone does, that chasing mobs all over sucks and makes everyone sassy.
I have been avoiding KB for years now, and playing CoH on and off, and mostly melee, and looking for characters that KD, the sort of high-brow brother of KB.
Well, looking at the forums I continue to see people play NRG, so either people solo all the time, or have figured out ways to manage KB when on a team, or something mechanically has changed, etc.
If you play NRG (or any class with KB like standard ammo DP), how do you manage the KB in such a way that you can team and not make everyone nuts?
Thanks,

There aren't a ton of KM posts these days and while I do see some KM/Regen posts on Google, they are older or PVP focused. I am looking for normal PVE stuff.
There was a recent post about Regen and what would go well with it, and KM was listed as complimentary (due to -DMG and knock down), so I thought I would dip my toe in and ask about it.
I was wondering if anyone had experience with KM/Regen in particular. I like the play and concept feel of both sets, and as long as it's at least reasonably effective (decent enough dps, able to approach various caps) I would be up for putting some time and inf into seeing where it goes.
I am going to take a wild stab at starting to put a build together, and just wanted to see if there was any wisdom out there to work with before I started, such as...
Whats a good APP to compliment the sets?
Whats the best attack chain?
From other builds, I assume I will be taking all of Regen, minus Revive, but which KM attacks are skippable?
Thanks for any insight... after I have a few rough concepts, I will hazard putting something together, but I warn you I know just enough to be dangerous with MIDS and may need some help. -
I find myself playing chars that have some kind of end recovery power, and realized that I would like to maybe go a little farther out on the ice and not be tethered to that need.
I know that zillions of chars are played all the time without end taps like elec or things like regen or will power, but it seems kinda scary to me, like I will be sucking wind all the time.
Obviously inherit stamina helps and there is slotting your abilities for end reduction, but is there any trick to living outside the safety net of heavy end regen powers? -
Does Fury show up entirely in the form of a contributor to DMG bonus?
This may sound like a simple question, but I track several combat attributes and DMG is one of them. On the detailed view I see Fury under DMG as a contributor and just wondered if there was another effect or place it showed up.
What is the current DMG cap for Brutes? Does it vary by level or any other factor at all?
Other than just constantly clicking on powers and keeping the action moving, is there any other approach or tips to maintain Fury?
Thanks! -
I am definitely going to muck around with these combo's, including the most recent one to surface Fire/Ice Corruptor.
However, I also am going to maybe take a step back and try to chill out the perfectionism a bit, and maybe not try to be so picky, and spend a bit of time thinking what I really want to do, instead of trying to do it all.
Thanks for responding and continuing to respond to this =)
