Hail and Farewell and Thank You, Fansy, for what you've done and in advance for what you may do in the future on behalf of our collective hopes. Best to you and yours and especially your grandfather of whom we've heard so much of late.

((Were I inclined to be vindictive, I'd imply your grandfather was one of the senior executives at NCSoft responsible for the decision and implementation of sunsetting City of Heroes, but happily I'm not; nor can I believe that worthy gentleman (your grandfather) being of Good alignment and Heroic character would countenance such patently Neutral-Lawful practices as commercial businesses are wont to engage in.))

  2. Thank you, Prince_Recluse. Loved what you wrote and was blown away at seeing your collection. Thank you!
  3. Thanks for the info and the link! Star Trek Online is a game I've been considering playing after NCSoft shuts the doors on City of Heroes. I'll factor this is after I wake up late 12/1 (having stayed up for the "sunset" and final disconnection notice from NCSoft the night before) when considering which MMORPGs (if any) to try next.

I want to say thank you for any/all efforts to those that are trying. And thank you even to those who reject, why? Because you reject due to emotion for this game, and deep down don't want to see it go, but out of frustration you're doubtful at this point. Well most of you, anyhow.

I enjoy this thread. Because it kinda epitomises the community. It's always been an outstanding community, and at some points fervently disagrees with eachother, but only out of love for the game and wanted it to succeed..
That was a really nice posting! Reading it cheered me. Thank you!

I don't think simple disagreement constitutes being a troll. I think you'd agree that some have gone way beyond "I disagree with you/your point because... " to personal attacks and name-calling. (If what you're saying is "fanboys" (read as "immature people") feel that those who disagree with them are inherently trolls merely for having a different opinion, well, what does one expect from Immaturity? This doesn't negate your point, however.)

Yeah, Fansy is being cruel if perpetrating a hoax, or giving hope and renewed encouragement along with information if legit. We've each assessed and made up our own minds about Fansy.

Signing off as a 50-something year old Fanboy aka John (ha, ha, only 1/2 kidding, since the term "fan" still resonates for me as something positive, and if I'm labeled as "immature" I can live with that. As the adage goes, there's no fool but an old fool, and having mastered foolishness, I'm now working on old!)

I'm tired of being called out for being different.

I want to show the world how different I can be.

I want to be super. I want to do things, to be a hero, to show the world that I am special and I am not like everyone else. I want to be someone, do something, be so strong that every other person will finally want to be like me.

I guess I'm just tired of being on the bottom, especially when my mind is so far ahead.

    -----------------------

Also, yes. I have tried professional help. Ironically, it doesn't actually help. I've never told anyone any of this before, to be honest. I need people to vent to, and keeping all of this to myself for so long made me a bit desperate.

No, I am not in danger of hurting myself or others.

Thanks for reading, guys. I guess this community is the closest thing I have to people who will listen - really, truly listen - and it feels great to get this off my chest.

Thank you all for these three years of actual happiness. I don't get to experience it often, and I am so damn proud to be a part of all of this.
    Dear GreatRock,
Wanting to be esteemed, respected and loved for one's own self isn't odd, weird or different. It's downright normal. Depending on where you're at in life (someone said you're 16) often has a lot to do with how one feels and thinks even apart from life circumstances. Psychiatry is useful only if one has a chemical imbalance that medicine can correct or mitigate; however, you might benefit from talking with one or more counselors, therapists, or psychologists. Yeah, it can take some time and research finding one you can work with well, but ultimately worth the effort and expense if said professional can listen fully to you and offer constuctive suggestions as well as understanding.

Going out on limb to offer you my layman's nonprofessional opinion (aka playing "armchair psychologist"), parents who call their child "worthless" and "useless" don't sound very loving and nurturing to me. There are such things as emotional neglect and abuse -- no broken bones, no bruises, but the injury is just as real -- and a good counseling psychologist (or related therapist) can assist in the recovery towards building a happier, more fulfillng life for oneself.

As to wanting to be a hero and show the world, that you can accomplish readily even in small ways. Commit to making a positive difference in the world around you. Volunteer activities can give one a feeling of accomplishment while making a positive difference in the lives of others. (Your school, local food bank, local charities, etc. might well be able to use your services! And/or you might find a sense of belonging and enjoyment in a club devoted to your interests and hobbies.) Also, simply listening to others and being considerate can be a gift.

My last good (imo) idea off the top of my head would be to look for the Self Help books in the libraries. I read tons of these in my early to mid 20s when like you I also wanted to overcome the negative things in my life. I didn't take any single book as having all the answers, but instead found various good ideas that I could apply from many sources, and that included friends, some with more life experience than my own.

Best Regards and Best to you in the future. Take care,

    John
  10. There's this post today at Titan from Mercedes Lackey (Victoria Victrix), no doubt crossposted here to the official forums a few times already: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.....html#msg76158

If said sources are correct, then at least part of the WHY is explained and efforts to Save COH can bear fruit only after the "sunset" 11/30 midnight Pacific time (or 12/1 3 a.m. EST). The more who remain committed to taking reasonable customer/player/fan action(s) after City of Heroes officially ends, the better our chances for a revival and I hope a full and complete resurrection.
  11. Thank you, Alpha Wolf! (Justice misses you btw) And thanks to those writing on this topic. Please keep posting here as relevant. I might just wanna try a Nature Affinity or Titan Weapons toon these next couple of weeks.

Hi E_L, Usually apartment complexes aren't demolished while people are still living in them, when the buildings are in reasonable repair, don't violate health codes or zoning statutes and produce revenues. (We were a stable, loyal customer base, not huge but not miniscule either, and produced revenues of around $10 million annually.) Sometimes buildings are preserved based on some noted historical significance. In any event, the analogy of buildings to MMORPGs is merely an analogy, and limited at best.

    Fansy Returns!

Mercedes Lackey has this to say today on Titan: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.....html#msg76158

    [Quoting from the link, above]
I, too, cannot reveal my source, but it is solid, and I hope you will accept my credibility at this point. Let's just say I had an interesting afternoon gathering information.

Fansy's source is correct. The reason that the game "must" be shut down before it can be sold is because of perceived legal problems and liabilities on the part of the NCSoft legal department. (It's not lawsuits or potential lawsuits with Marvel, but other issues regarding ownership). Apparently dealing with the Garriott case scared the whey out of them, and they are now jumping at imagined shadows. They won't even consider selling until it is officially "dead."

The bad news: the game will close Nov 30.
The good news: it can rise from the ashes.

  14. I get the same GM support the few times I've needed to petition since the sunset notice. The GMs are still around; I presume someone is minding the store. At minimum, NCSoft billing and/or technical support can be phoned and presumably direct one to the correct person or department. Here's hoping.

In your example, you got a new car. We can't easily go get a New CoH? So we are losing something that will never come back.
    That's it exactly!!
  17. I've enjoyed games for as long as I can remember. I learned chess when I was 6 and bridge at 14. 14 was my age when my then best friend in high school introduced me to Empire of the Petal Throne, D&D, miniatures, SPI and Avalon Hill board games and the gaming club at the local college (who happily put up with us high school kids.) During my high school years (mid 1970s) my friends and I gamed and hung out at the hobby store (they ran tournaments for us) and as the network of gaming friends increased, I found myself involved in the Society for Creative Anachronism and local science fiction fandom. I gamed from my teens to late 30s (with a few years off). Circumstances were such that I went from tabletop gaming into LARP (live action role playing.) I'd still enjoy tabletop pen&paper&dice gaming if my friends were still into it, and I'd still enjoy LARP if my health were better. (I became disabled about 7 years ago.) One of my gaming friends, a registered nurse, suggest I try online gaming since LARP was no longer possible and tabletop gaming fun mostly not happening. Another friend, an old gaming buddy invited me to his place to check out City of Heroes. It was love at first sight! We had a blast designing my first character's costumer (still on his account) while he explained the basics of the game to me. Shortly thereafter I had my own account and created characters and a sgbase based on old characters we'd played long ago (hence why I'm @kristoff von gelmini.) I'd solo all I could during the day (being disabled I have a LOT of time. The quality of that time however... ); when he got home from work he'd log in and we'd adventure! After he went to bed, often I'd stay up and get in on PUG AE missions or just go back to soloing before bed.

I found online gaming and CoH to be able to entertain me and hold my attention as well or better than good movie. Meaning, good/effective distraction from chronic pain. On really bad health days, when even solo play is difficult for me, I could amuse myself by designing SG bases and/or costumes and/or start yet another character, since the low level content was fun and not as demanding of speed and reflexes as higher level content.

I met really nice players in CoH almost since day one. Having played so many fantasy characters in tabletop and LARP, it was refreshing to play superheroes, a genre I enjoyed, but the folks I gamed with, we rarely did Champions. I'd avidly read comicbooks as a kid, especially Marvel and DC, so had great nostalgia realized when developing my own superheroes that might in some theoretical universe stand beside Superman and Green Lantern, Doctor Strange and the Valkyre, etc.

After about six months in CoH, I started playing more actively on different servers, to see if there were differences. There were! I went from playing mostly on Infinity to Virtue then Justice then Victory, joining the SG's my CoH friends were in, with a ton of alts still scattered across most of the NA servers. I'd play whichever server and character I wanted but usually elected (when physically able) to team up for SG events, whether it was a high level TF or for us all to create new themed toons etc.

I play CoH because it's fun and I like it. Because there are (or were) lots of good/fun/helpful players. Because the artwork appealed to me. Because like other forms of gaming it's a creative outlet, and LOL yeah, at times "beating up pixels" seemed like exactly the right thing to do.

Hoping COH is saved, and always Stay SUPER!!
  18. FPARN!! (Just to say it once.)

Again, Hearty Congratulations on your natal anniversary (Birthday!) Hope you had an excellent celebration!!
  19. Hmmm, interesting, and sorry you had that happen. I haven't spent any points in the Paragon Market since before the Sunset notice. Like you, I have the RocketBoard and love it!! I'd always planned to get the Flying Carpet as well for my magic origin characters but it was lower on my Wish List than other things. I suggest you file a Petition requesting game support or perhaps there's a better contact for Paragon Market billing/support staff--I wasn't able to find one quickly via Google, but maybe that's just me. ;-)

But whether the Lackey chick gets more book sales or not, I don't care. I'm also a writer. I understand why she would be doing what she's doing, if that's what she's doing. It's devious, but it's understandable. Whether that's why she's doing it or not, I dunno. But it would make total sense. I mean.. "star power" is someone like Bruce Willis or Barack Obama playing CoH in their free time. Mercedes Lackey, not so much. I suspect she'll benefit more from her actions than SaveCoH will.
Now that you mention it, Angry_Citizen, you have seemed like a bit of an *** on these forums. (So have lots of other people, likely including myself.) We're each dealing with disappointment and anger over CoH ending. I'm inferring you're saving people from what you regard as false hopes and additional disappointment. (Shades of "Please stop trying to save me from myself".) I wish you didn't feel it to be necessary to crush hopes and dreams, but apparently you do. Plan Z *IS* happening. To say that it's not is erroneous. To say that Plan Z hasn't released a playable fan-created MMO yet is accurate. To predict that Plan Z will fail is opinion. End o' that story.

As to the "Lackey chick", I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Lackey and her husband Larry Dixon at a Fantasy convention (where she was Guest of Honor) approximately a decade ago (and a few cons after that as well.) It seems pretty clear that Ms. Lackey is a fan and player of CoH as much as the rest of us, and like many is offering what she can to help CoH continue. Since you are also a writer, who has presumably met with as much success or more in that field than she, you'll have great insight into how well connected Ms. Lackey might be with science fiction & fantasy fans as well as gaming fans, as well as other professional colleagues. You also know how wide ranging these overlapping circles can be, and friends of friends are sometimes just the ticket. The idea that Mercedes Lackey would involve herself in efforts to Save CoH merely to increase book sales is frankly silly (read: ludicrous) and insulting. Celebrity, like wealth, is relative. Oh, wait, I'm sorry; you already know everything! This is my perception of reality. No doubt your next post will reflect your perception of reality. Here's hoping we can each bring something more constructive and understanding to situations like this.
