  1. Zwillinger,

I would like to point out that despite my complaints about this costume set, I really did like the female costume items included in it. My complaints relate far more to an overall costume issue than to this pack specifically. It's just that this pack created a good time to talk about that issue. I love the details and textures used in the items in this pack, and thought that the overall design was really nice; it looked like a lot of extra work went into this costume set, and I feel bad if I didn't get that across initially. As a professional creative, I understand that it can be terrible to create something and then have such a harsh response from the people you made it for; I'm sure that was hard for your designer.

I just want to make clear that I agree with other community members that overall, women's outfits trend too much toward fanservice. It isn't that women's items can never be sexy, or that they should be exactly the same as the men's items, or that they should be less original, just that they shouldn't always be fanservice.

    From the feedback thread:

as a note I do not mean unisex as "the exact same thing" but very similar pieces appropriately adjusted for each model.

    Zwil,
Where as I appreciate that the message has been passed along to the art team. I want to make sure the message is heard. We are not saying we don't want special, "unique" or even "sexy" pieces, what we are saying is we want OPTIONS. Give us balance, the quote before illustrates how, and you could release them as two separate packs. I want both, and am willing to pay for both, if the quality is good ( and it usually is). I am pretty sure the men would like some "unique" pieces as well, the prince theme would give an opportunity for a long tunic, puffy sleeves, etc. I look forward to seeing this moving forward. I am super excited for the idea of a space themed pack.
    This ^

I want to be clear: my first thought upon seeing the new female costume items in this set was: "Oh, awesome! I love the details and the quality, and can't wait to combine those items with other things to make great costumes." It isn't that the new female costume items aren't great, they are; it's just that female costume items should have variety. Ideally, I would actually love it if both men and women had a huge amount of variety in gender expression as clothing. More realistically, women get away with a lot of gender expression, and men don't really. One of the great things about playing female characters is the ability to really mix and match outfits across a broad spectrum. Some female characters dress like "bar maids", others dress rough and tumble, and many dress in between. To really hit the best spot in making the audience who play female characters happy, you have to try and spread what you make across the spectrum. I am by no means interested in seeing every female costume item set made in the future be exactly like the men's set, but by the same token not every set should be just fan service. This set was the perfect chance to throw in a total "rough and tumble" women's set, and instead it was basically just not what people were expecting.
  3. Hello,

I'm trying to install the CoH Beta, and every time I run it it's giving me this error after about three or four seconds, before it can download anything:

The server does not support the necessary HTTP protocol. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) requires that the server support the Range protocol header.

I am using Windows 7, with Bitdefender Internet Security 2012, and to my knowledge, am not using any proxy servers. I use wi-fi to access the internet, and have a Netgear Wireless N router.

Both the regular CoH download and CoH Test server have installed just fine. The first time I ran my new Beta shortcut, I forgot to run it as an administrator. Since then, I've been running it as an administrator, and have completely shut off and restarted the NCsoft Launcher in between a few of the runs as an administrator. I have also tried disabling most of Bit Defenders security settings including firewall, anti-virus, anti-phishing, and blocking of port scans, as well as running it in game mode.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

  5. I'm pretty excited about the idea of making a Psychic Blast/Kinetics corrupter. I have no idea of whether that combination will work, but kinetics + barely resisted damage can't be bad.

I also might have to make some kind of ranged ninja corrupter with poison now.
  6. I've read the suggestions people posted, and tried to integrate them into some new build ideas. I've come up with two possible ideas based on the suggestions:

    Build 1:

This one keeps some of my character's personality (which is very important to my fun with her) while trying to add to her defense and keep high recharge and accuracy. I'm considering taking out a little more power later to make her feel more like the personality and creativity of the character I like playing.

This build has about half of the smashing and lethal defense of the other one, but has almost 50% smashing and lethal resistance on top of the 20ish% smashing and lethal defense it has.

  7. Thanks for all of the new advice! I'll incorporate it into a new build tonight, but I thought that I would post a few responses.

I'm glad to see that I shouldn't be raising my accuracy that much. I would really like to have more smashing and lethal defense as I do tend to die really fast as soon as anything notices me, and since I do a lot of damage, that happens a lot.

I'll think about getting rid of Psychic Mastery, but I'd really like to keep it. I'm not just adding it for the set bonus in Mass Hypnosis, I've actually had that set on her at level 50 for a long time. I like that when the team is moving fast I can sleep every other group and position myself for Fulcrum Shift while the team is moving in. Also, the Psychic Mastery set works pretty well thematically since my character is a Succubus. I would like to have Scorpion Shield, though.

Mr_Grumpums, I like a lot of your incarnate suggestions. Maybe while dropping a lot of my slotting for accuracy and recharge bonuses in favor of defense, I could recover some of that recharge slotting with Spiritual Alpha and some of the accuracy with To Hit bonuses and a little accuracy bonus slotting.

Thank you so far for the suggestions, everyone! I'll post a new build tonight sometime for more suggestions based on my changes.

This set concept focuses on fast and accurate attacking. So far, people seem to think that I should include a lot more defense in it. If you have suggestions on how to do that and whether I should, or any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them! I'm also interested in any suggestions on how I could use the Incarnate alpha slot to help balance a final build.

As you can see, I'm considering getting rid of Vengance for stealth. By combining Stealth with a stealth IO in Fly, I could sneak up on a group of enemies and fulcrum shift them as soon as the group got there rather than trying to do it once things are already going on, while not drawing as much agro. If this seems like a bad idea, I'd love to hear about it.

    Here's a Mids version:

  9. Hello,

I don't play the game often anymore, and have never really gotten into the invention system. Despite not playing often, I just recently got a character to level 50 who I completely enjoy playing after all of that time. I've decided to make my fire/kin Corrupter my character for incarnate task forces for now, but am very unfamiliar with crafted enhancements. Since I'm going to be taking her on very hard task forces and I still really enjoy playing her, I've decided that I want to make this character as strong as she can be by using Invention enhancements. I've got about 200 million to 300 million between all of my characters, and I'm probably willing to spend most of that to make this character stronger, I just have no idea of what to use. I'm also interested in critique on my character's build.

Here's my character's build right now:

    -Fire Blast-

Fire Blast: 1 acc, 3 dmg
Fire Ball: 1 acc, 3 dmg
Rain of Fire: 1 acc, 3 dmg
Fire Breath: 1 acc, 3 dmg
    Blaze: 1 acc, 3 dmg
Blazing Bolt:1 acc, 3 dmg, 2 decrease interrupt time
Aim: 3 to hit, 3 recharge
    Inferno: 3 accuracy, 3 recharge

    -Kinetics-

    Transfusion: 2 acc, 2 heal, 2 reacharge
    Siphon Power: 1 acc
Siphon Speed: 2 acc, 2 recharge
    Increase Density: 1 resistance
    Speed Boost: 1 endurance modification
    Repel: 1 recharge
Transference: 1 acc, 2 endurance modification, 3 recharge
Fulcrum Shift: 3 acc, 3 recharge

    -Inherent Fitness-

    Swift: 1 run speed
    Hurdle: 1 jump
    Health: 1 heal
    Stamina: 3 endurance modification

    -Flight-

    Fly: 1 flight
    Hover: 2 defense

    -Leadership-

    Maneuvers: 2 defense
    Tactics: 3 to hit
Vengeance: 2 defense, 2 to hit

    -Psychic Mastery-

    Dominate: 2 acc, 2 hold, 2 recharge
Mass Hypnosis: 3 recharge, 1 acc
    Mind Over Body: 3 resistance

I'm willing to respec, and I'm interested in build suggestions. I'm also very interested in any advice people can give me on which IO sets to buy and how to use them the best way I can.

Thanks in advance for the advice!
  10. Hello,

I'm not a regular poster on this forum, but I have played CoH off and on since it came out. Today I went to ask a question on the forums, and noticed that I was logged out. I entered my information to log in and noticed that I hadn't been logged in. after I tried twice more, I went out to Google and found the forums again. Once the page loaded, I realized I was already logged in. I went back and forth a few times, and realized that the site I had been trying to log into was "boards.coh.com" but that I had only been able to log into "boards.cityofheroes.com". Is this a phishing scam, or just some kind of misconception? Should I be concerned about my account?

I've been an armchair game industry analyst fir years now and its obvious not only to me but pretty much everyone else.

Now, that being said, they don't have to screw us to make more money with this approach. Making money and screwing the customer are not the same.
While I think that this system could be used either to make more money responsibly, or to make more money by taking advantage of their customers, I personally don't feel like we even need to get into whether they're unscrupulous enough to do the latter. Years and years ago when Cryptic Studios was still involved with City of Heroes, I think that the way the developers treated the community came pretty close to killing the game and really damaged community relations. My impression has been that since NCsoft took full control of development they've spent years trying to rebuild that trust. I think the developers learned their lesson back then. Maybe they burn the community sometimes, but I think they learned very well back then that burning the community more than a little isn't worth it. I don't think it matters whether it would be good for them (or easy) in the short run for them to abuse this system; I think they know that it wouldn't be worth it in the long run. I trust by how I've seen them run the game since the whole fiasco with Statesman that they won't do something major to undermine their relationship with the player base.
  12. This may have already been covered or this may be the wrong place to ask, but how will rewards earned as a VIP player transfer if you change to a free account? For example: I have a subscription now which will become a VIP account. if 3 months after CoH Freedom comes out I change to a free account, will I lose access to ATs, Powersets, or other content I had access to as a VIP and as a subscribing player? If I switch from a VIP account to a free account, but two patches have been released since CoH Freedom was released, do I loose content from those patches and have to buy it again? If someone starts with a free account, then becomes a VIP, then goes back to a free account, do they get to keep access to features released in patches from when they were a VIP, but not released before they were a VIP? Do people becoming VIPs after starting with free accounts get access to content that pre-dates CoH Freedom, and then loose it again when if they switch to free accounts?

    *takes a deep breath*

Also, is it possible to upgrade a VIP account in preparation for it becoming a free account? Let's say I have a fantastic job which is paying me boat loads of money, but I'm afraid that at some point I won't have that fantastic job and won't be able to pay for a VIP account. Can I start buying access to ATs, powersets, mission content, and costume items that I currently have access to as a VIP player and then have them already unlocked for me once I switch to a free account for the first time without paying for them again? How many slots can we unlock for our free accounts? Do slots we unlocked during previous systems exceed that number? Do slots we got as veteran rewards exceed the maximum number of slots we can have on free accounts through slot purchase?

What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?
  13. Does the costume we enter with need to be safari/jungle related or just animal related? I have this great character who is a fish monster from far out in the ocean I'd love to be able to enter.

Also, will you be judging based on bios too?
  14. what I would like to see in this pack a lot more than full on animal heads would be an extension to face scaling. If you could extend the face out into a muzzle or use a different head that was less animal and more human, I would like that very much. Also, some additional skins that look like furs would be fun.

I would like to point out (although I have a feeling that it will be like shouting into a void) that there's really no reason to object more to people making furry characters than any other kind of character. I know lots of furries who are both creative and not hyper-sexual. I myself have made at least one anthropomorphic character using the mutant pack. She's a shark like fish monster captured from far out in the ocean. She has neural-toxins that she spits on people (customized mind control) and poison barbs (spines). I would love to be able to extend her face to make it look more shark like.

I'm looking forward to this pack! I hope they do it well.
  15. I'm also curious about how you define Halloween themed costumes. I have a sea monster and a succubus. Would either of those qualify?
  16. So as an update, I just installed the newest drivers for my graphics card, ran CoH and disabled particle physics in my options.

When I restarted my computer it was able to get all the way into windows without my waiting 15 minutes. When I ran CoH, it ran for a few minutes before the graphics card shut down from trying to run CoH. I'm going to try the fix someone posted in this topic section to see if I can get it to stop doing that next.
  17. Ever since I installed windows 7, my computer won't run CoH correctly. For a while, I had problem where whenever I started CoH my screen would just flash really fast until I turned the game off. I found a third party driver for my graphics card which solved that problem, but still whenever I log into CoH my whole computer will shut itself off after about 5-15 minutes of running the game even if all I'm doing is just standing around in atlas park.

There are a few important things to note. Firstly, my computer had major problems shortly after I installed windows 7. I had to replace the motherboard, the power supply and the cpu fan. This could be related to these problems.

Secondly, when I turn my computer off I can't really get it to turn back on very well. It tries to check the hard drive each time, but doesn't find anything. Even if it gets through the hard drive check the computer will just turn itself off before it gets all the way into windows 7. If I keep trying to turn the computer on again, it will get severe artifacting on the screen and still not make it to windows 7. If I turn the computer off for about 15 minutes and then try, it can turn all the way on.

Here are some basic specs of my computer:

    OS: Windows 7
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.40GHz 2.40GHz
    Ram: 4.00 GB
    System Type: 64-bit Operating System
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series
Extra PCI Cards: AGEIA PhysX 100 Series PCI Card

The graphics card is running third party drivers to be able to not have a flashing screen when CoH runs. My sister's boyfriend tells me that the PhysX card's fan is dying/dead which could be part of the problem too.

    Any suggestions would be welcome!

    Thanks
  18. Well I'm not really implying that it would be a new kind of sprint. I'm also a little overwhelmed by the number of sprints I have and don't really use them after a certain level. I'm suggesting it as something more like the costume change emotes. It would just be something that replaces an older animation.

Also, I know that ninja run is an un-enhancable power. I just noticed that when people in ninja costumes use it it lends a lot of authenticity to their theme. I think that being able to sort of "flavor" your basic movement animations would add a small new dimension to character customization.

I suggested it as a paid item because I know the devs are very very busy. Also as a programmer myself I know that sometimes even when you see something you could do to improve your client experience, if you can't explain to the people in charge why it's a good idea to add this improvement it won't happen.

I'd love to see this implemented for free and if they'd be willing to do it under those specs I'd much prefer it. I haven't bought any of the booster packs yet either even though I want to. I just know that sometimes when you try to get an idea like this accepted you have to make a case for how it benefits the people who are making it. Suggesting it as a paid item gives them something to take to their bosses and go "see, if we do this it gives us something too."
  19. It seems to me that since Ninja Run came out people are seeing more and more need for a CO style ability to modify the way our travel powers animate. I see a need for something similar. I think the way this idea could be implemented would benefit both the players and NcSoft.

I think the developers could impliment "personality packs" which would be similar to the super booster packs. Each pack could contain 5-10 character "personalities".

An example of one personality might be a zombie personality. The zombie personality could contain a zombie walk, a zombie run and a zombie stand idle pose. The idea would be that none of these would be triggered by emotes, they would just happen in place of the character's current walk/run/stand animations.

If you think about it, it doesn't make a lot of sense for a woman who cuts people up with a rusty blade to run like she's late for cheerleading practice or a small framed man who uses psychic power to run like a confident bodybuilder.

I'm planning a character who isn't a hero, but rather a sleep walker who just happens to save people with her dreams. I'd love to have that heroine stumble and shuffle around like she's not aware of her surroundings instead of appearing totally alert.

I think this presents an opportunity both for the creative aspect of city of heroes to deepen even further and for NcSoft to easily make more money at little developing expense.

I hope it can be considered.
  20. I liked this guide a lot! One thing I would say though is that sometimes I'll use a lot of these tips but in the form of self expression in addition to character expression, so my costume reflects how I feel or think combined with representing my character. Even though this can result in repatiative costumes I find it helps me enjoy my characters more.

I think something you should consider adding is a critique topic. You have very good design, and for those of us who like to look our best in game it would be fun to have a place where we could get advice and discuss costumes.

I like the guide though! I hope it ends up in the guide to guides.
