Yes it's a fact. XP Mode was designed with applications in mind, not gaming. So it's incapable of 3D accelerations.

As has been stated in another thread about this, make sure you clear out any cookies pertaining to City Of Heroes boards and try again. This is an issue with cookies.

What browser are you using? What version of that browser? This is the for the latest version of Firefox. This is an issue with cookies. You need to find where cookies are in your browser's settings and remove the City Of Heroes ones so that they can be recreated.

When you're in the game, type: /netgraph 1 in the chat window. Down in the right hand corner you should now see a green bar. Is it all green? Or are there red or yellow spikes in it? To turn that bar off, just type: /netgraph 0

Quote:You are correct. Although this isn't always the case. Thankfully, I've never had this issue after following my above steps several times now. Granted, I do tend to use the same username when reinstalling an OS or upgrading an OSSomething else that could be an issue on the backup files is the user-name rights. If you are using a Windows NT5( 2000 / Xp), Windows NT6 (Vista / Win7), or Linux Install through Cedega you need to make sure that the files belong to the same username and group that you are trying the new install on.
E.G. : If your username is DaveMatthew and you save the files to a backup-partition, and then you try to copy those files over and use them on the username MatthewDave you could run into a permissions error.
Thanks for mentioning this. Wasn't even thinking about it. -
I would highly recommend you order the components from NewEgg, TigerDirect or a similar site and put the machine together yourself. You will absolutely save yourself quite a bit of money.
If you decide to go that route (Again, highly recommended) don't hesitate to ask around here for help choosing components. FatherXMas even has some links in his sig to a couple of machines worthwhile. Either way, you're going to spend more if you buy pre-built and you generally don't get the luxury of choosing the components you actually want. Even if you can choose, the selections are generally quite limited and nowhere near worth the amount they charge. -
Just out of curiosity, what was it exactly that didn't work when you tried to copy over your existing CoH folder?
The steps that have worked for me countless times now are as follows:
1. Copy the CoHUpdater.exe to your desktop and run it. It will ask you where you want to install it. Allow it to install where it wants or change the path to where you want to install it.
2. Once the updater starts downloading, hit cancel and close out of the updater.
3. Browse to the new installation directory (The one you selected in step 1) and copy over the content of your old CoH folder.
4. Delete the checksum file in that directory.
5. Click on the City Of Heroes icon on your desktop. (If it didn't create a shortcut on your desktop, just browse to the folder you installed to and start it from there. You may need to make a shortcut to your desktop from that folder.)
From there the Updater should notice you have most of the files and go directly into verification. It will fix any issues and you should be good to go.
Give that a try if you still have a backup of your original CoH directory -
Quote:Not to sound like a jerk, but yes. It's almost always the computers fault. But not in the way you think....Always something wrong with the computer?
Honestly if it had no problems before the patching and didn't exhibit these problems before hand then something in the game itself is sending the wrong signals to the graphics card.
I've had issues recently myself where my ID pic ends up being something else entirely (one time ended up being a clothing texture for the T-shirt) But has never had this problem when I started playing again and yes, before you ask, the drivers ARE up to date and so are all patches and updates to my operating system. Which is indiciative of a memory leak within the software causing certain objects and textures to get placed in the wrong areas or leaking into other texture calls.
Sometimes its not always the computer thats at fault.
What tends to fix this is restarting the game client entirely. However if its really bad and moves to something else, deleting the checksum.coh file or just re-installing it entirely may be a good option.
Updates generally fix things. Sometimes when something is fixed with the game, it allows for a bug between the OS/Drivers/Hardware and the game to surface. The majority of the time the issue lies with a driver and either a botched install or a corrupt file. As you can see from the CoH Helper log above, there is very clearly an issue with the registry and it's ability to inform the rest of the system of correct information.
Although I do understand where you're coming from, it's safe to assume that it's the computer/drivers/OS right off the bat. Until proven otherwise of course. The reason this type of mentality exists is because it's a fact that at the very absolute least 90% of the time the issue is with the computer, not the game. -
Have you tried disabling Vertical Sync in the game's graphics options?
-
The issue is with your cookies.
Here's how you fix it:
1. Click on Tools at the top.
2. Select Options.
3. Look for the Privacy icon across the top of this window and click on it.
4. In this dialog you are looking for "remove individual cookies". It will look like a link.
5. Once this window pops up, you will see a large list of cookies. There is also a search bar near the top. Go ahead and type in cityofheroes.com
6. You will notice that there are at least 4 or more listed. Highlight all of the ones that pertain to the boards (Generally boards.cityofheroes.com) and click on Remove Cookies.
7. Once that's done, you can close out of all of those windows, refresh the City Of Heroes boards and try logging in again.
This should work just fine. If it doesn't, go back into the cookies window, type in cityofheroes without the .com and remove all cookies that have the word cityofheroes in it. Hope this helps! -
No worries
I'm glad it worked for you.
I came across a lot more annoyed than I actually was. Which wasn't at all. Sorry, didn't mean to sound like that. -
There are at least 3 other threads with this exact same issue. Feel free to search. Or if you're too lazy...
The common fix appears to be right clicking on the shortcut on your desktop, clicking on properties and then going to the Compatibility tab and taking it out of compatibility mode. Make sure there is no checkmark in "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and also make sure you have "Run as Administrator" checked.
Hope this helps. -
Just to add a tiny bit here...
Without going too much into which is better per se, I've never experienced nearly as many problems with my nVidia cards as I have/had with ATI. I'm just posting this to show that everyone is going to have different experiences
On that note, je_saist that was very well put together information. Not just for the OP, but anyone else who might have had these questions. Thanks for putting in the effort! -
Have you tried changing the Window Scaling in the options as well as the font size in the in-game options as was suggested a few posts back?

Quote:I'm curious...what exactly does an Icon rebuild/repair function have to do with a corrupt Font file and or fonts in general?TweakXP from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/D...powertoys.mspx has a rebulid/repair icon function. Small free download so worth a try.

This is most definitely a cookie issue. This has to do with security settings. I would recommend going through those settings and change them one by one until you find the culprit.
Maybe if we knew what settings are currently in place for some of the people having an issue, we could find a solution to the issue. I can't say I'll know the answer, but posting your security settings could hopefully yield some results. Some of you may have securities high enough to cause an issue, and they may not necessarily be needed that high when coupled with security software etc. -
Oh my...that's...interesting.
I would recommend deleting the checksum file in your City Of Heroes directory and allow to re-verify the files. I'm assuming that this is only happening in City Of Heroes? If that's the case, clearly something is corrupt. -
Dr.,
Please post a CoH Helper log rather than a DXDiag.
So far by the looks of it, barring any consistencies between the 2 CoH Helper logs, you're both running 32-bit. If Dr can post that CoH Helper, maybe we can find another thing in common to find a solution -
Quote:Just to clarify, Microsoft Security Essentials is an AV/Malware/Spyware software combination. It's not necessary to run AVG as well. In fact, it's pretty much redundant. No need to bloat your system with 2 softwares that do the same thing. My August Sir,
Yes I have a nVidia 8800 GTX and I make sure that baby gets fed from nVidia right after the MOBO gets updated.
By the way, I tested Microsoft Secuty Essecials and AVG Free with the COH - Windows 7 combination. They worked great, What problem? However, Computer Associates dosen't.

A CoH Helper log is more useful than the DXDiag as it condenses the information down to information pertaining to game specifically and any oddities. That might prove more helpful.
As for the issues themselves, the first one I'm not sure about it. Never seen/heard of this issue.
The second issue I have come across. I personally came across this issue in Vista rather than in Windows 7. After some quick research, this seemed to happen as often as the crashing due to the memory leak. If I had played a toon for a long period of time and then tried to alt, the game would crash just shortly after the character allegedly zoned. I was also unable to alt-tab and had to CTRL+ALT+DEL to end the task. A couple of times I had to hard boot the machine. I could pretty much reproduce this issue several times. -
Quote:The game generally uses below a gig (Around 600-700k as you mentioned in your first post) when the engine is running optimally. That's not something that's possible with the introduction of a new issue (Update). Each time a new issue is released, the game skyrockets memory usage to a gig and above. Generally becoming unstable around 1.5gigs of memory usage.I did stress out several times that it is not normal for my game with my settings to hit above 1 gB, even in 'heavy' places and that I wanted to share this info.
So sure, your game ran at 600-700k when the game was functioning properly, but it most certainly won't when it's not. There was a major issue released just a short bit ago, and it actually changed the way the game functions with itself (ie. Power Customization). So it's basically impossible for a game to receive such a huge update, and continue to run optimally in such a short amount of time. That's even ignoring the fact that the Halloween event was so close there was probably very little time to worry too much about optimizing the last Issue.
The devs need to optimize the code a bit and patch up the memory leak of course, but that doesn't happen over night. What boggles me is how anyone can act so surprised or bent out of shape over something that happens EVERY SINGLE TIME there is a new issue released.
Keeping in mind that due to these changes and the upcoming Going Rogue, chances are slim this game will ever run in the 600-700MB range again. If it does, I'll be pleasantly surprised. So as much as you didn't want to hear it, buy more RAM.
All that aside....If you read the thread that was linked a few replies up, you'll see that you are absolutely not the only one experiencing these issues and even those with copious amounts of RAM are having stability issues because the game has a terrible memory leak. I realize you were looking to help, but unless you know the code of this game and are a programmer who's pretty good at optimizing code, there isn't really much you can do. Just as there's nothing I can do. Other than /bugging any issues we might have or letting the devs know of specific situations that cause the memory leak etc on your particular machine. -
Quote:Please show where he asked you to "buy more RAM". He simply asked how much you had.I usually got 2 gigs of RAM and I only have the necessary programs working whenever I play, so basically Windows is the only other memory hog and Norton, but that only uses 30K. And with normally 600K kB being used by CoX, 2 gigs is more than enough for me. I barely ever crash. BARELY EVER! So, please do not come with the suggestion to buy more RAM. This entry is not about my RAM nor my computer. It's about the game using up almost twice as much as usual and the suspicion why others tend to crash because of that same reason (but then of course from the usage of memory on their own computer ^^

Quote:Hyper is correct. That's if you connect using USB 1.1. Which hasn't been the standard for quite a while. Just simply make sure the enclosure/cable/your computer is capable of utilizing USB 2.0 and you won't have any issues.I was understanding, from this thread, that a USB connection would offer mind-numbingly slow transfer speeds?
Just to put things into perspective...
I stream all of my media (Music, Videos, Pictures etc) off of my external drive without so much as even a hiccup. That's including hi definition files. A few days ago I had to drop my music collection (Which is approximately 16gigs) on a laptop, and the transfer ran at around 26MB/second. A 50MB file takes approximately 2 seconds.
I hope that puts things into perspective for you
