Quote:And that, ransim, is where I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Ten years ago, when the majority of Internet users were still using dial-up, it might have been a reasonable restriction, but in an age when over three quarters of the population (and probably 99% of the players of CoH) have broadband connections and downloading at 300-1000k a second, there are plenty of good reasons to have higher quality images on a web page.Per your edited comment, yes it is in fact a risk to the site and the people who pay for its hosting. Its very hard to control what people include on pages using a hotlink. Forcing people to upload means that each image can be reviewed to make sure it doesn't violate the hosts TOS.
I've never had any issues with decreasing my file sizes to the necessary size, and I do it without major degradation.
If you use Adobe Photoshop I'd suggest checking out the save for web/devices function under the file menu.
http://tricks-collections.com/reduce...osing-quality/
There are some good tools otherwise here you can use to do it.
You can also try including a lower res version on the UHVU page and link it to say Deviant Art or photo bucket with a full rez larger version.
There is absolutely no reason to ever include a file inline in a HTML page that is over 100 KB unless its an art website like deviantart and you've chosen to do a full view.
Let me just give you guys a snap shot from what I know. The images folder for UHVU is 4 GB of data, the database itself is 4 GB of almost all page text. I'm actually lending a hand to Kadekawa and the Admin to try an migrate the data to a shiny new server. Problem is its too much data, especially in the database, so its not playing nice with the migration tools.
So that is why the file restrictions are in place, the site is too popular for its own good.
But these are two wholly different discussions; the UHVU has a restriction in place not because its users might have trouble downloading an image, but because the server is getting along in years and tends to be cranky one moment and senile the next. Believe me, I understand this completely, which is why I'm not railing against it so much as just wishing it was different.
As for the image quality, the particular image I'm working with has a lot of transparency. I've used every trick in my fairly significant bag to bring the file size down, and have just now managed to double-posturize the image to get it to 119kb - still 19 above the file size limit. I'll keep working on it.
EDIT: I used that file resizer website, ransim, and it actually produced a larger image by 32k. *chuckles* However, I've uploaded a smaller (as in dimensions) version of the image, weighing in at only 97k. While it changes the look of the page in ways that make me a little sad, that should satisfy the issue and appease the server gods. -
Quote:Type...Hi there, everyone. ^^. As someone that usually plays on Freedom, the concept of role-playing in-game is beyond me. I've done a lot of forum role-playing and whatnot, and the idea of taking that into the game universe is actually pretty exciting. All that said, I look forward to RP'ing with you guys, and I'm excited to be here.
All that said, and considering that introduction threads with no real point might be borderline-trolling, I do have a question. I haven't yet managed to figure out how people get the text to be italicized, as opposed to being in the regular chat format.
Bob laughs, and sticks his phone in his pocket. "Nice to meet you." as opposed to [Local] Bob: *laughs, sticks phone in pocket.* "Nice to meet you."
A rather stupid question, but I can't seem to figure out how to do that. XD.
/em laughs, and sticks his phone in his pocket. "Nice to meet you."
/em, /em, /e, /emote, and ; all do the trick at the beginning of the sentence.
Oh, and welcome to Virtue! -
Use a different format. If you're using PNG or GIF images, try JPG and lower the image quality to around 60 (which should still be pretty good quality).
If you want to send the images to me, I'll see what I can do with them. -
Quote:I'm with you there. The main piece for Hero Prime's page - the cropped in-game screenshot in the upper corner - has a transparency and was HUGE. The first iteration was 250k, which is way beyond the limit. The current one is still 145k, which is probably too big, too. To drop that 105k, I posturized the image down to 32 colors, dithering the colors to maintain gradients. It's still not as small as it should be, but I can't manage to get it any smaller and keep the look decent. So I have been working pretty hard on Seri's VV page and cant seem to get her custom art down to the cap, I know the answer to this is somewhere buried deep in this thread but the gods didn't bless me with alot of patience and I could really use someones help. HELP!
If they'd enable $wgAllowExternalImages or $wgAllowExternalImagesFrom, I could host all my own images off-site. With unlimited bandwidth, I could go with images as large as I'd like. Same with the $wgRawHtml tag. *shrugs*
Editing to clarify: This is not an attack or criticism, but rather just an observation, and I understand the dangers involved in enabling any of those functions, so I don't blame them for not having them available. -
I started reworking the page for Hero Prime this afternoon. It's not done, and some of the text needs to be rewritten, but I like how it's feeling so far.
-
I managed to get into the game for a very short time, about half an hour ago, and made a change to Hero Prime's costume. When I tried to zone, however, I got a mapserver error.

Darth Prime: There is no escape! Don't make me destroy you. Luke, you do not yet realize your importance. You've only begun to discover your power! Join me, and I will complete your training! With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict, and bring order to the Isles.
Luke Shecky: [angrily] I'll never join you!
Darth Prime: If only you knew the power of the Dark Side. Statesman never told you what happened to your father.
Luke Shecky: He told me enough! He told me you killed him!
Darth Prime: No, I am your father.
Luke Shecky: [shocked] No. No! That's not true! That's impossible!
Darth Prime: Search your feelings, you know it to be true!
Luke Shecky: NOOOOOOO! NOOOOOOOO!!!
Darth Prime: Luke, you can destroy Recluse. The Fateweavers have foreseen this. It is your destiny! Join me, and together, we can rule the Rogue Isles and Paragon City as father and son! Come with me. It is the only way. -
A character I no longer play actively, Mr. Zen, is sort of my Dr. Strange/Dr. Fate/Charles Xavier character. His schtick is time manipulation, which is how I roleplayed Gravity Control and Kinetics working together. As head of The Zenvious Foundation, he led with the same kind of cryptic patience as Xavier uses to lead his school and the various groups that exist as a result of it. As the character evolved, his powers became more plot device rather than tricks of the trade, and he was eventually retired.

Not that I'm taking sides here, but not being able to get around an area where you're working counter to the established order sort of makes sense. I mean, if you're a vigilante, dishing out vigilante justice in the Rogue Isles, do you really think the villains are going to make it easy for you?
Still, I'd like to see both sides have equal access, if only for meta reasons. -
I opted for simplicity. Honestly, I was hoping to use the toga with the high collar cape, but there was too much overlap in the models, and it looked horrendous. This, then, is my entry.

If I might make a suggestion, why not try Kinetics and Electricity together? That would allow all ATs (except Masterminds) to join the group.
Blaster: Elec/Energy (RP'd as kinetic force)
Brute: Kin/Elec
Controller: Elec/Kin
Corruptor: Elec/Kin
Defender: Kin/Elec
Dominator: Elec/Energy (RP'd as kinetic force)
Scrapper: Kin/Elec
Stalker: Kin/Elec
Tanker: Kin/Elec -
My main character, Hero Prime, is a Superman homage. He's not an alien, and he's not from another world, but he is the result of a Rikti experiment, and after he escaped, managed to wind up in Kansas before eventually traveling to Paragon City to help in the supernatural struggle centered on the metropolis. He flies, shoots energy from his eyes, is fairly (but not completely) invulnerable to physical damage, and is weak to both magic and psionics (in RP, anyway). He is not, however, super strong. Instead, I gave him energy melee, which was inspired the Eradicator, who took his place as one of the four Supermen in the Death and Life of Superman series, back in the early 1990s. Nor does he have super breath, super hearing, or super eyesight. When he first moved to Paragon City, he worked as a writer for a local tech digest, but he's not a reporter, per se. He has the potential to be extremely powerful (again, in RP), but his power depends on the amount of energy he can absorb. Under normal circumstances, he's just a powerful metahuman.
Basically, I designed him as sort of a "What if Superman weren't quite so godlike" type of character. Supes is much maligned for his amazing array of powers, which is unfortunate, because his story has a lot of potential outside of his near ex machina qualities.
Do you have any homages to other characters? -
I have no idea, but if you find out, I have a character who would fit perfectly.
-
I don't see a downside here, unless you're still playing with friends on Triumph.

I've asked the mods this question twice now over the course of the last month and have had no response, so I was hoping maybe someone here might be able to give me the information I need. I know the vBulletin software is able to accept name changes for its board members, but I don't know if the people here at the City of Heroes forums have allowed us that option. If they have, it's awfully well hidden. In any case, I'd like to change my board name, if that's possible, and can't seem to find any information saying "yay" or "nay" concerning the possibility. (Heck, I would have been happy with a "no" from the mods!)
Does anyone have any definitive information about the ability to change your board name? I chose mine when coming back for a free reactivation weekend, since I was gone during the Big Board Software Switch™, and chose one quickly and without thinking about its long-term use (since my account was only active for a few days, and I never really thought I'd return to City of Heroes).
Thanks in advance. -
Okay... I haven't done much more, but I did get the base entryway mostly done. Here are a couple more shots. The first is an overview of the base. As you can see, it's mostly populated with empty or unfinished rooms. The second is the base portal itself, followed by one of the choke points you see when you move farther into the base. I did change the supergroup logo, and will be filling in all the empty spaces with base stuffs.
-
I've been away from City of Heroes for about two years now, and apparently plenty has changed when it comes to bases. Fortunately, when my wife and I came back, it was to an SG with about 45 Million Prestige, perfect for me to play around in. I waited a bit to get going, but yesterday I built my first partial room using the i13 changes to base building.
Here's what I did. The first two pictures show different views of the entry stairs. I really haven't done anything except the stairs and the meeting room they lead to. The third image is looking into the meeting room.
The fourth picture is a sidelong view through the windows of the overhead room. The fifth is looking out from the room, and the last a picture showing an overview.
There's more to come, as I have a HUGE base planned! -
Is anyone having trouble with Virtue's stability right now? It's just after 1PM Central, as I post this, and I'm getting disconnected every time I try to load a character in to the server.
-
I'd like to offer a thank you to the folks at the Lightning Strike Initiative. Great choices for finalists, even if you didn't pick mine. *grins*
Also, props to my wife, who won second place on her character Little Miss Vagary! -
I'm having trouble getting in. Wife is in, and hanging out at the D. Some of the contestants already there are pushing for the contest to go on as scheduled, including one who, when he heard about the login servers being down, said, "[People] should have taken that in to account. I did, and here I am".

Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari?

I've got two of my own I wouldn't mind seeing done, and one for my wife.
Little Zoe
Hero Prime
Vagary
Thanks again, and welcome to the boards! -
It's annoying.
I've taken to saving when I first create an image, then hitting Ctrl+S every five or ten minutes, just to make sure I don't lose anything major. I'm not really some kind of talented artist - heck, pretty much all I do well are logos and banners - so I can't imagine losing three hours of work, but doing what I do might save you that kind of trouble in the future. -
I tend to miss these kind of things by a hair. However, if you do decide to create more than these six (which is already pretty awesome of you!), I wouldn't mind seeing one of Hero Prime.
Just sayin', is all.
