In my perfect game world, the ski chalet would just be left open all year round (minus mission contacts and probably the candy cane store), along with some new addition on the other side of the club. The club is in a pocket dimension created by DJ Zero; there's no reason why it can't expand!
As for the event being extended? Don't really care either way. It's a fairly unobtrusive event. -

I fell asleep at 10 PM. I woke up and it's suddenly 2011.
OMG I'M A TIME LORD!!!!!! -
Quote:Well, Pinnacle is one of the less populated servers. But by no means does that mean it's "dead". As others have said, join some of the Pinnacle global channels and don't be afraid to start teams sometimes instead of always looking for stuff already going on.And so many e-mails to clear out @_@
As the title said, I haven't played in two years, but now I'm back. What are the critical things I need to know?
Most importantly - where is everyone? I enter Atlas Park and it is dead. Not 'kind of quiet' dead, but 'not even people spamming for contests or sewer team' dead. Am I in the wrong zone, or is my 'home' server (Pinnacle) just dead?
As for what you've missed in 2 years ...
I'm going to assume that you were here for Issue 12, which introduced the Midnighter's Club and Cimerora. In that case, go to this page and start with the link for Issue 13. A LOT has changed over the last two years, so it's easier to just point you in the right direction than try to make a list that even comes close to being accurate. -
It's 1 AM here in England, so officially MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Quote:WAIT A DANG MINUTE!It was truly a pleasure, Matt. And, as for the powers sheets, Tim, Phil and Chris have it under control. Relax!
Why did you reply to Positron? He was talking to Castle!
And how do you know about the power sheets?
And you referred to developers by their proper first names, as if you knew them and worked with them on a daily basis!
"Location: A Castle"
*GASP*
Oh my god! This is it -- the evidence I've been waiting for all this time! Why, I can't believe I wasn't able to put it all together before ...
BATMAN IS REALLY MILLIONAIRE PLAYBOY BRUCE WAYNE! -
AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
(Transmetropolitan makes a great holiday gift for the comic lover in your life!)

Since he started this thread a couple of days ago.
Short version: After six years on CoH, he feels it's time to change scenery and work on something new. So his last day working for Paragon Studios will be December 24th. -
Quote:tl;drDude, the horse is dead already. We get it, you HATE tankers the way they are right now, which is balanced towards survivability more than offense, the Stone Wall (sometimes literally) to the Brute's Mighty Glacier and the Scrapper's more Lightning Bruiser style.
We already understand that you have no concept of balance, or how to play a tank properly. Your join date doesn't matter, your prior experience in the game doesn't matter, you want the developers to make the tanker the strongest melee AT in both offense and defense despite the fact that this would kill all semblance of balance in the game when tankers are already QUITE capable of performing as they were intended.
Yes, there are some builds for the other two non-stalker melee AT's that can reach Tanker levels of protection in defense, and for Brutes Resistance. Those are what are called Outliers, builds that go beyond what the developers expected and intended for people to do with the given tools.
I mean, Christ, I haven't even been active on the forums for two years yet and I'm already sick of hearing this. Every time I see your username I know the thread's going to be hit with a post complaining about how tankers aren't 'real' tanks despite the fact that they do the job their name implies better than any other AT in the game.
I have a crab build that has positional defenses either capped or almost there at all times without outside buffs. Oh no, a range-biased character with positional softcaps!
Balnse iz teh runed!
Except...crabs have no Defense Debuff Resistance, so they are heavily vulnerable to Cascading Defense Failure...just like every non-melee AT that builds up a significant amount of +def bonuses from powers or set bonuses.
And yes, I DO have a tank myself. Shocking thing is that the only thing I dislike about her is that I wish BAB had managed to figure out how to alter Granite so that Stone Armor was completely customizable.
That's because I understand how Party Roles and Group Dynamics WORK. Blasters nuke, Scrappers shred, Defenders buff, Controllers mez, Kheldians suck*, and Tankers take one for the team.
Of course, you're obviously confused by this perfectly sound logic because you THINK that Tankers were named after tanks, as in the military weapon, when in all reality they were named for their ROLE as damage sponges.
Perhaps if the developers had used that logic and named them after something used by the military to force the enemy to waste attacks on something that isn't going to be damaged easily rather than something known outside the MMO community as a major source of damage, you'd think differently.
The only problem is, 'Decoy' doesn't sound very heroic.
*I'll gladly invite one if asked and there's room, but I just don't like playing as them. -
Quote:*sigh*This. A lot. This smells badly. I admit I'm wondering whether or not I should renew both of my accounts because I usually do it for a year.
Why do people always assume that there's some sort of dread conspiracy behind everything? In Castle's own words, he decided to seek new scenery because he'd essentially been doing the same thing for five years. Is it so hard to believe that some people might find themselves getting into a rut after working on the same thing for that amount of time? Is it so hard to believe that his decision had nothing to do with BAB's being laid off which, while a blow to the community, is fairly standard corporate practice and doesn't necessarily imply any sort of greater internal troubles at Paragon Studios?
I guess some folks just WANT to see doom and gloom in everything. -

Quote:I'd like to point out that deleting files and re-patching only works if you connect to one of the patch servers with the correct patch, and is only effective so long as your updater doesn't happen to again connect to the screwed up patch server at some point. If/when that happens, it'll just update your game to the wrong version again, and you're back at square one. This happened to me last night. Played all morning with no issues, then came back in the evening and had this happen.
There's several threads over in the Technical Issues forums with probable cause and viable solutions.
What appears to have happened is that at least one of the update servers has the wrong version of the game on it. If you get unlucky and hit that server when loading up the game, it "patches" you back to the incorrect version and everything stops working.
If you look in the version.ini file you'll see a version ending in xxxxx.x.xx.x.x.24 if you've got the wrong version and xxxx.xx.x.x.x.xx.27 if you've got the right version.
To fix: delete the checksum file, delete the prv file, delete the version.ini file and then force a re-update to occur.
If you want to, you can force the updater to hit a specific server (which we know has the correct version on it) with this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -ps 64.25.34.144
---
I'd expect that things will be "properly" fixed very soon, as it's now Monday and the folks should be getting into the office and fixing things quickly.
Adding the -ps string to your CoHUpdater shortcut is the ONLY way to fix this problem for sure. -
THOSE EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE, PLEASE READ THIS:
I'm posting this again, even though it's been posted several other places:
What's likely happened is that one (or more) of the patch servers got either a wrong version of the patch, or didn't get it at all. If your updater happens to connect to that server, it will see your game as not being up to date, and will "fix" your data so that it matches its version -- which is wrong. This is why the problem can be temporarily fixed by logging off and on: you'll probably connect to one of the other patch servers, all of which will patch your game to the right version. Problem is, every time you run the updater, you run the chance of connecting to the bad patch server.
There are two things you can do to fix the issue or keep it from happening:
1) If you are currently experiencing this problem, add the following argument string to the end of your CoH UPDATER shortcut: "-ps 64.25.34.144" (without the quotes). It should look something like this:
"C:\yourpath\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -ps 64.25.34.144
This forces the updater to always connect to the listed patch server, which does have the proper patch on it. This should be enough to fix the problem and keep it from happening again until the folks working the servers can properly resolve the issue and you can again use all the patch servers.
2) If you already have the right patch applied and want to keep from getting hit with the problem next time you start up the game, you can either use the above fix, or you can just bypass the updater completely by making a shortcut to your cityofheroes.exe file (NOT CoHupdater.exe), and adding the following argument string to the end of the path: - project "coh" (quotation marks included). Downside to this is that you'll need to run the updater whenever there's a patch.
That's all there is to it. -
I'm not starCloud, but yes; the -ps string only works with CoHUpdater.exe. Trying to use it with cityofheroes.exe does absolutely nothing because the -ps 64.25.34.144 string forces the updater to connect to one specific patch server that we know contains the right patch, while cityofheroes.exe -project "coh" completely bypasses the updater.

This is what it comes down to in a nutshell. The fight against Trapdoor was designed around a specific mechanic: the presence of "bifurcation" clones who boost the real Trapdoor's regeneration when present and who spawn at specific locations on the map, regardless of the real trapdoor's location. Players who were pulling trapdoor outside of the range of his clones were breaking the encounter design. Plain and simple. And this is unfortunately not a pen-and-paper RPG with a GM who could adjust the encounter as needed on the fly to accommodate the players breaking the encounter as designed.
We're a bit spoiled in this game because the vast majority of major encounters in this game are NOT built around encounter-specific mechanics. Usually it's just "Throw Big Bad A and/or Big Bad B into room X, and let the players beat down on the big bag(s) of HP". When the Romulus Augustus final encounter came along, players figured out fairly quickly that they could still just stand there and beat him down in most cases, despite the developers having clearly tried to come up with an encounter which relied upon specific mechanics to avoid that very solution. The Reichsman encounter also relies on encounter-specific mechanics, although many would argue that in trying to keep players from reverting back to the old "stand and punch" tactic, they made the encounter exceedingly gimmicky.
The Trapdoor encounter is actually well-designed, except for the part where players could pull Trapdoor away from where his bifurcations spawned, thereby once again reducing the encounter to "Stand next to Big Bad A and punch him until he's defeated." So yes, the devs are trying to tell you how to play in this case, because they designed the encounter around a mechanic that players were capable of completely sidestepping, thereby taking away the one major challenge in the encounter (not including any general challenges faced by low damage or low defense players fighting an Elite Boss).
Should this have been fixed before I19 went live? Sure. It was known about during the beta. Unfortunately, things end up in the QA pipeline when they do, and it's not always possible to implement a fix for a bug that comes along as soon as that fix is made. -
I care not for Olivia Munn, but it's about pants-on-head retarded to argue that her stock hasn't risen. G4 is a small, niche cable channel. Comedy Central is one of the most popular, mainstream cable channels. And having a sitcom actually air on network television - regardless of its placement during the season or even whether or not it bombs - is higher profile still.

Quote:I ... but ... they ... you ... how ... if ... when ... it ... why ...The accuracy nerf to purple drops are costing too much endurance in AE, which has completely wrecked PvP. Furthermore, now that no one plays tankers anymore because brutes can go to blue side, flippers have made it impossible to buy any recipes useful to stalkers, who can't go on TFs because they have too much single target damage. Unfortunately, because AE babies don't know how to access the new content without a server merge, CoH is doomed to buy Going Rogue, and badgers are spamming Atlas Park with questions about how to get to the ferry. The new Ultra Mode graphics are preventing people with Storm Summoning from getting on teams which is a problem because knockback is the best mitigation other than intangibility, unless you are fighting enemies with redraw.

The thing that a lot of the "give us more slots" folks just refuse to see is that the reason for making Fitness an inherent set wasn't so that we'd have an additional 3 power choices. Had the developers wanted to, they could have accompanied the Fitness change by reducing the number of power slots by three and shifting around what powers and slots players earned at what levels. But that would likely have been quite a bit of work when it was just as feasible an option to leave the level-up progression as it was, resulting in a coincidental 3 extra power slots now being available.
Had the devs' intention been to give us 3 extra power slots, and making Fitness inherent was the means to that end, they probably would have given us extra slots. But it wasn't, so they didn't. -
Quote:Yes, because in every other part of the world the maintenance will take 2 hours, whereas somehow only in the Eastern Standard timezone it will take 14 hours.Lets hope so. Since every place I've seen that announcement..it said the same thing.
I'm honestly not trying to be rude or condescending, but come on ... you can't honestly believe that in the slightest, can you? -
Quote:This is the announcement. Please read it again and check the beginning and end of the downtime for all other listed timezones:In the announcement it clearly states that the downtime for EST will be ALL DAY.. 6am to 9pm. I'm really hoping this was a typo because if not.. WTF
