Sunstorm's latest post in the base forums:
Quote:His post to the base forums before that:I'm still working on content for bases, and we have some very big plans waiting in the wings, but for right now my main focus is on GR. (In fact, the projects I'm working on are so big I barely have time to get away to post.)
Quote:Right now I'm pretty heavily booked on a lot of upcoming features, so I won't get much posting time.
Heh, if only I could tell you all what I am working on, I'm pretty sure you'll like it. Unfortunatly, I can say it isn't bases though.
In looking back to Nov. of last year, when Sunstorm was introduced, a few things are clicking for me:
Quote:In Issue 13 Sunstorm has been key in working out powers under Castle, and working on the Base forefront. Quote:Ill be working with Castle on designing new game features and setting up new powers. Ill also be primarily responsible for Bases and a number of other things to come. -
I'm assuming you have enough space on your plot grid? can you provide screenies?
-
I don't think we're going to accomplish much in asking for new shineys at this point. As Caleb says, they are focused on GR, and Sunstorm himself has said that any new base shineys are a long way off.
However, I don't see that as an excuse to ignore longstanding problems that could be fixed. All I have to do is go to MadScientist's list of i12 issues to pick out a few:
Quote:Adding my own peeve:on Storage:
- Storage logs have lost functionality when they were merged to only one log per base. Can the log entry include some way of knowing (and filtering on) which storage item the entry applies to? Conversely, this could go to the other extreme with storage being universal for the base and the items merely adding capacity. eg, one collective Enhancement list when you click any Enhancer Table. The current implementation, however, is not efficient being in between those two ideas.
- Base storage repainting the base upon use can cause crashing, lag, and visual problems.
- Storage needs to be sortable, or simply default sorted by item instead of by time (such as using the same sort order as an NPC store)
- Storage log can be spammed to remove history - should something be guaranteed to exist for a length of time before being pushed off the list?
- Storage doesn't always remember who placed an item, and definitely forgets it all if you move the storage to a new room.
- Lack of a way to pool Recipe resources among a SG. Those should have SG Storage items.
- Whatever happened to seeing Salvage Storage from a Worktable/Empowerment? (If that idea was dropped, just tell us and we'll stop asking.)
- Text labels on Storage item interface would help organize items, since groups have many diverse systems for that. (eg, "Magic Enhancers only in here")
- Why are teleporter rooms unable to hold storage?
- Storage limits are too harsh. 30 pieces per rack is not enough to support a SG much larger than 3-5 players with their alts. When storage limits were nerfed in i13, it was promised that it would be reconsidered after a time..... IT'S TIME. Please raise the limit to at least 100 items per rack so we can quit using our lvl 50 char's as salvage mules.
Quote:Base Usage bugs - Upkeep Overpayment - if you pay too early, your next bill for rent will be due 2 weeks earlier than it should
- Game Client can shutdown while you are zoning to your base with the message ""You have been forcibly disconnected from the server. MapShuttingDown"
- Empowerment stations list 15 minute durations, they were changed to 1 hour in the 8.16.06 patch but the text was not updated.
- What's the status on the Cathedral of Pain and Items of Power? What exactly was broken about it? (Players have some likely causes, but no Dev has ever spoken on it.) Maybe knowing where the problems are, the community can suggest COP/IOP designs without those troublesome parts of the system.
- Inf to Pres trade-in at the Register is a huge ripoff. A level 50 turning on SG Mode gives up about 150,000 Inf in order to earn 2,000 Prestige, the Register charges 1 million for 2k. Certainly SG Mode should remain the best income source, but the Register should be close, not 500:1. If there's an issue with too much converting, have the Register trade 100:1 to reduce Rent, thus limiting how much you can trade in.
- Unable to control the direction you face on zone-in
- Combat Logs is too weak for its huge prerequisite. In fact, with inspiration merging, it's hardly worth the placement cost even if it's earned.
- Mission Computer needs more use (see wishlist)
- Most Empowerment buffs are considered insanely weak, and most are rather dull since you can get better effects from Inspirations. Tangent thread on Empowerment, since there's a lot to focus on.
- Inability to use the Base features when teamed in a co-op zone.
- Why do certain zones lack beacons: Cimerora/Midnighter's, Ouroboros, FBZ. Is there a reason PVP zones lack beacons?
- Lack of PVE uses for the huge amount of raid-related base items. Some ideas,
- - PVE raids. ie: defend your base against the game's AI. or raid a pre-made base defended by the AI.
- - Justify "raidable" items with a PVE usage. For example, give a PVE reason to have to leave a clear path to your generator, such as giving the generator a clickable function.
- - Make some items no longer require pathing, such as Control Aux and Teleport Beacons. (Though see the next item.)
- Teleport Beacons are difficult to distinguish, especially Arcane ones. Even when distinguished it's hard to know which beacon goes to which porter. (Though in fairness, is that second issue more of an architect problem than a dev problem?) Suggestion: Have all active beacons usable from any teleporter (similar to how a storage log works on all tables at once) so you don't need to go searching.
- Power Liberator / Master Thief is not obtainable. Given questions about how it was earned, perhaps the fairest solution is to change the badge requirement to winning any raid by any victory condition.
-
It's not just chairs and curbs... The floor levels in bases are 4 ft intervals; a single floor raised is 4 ft, double raised is 8 ft.. Stairs and ramps will only get ya so far; they can't be placed in doorways, for instance.

Quote:*rolleyes*So, just for clarification, you think it's totally cool for the people who made the off-topic whine posts to have done that, then?
There you go putting words in my mouth again.
Quote:I don't, so I see the retaliation as deserved and not at all inappropriate.
(and yes, two Wrights made an airplane, but that's another topic entirely)
Retaliation accomplishes nothing but escalation.
I am no longer interested in engaging in further discussion regarding this.
My way is my way, as yours is yours. -
Quote:Paint it any color of justification you want.
... Players and REDNAME put on the sarcastic hats and made fun of the people who seem to think that BABs and the animation team somehow cost them fixes for things that are not in their department.
It's still not cool in my book. -
If you go into you group's discussion "thread", you can "subscribe" to it via the "thread tools". Just like a regular forum thread. It will then show in your CP along with any other threads/forums you've subscribed to.

Zombie, I agree with you for the most part. That was actually the point of my first post initially.
What I was seeing was this:
So I called BS.- players see a shiney in the patch notes
- patch note thread becomes a rave about the new shiney
- some players say "meh, I'd rather see something else", or some other non-shiney comment.
- players and REDNAME put on their sarcastic hats and proceed to make fun of those who disagree with them.
It is not my intention to make this thread a commentary on all the love that bases need... been there, done that.
I am indifferent to the walking animation. Most likely, I'll end up taking it out of my trays and just leaving it in the power list.
I am also indifferent to the new costume naming, though I will appreciate the extra costume token. -
Quote:One word: Salvage
Wait, what exactly needs to be fixed with the bases?! I don't see any 'bugs' with bases. Bases were never more fun to design than they are now. At least that's my observation.
If by "base fixing" you mean bringing their raid functionality, then that's not really a purely base-related task. It also depends heavily on the PvP side of things. Furthermore, it is understandable why that functionality would be pushed back cause not a lot of people used bases for raiding.
If by "base fixes" you're referring to "base love", then yes. I agree with you. Bases do need some love. But again, as it is, bases are incredibly fun to design. The only thing they need is a better UI and a whole bunch of new objects to work with, and some minor points here and there. I really can't see any other major area of improvement for bases. So, again, I understand why it's set on low priority.
Edit to add more words:
There are more "quick wins", but that one tops my list every time. -
Quote:You are ... optimistic... methinks.
One thing some of us learned at the Con was that BaBs squeezes in things when he can. It's not unreasonable to extrapolate that others might do the same.... I like nice surprises too.
This might be happening with bases too. Or it might not. You'll find out one day. Wait for it. Bathe in the awesome when it's your time. -
I know you didn't.
Sorry if it seemed like I thought you did, it was meant more "generally".
Not at all. I personally have no problem that it got done. Zippity doo da for those who wanted it. So, how 'bout a bone or two for everyone else?... y'know non-animation related?
Thank you for that.
Quote:I'm just trying to explain that the existence of this Walk toggle is not proof that it was prioritized over base upgrades.
Quote:It was just easier and quicker to do and someone had time to do it. A "quick win", as it were.
Have to disagree here. When a community is introduced to a redname and are told "This guy is YOUR guy", that implies that the community is going to get a little priority. When that redname is then pulled away to work in a completely different capacity, that would be putting said community back on low priority. And given the comments made at Herocon, it's quite obvious that the priority has dropped even further. Bases do NOT stand in the same place they were before. -
Quote:Right, but you're still making the assumption that we get one or the other. That because we got a Walk toggle, we won't get base improvements or that time was somehow taken away from working on base improvements (by whoever does that). This is the part that is wrong.
Saying "the time spent on the walk toggle could have been better spent on base improvements" is ridiculous. Because it's time spent simultaneously by different departments. Time taken from one does not go to the other. Implying or assuming that because we got a Walk toggle, base improvements are further down the road than they were, is just silly. And wrong. And /em facepalm worthy.
First of all, lets be clear; I am not making assumptions regarding the allotment of resources.
I can understand your point, but I've interpreted the other poster's comments a little differently.
Perhaps, because I am accutely aware that Sunstorm is the person who is supposed to be working on bases, but is instead working on powers and "other stuff". It was made very clear at Herocon that Base love of any kind (fixes or new shineys) are definitely on the waaaay back burner, and set on LOW simmer.
This is frustrating. I can understand no new shineys, but no FIXES? Base Builders have sat back very quietly and said very little over the year (since last year's salvage fiasco). So, is it not understandable that when we see a walk animation given so much hoopdaloola, that we might actually be a little put out?
Oh, and was my previous post really that neg-worthy? seriously? -
You can go to your options/keymapping window and set a key to toggle the UI. Then, hit that key before taking your screenshot.
Once toggled, you don't need to hit it again unless you want to turn it off for a "clean" screenie.
The UI will automatically default to "off" when you've logged out, so the next time you need it on, you'll need to toggle it again. -
Quote:Begging your pardon BAB, but I don't see where PhantomRanger asked or implied that YOU were the one who should be fixing bases.Quote:I normally don't question changes made. But really what practical application does walking have? We can't use powers while walking. Why, why, why is this important? I know many players would have rather used this time for base improvements.
I hope I don't run out of keyframes for that one. I better order some more just to make sure I'm covered.
He simply stated his opinion that the walking animation doesn't really carry as much importance to him as base fixes, and that he would have rather seen base fixes in the patch notes.
This is supposed to be a thread regarding thoughts/opinions on the patch notes, right? -
Just a little update.
Got a note from the artist, he says the work is done and he'll be sending it via Priority mail tomorrow... er, today.
So here's hoping he paid attention to my last notes (one detail, which I sent along with that last letter). But honestly, at this point, I think I'll just be glad to have a completed piece and be done with this whole ordeal. -
Quote:Don't get me started...More accurately the latest attempt to improve and stabilize base raiding failed so they disabled it, and implemented the changes to base editing to throw people a bone.
Short answer: no raids.. and according to comments from Herocon... not likely any time soon. -
When I was just a wee tyke, this kid was my hero!
(no makin funah mah age, ya whippersnappers!)
Marine Boy Intro
He was sooo cool! He breathed underwater via "oxygum", had underwater vehicles, propulsion boots, thowing explody thingys, a tame dolphin and a cute mermaid friend. What wasn't there to idolize?
It's all about suspension of disbelief. -
Quote:Which is what I've been talking about all along...Presumably those rules also apply to rep ranking comments?
So, we've already got a system whereby victims of genuinely abusive vituperation can seek redress, yes?
I haven't been "moaning on" about the rep system. I gave my opinion on it a few pages back...
Quote:My personal OPINION is that the system is not being used "as intended", has become a point of contention (this thread & several others as proof), has become a "mod sink", and does not contribute to the purpose of forum discussion.
Quote:Moderation around here is like feeding time at the preschool- the loudest babies get all the attention. I'm surprised you haven't figured that out yet.
It just makes you a bully-goat. -
Quote:Or do you want them to disable THE FORUMS, to spare the fainting couch crew potential exposure to uncivil discourse?
LOL
No need to disable the Forums on account of that... there are RULES to address "uncivil discourse" (rule # 2 even specifies "disrespectful behavior").
They are not MY rules, they are the rules set by the moderators of these forums.
Purposely engaging in "uncivil discourse" (whether in posts or in rep comments) in order to garner certain kinds of reactive responses will most likely eventually garner the attention of the mod-stick.
Hence, Niv's announcement.
And now we've come full circle. -

Quote:How nice of you to quote only the first part of my post.I made rude and inflammatory comments to his face in that thread.
Are those somehow better because they were made in public, where everyone else could see them, instead of in a dark corner of the forum where only MageX can see them?
As to your question, please see the second part of the same post:
So, no - it does not make it any better. -
Quote:Two wrongs don't make a right.Quote:You should see the rep messages i got for opening a topic in this section where i stated a personal feeling and opinion. the rep system is for quantifying(hope i spelled it right) the quality of someone's posts not for anonymous bashing and trolling someone's thoughts/ideas/opinions with rude and passive agressive messages. To me those sorts of messages mean absolutely nothing since the user sending them does so anonymously.
'k
Whether or not Mage's posts deserved the neg rep is not the point. The point is that the comments associated with those reps were (by Mage's account) overly rude and inflammatory.
Trolling and flamebaiting are against the rules, whether in a post or in rep comments. Just because one might feel that someone else is "borderline against the rules" in their posts does not make it okay to leave similar comments in their rep.
