Quote:Oy, the main hyperbole is how you reacted to this. I hardly made an emotional or unfounded statement to be responded to like this. In practical terms, 30 feet is quite close. The shortest range blasts, the "heavy" blasts from blast sets are 40 feet (as well as some AOEs), and Ranged users complain about how close that is: people often prefer to hang back farther unless they're on a melee character.'right on top of you'!? Seriously?
If you're going to make a hyperbole, at least admit it. Hell, Dispersion Field is *25ft* and you don't hear complaints that you have to be *right on top of eachother*. Oh, and Footstomp is only *15ft* yet it alone makes SS the mother of all AoE melee sets? Must be a pain needing everything be *right on top of eachother* to get it to work...
It's easy for Stalkers to move about about and get out of range of 30 feet from their teammates, even when they are fighting the same mob. Stalkers should receive their buff in those situations, and not have to wonder how far they're getting away from their teammates.
And sheesh, it's not like I was asking for much, here. I asked to extend the range on it so that a Stalker will usually get the buff that they're supposed to on a team. With 30 feet, you can be in the same room or hallway as your teammates and not get this critical hit buff. 60-90 feet wouldn't make it so you could run off and do a mission on your own with the buff operative, but would make sure that this buff is working when you are on a team and working with them.
Quote:Too close to what? Scrappers are a damage AT too. And Blasters. That's their primary role.
That said, I get what other people were saying about the greater AOE capability of Scrappers balancing that out, so it might not be too much to get them to the same base damage.
Still, I'd rather something like criticals or debuffs were added to Stalkers so they are different from Scrappers. Adding to their base damage seems the least interesting of the buff suggestions. *shrugs* Just my own two cents.
Yup, though you can refresh the duration. However, this can be set on multiple targets as well. It's a nice buff for Tankers while soloing and while on a team. -
Quote:I'd never be mean and call you an idiot, but you have said things like Energy is subpar for damage and doesn't do AOE... when it's a middle of the road blast set. In other words, there are sets that are weaker and stronger than it for ST and AOE damage, which is a decent place for it to be, especially since you get so much mitigation from knockback (you really do get a lot of mitigation... my En/En Blaster is safer and easier to play than most of my other Blasters).Wow!! my feelings are hurt lol . why do i have to be all kinds of idiots just cuz i want a damage buff( im looking at you memphis bill ! )
Anyway, such statements mean you don't know as much about the set. I think people would be nicer if you had come in and asked about what is good about Energy Blast, rather than suggesting it needs buffs when you don't quite know the set.
I think those that like Energy Blast are a bit more defensive than needed, as there have been some unreasonable types that kick people for doing knockback, which is just silly. Energy is a good set and in line with all the others. If you like the look and the feel of knocking guys about and doing good damage, run with it. -
Quote:Hmmm, I like this as well. Would still want the duration upped so form-shifting doesn't make the power less good, though. But perhaps you meant it should be 20 seconds for duration like Fiery Embrace? Sorry if you did.Why not give Buildup the Fiery Embrace treatment, but with Energy damage?
It's a nice all-around buff that doesn't have to tweak every single power.
I don't think doing this would make Fiery Embrace any less unique, either. Peacebringers could use some fun mechanics like this to keep them in line with Warshades, too. -
Quote:Explosive Blast is never, except in some very few cases, going to knock everything back that it hits (there are plenty of times where Torrent followed by Blast doesn't knock anything back for my En Blaster). And anything that is knocked back isn't hitting you anymore, so it shouldn't matter if it's out of your aura.I'm talking specifically about the sort of people who will do something like fire off Explosive Blast at a target that's right by the Tanker/Scrapper/Brute/whatever, knocking all the mobs out of the radius of their survivability aura (RttC, Invincibility, what have you).
And I say this as someone who plays a lot of melee, WP and Invuln Tanks among them. As long as the stuff is getting defeated, it's not a big deal. I switch targets and move on.
Someone with knockback in their powers should try to work with their teammates, of course. I try to be careful on that Energy blaster when paired win an Elec Control user, for instance (though a lot of times even then, the AOE damage and KB is needed/helps). I've cut back on KB when asked, like my AR Blaster's M80 attack followed by Full Auto. Even though it hurt the team more, as we weren't dropping mobs as fast and I was getting a lot more return fire. I figured that was okay to keep the team happy, just as long as I wasn't dying.
The problem was still with perspectives from certain other people.
Quote:While I like KB and the Energy blast set, I wouldn't mind a buff to the set
A 75% chance of KB for both torrent and explosive (rather than the 60/50% we have now), a slight boost in Burst's range (50-60ft), a bit of a buff to Push's damage (close to Power Bolt) with a speedier animation. I'd like that...
I dunno, I might not mind more of a chance for KB, but they fire pretty often now, and having it a little lower might make it better for cranky teammates, too. -
Quote:Well, keep in mind that I was joking about all that earlier. Still, Olive Garden seemed pretty great to me when I was in high school... I pretty much only got to go there on my birthdays (this was in the 90s for me). I certainly never could take dates there, as it was even more difficult to pay for than Perkins or Wendy's.Yeah, but when you were in high school would you have gone as insane as Santanna did over a gift certificate for a chain restaurant? I wouldn't have.
For Santana, I don't know. She certainly prioritizes things somewhat oddly, or differently, than some. For her, going to a more upscale restaurant than fast food might represent something bigger and better for her. I'm assuming they're going to make her character a little deeper at some point, and I could see parallels between her obsession with Breadsticks and her usual fast food relationship to sex. She's wanting something more somewhere.
Is the connection a little goofy? Perhaps, but it's in step with the goofy show it's on, and really... humans can be silly like that. We're lovable and stupid at the same time. -
Quote:*eyes narrow*Just watched this today. I really felt sad for Brittany.
Sam and Quinn make a cute couple. I think Sam is a closet geek/nerd.
I wish I could remember a time when a gift certificate for two at a chain restaurant would make me that excited in high school. Yea it's a step up from fast food but really now.
As someone who dearly enjoys going to Olive Garden with his wife (which is my closest guess as to what Breadsticks is modeled after), I resent these statements!
I did like how they got excited about it, and considering I knew it was a chain restaurant, it is pretty funny. Even if I still love Olive Garden!
My wife and I watched this one out of sync when we tried to watch Brittany, Brittney (or however they're spelled). Stupid Fox's website pulled up the wrong one. Anyway, we were both not very happy with the first episode of the season, as it just felt off. This one felt much better to us... the duets reminded me of some of the stronger musical numbers from Season 1, and I enjoyed a lot of them.
Still had some questionable emotional notes (like Arty being upset about losing his virginity, but not seeming to protest much when it happened. Yes, I know he's a teenage guy, but there was a bit too much of a switcharound: would have made more sense if Brittney had needed to persuade a little more), but it was still pretty good. I'm distracted by Sam's mammoth lips, but I can certainly understand why Quinn likes him. And yes, Brittney's pushing of the meatball was endearing, hilarious, and sad.
Brittany/Brittney wasn't as good (partially because I hate Brittany Spears), but I felt the "theme" of that episode worked better than the Madonna episode of season 1.5. Sure, John Stamos has some weird anaesthetic in his office, but that worked in with the humor of the bit.
Still think it's criminal that there has been no seen interaction between Finn and Quinn after their breakup. Quinn testing Finn for Rachel (and maybe herself some) isn't enough. I know they have a lot of characters and storylines to juggle, but it still bugs me.
*added*
I also liked Kurt getting called out on some of his behavior. Rachel has been plenty, so Kurt needs it as well. This episode made up for that screwed up confrontation in 1.5 as well. -
Hasn't this been greenlit before, or was that just all "we're kind of probably/maybe/sort of working on it?"
Anyway, I like hearing that Peter Jackson is directing for sure. I think the LOTR books are much better than the movie trilogy, but they did manage to get a large amount of the movies right. A few things bug me (mostly the elves, Faramir, and Denethor), but for a book to movie translation, they're quite good and I like rewatching them.
I'm still not keen on this being two movies long and being in 3D. I can't see 3D adding much of anything to the experience, and I'm not sure how that will pan out for home viewing. And to reiterate, still don't see a need for two movies, either.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that people who did it mostly right three times before can do it again. I feel reasonably sure that Smaug and all the settings will look great, considering Jackson will probably have many of the same people working for him again: biggest worry is how the story is worked out, and how the characters feel in the translation. -
Quote:Most of the requests for a higher HP cap are because Stalker's base HP was increased a few issues back, but not their max, so that hurts those sets that are supposed to get more from having powers that increase their HP. That's the main reason I ask for it. Having more HP is a benefit for any AT, and every powerset should be able get something from it equally.I dont see the point of asking for more health. Stalkers are meant to be squishie, it adds to the feel of the AT. Furthermore whatever 1 shots you at 1600 health will still most likely 1 shot you at 2000 health. I never really had issues with survivablity once they fixed defense in issue 7. As for as the resistance well thats just lol resistance sets. Something should have been done to compensate them many issues ago because positional defense has always been the way to go on a stalker.
For me, I think any changes should keep Stalkers feeling like Stalkers, and much of my suggestions involve following up on the old changes. So:
-increase the Stalker HP cap to match their earlier base boost
-remove or at least triple the "leash" on Stalker's crit boost from teammates, so it's more likely to happen when a team is spread around a little. Thirty feet means they're practically on top of you, which isn't going to happen much. I can understand not wanting to remove it entirely, but make it more usable.
-Make the debuff from a successful Assassin's Strike automatic, increasing the desire to use it as an opener solo or on teams (but not necessarily always the best).
-Make their Build Up 100% damage
I kind of get where requests for higher damage are coming from, but I wonder if upping the reliability of team criticals and Assassin's Strike isn't enough. At some point, Stalkers are going to get too close to Scrappers, or better. -
*cough*Fire Mastery*cough*
Pick up a hold for annoying things like Sappers or Tarantula Queens that eat defense for breakfast. Decent ranged ST power and AOE power, and a debuff power. The debuff numbers on Melt Armor are not huge, but the debuff lasts a long time (40 seconds for both the defense and res debuff) and can stack with Bruising.
To be honest, though, there are a variety of things that can work for you. For APPs, though I usually go with whatever fits my character thematically, as that is my preference (especially since we can't customize APPs yet). After that, I choose the one that is going to boost my character the most. -
Yes, context is king. Gaussian's has decent bonuses and I get a lot out of it when I slot it. But depending on what you are aiming for, it's not the best set (or the most efficient). Whenever you are making a build, you have to take into account your end goal, and what sets and amount of slots will get you farthest.
-
Yeah... Energy is middle of the road for AOE and ST damage. Quite a good set, and as I level my En/En Blaster, I'm finding it more easy and fun than my other Blasters, and I've enjoyed playing them all. The KB makes it quite safe, and you're able to do a lot in any situation.
If you have a set that has KB, you just have to run with it in a way that helps your team. Lot of strategies for that, but the main one is just to take out whatever you knockback. Not hard to do with it, either. Of course, some people are more touchy about stuff getting knocked back than they should be, and that's part of the problem. -
Yeah, I would recommend always taking the first two tier attacks from a Blaster primary. Too darn useful to skip.
-
*sighs* Sunset Samurai is shut out by... a cockroach this year? It was a cow last year! What do all these animal themed people have that he doesn't? *sniff*
Glad you had a good turnout, MP. Seemed like you had the process set up nicely, too. -
Yeah, that happened with me the first time around, as my inbox reverted to a time when I had mailed myself the couple purples I have. I figured I might as well grab them, and support didn't say anything, but I wouldn't count on it always happening.
-
Just a little word to the wise and those who send lots of things via the in-game e-mail. Do not keep things in your inbox during a server maintenance. I have had things disappear during maintenance twice since GR went live. Support has been nice and given them back to me, but it's a hassle you don't want to deal with (you have to let them know when you sent the stuff, roughly, and on what character).
-
Personally, I have Touch of the Nictus 5-slotted in Dark Regeneration for that added 2.25 endurance bonus. Maybe I'll end up using DR more often and wishing for a little more end reduction in there from a Golgi or something else, but it seems like that bonus would be nice to have all of the time, rather than having some more end reduction in DR.
Also, I'm hoping all my defense bonuses, etc., will keep me from needing to use it too often (or that I can at least fire it off in a big mob and let that Theft of Essence proc fire off more often).
Sounds like I should use the extra slot inherent Fitness is going to give me (by plunking one of my LotG +recharges in a defense pool power) to put a Performance Shifter +end in to Stamina or Physical Perfection. I like that effect, but oy, I do not like the look of how costly this build is going to be (mostly in merits, as some things just aren't worth waiting weeks for it to drop on the market: I got my Theft of Essence proc with 2 hero merits so I could have it when this guy exemps down). Oh well, he's fun to play.
Oddly enough, the mobs that really make me irate are still void hunters. I like going after them no matter what AT I'm on, as an enemy group that specifically hunts certain heroes just gets my dander up. Sappers are just after them, though, I guess. Heh. -
Eh, less grumpy on a Friday night than I was on a Friday morning with a day of grading and not enough sleep before me.
Anyway, the major stick in my craw right now is one of misconception: that misconception being that "X archetype is better than any other archetype in CoX." I hate this misconception, as all of the ATs are on a reasonably even keel (I mentioned Stalkers, as that seems to be the one universal AT that many agree could use some tweaks to keep it in par with the other melee ATs: Castle also indicated he wanted to adjust them but didn't have time to do so before GR).
So, really, the only thing people should think about is the style in which they want to get things done in. All of the ATs offer different approaches to getting the job done. There are different flavors of support, damage, and aggro management between several ATs, too, which is even better.
The debates we saw for months before GR about how "X AT will replace Y AT," and in any continued debates (like in that linked thread that I hate and Another Fan likes) arise from other difficulties. People have a tendency to forget that the basic difficulty setting of the game is x0/+0, and that you can advance plenty well doing missions at that setting. And all ATs can handle that.
And really, most ATs can surpass that on SOs. When you throw in IOs, things get more complicated, of course, but luckily, the devs didn't choose to make the game more difficult because of IOs. Though they can't ignore what kind of changes they cause, either. It doesn't change any AT being able to ratchet up the difficulty level and do more on their own (and on a team) depending on their build and skill level.
Anyway, I'm getting carried away. All those debates about one AT superseding another are pretty much null and void. The ATs aren't so far apart that there are real, substantial disparities, even with one that is more universally agreed upon like Stalkers (and there are plenty like me that still like them and think they add something to a team). People should play what they want to play, and CoX is one of those few MMOs out there that allows you to do so.
That's what set me off earlier, as that other thread and some posts continue to suggest to new players that they should choose an AT because of some real performance difference, when there isn't a huge one. Again, people should play what they want, and CoX allows them that opportunity: no one should ruin that.
Sure, some powerset combos and builds can make for some crazy DPS or take on multiple AVs, but that's hardly close to baseline performance, or what most people need to do to play the game and have fun. There's plenty of room for min/maxxers and casual players in CoX... which is again, people playing what they want. You go for the style of play you prefer. -
Yeah, what's up with that? What will Ham do if he doesn't have a Stalker to pick on in Isos?
Have fun. Little breaks help me enjoy the game more when I come back, and I19 sounds like it should be pretty fun. -
Quote:Did you have Nova form, and did you slot those attacks up? If you focus on the Nova powers once you get them, getting to 22 is pretty easy, just like it is for Blasters. Go in, blow everything up fast, and get out. Your targeted AOE attacks is a good opener, as it has a chance to knock your targets back and keep them from firing back.Yeah, but I wasn't going to make my friends tag along with my crappy Warshade to get her to level 22 when I could have brought my Emp Defender that I only play when they're blueside instead.
I couldn't solo the Warshade to 22, and the investment wasn't worth my team's time.
It's really easy to feel your Kheldian isn't doing so hot if you spread out your slots too much (for my tri-form Peacebringer, I slotted up Nova form, then Dwarf, and filled in a few human powers as I could leveling up before focusing on that). Focus on getting one form to a good spot, then move on. Nova is the best place to start, even if you're going to focus on human or dwarf form later.
For the OP, I don't know... most ATs in CoX can solo pretty well, especially those from CoV. Most of those mentioned so far in this thread don't surprise me too much. -
No, that really is the problem. Blasters are not numerically so on the edge as Stalkers are, and it's ridiculous that anyone would say Stalkers aren't worth it anyway.
At best, all you have pointed out in that other thread is that a few powerset combinations can do a lot of damage too, like that somehow obviates the entire Blaster AT or makes them worthless. When plenty of people still like playing them, still do play them, and are hardly having issues in playing the game well.
Basically, you have set up a situation where you are artificially creating a large performance bias between ATs, when the only bias should be what a player has fun with (and that is what CoX has). Way to try and ruin one of the best aspects of City of Heroes. Seriously, it's disgusting.
Sorry for being annoyed, but... I have argued for balance many times when it is needed, even when I don't play an AT or powerset. I was all for the Blaster changes many issues back, as the AT really did need it then.
Any suggestion that Blasters are way out of whack now or that another AT fits the bill much better (when the only real requirement is what you like to play for) is a bad thing.
As for this statement " It sounds like he got steered to something much better for a new player." That's hogwash, and you should know it. The only best thing for any player, new or old, is to play something they like. Some people enjoy playing support, some don't. And really, most of the support classes take awhile to mature and work well. You can do what a Blaster does from 1-50, easily.
I have an Ice/Storm Corruptor that I quite like, but he's still rather slow and not all that powerful in the 20s. I know how that's going to open up and be great, looking at the final build I have for him in mid's (and knowing how Storm works at higher levels from my Earth/Storm Controller), but he's not there yet.
The more straight up ATs are a bit easier for getting used to City of Heroes. Really, Blasters, Brutes, and Scrappers are probably the best there. I'd still steer people into support ATs if that's the concept they like best for their character, though. -
Quote:I'll play around with it to see if I like it. I'm going more for a water effect, so I was playing with different shades of blue. For some reason, I don't know that I have tried adding green to the effects in there at all, but it would make sense to give it a go.If you want a truly nifty ocean effect, make Shadow Cloak's primary color a faded, desaturated green and the secondary color a deep, dark blue.
I found the don't obscure or tint option (or however it's phrased) for Cloak of Darkness, so that's good so far.
Anyone know the stats on when the Performance Shifter +end proc is better to choose than just an end mod in Stamina? I recall someone saying that until you have Stamina to the ED cap for End Mod, that's the better choice (or if you only have 3 slots, going for end mod with all those is a better choice). Just wondering. I'm quite sure that it would be better than one end mod slot in Physical Perfection, though. With inherent Fitness, I'll have an extra slot to play around with, so I'll put it where it would help most (maybe 3 slot Stamina for end mod, and use one of my 2 slots in Physical perfection for a Performance Shifter.
OR, I could add in a Numina's Unique to go with my Miracle +end in Health. Not sure if that's better. Boy, Dark Armor is reminding me of my Kheldian builds: trying to squeeze the utmost out of every little slot. -
The double agent stuff is a bit too confusing, in my mind, and not set up well in game. They tell you can do it, but the steps to do it are less than obvious. And one time when I tried to get new mission objectives from Calvin Scott (for a Loyalist mission), he just kept talking to me about seeing a couple of Resistance contacts that I hadn't gone to yet.
Maybe I needed to go to them first and he would have offered me the mission, but it's an unnecessary and further confusing hoop to the process. -
Quote:Seriously? Okay, for that, if nothing else, that thread needs to be scorched from the face of this earth. If you want to play a Corruptor because you find it fun, that's fine, but don't do it because of some hogwash about some AT outplaying another. The closest thing CoX has to an AT falling behind the others in competition are Stalkers, and they're still pretty borderline in that regard.hey guys thanks for the input but I rolled a Corr instead after reading this thread http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=238663
from there it seems to me blasters play 2nd fiddle to scraps, doms, brutes etc. and as a corr at least I get some support powers to mess around with when my dps gets overshadowed.
Don't want my word for it? Arcanaville, the resident poster and mathematical analyst extroadinaire here on the forums stated that she didn't even see a reason to post in that thread you cited (ie, it wasn't worth noting). And here's a quote from BillZ on AT disparity in CoX. "In the end, all of these statements are completely useless beyond showing that no AT is obsolete as long as people continue playing them. Including stalkers."
Both are taken from a thread in the AT discussion section of the forums.
There are certainly powersets that need tweaking in CoX, but the ATs are all in pretty healthy relation to how effective they are. Play the AT you want.
If you want a decent support toon that can do damage, roll a Corruptor. If you just want to revel in blowing stuff up while being on the screaming edge, be a Blaster. That's all there is to it: don't let anyone else try to sully your fun by convincing you that the ATs aren't on a pretty even keel. -
Yeah... I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but that is hilarious.
I teach writing, and one of the biggest things I have to show my students is to think about what their words are saying. That statement is up there with saying "No offense, but..." when you're trying to mend fences. That statement almost always presages an offensive passage.
Anyway, the earlier passage has been clarified, and let's move on to Blaster combos that "melts face at end game," as that's much more fun. -
Penny, you came up with this (and all those other names), AND you play an MMO. I hope your husband is a geek and appreciates how cool that is. My wife was geekish when we got married, and I have furthered her on the path of geekdom. Mwahaha. Too funny.
With all the comment spam in here, the mods could ban half of Victory if they so chose!
