“One of the most valuable lessons I learned from college was in the psych classes learning how different people's blinders and prejudices influence every single aspect of not only how they think, but also how they process incoming data. Everything is filtered, and it is distorted long before it ever gets to the logic centers.”
George Lakoff’s book “Don't think of an elephant” is an easy and accessible introduction to the area of cognitive science as it applies to “conceptual frames.” I highly recommend it. I think he would say it’s misleading to refer to the brains “logic centers” as if they were independent from the data-processing that comes before. The data-processing itself is in integral part of the decision making process, and as we know subject to all kinds of assumptions and prejudices.

Mind you, Lakoff is a political liberal and he’s writing the book from the perspective of “We have let the conservatives form the public debates on most issues of the day.” I don’t have a problem with this, but some people might find themselves not liking his examples of they go against your political ideas. He argues that if you enter a debate in which the other side has already “framed” the issue you are in for a rough time. You will have a hard time articulating your position because they concepts commonly used to discuss the topic will already reflect the opinions and attitudes of your opponent. You will end up implicitly supporting your opponent simply by using their language, metaphors, and ideas.

Let’s take an example of conceptual framing from this thread:

    Quote:
“If I'm going to take the time to price and buy the salvage, run to the nearest crafting table (or use the crafting Accolade power, which is more convenient but also requires a significant time investment to acquire), craft the IO, and come back to the market to list, then don't I deserve something for my extra time and effort -- time and effort that buyers are apparently happy to pay to avoid?”
I completely understand this point and agree. I also think this way of framing the issue contributes to people continuing to believe that are victims. If I argue “I deserve something because of the time I spent” then I am implicitly agreeing with the model that “time spent should correspond to money gained.”

The potential counter-argument is “I work hard at this game and I can’t afford to buy any of the pretty enhancements you guys are able to afford. Don’t I deserve to enjoy this game too? Why should I spend a month saving up 10 million to pay the terrible markup you think you deserve for 5 minutes of crafting? It took me a MONTH and it took you FIVE MINUTES!”

Markets don’t know or care how long it took you to make your money, or how much you have. That information is completely and deliberately stripped out of the CoH interface, as it is in most modern markets. It continues to reside, however, in the brains of the people people who find themselves unable to purchase what they want.

I have tried several times to take someone who was complaining about the market and reframe it for them. “Yes, there are a thousand people with more money than you have. Those people want to give you their money. They want you to take the time to buy the recipe and salvage and make the enhancement for them. They will pay you millions if you can save them a few minutes of effort. Those people with more money are not a problem for you—they are an opportunity!”

One person, amusingly enough, claimed he did not want to do that because “he would just be contributing to the problem.” He really did not seem to get that to somebody who had 2 billion INF on their character, that 10 million actually is worth saving 5 minutes. I appreciate his desire to be fair, but from my perspective he was mainly choosing to remain poor. I think his underlying feeling was that making a profit is somehow, well, dirty.

Personal conclusion? People will be happier if they spend less time focusing on what they think they deserve and more on what they can accomplish.

You are most welcome. Each person who knows this will contribute to the price coming down slightly, but I see that as a positive thing for the game, long-term.

Now just wait until you start wanting PvP and Purples and you need BILLIONS. I guess I'll be spending a lot of time farming 50s, or sitting in Wentworths.

I appreciate your answers in advance.
Honestly, 50 million doesn't get you very much, as I am sure you know. The recent addition of tip missions and alignment merits is the only way I've been able to outfit my current brute. You can do 5 tip missions a day, which equals two A-merits in 4 days. I bought several level 25 LotG +global recharge enhancements this way for two merits and was able to sell them for 120-150 million. That pays for a full set of enhancements that raise your def by a few percentage points. When you have 2 merits check the prices on Numina and Miracle +Recovery enhancements, they also sell for over 100 million. Obtain and sell whatever enhancement has the best price.

Hmm, that's an interesting observation. I am planning on getting my brute to the soft-cap on positional defense, although he isn't there yet. BEFORE he gets to the cap, then the -ToHit is very valuable since it eliminates a large percentage of the damage he would take. But AFTER the cap the value plummets since it is redundant, assuming he isn't debuffed. After he hits 50 I might want more straight AoE damage in which case Fireball is probably the preferred route.

I'll have to check some of the comparative damage numbers. I'll also have to see how much more effort and money it's going to take to reach the soft-cap. I notice that a lot of the people on these boards all seem to have soft-capped characters and treat it as perfectly normal, but it's taking me quite a lot of time and money to get that much defense into a character. I just hit 40% def on melee, and getting that last 5% is not going to be easy but it will decrease damage by 50%. Ranged and AoE are still well below that.
  5. I have the same issue with my level 41 hero SS/SD brute. I wasn't really planning on doing multiple alignment changes to take him over to the villain's side and then bring him back just to get a PPP. I would love to get another AOE attach that did some damage. Would people really advise that over the hero epic powers? I suppose that might be an interesting quest to go on, pretending to be a villain in order to learn their secrets, and then have to redeem yourself.
  6. I have only one thing to add to this thread which has not been expressed yet.

I have no trouble making money, and I am perfectly willing to do what's necessary to outfit my toons. However, I find the whole crafting and market experience takes me far away from the feeling that I am any kind of superhero. It's like pretending to be batman by sitting at a fleamarket selling used blankets. I wish that the game was able to connect the best ways of making money with the main theme, that we are super-powered beings running around doing cool stuff.

I expect that's why the dev's decided to remove the MA and the difficulty settings from the first 20 levels of Going Rogue. At first I was annoyed, but then I really enjoyed playing the game without constantly thinking about maximizing my time-to-experience ratio.

    SS/SD or SS/FA

SS/FA is extremely popular for farming because of the great AOE damage. I prefer SS/SD since it farms very well, but is a bit better for actually playing the game.
  8. I love the alignment merits. It's now possible for me to actually buy things like the Numena and Miracle +recovery enhancements without spending hours grinding to get reward merits. The alignment missions feel a lot more like actually playing the game rather than manipulating a piece of software to achieve a desired result. I've never accumulated much cash or r-merits since I've never really pursued them seriously.

But now that I've gotten a few of the best enhancements for my primary char, I am interested in making some cash. What do people think are some of the most valuable enhancements to invest in for just 1 or 2 merits? Obviously I am familiar with the Numena and Miracle and those seem to go for a good price. Anything else that's popular? Of course with supply-and-demand this will vary, but what are the top sellers right now?
  9. I found that it paid off to take advantage of how other people abandon new characters. I stood in Galaxy and paid new heroes 1 million to join my SG. I told them to please stay "for a few days, leave when you want." A few have left, while most have remained but haven't logged in for weeks. Since the first 15 characters get you 20k prestige each that's 300K prestige without farming a single map. A few people even created new characters right then and there just to get the million influence.

Then I waited until somebody else was advertising their great SG, I complimented them on their success, and I asked for a coalition. They said yes, and now I have access to a full set of teleporters while my base is under construction.

About the only down side is that there's a slight possibility that one of these people are going to log in and I'll find them inside of "my" base, but it was worth 300K prestige to me.

    Fire/Kin/Stone

I just entered the OP into MIDs and it doesn't come up with 46.2 defense, but instead just 36.2 defense on the "Totals" tab. Am I missing something or is the original build 10% under the cap instead of 1% over?
  11. Generally this looks like a solid build. I notice that you apparently have an unlimited amount of influence to spend and frankly almost any build with those enhancements is going to rock. You don't list the cumulative bonuses which also makes it a harder to make meaningful comments.

About the only feedback I can give is:

    1) Why do you have 5 enhancements of Performance Shifter in Stamina ? The last two bonuses are a slight damage increase and and increase in AoE defense of 3.13%. With Fulcrum Shift this build is already at the damage cap most of the time.

    2) Speaking of FS, I would give it some additional slots of +recharge, unless the various bonuses with all the sets makes that unneeded.

    3) Ditto for Hasten, my fire/kin/stone has three slots of +recharge, I always have stacked Siphon Speeds, but it still isn't perma for me.
  12. Thanks for the guide. You might consider a graphic as a way of making the "branches" easier to understand.
  13. So this thread has gone with no posts for a month, and IE 15 added tags within the game. Perhaps it is time to unsticky this thread?
  14. I included a /kin ally in one of my MA missions, mainly so solo players could get Speed Boost. The latest patch seems to have stopped the ally from using Speed Boost at all. In fact, most of the /kin powers seem to get unused, the critter relies completely on his attack powers even though they are set to fight defensively.

Are others noticing this? Any suggested workarounds? I was hoping to create a series of mission which didn’t result in people begging for a fire/kin to join the team.
  15. A truly great and comprehensive guide! I love that you included good foes to confuse. Excellent point that /rad effectively "buffs" the veterans and temp powers by debuffing your opponents.

    [ QUOTE ]
The only reason to increase the Confuse Duration is if you want the set bonuses from something like Malaise's Illusion or Coercive Persuasion.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Or if you want to stack it up on AVs or GMs who require multiple applications.

Speaking of AVs, it's worth noting that although it's fun to solo an AV, the actual time it takes results in a fairly poor xp/time ratio. Don't expect to go into the MA and zip through a mission with multiple AVs on your own. You'll get xp more quickly just by doing radio missions.

  16. Okay, obviously the pre-i15 guides are not nearly as useful as they were. I’ve read the patch notes and followed many recent threads, but I am still unsure how I15 affects the solo dom. There are a lot of threads saying “Wow my (whatever) / (whatever) dom has really improved,” but it’s difficult to get a sense of how they compare.

Are there any opinions as to most effective solo builds for PvE? Or should I just stay with my ice/ice blaster, who has great damage and pretty good damage mitigation through holds and slow effects? I really like being a “blastroller,” but dominator seems to be the AT which most closely fits this playstyle and I’ve never played one before. I’m not particularly drawn to any concept build, I don’t really care if I am using plant, fire, or gravity powers.

If there are any posts or recent guides on this subject that I’m missing please let me know. Even paragonwiki basically says all the information on doms is out of date.
  17. Jim_G

    Ice solo dom

I am wondering the same thing, but that's a 98% different topic than the subject of this thread. You probably want to start a new thread with a subject like "What's the best solo dom for I15?" or something like it.
  18. I know that I was able to add pets to a custom group a few weeks ago, but one of the patches changed things to these pets stopped giving any xp. At that point they were more trouble than it was worth and I removed them altogether. Kind of a shame since some of the bot MM pets are pretty cool looking.
  19. Ipso_Facto, thanks so much for doing this. Although there are some other comparison guides they are all rather old and dusty. You write clearly, and it is a pleasure to read something which summarizes so much information.

I look forward to your upcoming guide on the secondaries!

  21. My widow has recently been thinking that Lord R. sure demands a lot of personal loyalty without giving much in return. A visit to Paragon is probably all it would take to make the Islands seem like a dirty, oppressive place.
  22. If you are going to deliberately make people fail you had better make it crystal clear in several places that this is not a problem and they should just continue to the next mission. You will still probably receive a few complaints and low ratings.
  23. Once you hit level 25+ then it's well worth it to buy IO enhancements or to create them yourself. There's no advantage to waiting until 50 that I can think of.
  24. If you are trying to use the MA to level quickly I would find some missions that have defensively-oriented allies. You can get substantial healing and buffs from them. They leach a little experience, but it's almost like having a team even though you are solo.
  25. [ QUOTE ]
This is probably the biggest tragedy to the buffs of custom mobs--they wound up so strong that players are getting turned away. I really hope that I15 successfully gives better tools for making unique mobs that aren't overpowered.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I agree that it would be great to have greater control over specific powers in I15. But I think the problem is more with the authors, not the MA. I suspect that even if the MA gave complete granularity on individual powers, many authors don't have enough knowledge of the game or the testing tools necessary to make intelligent decisions on what to leave out.

You can see this pattern in many of the decisions people are already making with the editor. If you are facing "4 orange Lutes" in the first spawn then the author has deliberately created a custom group with no minions. There's a good reason why you don't see that in standard missions--it's too hard to solo for many builds. If authors don't take that into account now, then new tools in the MA aren't going to change things much.

My conversations in-game also lead me to think this way. I have gotten into several strange discussions with people about the difficulty of their missions. One author said "Why did you play it solo? Everyone I know always play on a team with their supergroup!" Another person said "You got mezzed a lot? Well, why would anyone play a character without mezz protection?"

I have ended up making most of my missions pretty simple and marking them as "solo-friendly" in the description. I figure if somebody complains they are too easy that person either doesn't bother to read, or just wants to brag how uber they are. But so far I haven't received a negative comment.

The problem is not helped by how limited the playtest feature is in the MA. If it were my software, I would let people playtest the mission with several "standard" builds and powersets at any level they chose. But even then people would have to bother to use it, and I don't know how many would.
