you didnt say what your secondary was, but he was a cakewalk for my thugs/traps as a +2 EB. had a serious mindfield going which took off about 1/4 of his health to start t hen made sure to hit poison trap everytime it was up.
he may not be soloable depending on your secondary -
having two pbaoe knockdowns would make superstrength far too powerful especially in the hands of a brute.

Sure but when I say hey what should I do, hearing you shouldn't have a problem isn't helpful.
I get that you guys know about the sets and everthing but dismissing people because they aren't into max/min they way you guys are doesn't help.
It was a simple question. What can wp do to off set extra damage that bosses do, and what I got was how could you have a problem with a boss.
whatever its just a game.

hrm. you registered for the forums in 04.
the 'concept' vs. 'what actually works' was debated long ago. but by now you should have enough of a grasp of the basics of this game to know what you will and wont need. -

fortitude is still the best buff in the game, and you can easily slot it to keep it up on three people at a time.
[/ QUOTE ]
Alas, with Pain Domination we're unlikely to get it.
Just seems to show how dumb the 'healer' mentality is, when Empathy has some of the best buffs.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think I might actually want /thermal instead of Pain for MMs. Shields + Heals + Thaw + Forge = win, no?
I know I can easily keep Forge on at least two or three people when playing my thermal troller. Having the extra to-hit and damage for Forge, with the survivability of shields AND targeted heals might just be overkill for MMs.
[/ QUOTE ]
not really. even with decent resists, most mobs will still one shot your t1 and t2 pets. defense is king for mm's on the pets. resists is king on the mm itself due to bodyguard. -
[ QUOTE ]
so the defense cap for a shield is 45 percent is what you are saying, but in mids the build i have its at 60 percent, are we on the same page ?
[/ QUOTE ]
no matter how much defense you have, no mob will ever go below a 5% chance to hit you. 45% is the soft cap - it puts all mobs even av's at that 5%
the only benefit to going over is to help deal with defense debufs. if you are an sr scrapper or brute this is not needed as just taking the toggles and auto's alone will cap you on that by 50. SD needs two hammi-o's and a double stacked active defense to reach the same levels of defense debuff but it's possible. even more possible on a tanker becausey ou dont need as many defense sets to cap your positional defense - you are nearly capped with just weave and the shield powers - so you can slot the global recharge needed to double stack active defense. (this is not cheap however) -
it's generally easier to build a brute with dm due to dark consumption, but you have no real aoe dmg unless you pick up a patron aoe later on
-
lethal resists really arent a big issue if you take a secondary with some resistance debuffs. the problem with mercs is not just the lethal resists, but the tiny yet fast ticking dots they use (and really long recharges they shouldnt have anymore) PLUS the resists.
thugs is mostly lethal and smashing dmg, and doesnt have a dmg problem at all. this is because it's the one-two combo of having short burst-high dmg per tick dot cones and having them also recharge very fast. i've also found it easier to keep the achille's heal proc up on thugs enforcers than any of the merc pets. probably because the enforcers NEVER STOP shooting. the mercs will pause on occasion -

eh..if brutes are so hot why are there still far more people playing scrappers?
[/ QUOTE ]
Because there are far more people playing blueside than redside maybe?
[/ QUOTE ]
yes, and why is that?
i find redside to be more efficiently laid out especially at the lower levels before a travel power. if the redside at's are superior, why arent people playing them?
again, a lot of people dislike the fury mechanic. you have to have a brute build that doesnt ever have to stop to rest to take full advantage of the mechanic. scrappers can take their time - do missions while watching tv. -

Then you're simply speculating.

I prefer to call it an educated guess.

Just because they haven't released new information doesn't mean that there isn't any.
[/ QUOTE ]
No, but as I said before, it strongly suggests a lack of faith to me.
[ QUOTE ]
It's also entirely possible that nothing on the survey (aside from side switching) is part of the new features. We simply do not know.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm pretty damn sure of some things that aren't, and really that's enough to call it as far as I'm concerned.

if you dislike this game so much, why do you continue to maintain a paid subscription? just so you can post? -

It sounds like a respec will be needed soon, but I just went with my old standard of get stamina as quick as possible, but other then that I had no plan or build in mind. I just noticed as I fight more bosses that their alphas tear into my little wp scrapper.
[/ QUOTE ]
Sounds like you need to actually check to see what powers your secondary actually has before you start defaulting to basic strategies. QR is bigger than Stamina. RttC is retardedly awesome (just like every scrapper level 16 power). People really need to actually learn the power sets.
[/ QUOTE ]
But some people want to just play and figure it out as the go. I'm regretting that I asked.
[/ QUOTE ]
that has never flied in this game.
well it flies, but if you do it and then complain you get little to no sympathy on these boards -
eh..if brutes are so hot why are there still far more people playing scrappers?
lets not forget that many people do not like the fury system. -
[ QUOTE ]
Ok the goal is to make a tank as tough as a granite one way or another either by defense or damage resist without its granite penalties. Now i came close with my wp because of it's regen's rise to the challenge bonus I can survive15 to 20 s/l 54 bosses but i wanted to experiment with another tank maybe a Shield ???? Or Ice. now i have seen some Sd/SS builds and the max i can come close is at 60 percent melee defense not specifically s/l or some others but general Melee defense... but is it possible to softcap it while still make it a dam good killer /
[/ QUOTE ]
60 percent?
you can nearly softcap shield on a tanker just by adding and 3 slotting weave. the cap is 45%
if yo uare worried about defense debuffs, you can get around them with a good amount of global recharge and two hammi-o's in active defense. -

At heart, all of you agree with me. A one time fee would be far better. You may be ridiculing it, there's nothing wrong with the idea. The continuous fee is more ridiculous than the idea to replace it with a one-time fee.
[/ QUOTE ]
this game has had one paid-for expansion in 5 years. and even then it was purely optional.
how many has guild wars had? do the math -
[ QUOTE ]
Oh, and look: GuildWars doesn't have a monthly fee either!
And that one's published by NCSoft as well!
[/ QUOTE ]
guild wars wasnt an mmorpg. that's like saying planetside was everquest with guns.
now that the overseas parent company of this game is exerting more influence you're lucky it hasnt changed to f2p item mall status.
and quite frankly the level of maturity of the average FREE GAME Player is quite low. the game is better off with a subscription model -
wow. and here i ws going to skip shadow maul in my newest brute build.
-
[ QUOTE ]
I took a look and I do have it, but I did go for Stamina first, so it isn't slotted up yet.
But it sounds like the only thing that can help wp with the alpha strikes and such is to use purples
[/ QUOTE ]
you didnt need to get stamina first. at 20 you get a power far superior to stamina. stamina can be pushed off.
by level 30 you should have all of the powers in your secondary. this is because as you hit the 30+ game missions and enemy factions get tougher and you'll need the protection of heightened senses and that resistance one. if your primary has a skippable 32, i then recommend going boxing/tough/weave for 32/35/38. having all of that and a 4 or 5 power attack chain by 41 will make the 40's less of a pain.
i never had to think about a boss fight on any scrapper post so's, but i tend to not build t hem on the fly either or worry too much about 'concepts'. -

I believe Posi has also said something to the effect of (paraphrased): "the engine is actully quite powerful, and we haven't fully utilized it yet." So there's still room for the game to grow. (That may have been in terms of graphics, come to think of it. Hmm...)
[/ QUOTE ]
That was in reference to graphics, and I agree with it. What's largely limiting CoH from looking better than it does now isn't the engine. The engine, optimizations aside, is robust enough for the game to look better than it does.
What's hamstringing them are the art assets. Having to redo all of them to take advantage of new tech dropped in/unlocked from the existing engine is just as, if not more time itensive than redoing them all for a new game.
In fact, it's worse because keeping it in this game, they have to make sure any new assets match up with old ones. You can't have the new stuff look too good. You can see the difference in something as simple as the old hair styles vs the ones that came in i11.
Again, their hands are tied by the garbage of the past 5 years instead of having the freedom to design something truly awesome.
But that's graphics. The AT/Power system being stuck the way it is has little to do with tech and everything to do with legacy issues. They can't even re-order powers without a huge fuss.
We can't run on/climb walls not because the engine couldn't do it, but because they'd have to go into every building/surface model and tag it as being able to be traversed. It's more easy to do that as part of the creation pipeline than redressing everything after the fact.
Power customization is a big deal because the system wasn't designed to support it. If the could start fresh, it wouldn't be a big deal at all.
[ QUOTE ]
On the subject of Going Rogue, I think it's far too early to judge it as a failure. I'd wait until we have a more comprehensive list of features before passing judgement.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm judging it based on the information they've released and on the survey that spawned the expansion. I'm also judging it on the fact they didn't release any new information or material since, or at E3, which betrays a lack of faith to me.
[ QUOTE ]
discarding those people in lieu of a sequel would be a mistake.
[/ QUOTE ]
Discarding other people because you wont do what it takes to grow your game and keep it competitive with newer games for those people's attention is also a mistake in my opinion.

if you want a mostly player run game, go play eve. let us know how that works out.
i've been playing these games since they were called MUD's for almost two decades. to date any game that has tried to 'break the mold' has failed. the only truely classless game that has succeeded has been eve online - and it doesnt succeed because of a lack of classes.
unless the game in question is free to play korean trash balanced around the idea you have to spend real money at an item shop to advance your characters there IS a pretty simple formula these companies must adhere to in order to be profitable. because if they are not profitable, the game doesnt survive. i dont think you'll ever grasp that concept.
there will never be a true comic book hero clone mmorpg unless marvel or dc make it. why? they've already proven they will sue the pants off companies who make available to users power and power combinations that too closely resemble their trademarked characters. and also some just wouldnt conceivably work. lets face it - if you could make a mr. sinister clone and it was done just like the comic books it would be stupidly overpowered. the game would be trivial. interest in trivial games is fleeting. the game wouldnt survive.
the at system exists to encourage grouping and to ensure some semblance of balance when it comes to doing the relatively small amount of group-only content in this game. this is MMORPG 101. i think mmorpg's arent for you. you should go back to or start playing console games.
yes - in order to add something like wall climbing they'd have to redo a lot. the technology didnt exist 5 years ago. but they also have to consider the masses - WoW's ui is pretty primitive and their graphics pretty low-tech compared to this game and it's chief rival LOTRO. but that has the added effect of making the game more accessible to people who cant or wont spend thousands of dollars on pc gaming gear. a total graphical overhaul was easy to do in Eve because so few models actually have textures in that game. it's not the case in most mmorpg's. redoing grandville would prob take a metric butt-ton of man hours due to how texture intensive that one zone is. -
stone melee is an end pig. it's very difficiult to make it work without being willpower secondary when teamed or during long fights.

+10% resist and 5% defense for my zombies.....sweet. Considering they aren't the toughest pets around anyway.
[/ QUOTE ]
this gives them a total of 20% resist an 10% defense to all if you slot the recharge and the regular pet uniques.
zombie/ff is starting to look pretty hot
edit: with this change, you can nearly soft cap all of your pets as necro/ff with manuevers. 43.86% that's rather powerful considering all the control the lich adds to this. -

What about a pistol and sword wielding martial artist?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadpool
Or a brawler with sonic powers?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Canary
Or an armored hero with energy blasts?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man
Or this guy?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Jordan
Or the thousands of other very popular character concepts that aren't able to be realized in CoX's system, but can be realized in a more open system like CO's (assuming they add a sonics power set at some point).
Defend CoX's AT and power system as being the best they could come up with at the time if you like, but that doesn't change the fact the current devs haven't done much to improve it, remove the flaws in it or open it up for concepts like these and others.
Much could be done in this game to improve the situation, but the devs aren't doing it. Even more could be done if they could start fresh with CoH 2. They aren't doing that either. What they are doing, is pushing fluff and now an expansion pack that doesn't do anything about the outdated and limiting systems that are the real things that date CoX, hold it back and can make newer titles more attractive than they really should be.
.
[/ QUOTE ]
because the minute you could, the company owning the game you did that in would be sued to the ground unless it was DC or Marvel
are you....are you saying black canary is a 'tank'?
you joined this game well after the lawsuits were finally settled. there was the very real possibility of claws, regen, super strength and invulnerability being yanked from the live game due to lawsuits from DC and Marvel -
personally i enjoy my mg/gloom/smite/sl rotation. doesnt require as much recharge as having only mg/smite/sl and building a rotation on a scrapper.
however the better io's are far more expensive red side than blue. it's a give and take.
as for redside story content - bah. most of it is pretty darn good. it's also substantially harder. we have the hardest av fights -

I make 50 million a day easily. 10 mil really is nothing. If you aren't making that much you are honestly not trying to make inf at all. That's okay of course, as there is a lot more to this game than influence, such as RP, leveling alts, hanging with friends or PvP. But if you're trying to make money and aren't making over 15 mil a day you're pretty much doing it wrong.

I gathered that a long time ago. I just haven't figured out how to 'do ir right' yet.
Esecially on Red Side, where I don't have a 45+ character to aid in that issue...
