I always felt the same way. In City of Heroes, I actually have a CHOICE to take it lazy and just do SOs, or do IOs without worrying about bonuses, or min/max a character with specific IO focusing on set bonuses (which I found extremely boring, by the way). Keep in mind, all 3 options allow me to play the game without worries of being barred from doing any activity in the game.
In a certain other powerhouse MMO which I left City of Heroes for because they had a shiny new expansion on the market, starting the game fresh from level 1 with no money or materials, the game was abysmal and hard to play, unlike in City of Heroes where one can start fresh from level 1 with no money or materials and STILL have fun. Anyways, back to the other MMO. I felt like I eventually HAD to learn the market and how to play to have any money, and I actually had to HALT my leveling process to traverse the world and farm materials to sell, use, and upgrade stuff with, just so those new shinies could be replaced in short order by something else I stumble upon, therefore making the material grinding moot. So despite all of this, I somehow made it to the level cap, and I'm kinda wishing I didn't. Now I had to farm materials, tedious dungeons, and other unfun stuff just so I could get my hands on the newest shiny armor to meet the requirements of other "holier than thou" players so I could do the raid content. A week in, I was sick of it. I quit and came back to City of Heroes.
Moral of the story? Never, ever, make grinding materials a focus of ANY game. -

I've never noticed that.
Vanden, you are responsible for making me laugh so hard I woke everyone in the house up at 7 am. -
I agree that taking on Cole shouldn't be a trial, but I have nothing to contribute when it comes to how a Cole TF would work.
Instead, I say this: If it is a trial, it better be MASSIVE and EPIC. I'm not talking about the epic level we've seen before with the new story arcs. I want a new level of epic. Something that puts any players who go after Cole on the top, which also means it would have to be extremely difficult as well, so everyone has to contribute in some way.
Well, either that or you could add a few Goliaths doing the Robot. -
It's a start, and I like where you're coming from. It's definitely a solo Incarnate path and it still makes you feel like you're doing something.

I actually stopped using veteran powers after 10ish.

I've realized that it's been a little more than a month and a half since I've played my Determinator. I know, shame on me, but with the barrage of new content (DFB, New Atlas, New powersets, more character slots, SSAs, etc.), I've just been distracted enough that I haven't even been able to raise my funds, play any of my existing characters that aren't new and shiney (in the time that Poor Prospect has been sitting, I've had a brute, 2 scrappers, and a dominator who haven't gotten 1 drop of XP in the past 3 months), and it's bothering me.
As a result, for now, I'm calling off my Determinator project. Level 22 isn't a bad haul since it was before i21 hit, and before we got our "legal farming" (start the flaming) trials and easier ways to team, and it's also made me appreciate just how awesome the devs let us make our characters.
So yes, please use this thread to call me a wuss for giving up due to distractions and money issues. -
I honestly couldn't really complain about the BAF/Lambda changes when I read the Keyes changes. Maybe now people will actually run it.
Oh wait, nevermind. Probably just gonna get overshadowed by TPN. -
The only thing I don't like about Street Justice...
Where's my dropkick!? -
-
Just so I can keep this thread alive somewhat, I'll be taking a few weeks break from this character for i21, since I have a LOT of stuff planned.
-
Count me out. I'd rather stick on Virtue to help usher in the Freems and make sure they know what they're doing.
-
Of all the villains group I've seen in this game, I think the mutated Seers and the Harpy-things win the prize for creepiest design.
-
Well, my one cat... I already know what he would be.
Shui - Dark/WP Scrapper
Shui has always been a cool cat ever since he was born. He's all black except for a white streak that runs down his underside. I think he would have Dark Melee, because he would just decide to use Dark Melee. He's a boss like that.
A few years ago, Shui decided he wanted to be an outside cat. Of course I couldn't stop him, so he roams outside now. He gets in fights all the time, but comes out like a pro.
Shui is also one of the only animals I know to survive Gangrene without medical attention of any kind. Completely healed up, just because he took it. -
DAY 7 WRAP UP
---
Reeeally slow day today too. I think it's because the mobs are starting to grow in strength, while I feel like my attacks are just getting weaker. Only got another level, so that's no good either.
I'm gonna make it up this weekend. -
DAY 7
--
So no one has costume suggestions? Jeez, you people making me do everything myself.
I think I should be able to continue my Faultline arcs now that I'm level 20. We'll see what happens.
Can't wait to pick up SOs, that's for sure! -
DAY 6 WRAP UP
---
So I found out I couldn't continue my Faultline arcs for some odd reason. Jim wouldn't give me Penelope Yin, even though I was level 18 when I talked to him to begin with.
Anyways, I decided to throw up my flag and continue my Midnighter arc... with the dreaded Lady Jane mission.
Anyways, I won't go through specifics, but this was even worse than leading Fusionette around, and I died before she even hit half health. Thankfully, I got a team invite.
Standard team, everyone was interested in my Determinator challenge, and someone argued that a petless MM is still worse.
I got to 20 and picked up Quick Recovery. Yay, more recovery!
Sadly, I'm risking cutting into my exercise time if I play any longer, so I had to quit, but I did unlock my second costume before I logged off.
Anyone wanna submit some costume ideas? I'll take anything, and I'll even give a shout out to you in my description.
Oh, by the way, thanks for the recipes everyone. -
Quote:MAN builds are actually more hardcore than the Determinator build, so more power to you.I did in fact pull out my MAN build last night. 1940s MAN was even invited to a team!
I've got a warning blazed in the search field, and reminded the leader of it once I was on board, but they were generous folks and didn't care.
So I've now made it to level 19! Woo! Mind you, this is on a character at least 5 years old now. I don't pull him out often. But I've gotten to the point where I have all 3 Leadership toggles and I leverage my vet/day-job/temp powers like crazy. I'm actually an almost-competent team member!
Oh, pools I'm using: Fighting and Leaping for offense and defense (lvl 20 will be Acrobatics) and Leadership for lessening the general suckage and to help teams. If I ever make it to the mid 20s, I'll pick up Medicine for the last regular pool. I haven't given any thought whatsoever to which epic pool to go for.
But it is cool to see that even a deliberately gimped toon can be fun to play. Definitely keeps you on your toes, and teaches you good pulling and insp-use techniques. -
DAY 6
---
Hm... I got a few things I could do today. I could grab a team and try to get to level 20 very quickly, or I could continue my Faultline arcs. First thing's first, gotta grab my temporary powers.
Just so we all have something to discuss, has anyone else considered making a Determinator? -
Quote:That's why I avoided a Swap Ammo gimmick entirely. Why would I, when I can post a TVtropes article, instead, and ruin lives by doing so?
*edit*
I also wonder if it's not possible to make the set's gimmick the ability to switch between forward and reverse grip and in so doing alter the entire set, like having one be faster but weaker while the other is stronger but slower or some such? Then again, having seen what Swap Ammo did to Dual Pistols, I'm not sure I want that. -
I was honestly expecting something like this for Synapse...
"Being a speedster is tough, especially on my feet, so when I'm shopping for running shoes, I always look for the check mark on the side..." -
DAY 5 WRAP UP
---
Jeez! Today was definitely a slow day. I only got one level, but for good reason...
I started Jim Temblor's arc today with a game plan. I know, as most vets do, that Fusionette is a bane of society that needs to burn, but I decided that relying on her as a "good" ally would take some determination. So, I was able to fight through the Lost and get Fusionette.
I was gonna use her knockback to my advantage.
Sike.
Fusionette died in short order, between the incoming ambushes and her knocking everything everywhere, I couldn't kill things fast enough and tank well enough to stop her from dying. Mission failed.
So I took a different approach. Let me just form a team.
So I rounded up a rag tag team of 5 and we started the next mission: the fight with Kurse.
Kurse went down pretty easily, and I picked up a level. I think even at one point, I use soloing Kurse...
Soloing an Elite Boss.
Anyways, I grabbed Air Superiority, upgrading my attack chain to 3 attacks: Boxing, Jump Kick, and Air Superiority.
Next mission! Stop Nocturne from escaping. Now, I've run this mission countless times, so I knew exactly what to do. What I didn't count on was the countless number of Mu inside the big sewer room. We were dealt with in short order, but that's what determination is for! Grabbed some blues and purples, and showed that entire room I meant business. Time to go to ground level. We handled the first group, took out the sub, and sent Nocturne packing within 3 minutes.
Now that's determination.
Oh, and I updated Poor Prospect's look.
What do you think? -
