I'm having some intra-departmental drama that I'm having to deal with around final grading (and students whining/begging about those grades). Too much fun, so I feel your pain.

Quote:We're talking 2000/2001 here, so no. It started out with a 3.2 GB hard drive, but it kept having issues, so I replaced it with said 10 GB drive. I had a computer inclined friend that joked about charging me for finding that "deal" at the time (and it was a deal). I laughed that bit of stupidity off, but I do remember it.It's the Geek in me, but in the long long ago with a used compaq, don't you mean 10 megabytes?
Now, I'm sure there were Compaqs with that much at some point, but not the on I bought. I was able to play Shogun: Total War on the one I bought, which was somewhat beefy for the time. -
Depending on where you go, there are still crossovers between more native beliefs and creativity. Looking into history, things like the Virgin of Guadalupe are a little... fishy (as in being a local belief having a lot of hold with Christians in the area).
There have also been Christians that have been rather taken with ideas in Norse myth (the writer or editor of Beowulf, CS Lewis, and Tolkien among them), but no, Christian beliefs are not merged with Norse beliefs. Not sure where Durakken is getting that from, but I have never heard it in any Protestant or Catholic writings. At all. In the cases of the above people, they actually struggled with how intrigued they were by Norse beliefs, since much of them did not sync up with Christianity.
Not even sure what to do with this line, either. "Most people don't believe 99% of what the canon of their religion says." If you don't believe in 99% of a religion, you're not a part of it. Going by that, I must be a hardcore Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. Heck, I could even believe in Norse or Greek myth. 99% means you hardly agree with anything the religion stands for.
Anyway, I do think Norse myth is quite interesting. It's strikingly different from a lot of other mythologies, and I always found the idea of Ragnarok to be startling in contrast with Greek myths. I'm hoping to check out the movie this week, if work can stop getting in the way of things. -
Self-publishing, frankly, means squat. Anyone can do it if you're willing to pony up the cash, and not many people are probably going to notice it even then. As others have noted, there is a lot of dreck out there, and you don't necessarily have to edit your stuff much. Just writing a novel for NaNoWriMo might be a fun challenge, but it doesn't mean you have a good book on your hands, or that you don't need to edit it like crazy to make it decent.
Once you do have a decent book, you MIGHT get lucky and gain a following, but the odds are low... maybe/probably lower than having an agent and a publisher like your stuff enough to publish it. The same issues occur for blogging, webcomics, webvideos, etc. Most people that are well known for it started out with it early on, and now there are so many things out there to look at being found is might difficult.
Like it or not, publishing houses, etc., are around because they have been able to find the decent stuff more often than not, and don't let out too much of the dreck. Are they perfect? Can they be evil? You bet.
But I still want them to publish my stuff, even if the few literary magazines I have sent stuff to have published some stuff I don't care for instead.I'm not so stupid to think that publishers know everything, but I also am not so delusional to think that self-publishing means anything, either.

Quote:If you like a decent drama, Parenthood is actually quite good. Don't be thrown off by the commercials... they tend to sometimes be a little heavy handed. The acting and writing is quite solid, and the emotions for it are genuine. I'm not a huge TV watcher, but this show has actually been one I try to watch.Well, Chuck is about the only thing on NBC now!
Harry's Law is good, but if Criminal Minds stays on it's current day and time, I figure it will win out (at least for me).
Definitely not for you if you're in the mood for Chuck or something light, but it's pretty good. -
The times certainly are a-changing.
We had a TI Computer when I was quite young, though it was more of a console: it was a keyboard with the processing stuff inside, and you hooked it up to a TV. We mostly used it for games. Then we had a Macintosh that I did all my high school papers on... most gaming was on our Super Nintendo then.
First computer I had was a used Compaq I bought from a company I was working at for the summer. Ended up having to get a HD for it soon after that was about $100 for 10 GB HD. I paid significantly less than that a couple of years ago for a drive that had... 60x more storage? Insanity. I also thought it was insane when I was able to get 4 GB so cheaply for my current rig two years ago, yet now it's pretty much thought of as required.
*sighs* I can appreciate how fast things are growing, but I still hate that PC games continue to follow the trend of "higher requirements=better games." The bar gets moved a little too quickly, and not for a whole lot of gain, to my mind. -
Quote:Keep in mind all those add ons could be thrown onto a set with more ST damage, and they'd be doing even better with ST damage. It sounds like you've rounded things out as well as you can, but Electric is more heavily slanted to AOE no matter how you look at it. Base numbers are what they are.The ST damage on my E^3 scrapper is now much MUCH better with the addition of the musculative alpha, reactive interface proc, and Mako's bite damage procs. I would almost go as far as saying the ST damage surpasses other sets now. The attacks are very fast activating and have low cooldowns which yields more chances for damage procs to go off. Its also easy to stack the reactive proc's DoT and -res. Charged brawl-> chain induction -> charged brawl -> havok punch and repeat. Thunderstrike I only use for AoE.
Musculative alpha is also nice for the +end mod.
But like I said, it's a fun set. No worries. -
Cool idea. Going to need to miss this since I will be gone for my anniversary weekend. Definitely a higher priority.
*added*
Ha, just saw Ryxx's addition. Gratz, buddy. Good time of the year to get married: three day weekend for your anniversary! Woot! -
Holy carp... I'm in for Wednesday. My E^3 Blaster loves this idea.

Quote:Wait, what? You didn't like the "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal" line? That ones... classic! Or did you mean the opposite?I was digging the pilot up until Wash got to the line, "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" And then I was full steam ahead. I was terribly disappointed by the train robbery episode, but I gave it another chance and was very glad I did.
The Train Robbery episode is okayish, but I agree it's not the best. It just had more of the elements that made the series good: seriousness with some good humor. Like I said, things really got their legs in Shindig for me. -
Yeah, that was pretty darn hilarious. Made me smile as well.
For SyFy's response, are they only counting people watching the TV at the time of the show's airing (not anything later)? Just curious, as I know I often pick up things later, and in the case of Stargate SG-1, I watched that puppy exclusively on DVD via NBC reruns, Netflix checkouts, and then buying the whole series on disc. If they're only counting ratings of the first viewing, that does discount a lot.
I dunno, I do have a lot of bias against all these specialty Cable networks becoming less special (sure the History Channel could jokingly be called the "Nazi Channel" for all their WWII stuff, but at least it used to have... history, rather than some drivel about guys selling stuff at a pawn shop). Still, it seems like niche networks are going to lose a lot when they try to be like the other guys. I check out The History Channel or Sci-Fi because of that unique content: I can watch wrasslin' or reality TV on a lot of other channels already.
I think I'd also be more okay with the SG:U stuff if they seemed to have more plans in place for other sci-fi shows, but that seems iffy, from the direction they are going. -
Quote:Elec is definitely better for AOE than ST damage. I have an E^3 Brute that does better against masses of mobs rather than bosses or EBs. Still a fun and thematic combo.I can relate, I only like playing characters that have some kind of theme going.
I'm having a blast on my elec/elec/mu scrapper. I feel it has less burst damage than some other primary's but the DPS is amazing. Especially with the Reactive proc and build up. AoE is fantastic through ball lightning, thunder strike, lighting field, and lightning rod. Elec armor does a great job of keeping me alive through resists. I also can keep going mob after mob with power sink and the +recharge +spd passive stacked with IOs. Mob's usually cannot last after a well placed power sink and -end from lightning field.
I had a katana/SR four years ago I really enjoyed too. *shrug*
I think a fire/fire/fire scrapper would be a lot of fun but definitely more of a team based dps. -
Quote:I have started a Claws/Invuln recently that I am finding quite fun. Praetoria was a breeze, though more exotic damage when you run into it can be a problem at those levels (before you have much defense to work with, or any of your low resist powers to those).
Claws/Inv or WP (scrapper or Brute) I have a level 20 claws/inv already nice combo, but I got distracted with the real word and when I returned I just never moved forward, but that could change.
Thanks in advance!
Its ST damage is quite good from what I have seen in 23 levels, and AOE should be decent, though of course it has no damage aura. Still, Spin is a pretty strong AOE attack, and there are some cones to play with later. Plenty of people like Claws, so if you like the look of it, run with it.
I'm guessing my thread with a build discussion is still near the top of threads, if you want to look for it. You can be pretty tough with a decent build, and do good damage.
Yeah, Shield and SS together are quite fun, though of course Scrappers don't have that option, yet. Was a great combo for a Tank... I keep waiting for another free server transfer so I can get him back on my home server... I moved him back when I could make Tanker Tuesday events and haven't touched him in ages. -
Quote:Awesome. This hearkens me back to my online ranked match days for Myth II, where I had the same coloring patterns for my soldiers.Without the drama how will I sell all the t-shirts I had printed up? The Team Pistacio ones are green with pink writing. The Team Pilgrim ones are grey with a slightly different shade of grey writing.
Darn, I miss those days. Myth II is still one of my favorite strategy games ever... it and Myth had awesome storylines. Too bad Bungie became the house of Halo and Halo alone after that. -
Can't recall In-N-Out's taste quite well enough to compare, but 5 Guys has quite good hamburgers, and they're fairly consistent: had them in Minnesota and Vancouver. Their fries are quite excellent as well.
I think I would say 5 Guys has more of the perfect diner style hamburger, where In-N-Out seemed a little less greasy or something (not that 5 Guys is super greasy, they just cook on a traditional diner grill). But it may be I'm thinking that just because I never have lettuce on my 5 Guys hamburgers.
Still, I'd put them up close to the better burgers I've had in little solo places. If you're ever in the Twin Cities, check out The Convention Grill in Minneapolis... awesome burgers, fries, and malts at that place. 5 Guys gets close to those, I would say. -
Funnily enough, leveling a tri-form Kheldian was a good crash course in building for me. As you level a tri-form, it's actually better to focus on one form at a time, or your effectiveness goes way down from spreading your slots too thin over a lot of things. A lot of little things from IOs probably isn't too helpful, but a big thing (like def cap or much higher defenses) can really turn things around.
Arcana captured that well in that quote. -
Quote:I dunno, I'll see where I start with Pratchett. If I like an author well enough, I can read through their admittedly weaker stuff, since their weaker stuff is still pretty decent. The Beautiful and the Damnedisn't a patch on The Great Gatsby, but it was still interesting to read, for instance. I may just start with The Colour of Magic and go from there.I found "Small Gods" to be brilliant. It's more of a one-off story, but it tinkers around a lot on theology and the powers of belief. On top of that, the "tortoise god" cursing people was constantly hilarious to me.
To the OP: I would recommend starting the DiscWorld reads with "Guards! Guards!" though. It's the first of the town guards books, and Sam Vimes is a terrific character to follow. You can definitely go back and hit the previous books and not lose anything, but if "Guards! Guards!" doesn't hook you on DiscWorld, nothing will.
And, as others have mentioned, if you have not read "Good Omens" as of yet, why haven't you? -
Quote:I'm not saying that it isn't silly, just that people do have it.That perception is rather silly. Min/Maxing existed in CoH prior to the introduction of IOs. IOs simply raised the bar in potential, complexity and variety. Never mind that Purple IOs are actually detrimental to some builds.
A lot of people say/think things about min/maxxers that may or may not be true. I know that what I can build for with my Scrappers is usually not what people on the Scrappers go for, so I know there are different ideas about min/maxxing among good players, too.
Anyway, it's a common issue. I'm still trying to work on a more expensive build (or two) to put on my guide, but the person that originally asked for one basically asked for a Purpled out build, which I pointed out may not help out that much, especially for a Fiery Aura Tank. Upping Grey Pilgrim's resists and defenses has done a lot more for him than more recharge, for instance.
Heh, this is why I tell my students to define terms they use in their papers. Even things like "gun control" can have a lot of different meanings to different people. -
Quote:Since PERC events usually involve lots of people winning prizes of inf, etc., FROM PERC (of which MP is just a part of) that's... kind of a weird direction to go. The Memory Lane contest alone gave out a ton of stuff to what... 25-30 people? And they do that kind of thing all the time... I don't really think of PERC as some nasty hoarder of money (or using it for their own purposes), but a player event committee that does fun events and hands out prizes like they are candy. It sounded like you were accusing MP of using PERC personally to bank-roll Min-Max builds.
Anyway, I would not have thought my original statement would be construed as it was. I had no idea I had such a mean reputation around here!
Quote:My gripe is with folks who claim they cannot afford IOs and thus are incapable of any form of min/max build. If you play CoH, you have time to make a min/max build.
But yes, if anyone ever posts that IOs take too much work or they can't afford them, I point out that this really isn't true. Anyone can stock up merits and get a lot of inf from selling an expensive IO, and they can get those merits from playing content that they enjoy.
If they just don't want to be bothered with them, I can certainly understand that, as you said.
Quote:I just have a hard time figureing out the right way to min/max alts. Some things are obvious, but almost all of the set combos require you giving up somethng to get something else. Many depend entirely on how you want to play in order to be effective. It is rare to see a "min/max" build in the player help sections that everyone agrees on.
And of course, other types of approaches can work great as well. If you team a lot, I've seen people advocate not even bothering with some defense on squishies. I'd say defense helps no matter what, but they've said they enjoy it quite a bit. *shrugs*
Quote:Which is clearly LOLable, because in addition to the yearly auction (just for funding Victory events), I fund PERC (on Victory and other servers) for over 10 billion a year in inf and IOs. (For just Memory Lane I put out well over 2 bill in IOs and 1.5ish in straight up inf)
I of course knew what GP meant, but I did laugh when two different people came to me concerned.
And now on topic: After Hami Tonight I am thinking about a speed Kahn into ITF into (maybe) Baracuda. I hate Baracuda, but... I'm willing to try it hard core style. -
Quote:It depends on the critic. It sounded like Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune liked the earth segment of the film much more (but more for it characters and humor than anything else), while I have heard others gush about the look of Asgard. But of course, Michael Phillips also compared the cold of Jutenheim with the University of Minnesota Duluth campus, even though Duluth had the same temps and weather as Chicago the day he put out that review.Well I heard that while Asgards walking down the street looked campy and the Midgard story was essentially a "fish out of water" story, the other worldness of Asgard and Jotunheim was too different (and too dark in the case of Jotunheim, too CGI shiny for Asgard) for the casual comic fan.
Of course for those who enjoy Baysplosion action films enjoyed all the SMASH fighting scenes, it was great (which still explains why those same people still think X-Men 3 was the best movie of the trilogy).
Critics aren't always perfect, of course. I generally like Roger Ebert, but he seems to be one of those that can't see the pros of the Thor movie that I have read from other critics like Roeper and Phillips. *shrugs*
Frankly, it probably also depends on if the projectors and visuals were bright/clear enough for the CGI stuff, as people have noted in this thread as well. -
Quote:Huh, I didn't know that about The Train Robbery episode. I usually get thrown off by that one after watching the pilot, as the pilot is much more serious: the train robbery one starts to pick up the humor that goes with the seriousness the show can offer. As a moderate fan of Buffy and a huge fan of Angel, I was anticipating Firefly. The first episode they showed was the train robbery one, which was not nearly as good as the pilot, an episode that is almost perfectly plotted with the character reveals timed to an amazing degree. That said, the train robbery wasn't a terrible episode, it was just lackluster. Come to find out that they had literally written it over a weekend when Fox said they weren't going to show the pilot first, and it's impressive that the thing is watchable at all.
Fox seemed to offer a mea culpa by allowing Dollhouse to run past its natural expiration date (and by Fox's standards, allowing it to run past episode 3 was a major admission of guilt), and they certainly gave Human Target a fair shake despite its middling ratings, but this year they've reverted to their usual practice of letting a show go after it fails to be an immediate hit.
I don't know if I entirely like the pilot, though... like all pilots, it's rather rough and doesn't do the show quite right (not that I have ever seen a pilot that is not like this). It introduces things well for the show, but other things felt off: I didn't really start to like the movie until the third episode, to be honest. Shindig is the one that really sealed the deal on my love for it, though. -
Quote:Wait... how is asking questions and using the joking smiley face calling someone out now?In case anyone was confused... GP was saying that he has won several PERC contests (for lots of inf) and that is how he has funded (some of) his builds. I just want to make sure people were reading this right, as someone was worried GP was calling me out, which I know is not the case.
So confused (in case anyone was confused by that smiley as well, heh).
Maybe my brain is still hurting from grading some crummy final exams today (seriously... if you don't believe me, I can give you some grade-A examples that will hurt your brain to read), but this seems weird to me.
Although I see Ryxx and Ele are hating on Peacebringers again.I need to start bringing mine into trials with them just to rub it in.
Quote:No drama, no BS! Though maybe a tf competition would be fun!
Posi Part 1 might be interesting... those Ruin Mages are still rough on most teams.
Quote:No IO build is out of reach to anyone playing CoH. If you have limited time, then obviously it will take you longer. The notion that "I can't afford" a min/max build is precisely why these types are discussion don't alway go well in the current channels.
Quote:While I am really good at designing melee builds, I'm not so good at amassing the resources to obtain them. For this I rely on information provide by others who do keep on best ways to obtain the resources I need. Presently, I simply don't have the time or the inclination to keep on both.
Quote:This is precisely why I like the idea regarding this type of channel. A place where we can openly discuss build strategies and strategies for achieving them. These conversations can get technical and would not always be welcome in the current global channels.
Quote:Min/max does not refer to the most expensive build possible. It's about achieving the maximum you desire for the minimum amount of sacrifice.
People can be all over in how they define things, heh.
*added*
Yes, and I was joking earlier about how probably half of my net worth is due to winnings from PERC events. Maybe half... I might get more than that if I cashed in all my LoTGs and Miracle and Numina uniques I have grabbed via merits. -
I know! It's like people weren't posting left and right about the crazy things they were doing with Reactive in Cal Trops, of all things. And the devs never play their own game, at all, that'd just be silly.
-
If you can fit it in to your big AOE powers, the Force Feedback +recharge proc is awesome. It's quite easy to get it to fire if you use it in a crowd (gets a chance to fire with each target you hit), too. I could only manage to get it in to Nova's targeted AOE, but it fires constantly when I use it on teams... that big 100% recharge makes a big difference, even though it's for a short duration.
-
By min/max, MP, what do you mean? I like IOs and making builds (and helping people with them... I have chatted with plenty of people in channels about builds), but I'm not really one for the most expensive builds out there, since not everyone is rich--or has been bankrolled by multiple PERC events.
I'm doubting this will be the "we is so awesome" club, but I thought I would check.
