I think we're getting onto dangerous ground here - it's possible someone could start accusing George Lucas of making the prequels enhance the story of the older movies.

Quote:Yeah - like to one person, something could be cool - so it's a trope - but to someone else, it' s a cliche.Essentially:
Tropes: "Oh, cool. This is this.
Cliche: Oh man. This again?
It's...*blink*...oh wow. It's that gray area between recognizable and annoying. No wonder we're having an issue here.
I really don't think it's possible to totally say for sure when something's been used too much, or just the right amount, as that will be differnt for each person. -
Well, they do seem to fit it pretty well

It was awesome - it was a a real "look at me mom!" animation

Welcome home

You might notice one or two changes to the game since you were last here

Actually, it'd probably make more sense to make the exit from Outbreak be a police van, like the entry to Safeguards - so after you'd helped the cops, they'd give you a lift to Atlas or Galaxy

The ITF cutscene works best if you trigger the area music at the same time - it makes it totally awesome

The Euro servers do have small populations, and teaming is not as easy as on the American servers - that's why it's very important for anyone who meets a new player to make sure they join the main server channel, so they get connected with the community right away.

They might not have known in advance - if the exploit was only just discovered, then they might have made the patch in less than 24 hours.

Quote:Pleading the 5th is using your right to refuse to answer a question that could incriminate youOk, question time: I just looked up the 5th amendment and I'm now wondering what abuse of government authority in legal procedures has to do with anything. This is not intended to be inflammatory in any way, I just really don't get the reference.

Well, I still think they're basically the same thing

Quote:But if it's all just a matter of opinion, then all tropes will be cliches to some peopleBy the definition of each side. All cliches are tropes, but not all tropes are cliches. You may argue about whether or not something falls into one category or another, but since there are no cliches that are not tropes, there will always be at least an equal amount of cliches to tropes, and generally more tropes than cliches.
-
Quote:How can you be sure of that, if there's no clear line between them?It doesn't appear to be a clear line because it isn't a clear line. No one person decides what is a cliche and what is just a trope, no more than one person decides what is conventional and what isn't.
Needless to say, the set of tropes is much larger than the set of cliches.
-
That's not really a very clear line between them though - like who decides when something's overused, and when it's just a convention?
-
But isn't that still the same? Like a convention is a cliche, because if it's been used enough to become a convention, then it must have been oversued?
