If I remember correctly, there WILL be a memorial of some sort, but we won't get it until at least Issue 24 (no specific timeframe was given, but Issue 24 would be the earliest a memorial would likely show up at this point).

I can't even remember where I originally heard about CoH. Must've been a gaming mag or something given that the game was still in beta at the time. It was my first MMO experience, and I was such a gigantic newb when it came to MMO conventions, playstyle, and even controls. Looking back, it was almost embarrassing. My first beta character was a science-origin Dark/Dark defender named Darkwave. At some point, I switched to an Ice Armor/Battle Axe Tanker, and "tested" with him all the way to the Rikti nuking the beta server out of existence.
In the eight years since, I've played a lot of MMOs. I've seen many of them fall by the wayside for one reason or another. But CoH has thus far stood tall, and has been the only MMO I've never been able to walk away from. I guess you do always remember your first.
So here's to eight years, and more still to come (at least to the ten-year mark)! -
Quote:I always figured Super Personality theoreticaly included what would eventually become Fear and Taunt effects. My guess is that Super Personality = Leadership, Super Willpower = Willpower, and Density Control = Gravity.
Having not been in the alpha testing, I'm not sure just how much was actually coded. I do remember it being stated that during one of the demos (I think an E3 press demo that Jack Emmert did running commentary for) that the powers used by the player were the only actual powers that existed at that point. -
Quote:The "master of none" half of the saying wasn't added until the 18th century. Being a "Jack of All Trades" just means that you aren't specialized in one particular area. Granted, this does go against the typical MMO mentality of "you do this thing, I do that thing, and Bob does this other thing". But the way I see it, my presence on a team is not to bring something otherwise nonexistent to the table, but to further enhance that which other members bring. I add melee, ranged, and AoE damage. I buff my allies. I can debuff enemies with certain attacks. I can bring pets. And I can even Tank some (especially with my softcap defense/50% damage resistance build). This
And this.
Jack of all trades, master of nothing.. Still my best toon.
So I'm stuck with the backpack -- that's a purely mechanical conceit.
Jack of all trades, master of none. But oftentimes better than the master of one. - Adam Savage -

I don't know why people don't play Crabs.
I like being able to do a little bit of everything. Sure, other ATs can do one thing or another much better than I can. But who cares? I'm having fun! -
I can't help but wonder what the response would be if the roles were reversed and Manti was "fridged" (REALLY hate that term) for Psyche.

Quote:NO.I wouldn't hold my breath on this. After all, I13 was supposed to "fix" PVP, as well.
I13 was supposed to be the beginning of a number of long-term changes to the PvP system which would, hopefully, bring it to an eventual state of balance and fun.
However, due to a limited initial time window and resources, as well as a PvP playerbase that was NOT interested at all in testing, providing constructive feedback, or even discussing PvP changes in a civil manner (I was trying my best to test as a mainly PvE player, and I remember what it was like on the forums), it was decided to put further PvP changes on the back burner in favor of more pressing things. Things like Ultra Mode, Going Rogue, and Freedom -- all of which were major, time-intensive projects that affected a much larger percentage of the playerbase than PvP.
When Castle left Paragon, it's safe to assume whatever plans he had for PvP were likely scrapped. Assuming, of course, his long-term plans were even documented.
Sorry for the slight derail, but I'm sick and tired of people reinforcing this false assumption that the I13 PvP changes were the ONLY changes that were intended to be made to the system. -

Quote:Welcome to video game fanbases for the past decade."I can't have it NAO!" means NCSoft is punishing them.
"I can't have it free without using my PP stipend!" means NCSoft is stripmining their bank accounts.
"I can't have everything that long-time players are getting as special rewards!" means NCSoft is insulting them and making them feel like patsies.
The foul odor of entitlement that comes wafting from people who think the world owes them every privilege and every benefit for no extra effort or cost continues to astound me. If this is all it takes for NCSoft to lose a their subscription, then I dare say they were bound to lose it at some point anyway, for any number of completely innocuous reasons. Keeping such players "happy" is usually more costly, business-wise, than they are worth. -
Quote:That's standard operating procedure when splitting a team up to begin work on a new project.I think what they're doing is bringing in newer talent on the established project (CoH), while moving the veterans who have experience with the pitfalls of MMO design to the new one. Which makes sense, really. You put the people with the most experience who've done this before on the more difficult work.
And to clarify, Angelxman81: They're not moving ALL the "big names" off CoH; this isn't like a certain other MMO studio that tends to leave skeleton crews on their existing MMOs in order to quickly pump out their next big game. -

And there goes any credibility your argument may have had.well if it's the 1st or the 5th, from Dec1st-march 31st, I am many others have still spent the same amount of money just as you other guys an gals. just to be told we don't get anything, thats a slap in the face to us an my sg wonders why i cancealed both my accounts yesterday,

For the record, Synapse has said that eventually all or most sets that can be proliferated to an AT will be proliferated to that AT. It's just a matter of when.

Quote:Thank you so much for making my post for me, Liquid. The first major reason I don't PvP in CoH is that I like my PvP to be balanced, and I don't believe it's possible to have balanced PvP in an MMORPG that wasn't designed around it from the ground up. They could, however, attempt to balance the sides. I've made multiple attempts to give PvP a chance here, both before and after I13, and the only time I ever actually had fun was about a 5 minute period where an equivalent number of heroes and villains were fighting each other. Then one side resorted to cheap tactics and the other side started losing members because of it, and it wound up lopsided and boring (and I've been on winning and losing sides, it's only fun for me if there's a relatively even match).
The second major reason is that our PvP "games" in the PvE zones aren't very engaging, and are actually all PvE mini-games with deathmatch thrown in as a way to prevent you from completing the PvE mini-game. The Arena, meanwhile, only has deathmatch. Deathmatch hasn't been enough to sustain a population in a PvP focused game since around 1999. Counter Strike, Team Fortress, and Left 4 Dead all have interesting goals that require strategy and tactics, and they have longevity because of it.
I, personally, think it's too late to salvage the PvP in this game, due to the damage done to the community, the age of the game, and most importantly, the fact that the original design wasn't focused on PvP (and probably never even took PvP into account until Issue 4 was being worked on). However, if they wanted to make an attempt, I'd say that improving the actual gameplay of PvP should be top priority, and that means new or improved mini-games with actual PvP objectives, and balanced sides. If PvP had something to offer, PvP gameplay-wise, besides trying to kill other players, and players trying to prevent you from getting Shivans and Nukes, more people might try it.
I still don't think it will ever be well balanced, because we've got tons of powers that were never designed with PvP in mind. They've been tweaked for PvP, but some builds are just weak or strong due to the basic conceptual design of the powers involved. Good PvP games have abilities and options specifically designed for how they will work and complement each other in PvP.
The bottom line for me is that this game was never originally designed for PvP. Before Issue 13, it was "rock-paper-scissors" in the arena and in zone PvP unless you had truly massive, zone-wide battles (which quickly decreased in frequency for various reasons). The changes made in Issue 13 were a good first step in that having powers and ATs operate under a second set of rules in PvP meant they could be rebalanced for PvP, but the time and resources given to Castle to do this were severely inadequate. Also, many members of the PvP community at the time were anything but helpful. They could have tested and provided robust, conducive feedback which could have affected the changes; instead they essentially folded their arms, stomped their feet, and demanded that the developers bow to their whims. Quite a shameful display. -
Yeah, Zwil mentioned it either during a Ustream or in a forum post. Jay left to join his friend's start-up.

*Reads thread*
*Thinks about the "TOO MUCH MAGIC!" talk that's been happening lately*
*Chuckles* -
Knowing what your character looks like, that's quite impressive.
As for me, I tend to usually go with Tech or Magic, as either of those origins can cover a lot of ground in the CoH universe. I do use the others where necessary; just not to the extent of the two mentioned. -

Quote:As I've said in other threads, the problem is not that the leaks exist -- given that the studio works concurrently on multiple game updates, they're unavoidable. The problem is that, since you don't need a special invite to take part in VIP betas, some players see this as free reign to post every last shred of information about those leaks that they can to public areas of the board.No.
It's Beta. Things are sloppy and unfinished in Beta. That's standard operating procedure and the reason to have a Beta. That's the way it is in all MMOs.
Expecting Beta to be a preview of a finished product is the unreasonable expectation. Beta is to *test* and find bugs (and leaks) so they they can be tightened up.
Loosen it up, player.
And for those wondering: Yes; I AM making a statement by posting in every thread related to leaked content. -
-
Difference is, many of those leaks - which are usually of things in very early development - don't make it out closed beta except in small trickles. For some reason, people see "VIP beta" and think it's fine to smash open the pipe and turn a leak into a full-blown torrent or water. And that kinda irks me.
-
I'm sure the "leaks" aren't intentional, and are the result of concurrently working on multiple game updates. Maybe it's a QA issue that they're visible; maybe not. The problem comes when players see those leaks and, players being players, start digging to find out more and then post whatever info they can find on a non-beta section of the boards because they're under the belief that since this isn't a "closed" beta, there's no room for a little decorum.
-
What they NEED is to go back to closed beta testing. That way, people won't be under the impression that they can go posting information/pictures about stuff on beta that may not be part of the content being tested in the general discussion forum.
-
Quote:You really shouldn't be doing either.Telling people how to check this stuff out is not really much different from posting screenshots
Christ, do I miss actual closed betas. Some info might've leaked out, but at least most people involved weren't under the compulsion to go running off to City Life to yammer on about every thing they saw that wasn't yet ready for beta testing.
