Thanks for putting this together, Goat, it's been a good read.
On the subject of tip missions - I agree that they're pretty good content. I've been known to take a toon or two full circle, and that's fun...seeing the different sides of the same tips as you choose the four different alignment options is pretty cool. My only real complaint is that there's not enough variety at the high levels. For anyone 40+, they're all the same missions over and over. Especially bad if you're maintaining alignment and re-running hero/villain regularly. -
Dug - this is an awesome list, thanks for putting it together!

I've been running a Ninja/FF and enjoying it greatly, but I'm still somewhat confused about Smoke Flash. I haven't figured out the best way to use it. I don't always see a crit after using it, and I'm unsure how to tell if it's actually working. What's the best way to use this power?
-
Some of everything, depending on the toon. On pretty much every toon I'll craft the first Envenomed Dagger recipe that drops during normal play, just in case I find myself in a situation where a team doesn't have much -regen. I also try to remember to go get the PvP zone stealth temps, those can be very handy while leveling, although it's a rare L50 build that doesn't already have stealth through IOs/Super Speed.
The most important thing, in my opinion, is to remember to use inspirations as you play. It amazes me sometimes how few inspirations I see on the team buff window during major fights. A little extra defense, resistance, accuracy, or damage can go a long way. -
Free? Sure, why not!
Good use of classic marketing, too. The more people you get into your store (even if that's a web page), the more likely you are to get some of them to buy something. -
You want something totally different as a change of pace, roll up a Mastermind.

I used my transporter several times over the weekend when doing the WST respecs. People loved it, especially blueside going from FF to Terra Volta. Well worth the points.
-
I'm running a 35 TW/EA brute with the Iron Eagles and he's a lot of fun. I'm one of those people that can live with the momentum mechanic, although I certainly do everything I can to minimize the slowness. Build Momentum is definitely your friend there. As is Energy Drain to keep the blue bar going. So far he hasn't really come near dying when soloing +0/x3, although there's been a few close calls on teams when multiple bosses take an interest in smacking him. Not yet to the cap level of defense.
-
On a stalker I don't see any problem with skipping Power Sink. You're probably not going to end up in too many situations where you've overextended and need to completely refill your End bar. Where Power Sink really shines is on brutes, who are constantly attacking and thus need the biggest chunk of End recovery possible; and blasters/corruptors/defenders, who can pop a small blue then use it to refill after a nuke.

Eight years. Not only is that a long time to play a game, it's a long time to do just about anything. Quite the accomplishment, CoH dev/support team! In that time, I have:
- Been promoted at work three times, and changed jobs once.
- Become an uncle three times.
- Bought one car and sold another.
- Moved twice, once to an apartment and the second time buying a condo.
- Played three other MMOs for at least a month (WoW, Star Trek Online, DCUO)...but always came back to CoH.
- Bought three different gaming rigs (and CoH looked better on each one).
- Attended at least four CoH meet and greets at GenCon (maybe more, I kinda lost count).
- Traveled to 6 different countries outside my home in the US (Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Japan).
-
I bought it last night, but RL forced me to log before I got on a team and tried it out. I'll certainly give it a shot during Iron Eagle team night. The mission teleporter is one of my favorite utility powers, so I figured a team version could only be better.

HeroStats looks at information available in the game client memory, mostly from what you see in the combat channels on your chat channels. It does not try to intercept or otherwise interpret traffic between the server and the client, nor does it make any updates to the game client, both of which would be particularly ugly EULA violations.
You can use VB (or C++, or C#...any .NET language) to make use of the HeroStats game client scanner. That's how the CoHLCD mod works. Unfortunately I don't have the source code for that, but if you can read C# code, you can look at the main HeroStats code to get an idea of how to use the scanner.
You might find the information in this post useful. It's not a tutorial or anything, but it does have some information on how things work. http://herostats.blogspot.com/2008/0...-issue-12.html -
I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say that not a whole lot happens. It's just the fact that I had the choice. I'm a villain, of *course* I'm going to attack the press conference!
-
I'm gonna lobby every Dev I can for the Vanity pet.

Quote:Agreed, loved the ships.I'm not so sure about te arc as a whole myself, but I did really enjoy a lot of aspects of the missions, and that last one was pretty cool. The floating ships were awesome. I just though they looked cool, and figured them for some interesting decoration, but the fact I got to run up them made it so much more awesome. I also liked the Press Conference mish.
I do wish Rula-Wade (and holy cow is that a stupid sounding name) had been more of a challenge. My brute tore through an L50 version in seconds solo, and with a team of 6 we toasted a L54 version pretty quickly.
But here's the best part..."Attack the press conference!" I have never felt more villainous! -
Between playing the many other games I got during the holidays, and work being crazy busy since the New Year, I haven't had a lot of time to spend on CoH. No time to write up any story background, either.
I did manage to run a few weekly strike forces with Shadow of Disgrace in the last month, though, which got him to level 38. Here's the current build. It's working pretty well - other than one close call on an ITF, he hasn't been in any real danger of dying for quite some time. I took Cloak of Fear at 38 just because I didn't have anything planned, but sometime soon I'm going to need to respec into a build that will take me the rest of the way to 50.

Thanks, Steel. I've gotten the build in place now, but haven't run anything significant in a while. (Too busy with other games obtained over the holidays!) Still, on a few tip missions he seems to run really well. The real test will come once I22 is out and I have incentive to run some teams with him.
-
I got my Dark/Dark stalker to 50 many months ago, and then promptly shelved him while I played toons that were actually able to contribute to teams. Other than the occasional foray into a TF to work on shard-gathering (and I still haven't gotten enough for a tier 3 alpha), he's been gathering dust. The proposed I22 changes have piqued my interest, though, so I figured it was time for a rebuild.
I aimed primarily for smash/lethal soft-cap, and almost got there (43.7%). I didn't think the last 1.3% was worth the sacrifices necessary to put the IO sets I need into mule powers. With either Agility or Nerve alpha I'd be soft-capped anyway, and I also have Shadow Meld, which when active soft-caps me to everything but psionic. I figure as long as I'm not trying to tank, that should be sufficient, especially with Siphon Life and Dark Regen to refill health when something gets through.
I skipped both Cloak of Fear and Oppressive Gloom. Neither seems all that useful for a low-HP melee toon, unless you're trying to stack them with some other character's control. More defense and more damage seemed more helpful.
Any comments or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Build: Origin
Shadow of Disgrace is now level 31. Current build shown below. I have a second build with almost no offensive powers and fully slotted (with SOs) defenses, but I haven't used it yet. I really only created it in case I run across something like a TF composed of myself and 7 blasters. It may never be necessary.
I ran the Sister Psyche TF with a group from Justice United last night, and I was very happy with how he performed. Other than being unable to save certain silly teammates when they aggroed three groups at once (and thus exceeded my aggro cap), everything went very well. Only had to use Dark Regen once or twice. Clamor was a pushover, never managed to drop me below 3/4 health.
I'm slowly but surely working my way to Task Force Commander. I've run Posi (both), Synpase, and Sister Psyche now. I'll probably run Manticore sometime this week since it's the WTF, circle back to get Citadel, and hopefully that'll get me to 35 for Numina.

Story: Origin
Below Pandora's Box in Talos Island, a ritual was underway. Several people sat in a darkened room, forming a loose circle around one man. There was no movement, no sound. The ritual had started here, but now the activity was on another plane of existance.
Three Days Earlier
Gregor Richardson, Azuria, and Shadow of Disgrace sat in the MAGI office of Atlas Park, at a table littered with the results of a long afternoon's work. Everything from the latest computer files to scrolls of ancient knowledge had been consulted. All this effort was bent on one question: Which demonic forces had been used in the 5th Column experiments that created Anonymous Hate? (For more on Anonymous Hate and those experiments, see AE arc 529006, A Binding of Hate.)
"Someone went to a lot of trouble to hide the origin of their demonic powers." Gregor frowned as he once again consulted the original 5th Column files. "Not a single clue about which demons were bound into the original human subjects."
Azuria sighed. "We've been over those files a dozen times already. And cross-referenced the time of the experiments with records of known demon activity. Nothing stands out. We simply do not know the original demon source."
"Yet we cannot accept failure." The strain of the long search showed in the voice of Shadow of Disgrace, but his tone was still firm. "Anonymous Hate is still dangerous, even after I re-sealed his prison. We need a way to deal with him permanently."
"Yes, and in such magical matters, the original source is often the answer." Azuria gestured at the untidy heap of research materials. "But our knowledge is lacking."
Gregor leaned forward. "We do have another option. The Rite of Origin can be used to trace the originator of magical powers and abilities."
Shadow of Disagrace shook his head. "That rite requires a willing participant. Anonymous Hate will never agree, even if we were to risk his escape by unsealing his prison. He would be cooperating in his own destruction!"
"Perhaps there is another alternative." Azuria pulled a sheaf of papers from the table and held them up for emphasis. "Your own report says that Anonymous Hate called you 'brother'. What if we performed the Rite of Origin on you, Shadow of Disgrace?"
The Plane of Shadow
The Rite searched. Here there was no Shadow of Disgrace, Azuria, or Gregor...only the Rite, using the power of the mages to trace the hero's origin. Others back in Talos Island were watchful, prepared to pull the Rite apart if danger appeared.
The Rite sensed magical power in a way no human could, detecting subtle differences that would go unnoticed at any other time. The search had led it to the demonic planes, and eventually here to the Plane of Shadow. The powers that protected Shadow of Disgrace in battle originated on this plane, and the Rite followed that link, weak though it was.
Powerful though it was in human terms, the Rite was nothing compared to the massive magical potentials of the Plane of Shadow. It moved through the plane like an ant among giants, hoping to go unnoticed while completing the mission. One mountain of dark power after another went past as the Rite searched for the exact match to the powers of Shadow of Disgrace. Time passed, though the Rite did took no notice of this; the search was everything.
Eventually the Rite found its quarry. The trail led directly to a vast vortex of dark power. The Rite could go no further without being destroyed by that maelstrom. It began to retreat...but was held fast.
Dark Power
Shadow of Disgrace found himself alone, in perfect darkness. He called out, but could not hear his own voice. He tried to reach for the Rite, but found nothing. Azuria and Gregor were nowhere to be found. Then words formed in his mind; not a voice, but an overwhelming presence that disdained mere barriers of flesh, or the privacy of the human mind.
Foolish, allowing yourself to be brought here with merely human protection, my child.
Images flashed through his mind. Himself, laying waste with vast swaths of pale flame to an opposing army. Another army, wiped away by a dark wave from a burning figure - Anonymous Hate. Himself battling Anonymous Hate, pale fire against pitch-black blows. Both combatants, lying senseless upon scorched and barren ground.
You, who were cast out in disgrace from the power of the shadow, and have not yet regained the power that is your birthright.
A 5th Column base, rows upon rows of people strapped to beds, being injected by lab technicians. Himself on one bed. The same base, burning, as an indistinct figure stumbles out and away. Himself walking along a road, toward the blue shimmer of the War Walls of Paragon City. Battles against Burnscar, Frostfire, the Lost. Companions: the Iron Eagles, Azuria, Gregor, Prince.
You fear your brother, driven by hatred to mindlessly destroy, growing in power with every passing moment.
The same 5th Column base, trapped subjects and technicians. This time Anonymous Hate on a bed. Anonymous Hate free, laughing, destroying everything he can reach. A circle of mages outside the base, chanting, raising a seal. Jucre, breaking the seal. Himself, standing over Anonymous Hate, sealing him away once again.
Both of you are aspects of myself, bound to mutated human forms, let loose in the human world. Either your brother shall destroy that world, or you shall preserve it.
Conciousness faded as the final words seared into his mind.
Return
He awoke to find the other particpants in the ritual gathered around him, once again in the room below Pandora's Box. No one else remembered anything after arriving on the Plane of Shadow. After recounting his experience, they considered the situation.
"One thing is clear," he told Gregor and Azuria. "The origin of Anonymous Hate is my own as well, and it is my duty to find a way to defeat him to preserve this world."
"We are no closer to finding the way to do that." Azuria sighed.
Gregor said, "What you heard implied that it is possible: '...or you shall preserve it.'"
"Indeed," said Shadow of Disgrace, "and I will find the way." -
Excellent, will be there (real life permitting). I'd like to run a tanker Manticore if we can get one organized, need that WTF reward goodness on a couple of my Justice tanks.

I've respeced into the build in the original post, and I'm pretty happy with it. Ran an ITF and a couple BAFs with no real issues - not trying to do anything crazy like soloing AVs or whatever, but the build works fine as part of a team.

Seriously though, I think these might be entertaining.
I'm looking forward to 'em. Not just for purples, might be useful for rares too.
