Copyright wise I *think* it would come under the fansite rules. I'm not certain though.
Time needed - a lot. Hosting would be about $10/month that someone would have to cover. Most of the work is layout though, it probably needs minimal input if all you want is an RP environment, much much more if we want it to be combat-capable, since that's a complete rework of the combat system (took about 6 months IIRC for the one started at Uni)
So long as everything you want is already in the base mudlib, it's just changing descriptions.
For IRC, I'd strongly recommend a dedicated server. That said, they're not that hard to set up, and a home broadband connection should be able to support one with the level of usage we'd be needing. It just depends if someone has a spare box to host it (I looked at setting one up for our IRC games, what's mostly stopping me is my laptop has a bad habit of rebooting unexpectedly and I'm still waiting to upgrade my desktop so I'll have that free) -
You know, depending on hosting options that might actually be easier. I know the old discworld sourcecode and libraries are open-source, I've scripted under them before for startups, and while fancy stuff like powers is beyond me, physical layout, npc scripting and descriptions are so easy a child could do it (well, I *was* 15 when I started
)
Depends if one of the proper coders *looks at RW and FFM in particular* is willing to try and do the fancy stuff that will make it live. From memory it's a c-variant code used on the discworld codebase. -
Ok...less caffeine for you.
Pro's - No subscription, allows for the GG style freeform to be continued
Con's - Netsplit, Netsplit, Netsplit :P
Other things to think about - no missions, no graphics, no mechanism for bringing in new players.
I think it could work as a supplement to GG/CoH based RP, I don't think it could replace it entirely.
The biggest hurdle will be finding a stable server, since it's hard enough right now to keep 4 people together on undernet.
Anyone got a spare server lying around? -

Hmm, now that you mention it... only Juan is in any kind of organized SG. Alex and Zortel are in the Vigil, which doesn't really exist anymore, and the rest of mine are in small SG's just for bases.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm sorry, did you just imply the GoD are organised?
Welcome Star Jewel, most of us don't bite
And only Hiki/Min of mine is IC grouped, all the others just sit in one of the base groups 'cos prestige is far too rare. -

No, it just points out the world is static. Nothing more, nothing less.
I can't think of any MMORPG that would keep its mobs defeated/slain. Gameplay > Roleplay with a lot of today's market.
[/ QUOTE ]
There is the Sleeper in EQ, but it's a relatively specialised case.
[/ QUOTE ]
Horizons, plenty of server specific world-changing events.
But then again, reclaining the world *was* the entire point of the game, so a static world wouldn't work.
Shame there's no-one left but the dragons really. -
Ummm, because we're roleplayers and this is the roleplay discussion board?
The origional point of the discussion was to decide on an IC viewpoint on prisoners escaping from the zig for the purpose of a player run plot. -
I think you're missing the point Syra, no-one is arguing that the game world isn't static, we're arguing how to apply an IC justification to best fit that mould.
There *are* escaped prisoners running round the streets of brickstown. Either they aren't being rearrested, or more are escaping to replace the ones that are.
I'm not sure how many AV's actually escape the Zig at the end of their capture missions, I can think of many it doesn't state (mostly TF ones or praetorians), many that escape badly wounded (Dr Vhaz), die (Nemesis, Giovanna) or are banished (the Envoy), but the only one's I can actually think of you arresting are Countess Crey and Vanessa, off hand, and of those I'm pretty sure they stay in Jail, according to the storyline, and you have to apply a lot of fudge.
So I'm inclined to say that the Zig *might* be able to hold a high-threat villain, but the mooks are a joke. They're either out the next day with community service orders or wandering off for a stroll around Brickstown.
Either than or the gangs should have taken over years ago since they'd have to have at least half the city population. (City of Gangers for the next expansion maybe?) -
Well, it looks like it's turning into a Guardians day out, so I might as well wander along.
Hikari-Hime, 50 Emp/Psi/Psi, and I'll probably have Doctor Temporis, 49 Grav/Kin, in tow. -
IC 14/06/06 1.30am
Hikari opened her eyes, putting her hand to her head as a rhythmic thumping intruded on her consciousness, senses slowly returning as she slipped back into her body.
Stupid girl, Victoras in orbit, you have no idea what youre doing to yourself, how far is safe.
The world swam into full focus, and it finally dawned on her that the thumping was coming from the wall next to her, not her head after all. Hikari got to her feet, pushing her hair back out of her face, and muttered under her breath. Guess Id better go apologise, I warned her to stay awake
She opened the door and stepped out into the corridor, the door next to hers almost indistinguishable from her own apart from the large bolt on the outside of the door. Hikari took a deep breath and slid the bolt back, ducking as she opened the door slightly in case whatever Mina was pounding the wall with got aimed at her head. Mina would know exactly where she was, they had to concentrate not to know.
Nothing flew at the door, and Hikari looked round it to see Mina sitting cross-legged on the bed, the chair floating in midair and pounding against the wall rhythmically. She looked up at Hikari. Finally, you took long enough to wake up.
Hikari sighed and stepped into the room. Im sorry, I know I promised to only do it while you were awake, but it was important Mina shook her head, rising to her feet with practiced grace. I know, and Chichi looked so tired, is that why he hasnt come to visit us?
Hikari nodded at her, a faint frown of puzzlement on her face as Mina looked down at the floor for a moment as if considering something before looking up at her. I I want to help too
Hikari shook her head slightly. Papa wont let you, I dont know if hell even let me, I mean, I cant cross the portals, I cant leave you, I cant take you into the middle of a firefight
Mina looked sharply at her. Im going to help, I dont care what, even if its just making cups of coffee, and not actually fighting, I have to do something, anything Her voice trailed off and she looked pleadingly at Hikari.
Hikari bit her lip, then nodded. Ok, well go find Papa, but not right now, hes still on the station, and we both need some real sleep. In the morning I promise. -
From my experience (and I had a near guarantied team so was a fairly team centered build) it depends on your level and your build.
Low levels an empath solo's as well as anyone else, 20-40's depends very much on your build, and will probably mean dropping out single target buffs and heals in favour of your attacks.
40+, especially with stamina, you are a regen blaster. Stick your difficulty up to invincible and go for it.
This requires a fairly secondary heavy build (I have all bar 3 attacks, and the 3 I'm missing I consider not worth having) and I couldn't handle invincible until 44, but that's because I play like a controller and needed telekineses before I could actually get enough mag to knock out bosses.
In all seriousness, I recommend finding a duo-partner if you don't want large teams. Inv tank+RA+RecA+Fort+AB is a scary thing to behold, and you can sit back and blast quite happily knowing you're not going to pull the aggro back onto yourself, and their health bar ain't dropping a bit, no matter what you're fighting. -
No idea about the Russian part of the world history, but Paragon City is in Rhode Island State, USA.
At least, at some point that was where we figured out that's where it should be, and the laws we look at if we're curious. -
I appologise, but having seen a good friend try this and have it flop, I have 2 main reasons for being slightly negative. 1 is that you have to understand what you're really up against, and 2 is that I don't want someone else getting hurt over something like this, because it does hurt when you put your heart and soul into a community project and then have to watch it die.
I can't give you ideas, if I had them, they would have already been implemented! or at least tried. I can give you feedback on ideas you suggest though.
Personally, I think an inegrated set of fourms would be nice, but I'm enough of a realist to know that unless you have a lot of posters there generating constant new content, I'll get bored and never check them. I suspect the same is true of most other forumites.
I don't go to forums to post, I go to read. Occasionally I'll join an active topic, but I'm not someone who generates a lot of debate and content.
For ideas - A character histories section would be nice, right now you have to trawl through the rest of the creative section, or look on the wiki. A news section would be nice, but I think doomed to failure unless you focused on one particular group, since there's no consistant world view, and can't be one. IC chat areas would be nice, I don't know how much use they'd get since most of us work, and when we're not at work we're in game, so what's the point. SG info and OOC event info would be nice, but I'm sure you were thinking of more than a glorified calendar
Ultimately what I think is achievable is a character history archive - A function currently fulfilled by the GGwiki, a history of plots - a function currently fulfilled by the 9pm under GG's skirt thread, and a list of RP events - a function currently fulfilled by posting either here in the RP forum or the relavent server boards.
So, the ball's back in your court. What can your integrated forums do to make them better than hyjacking the official ones? I'll happily admit I'm stuck, since everything I can think of that would make them better requires constant access, like livechat. -
This is my point Reep, that I tried to make earlier.
Right now what you've got seems good, and if this was a brand new community I'd say go with it. It's not. It's established, entrenched, and spread all over the place.
What you're suggesting is, as far as I can see, fundamentaly the same as the corpse that is the GG forums. It never took off, it had a handful of posters trying to drum up interest, but it wasn't enough.
You're right, you need support and a lot of it, but I'm afraid saying "I need support" isn't going to get it. You need to convince people that unlike the other attempts, yours will do something they didn't and succeed.
Right now, I'm not convinced. And no amount of pleas will convince me. A clear plan might, but you're still going to need something special.
There's been a lot of posts recently about respect and critism, I have no faith in the idea as you've put it working, it's been tried exactly the same and failed dismally. More so, since the man setting it up was a well respected member of GG, and those that did post tried very hard to publicise it.
I'm not saying give up, far from it, but if you really want this to work you'll need a clear vision, a lot of drive, an ability to convince others to follow your lead, and have something they actually want to use. -
[ QUOTE ]
The GoD also don't generally kill, and make a point of the fact. Of course, like everything else in the GoD, this is only partly ethics, but also because Mina can see dead people and the fewer we cause, the better. Yes, we are slaves to her neuroses.
That said, we have had some rather cool RP out of it...
[/ QUOTE ]
I think Mina may be the only member of the GoD who *hasn't* killed actually.
Dark went psycho during the Light Stone incident, Sara went psycho during Tiamat, Doc murdered about 4000 council with a tacnuke (that one *really* upset Mina)...ok, I have no idea about Liz, I think it's her turn to go psycho next
Min can't kill, it's a simple as that. While she's better than she was (someone dying next to her isn't going to knock her out too any more) actually killing someone would put her through the same pain - it's an old adage that you can't strangle yourself, the same pretty much applies.
Of course, that's a lot easier to justify with a psi-blaster rather than a broadsword.
Senoi doesn't kill, using illusions to frighten people instead. She'll try and protect civillians, but she wouldn't be overly upset if someone died. She's not a murderer, but she accepts that sometimes you need to use leathal force.
Angela is pretty much the same (although most of her arresties are sent to the serious burns unit at the zig), she'd be upset if she killed a civilian, but not too phased by the occasional death during "arrest" so long as it wasn't too often.
Sami wouldn't care, but then again she *is* a partially redeemed villian. She won't hurt a bystander, but if they attack her they're fair game, and she's not going to cry over collateral.
I think that's all my IC heroes -
Utterly OT hijack:
OOC there's the GGOOC channel, public to join, OOC only, used for team formation and general gossip. Primarily used by members of the GG community, but certainly not limited to that.
IC there's the new Fusion FM channel that's being trialed (I saw trialed since whether it will work or fade out of use has yet to be seen). Details can be found on one of the other threads currently at the top of the forum.
Back on topic - Reep, I'm afraid you're currently fighting the most deadly of enemies - slackerness. In order for your idea to work you need to convince a lot of people, myself included I'm afraid, that an external set of forums is less effort than the forums here, or significantly better.
I hardly ever check my own SG forums (something I get away with because no-one else does I'll admit), and it would take something really special to get me to add a new forum to my list.
That said - convince me -
Apologies if I sound overly bossy. The following is just a *suggestion*, please debate, cut into pieces, throw bits away and keep the good stuff if there is any.
We need a set of conventions, I suggest the following highly influenced by IRC Ill admit.
Standard transmissions should contain some or all of the following:
In triangle brackets, the character (not global handle) sending the message. A decision needs to be taken if this handle is IC or OC if its IC I suggest the convention of someone hiding their identity putting something about the voice in there, if its OC just put Anon or something like that.
In asterisks, information about background sounds. This can be things like gunshots in the background, information about the voice, information about the transmission. Basically anything thats IC info that isnt spoken.
In double brackets, necessary OOC information. This should be kept to a minimum, all I can think of for this is stuff like ((all exemp/sk slots currently full))
For example:
@Hikari-Hime: <Subject Anjel>*gunshots and crashing in background* Hero needs assistance, SL 10, outcast rave in progress ((1 exepm/sk currently available))
@Hikari-Hime: <Deep husky voice> *crackles over transmission, no trace possible* A bomb will explode in the Mitasuna Technology offices in 30 minutes ((/t Senoi for invite))
Ultimately it doesnt matter what convention everyone uses, so long as everyone uses the same one (or at least ones similar enough to preserve clarity)
With regards to moderators, there need to be a fairly large number of them, whos job will be mainly to make sure that the conventions are followed, probably by a polite tell to any offenders with a reminder how the channel is supposed to be used, and the power to silence anyone misusing it.
Long OOC conversations about the football spring to mind, along with deliberate griefers, and those who stumble on the channel without actually knowing what it is.
My 2 inf, maybe theres something worth saving in there. -
Depends on how inclusive you want to be. You can make the channel invite only, at which point a mod has to be on to let new people in, or you can make the channel public, in which case I suggest a fair few trusted mods to enforce the channel staying IC - Murphey's law says in any open RP channel, griefers will think it's funny to ruin it.
-
I'm interested. Have you got anything decided for how to identify heroes that belong to the same account? I've got 2 or 3 IC heroes that would listen in on the channel, and only one of them is Hikari-Hime
-
First of all guys, I think we all need to sit back and say to ourselves "There is no one True way"
Coile - In what you're proposing, would people who chose not to become part of the coalitions for whatever reason be excluded on an OOC level?
More importantly, when you say coalition, do you mean the OC mechanic of coalitions between supergroups, or an IC agreement to help whenever called on, and a framework in place to assist that.
In the former, I think it might be a good idea, but does risk becoming "elitist" or "cliquey". Would a RP'er who wasn't a member of those groups be welcomed?
With the later, to me at least it seems that either you have a global system respected by every hero (probably maintained by Herocorps) that can be used to call for assistance, or you have individual links between groups.
The first is what I think you want, and is better IMHO as a global chat channel, while the second is the one that uses coalitions in the OOC mechanics sense, and makes sense if you consider heroes as members of their supergroup and not individuals.
Personally, I think more people running missions in and around GG time is a good thing, the statue has gotten way too crowded because everyone turns up faithfully at 9 instead of rolling in at 10 making jokes about how they nearly got scalped by Atta.
Note that this is all personal opinion, and not indicative in any way of the views of other GG members, the Guardians of Destiny, and small pink fluffy things. All rights reserved.
On an utterly unrelated note, I have a horrible feeling that you'll find that the SG's themselves will only survive it you have the majority of the players only playing one alt, and near-constantly working together. Of the two long-running IC SG's (at GG) the GoD did exactly that, and the Cirque still do a lot of missions etc together.
The one that really stands out in the graveyard is the Vigil, noteable mostly for the fact that every single OC member was still playing until about a month ago. -
What about Durham? So much nicer than Newcastle, it has a pretty castle and everything.
plus everywhere is walking distance in Durham, even if it does have too many hills and cobblestones. -
It's a very good power, but endurance heavy, you'll probably have to experiment a bit before you get used to it.
That said, with telekinesis I can solo an emp/psi on invincible, it's invaluable for locking down bosses, and a welcome addition in AV fights, where every hold helps. -
Catch-22, if I have leadership, I need stamina, and I can't afford 6 picks. I like my blasts too much.
-
I'm about to respec my Emp/Psi/Psi, mostly to get rid of scramble thoughts. I've already got every primary I want, so I need a pool pick. At the moment I've got recall friend, hover and fly, and hasten. I don't really have end issues in large teams, and soloing I'm happy with the downtime I need for my auras to come back, so I guess my pick will be mostly based on how I can get the most mez resistance.
I'm willing to sacrifice recall friend, and fly if I get another travel power in it's place. I'm uncertain about absorb pain... I don't use it much, and it's a danger, but if the tank starts crashing....
Anyway, thoughts? -
Me and J will be there, although we haven't got tickets for the actual expo yet.
Anyone know what parking is like near the hotel, trying to decide whether to drive or take the train. -
I'm going to get killed for this when I get home...
Happy Birthday!
