Toon picture replaced by a chat box picture

Hi, sorry if there's a thread or question about this issue already, tried to find an earlier thread but found none.

So my problem has been for a quite a while that my toon pictures are replaced by a picture of the chat box (down left corner of the screen) everywhere; I.D, costume selection, basically everywhere with a picture of the current toon. Earlier it worked ok, with the same graph card but apparently (?) some issue update messed it up. It works also fine when I log on from my friend's pc.

My graph card is Ati Radeon HD 3850, OS Win XP. I've checked and re-checked the settings for Ati's from this forum, tried updating drivers. I reported the bug, but got no reply whatsoever. Ofc this does not affect my game play much but it would be nice to see the pics when changing the cossie... :>

So I'd be very thankful for any suggestion or ideas

You don't get Customer Service's attention to fix a problem with a bug report... you do that with a petition.

Could you give us a screen shot of the problem? http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Screenshot

Then please post the results of these two programs:

  • CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
  • HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

I had littlebit similar problem, but it mystically disappeared. I have earlier model of ATI card. I had strange water effect bug too (something other graphics in water) and that window bug at same time. Sadly I have no clue how they fixed. I propably disabled some effects from craphics card options. I'm sure the bugs are still there but just hiding

Still my game works littlebit choppy but it changes to smooth after a few missions. I think theres some connection between those behavior.

edit. oh yeah and editing base crashes the game.

Psychobabe, are you using a Non-US version of Windows XP? That would explain why it can't access the registry and the strange dates shown on the drivers.

Since you are running an ATI video card and CoH Helper is unable to access the registry to show us your ingame video settings, please set your Catalyst Control Center and ingame settings to those listed in the first post of Bill Z Bubba's stickied ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations thread.

At the bottom of that post is a good guide to use to uninstall and reinstall video drivers cleanly. I'd recommend using DriverSweeper instead of Driver Cleaner since Driver Cleaner is no longer free. Make sure you are installing the newest driver for your video card so that it is up to date.

Let us know if that resolves the issues for you. Someone else may have a recommendation from the HJT log. I'd recommend stopping the SnoopFree program to see if that could be causing some of the problem.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Some things to try:

1. Delete checksum.coh from your CoH directory. Reboot. Run the updater and let it reverify files.

2. Go to your computer's manufacturer's website and see if there's driver updates for your motherboard chipset/CPU.

3. In the updater, click on Safe Mode and see if it still does it. If it doesn't, then it's one of the graphic's settings that's at fault.

Always something wrong with the computer?
Honestly if it had no problems before the patching and didn't exhibit these problems before hand then something in the game itself is sending the wrong signals to the graphics card.

I've had issues recently myself where my ID pic ends up being something else entirely (one time ended up being a clothing texture for the T-shirt) But has never had this problem when I started playing again and yes, before you ask, the drivers ARE up to date and so are all patches and updates to my operating system. Which is indiciative of a memory leak within the software causing certain objects and textures to get placed in the wrong areas or leaking into other texture calls.

Sometimes its not always the computer thats at fault.

What tends to fix this is restarting the game client entirely. However if its really bad and moves to something else, deleting the checksum.coh file or just re-installing it entirely may be a good option.

Not to sound like a jerk, but yes. It's almost always the computers fault. But not in the way you think....

Updates generally fix things. Sometimes when something is fixed with the game, it allows for a bug between the OS/Drivers/Hardware and the game to surface. The majority of the time the issue lies with a driver and either a botched install or a corrupt file. As you can see from the CoH Helper log above, there is very clearly an issue with the registry and it's ability to inform the rest of the system of correct information.

Although I do understand where you're coming from, it's safe to assume that it's the computer/drivers/OS right off the bat. Until proven otherwise of course. The reason this type of mentality exists is because it's a fact that at the very absolute least 90% of the time the issue is with the computer, not the game.

We'll see....

I just hate "End all, Be All" Comments Always give a option. You cannot IMAGINE how many times I've had a issue with something only to be greeted in google search with a couple hundred, "Oh its your drivers" , "You sure your running it right?".
*spits* Yeah, somethin that was working just fine 5 seconds ago MUST be my drivers causing the issue. And when I do something specific and it's repeatable, my video card MUST be broken.

Not saying you are like this flameshot, this is just the general mentality across the board, the easy answer and then let the topic get buried. I like to dig a bit. So forgive me that much (Been a tech rep for about 7 years)

Honestly I think its a bit of both, the games memory leak and the sub-standard video card. The game is sending instructions to the card and then starts dribbling more and more things that were left-over instructions or other graphic caching confusing the card, causing textures, objects to over-lap.

Worst case scenario, the card is reaching the end of its lifespan.
Welp, the card is pretty old anyway and a decent budget gaming card can be pretty cheap and still provide some good quality.

(I remember when I was setting up a rig... the difference between integrated video and a $35.00 budget card was MASSIVE!) So it might be time for a change anyway

Hi,

Thanks all for tips & advice and sorry for the late reply. I tried graphics settings and your suggestions but sadly there was no help. What finally sorted it out was reinstalling Windows (not the game), no idea why but the pictures finally work properly.

Just out of curiosity. If you do a CoH Helper log, does it show all of the settings correctly now? Because if it does, then the probable culprit was a corrupt registry.
