  1. If someone needs to switch character or leave, make sure they quit the team before they log off. Or weird stuff can happen.

    Meh.
  3. Not exactly new but it sure is fun.
  4. It's still not about the difficulty, it's about the appearance. The blue caves are ugly.

It's not technically called a story-arc. It's really just a bunch of stuff that happens, and which somewhat explains the politics of Mercy in a roundabout and simplified way. My plan was to make an arc which reflects this arc and shows what's really going on behind the scenes.
  6. Thanks for your review.

I'd be interested to know how it could be made much better. I mean, I've only done what the devs do in Kalinda's starting missions. They're all unconnected without clues or any kind of story to tie them together. In fact what I've got here is already more of a narrative than the introductory arcs in CoV, since I'm building on those same missions.

Mission Layout: 4- While the missions were clear with clear cut objectives, the order they came in felt a little jumbled. They just felt out of order really. But other than that the maps were diversified, the enemies just as much, and things made sense.
They could really have been in pretty much any order. I added connections between missions 1 and 4, and mission 3 and 5, which meant that they suddenly had to come in that order. Mission 2 is sort of filler right now but I wanted it in there because it's not a lowbie villain arc without Snakes.

Playability/ Completion: 5- Seriously, I had my doubts on this. I was thinking that being a level 1-10 arc, I would find it too hard pre stamina and without my heavy duty powers I was so used to. Not to mention the 2 small insper and no enhancement rule I was adhering to. However allies made up where I was having difficulties and as such, made it very much solo able.
I use mostly standard mobs so it should be just as difficult as official missions at that level. I try to include lots of optional allies so the VEATs can use their team-buffing powers if they want to.

Overall: 16 points. (B+) A great mix of baddies and diversified maps made this one notice able. While that might not be something that matters to a VEAT who has already played and killed most of the things found on this arc, I'm sure new players would enjoy it by far. As such, I'm keeping track of this mission for the next time I meet one in CoV. Good job!
Thanks a bunch. Glad you liked it.
  7. We played Two Households Alike today.

I've played it before and gave it 4 stars back then. It seems to have been updated since because it has new custom enemies I don't remember from the previous run. I can't say that I particularly cared for the fire monsters in the last mission. I think they were stacking Smoke to an annoying level. Some team-members complained about that while I was lying dead in their midst.

On a large team the story was difficult to follow. Large battles and patrols made short work of bosses we were supposed to fight long before we could find them, causing their dialogue to go off seemingly at random. This was just about the only problem I had with it though. Other team-members thought the story was kind of dull and unimaginative.

I gave this version of the arc 3 stars. It might just have aged badly or the team experience made me like it less than before.

The brown caves (villain-style) work just as well but aren't tear-my-eyes-out ugly.
  9. If I'm back home from celebrations by then, sure. (Swedes celebrate it on Christmas eve.)
  10. I played Talos Vice a long time ago, and The Destroyer of Worlds recently, and commented upon them in PMs. If you'd like to review one or two of my VEAT arcs, that would be great.

    The Tangled Weave: 338575
    A Taste For Evil: 349034
Fear And Loathing On Striga: 350522

    Thanks in advance.
  11. The "blue" cave maps are an abomination. It takes a very good reason for me to approve of any mission using them. It won't change my ratings but it might make me question the author's sanity; when we have perfectly fine alternatives, why use the ugliest and least liked maps?
  12. All other servers are wasting Pocket D as a social spot and RP place by not having it full of people every day like on Virtue.

I could still go along with your idea though since I'm not too bothered by people actually (*gasp*) playing the game when I stand around looking at roleplayers. But I understand where those who wouldn't want the place cramped up by griefers even more than it is now are coming from.
  13. I'd appreciate reviews of my arcs: 338575, 349034 and 350522. Thanks!

But there is no such inferiority. A well made arc is just as rewarding as a normal arc (minus Merits and end of mission xp, of course, which are somewhat compensated for by Tickets and ease of play - no travel time, etc). It's just sad that people compare the normal rewards rate with the rate they could get using the exploits found in the early MA and decide that now MA arcs are worthless. And then they spread rumors to that effect which makes new players avoid the MA too. It's ridiculous.

If the devs found a way to reward MA players in a way which wasn't too good but perhaps just different from the normal rewards, we might see an influx of more players. I'm thinking about stuff like what we get from the Mayhem and Safeguard missions - everyone's done them a hundred times but we still play them because they give us temporary powers we can't get anywhere else.

Maybe if we could buy special enhancements or recipes only available in the MA store we might see more players basking in that green glow. Or maybe we need something else to make people actually play and rate arcs instead of just farming for more tickets. I don't know.
  16. I'll just let you pick and choose from my villainous VEAT arcs. More info in the link in my signature, here are the titles and IDs:

    The Tangled Weave
    Arc ID: 338575
    Level 1-10

    A Taste For Evil
    Arc ID: 349034
    Level 10-20

    Fear And Loathing On Striga
    Arc ID: 350522
    Level 21-29

Just remember that these arcs were made with Soldiers and Widows of Arachnos in mind so the contact and enemies will be treating you like you belong to that AT. Just so you know.
  17. I wish we could craft the weapons multiple times so we didn't run out of "ammo" in the middle of a mission.

Ideally we would craft these powers and then use influence to "fuel" them so we wouldn't run out ever, but that's just a pipe dream, I'm sure.
  18. A good idea. Add a bunch of decorative items like work-out machines, oversized dumbbells and weights, target dummies, etc and it'll be great.
  19. Several things come together to make the MA seem unfair when it comes to star ratings and database searches based on those ratings.

    Issues:

    1. The 5-star bias in the search engine combined with the way ratings are averaged means that anything but a 5-star rating is a death sentence for a story arc as far as the search engine is concerned. The names of the ratings don't reflect this. 3 stars is ”good”, 4 stars is ”excellent”. These names seem to indicate that they are perfectly acceptable ratings for a good arc. In reality they are severe penalties which cause arcs to drop from the all-important 5-star rank sooner.
It is far too easy to down-rate an arc, for griefing purposes or to push down arcs which dare to appear above your own arc in the search result lists. Or even by accident, considering how a 3 or 4 star rating might seem like a good score when in reality it isn't.
A single 1-star rating turns an arc with seven 5-star ratings into a 4-star arc. Once an arc has dropped to 4 stars it is unlikely to show up among the first few hundred or thousand results in a random search and thus will rarely if ever see random plays again, further cementing its 4-star rating since nobody will play and rate it, up or down.
    2. It is possible to rate arcs without completing them. This is a boon to griefers and a bane to authors who want their arcs to receive fair ratings.
    3. The clutter of abandoned arcs, farms, tests and other debris in the database makes searching for arcs a chore. Finding anything actually worth playing is nearly impossible. Even if you find something that isn't an abandoned farm it is still likely to have been left untouched after the issue 16 exploit fixes drove away many players and creators. This means that even if an arc isn't a farm designed to abuse some kind of exploit it still might not provide any kind of proportional reward. This does not attract normal players who are both looking for a nice story and nice rewards to go along with it. A few people might like stories enough to not care about rewards. Those people are a very tiny minority, I'm sure. By not removing arcs which haven't been updated to take these changes into account the MA database has become filled with mostly useless waste.

These are just some of the problems that I've noticed and discussed with other authors for the past few weeks and months. Below are some of my ideas for how to fix them, but I'm sure there are other solutions.

    1. Make it more difficult to down-rate an arc by making 1 and 2 star ratings count as 3 stars for the purpose of calculating averages. Every five 1-star ratings and every three 2-star ratings will actually count as 1 and 2 stars, in order to make sure that those arcs which really deserve such an abysmal score gets their just rewards.

Optionally just round fractions UP. That alone would go a long way to make down-rating an arc more difficult.
    2. Make it so you can't rate an arc if you don't actually complete it. I can't understand why we have this option at all.
    3. Add a flag to the database to mark all arcs which haven't been republished after a certain date. In this case we'd pick the issue 16 launch date since that was when the most recent drastic changes to the MA were introduced. Arcs with that flag don't automatically show up on searches in the MA. To remove the flag an author would simply have to open the arc in the editor and republish it. This way we would make sure that only arcs that are actively kept up to date are immediately visible in the MA. By checking a box a player could include arcs with the flag in their searches, if they wanted. This option should be off by default to make sure that casual players don't get their searches cluttered up by junk arcs.
  20. Moved 4 level 50 heroes and 2 lower-level villains off Virtue to make room for new alts. The heroes went to Guardian to join a friend's SG there. The villains went to Triumph to join the MA Super Team we've got running there a few times every week. Next week I'm moving six more.

I think I recall you saying you've had a total of 40 plays across all of your arcs - maybe by today's standards (post AE changes that chased a lot of farmers away) that was your "break".
I define break as getting hundreds of plays on my arcs. *shrug* It wasn't quite as low as 40 total (that was a guesstimate if I unpublished my most played arc, and I hadn't logged on to check my numbers) but I have 7 arcs published with about 200 plays total. One arc has 94 plays and has been up since day one. Another arc has about 45 plays. A third has 20-25.

And even if the farmers have left for greener pastures (not entirely true - I'm still farming in the AE, for fun and profit) they were unlikely to play my arcs anyway so I don't think that matters as much as other things.

For example: rumours about bad or no rewards in the MA; rumours about being banned if you by some accident happen to find an arc with good (i.e. normal) rewards in the MA (I've heard this one, I couldn't believe it either); old abandoned farms and tests and other debris still cluttering up the MA search engine; an unfair ratings system which hides well established 4-star arcs with hundreds of plays behind recently published 5-star arcs with 1 or 2 plays. Etc.

I think that the best we can hope for to correct some of these problems is a spring cleaning of the MA database, and (less likely) a new ratings system. If I thought it would help I would pester Dr. Aeon for something to be done about it but I don't think he's got that kind of clout. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
  22. I'm still waiting for my "break".
  23. They had the perfect opportunity to make Arbiters more interesting with the introduction of the VEATs. We could have got our special VEAT story arcs from the Arbiters, one or two complete story arcs in each zone to match the Kheldians, where we actually do work for Arachnos instead of trying to weasel our way on some list of Destined Losers. Too bad they went with the current arcs instead.
