Well, im not a Min/Maxer when it comes to the typical factors.I build my Characters for fun, and unlike the majority of players running around, I can make any combonation tollerable, well built, and well played.
As for going the route of a Pure Min/Maxer, no, not one bit.If I like a Power Set combonation, I try to make it work, and if I cant, atleast I tried.(Hasnt happened yet.)
If anything, my builds pretty much wow people, (most players dont care in general, but there are times someone notices im not a common build and asks tons of questions, or gives me props) and go agenst a typical Min/Maxer.However, I am somewhat of a Min/Maxer because of 1 thing, and that is the capability to properly building, slotting, and using various tactics on any given build that I decide to play that really makes the combo shine, where others belive its worthless.
If your on Freedom, and see a Earth/Sonic Controller running around, or a Fire/Fire Tanker, or even a Mind/Cold Controller running around, odds are, thats me.
My current builds comprise of the following.
Defender - Dark/Dark
Controller - Earth/Sonic
Controller - Mind/Cold
Controller - Ice/TA
Tanker - Fire/Fire
Scrapper - Claws/Invln
Stalker - Elec/Energy - No Assassin Strike, High AoE Damage,High Recharge build.Surprisingly Powerful.
None of which, from what iv been reading, classify as builds a Min/Maxer would choose, for any reason, ever.
I do however have a extreem amount of fun playing with combos that no one else will touch.
The bottom line, is theres Min/Maxers out there that only play what is the top notch veiwed numbers in any given build, then theres people like my self, that play whatever they feel like playing, but pay attention to how to play, build, and use the powers they have chosen, and then theres the mast majority of players, that will attempt to copy the before mentioned Numerical Min/Maxers, because they are sheep and dont really know how to be individuals in the first place.
Best example is when someone comes on the scene with the name Electro-Shield, or Techno-Thunder, or even Lightning Shield, and they are SD/Elec Scrappers. They are the ones Copying the Numeric Min/Maxers, and are rather obvious to spot a mile away.(iv seen all 3 of these names in the same area, not a embellishment)
To the OP : Your veiwing copy-cats, who piggy back the builds the Numerically Obsessed Min/Maxers make, making it seem like theres alot of Min/Maxers, when there really isnt.
To the Numerically Obsessed Min/Maxers : Not a single problem wrong with your method, its just widely copied by what we all know as, "Bad Players".
To People like me : Keep truckin on and making people raise a eyebrow with a unothidox combo, and bad spelling! -
From seeing it in person, and not personally having one.(Yet)
Id say its a extreemly flexible build, in team, or solo.
It does a hecktic amount of damage with the before mentioned powers you have up there.
Flash Fire + Poison Gas = GOOD!
Fire Imps Containment Damage? No, they dont, in fact, no pet in the controller Primaries does Containment Damage.
I think im going to make one, I like the concept I can have with it. -
Quote:I can see your woes with being back up for a slow Tanker, but youv never teamed with a real Fire/Fire/Pyre Tanker. With, or without your buffs, they can whipe mobs faster then any Tanker you normally play with.(Thats not counting SD/Elec Tankers.)This... But I happen to love my fire/kin. I just finished a build I can team with. My solo build helped me afford this... I really dig the play style. It's a challenging set in that holds usually come from the immob and stun rather than one "hold". What I find amazing, is that people love fire/kins and want them on the team, but then waste what they do best by chaining them to buffbot/speed boost so the slow *** tank can clear...
Both builds/versions of my kin play differently. One doesn't need the rest of the team, and the other hides behind the tank in a traditional controller back up. You're better off not being on that team... Usually those teams want you to play a certain way, will tell you when you are 'wrong' and are blind to better ways of doing it...
A well made and played Pure Fire Tanker can jam out some fugly damage, and can drop mobs almost as fast, if not faster, (Depending on how well built it is.) as a Fire/Kin.
I personally could never bring my self to make a Fire/Kin, mainly becuase so many people use it, have it, and im sick and tired of seeing them for the most part.
Theres plenty of other things out there that can do massive damage and map clearing, and theres other things that cant clear as fast, but cant dish out the massive damage of a Fire/Kin, a Fire/Fire Tank, or whatever you choose to do so with.I personally think, that if your Controller can wipe a map while on a 8 man team, forget about the slow Tankers feelings.Thats the way iv delt with it in the past on my Tanker.
Random Invln/Axe Tank says to me, "Your Fire Armor, so it would be best to let me take the Alpha."
My Tankers response, .....none, I didnt respond, I just took point anyhow, and would trash the mob the moment I jumped in.Even con'd Minions Dropped within my first attack, which was Fire Sword Circle after the use of my BU + Fiery Embrace.LTs would drop after a combustion and then a Fire Breath after doing a slight ajustment for angle.
After watching this, the other Tanker acctually jumped in, and started attacking the bosses, and with a combonation of his ST attacks, my own ST attacks, and the teams Blaster after my first 3 attacks, the mob was dead.
I smirked at that point, and ran into the next mob, and began yet another assault. The other Tanker repeats that he should take point.I still responded, with absolutly nothing.
After 2 more times of him trying to tell me to let him be the Alpha Tank, he stopped bothering, and we completed the mission in a rather fast fashion. After the mission, he dropped team, and started broadcasting for another team, and no one complained that he left.
My point is, dont bother with pandering to that Tank if its a known Stand and Deliver Slow Killing Tanker.Just annyalate the map anyhow.Pointless to allow your self to be played second fiddle.
To the OP, many people play a Fire/Kin because they like speed, and have little, to no patience when it comes to farming, and I cant say I blame them.If you had to stare at the same mobs day after day, id want them dead quick too.
I just perfer other ATs and builds to get that job done. -
Quote:Agree on this issue.EM was overpowered in the upfront ST burst department, especially noticeably so in PvP. Castle then balanced it more inline with the other sets. Now people compare it to how it was and think it is overly gimped. Overall I basically don't find my EM any worse off to my SS etc. There are many different attributes and across the different powersets, cost per attributes vary, so you will/can be well/better off in some area, at times. People tend to only notice ST damage output over a small amount of time rather than other attributes.
I am not saying there couldn't be tweaks, I thought with the last changes perhaps Whirling Hands could recharge sooner to balance out the whole of the set with other sets better but apparently that is fine.
If anything, EM does just fine for the jobs it can handle. As I made mention earlier in this post, you can go for Recharge on Whirling Hands, and take Hasten.
By the math, your going to end up doing some decent Damage if you treat WH like you would Spin from the Claws set that Scrappers and Brutes use.
As for slow animations?Hmmm, lets think on this one.I can point out 1-2 slow animation powers in just about every Tanker Melee set.
Now reguarding peoples gripe about how EM got nerfed hardcore, I never played with it before it was nerfed in the first place, the thought of Pink Pom Poms made me stay away from it!
From what iv been experiancing, and what iv seen, there aint a single thing wrong with the set, and cant give any opinion on how tweaking it would be anything useful. -
Quote:That puts Mind/Cold ahead by 1 Vote vs all the other builds.Put me down for Mind/Cold as it's a combo I've been curious to try myself.
I would also like to add, that ill be posting how the build plays out after this, so curiosity is a good as reason as any to vote for a build. -
New Votes?Holy Cow!This could get complicated!
Thats now 2 new Combos added to the mix on Votes, instead of 1.
2 Ice/TA
2 Fire/TA
2 Mind/Cold
2 Mind/TA
1 Plant/TA
1 Grav/TA
We are starting to have a Dead Heat on 4 builds out of 6, time to start debating guys!
Keep in mind, I promised to play this build. So make it gooooooood! -
As a expert Fire/ Tanker, I can honestly say, that Fire Armor takes a diffrent playing style then the average, stand and deliver Tank builds.
The main reason why Fire/ has such a bad rap, is mainly due to the lack of understanding how to play it by most melee players.Especially Tankers.
Heres the skinny on it.
The average Tanker is commonly someone who requires a set that allows them to sit still, and take alot of damage, while having a equally lacking melee set for that Tanker.A example of that is someone who made a Invulnerablity/Super Strength Tanker.Super Strength is a really good melee set for Tanks, then there are other builds like Willpower/War Mace, and so on.
All the common Tanker builds serve a purpose, but lack any jaw dropping punch, like a Fire/ Tanker does.I used to play a Fire/Fire Tanker before, and I can honestly tell you, that no other Tanker can match its raw damage.(Except maybe a Lightning Melee Tank.)
Your going to hear things like "No Midigation", and "Lack of secondary effect other then damage." when it comes to these sets.Dont let that phase you, or effect you.Your a Fire Tanker, not to be confused with a Tanker that can sit back and take the beating, while others do the damage.
As for the idea of slotting for possitional Def %?In your case, im sure that wont effect your character too badly, being Ice Melee and all, so its prolly not so bad of a deal considering alot of your melee damage will be sub-par with most others you could have matched up with Fire/, but, thats only until you get Ice Patch, and Burn.
On a Fire/Fire Tanker, your sacrificing your offense, to get possitional Def %s, that have absolutly no reason to be on that Tanker.Majority of players who go the route of Slotting for Def % on a Fire/ Tanker, are still in the same mind set that a Fire/ Tank is like every other Tank, which would be very wrong.
Think of it in the same asspect of a Blaster, that goes with AR/Dev, instead of Fire/EM, or any other kind of Combonation that is like the Fire/EM build.
The AR/Dev Blaster can handle diffrent situations, and can play extreemly diffrent compaired to a Fire/EM.The Fire/EM runs in, nuking away, and with any luck, wont face plant from it.The AR/Dev however, can set up a couple Step Mines and Catrops while in Stealth, Sniper a Target, back up, watch many of the mob fall down from the bomb blasts, use Full Auto, and pump away with his AoEs, and most likly drop the mob, dodging the Alpha entirly.
They are both good Blasters, with major playing style diffrences. The same way a Fire/ Tanker is vs most, if not all other Tanker armor sets.
My experiance on my old Fire/Fire was the feeling like a Blaster with Armor Toggles and a Self Heal.Playing this Tanker correctly, the mobs dead way faster then if you threw a typical Tank into it.The Double BUs, very high AoE damage that it is capable of doing, and Self Heal make it a very easy to use Tank. Not to mention the high damage from its ST attacks, allows a Team to steam roll missions.
The typical Tank player, plays a Tanker, simply because you dont have to pay much attention while in a mob.You can litterally jump into a mob, start hitting your attack keys, and look away and watch Star Trek, or That 70s Show, without worrying about dying most the time.Which is how im sure many Tanker players play the game.(Many make mention of it, and have done the same on certain Tank builds on a Team.)
A Fire Tank, requires your Attention, and if you treat it like a Live Grenade, itll do way better then you belive it will. Its the Blaster of Tanks, except it's not shooting a Fireball, it's the Fireball!(Well, technically, you can still get the Pyre Epic Pool and get Fireball, but you get the idea.)
The best way I have found to IO a Fire Tank, is to give it Global Recharge, Accuracy, Regen, and Recovery. It needs nothing more then that.Well, maybe a Knockback IO or 2 couldnt hurt.
This is just my take on it. -
Quote:Ok, just made 26.... holy cow this is a great combo. With Ignite and Flamethrower I can easily dispatch mobs and move onto the next group... and this is with -2 SOs!
Muhhuahahahahahaha!!
Looks like I may be making a second Controller. It'll prolly end up with TA as a secondary.
The Combonation is being voted on right now, come join the fun! -
Iv got a better answer then the previous one for the OP, on his issues teaming with other controllers.
Make your own teams, and be the only Controller on them.Problem Solved.
Your Welcome, in advance. -
Frickin Schweeeeeeet!
No Agro for the -res damage Aura!
YEAH BABY! -
So far the votes are.
2 Ice/TA
2 Fire/TA
2 Mind/Cold
1 Plant/TA
1 Grav/TA
Lets keep em comming. -
Ok, I have a couple questions.
The comments been made that you get your damage in the Earth Control set when you get your Golem.Does it really hit that hard?Cuase im noticing that my Damaging Attacks dont do much Damage, however im sure the damage improves with getting more powers to layer over the last.
One of you made mention of having a Fire/TA Controller.I have some questions on that. The main one on my mind, is when you light Oil Slick, does it just desimate the enemy mob you have locked down?
I have no idea the damage of Oil Slick. Is it Slow Ticks with high damage?Low Damage and fast clicks, but cuasing alot of DoT?
I know that the obvious Fire Control attacks can start the Oil Slick, but is there anything else in your secondary that can start it as well?
I want to go either Ice/TA, or Mind/Cold, so im curious if theres anything in TA that can start the oil Slick on fire?I think its a bit fair to say ice wont start a fire!LOL!I want to avoid a Fire/TA if I can, even though the Oil Slick question on damage does seem tempting if its decent, that and the Sonic Arrow, and others would make it fun to help it along.
If something else I have can set off the Slick if I go Ice Primary, then ill be happy to go Ice/TA....or Mind/Cold.....I hate making up my mind...
I have 5 possible combos on the table, ill let you guys tell me which is rarer.
The choices are.
Ice/TA
Mind/Cold
Mind/TA
Grav/TA
Fire/TA (Only if Ice/TA doesnt have a viable option to light Oil Slick, and if it does, then this is not on the list.)
If you guys come up with a more interesting and rare combo, toss it up there with your vote, ill let this ride for a few days before checking back on what you guys voted on.
This will be the first time ill have ever done this, but, ill create the combo everyone agrees on, and play it without a complaint. You guys can pick for me, if you like.
Good Luck, be back to see what you guys think I should play in a few days.(or till my Earth/Sonic dings atleast 35, which will take a few days of casual soloing anyhow.) -
Quote:OUUUUCH!A poorly played Grav/FF is a nighmare to have on a team. I had the misfortune to be teamed with one on Justice (who has since been one starred and ignored).
You can entirely shut down your own team while allowing the mobs to destroy them.
You have the ability to teleport entire spawns of baddies away from the aggro controlling Tanks and Scrappers and on top of the squishies (blasters, defenders, other controllers) in the back. If you slot no stun enhancers in Wormhole the baddies wake up fairly quickly especially if they are higher con. You can also wormhole parts of the minotaur spawn in the first mission of the ITF (defeating all of which is required to finish the mission) off of the top of the mountain and into the water making finding those scattered mobs nearly impossible.
Running force bubble 100% of the time means that any melee focused toon will be forced outside the protection of your dispersion bubble in order to attack baddies.
Force bubble also lets you spread the spawn radially around the team and allows you to quickly and easily push mobs out of debuff patches.
Improper use of Force Bolt allows you to send the debuff anchor far far from the rest of the spawn.
Having both Dimension Shift AND Detention Field allows you to make defeat alls nearly impossible for your team to finish in a timely manner.
Pushing stuff around with force bubble and then popping PFF and watching the team wipe is something you do every 10 minutes or so just to shake things up.
Oh and don't forget to take the ally shields but never use them on the team. -
Im no stranger to Controllers, so ill chirp in on this one.
I can agree with diffrent playing styles, or that the iPod, TV watching, Cheetoes covered fingers of a mindless player can be part of the problem, but by no means is it done to offend anyone, or tick them off.(Atleast one would hope not.)
As someone who Solo's alot, rather then teaming, mainly because the team IQ and Co-operation now days is about as low as Swamp Fungi, I definatly take the AoE Hold, and slot that puppy for as much Recharge as possible, because I solo at +0/8 w/bosses, to +1/8 w/bosses at my lowest solo settings.Hasten, is also taken to help it along.FoTM my rear! That power is down right needed on some builds and power sets!
As for popular Controller builds?I dont make them, or use the power sets.
I purposely go off and use the lesser used power sets because they are way less travelled, and way more useful then people say they are.
My favorite controller Right now is a Earth/Sonic, and im working on a second one that be just as fun for me to play with. Not sure if its a Mind/TA, or a Mind/Cold yet, havnt made up my mind on the secondary.
My point is, to the OP, many players dont know they are stepping on your toes.Iv had this issue before, and iv stopped for a moment to tell them "Hey, when you see me doing this, try not to do this.Because <incert reason> is happening when you do.", acctually works better then saying nothing at all and blowing up about it. -
Quote:Damn, should I leave you 2 love birds alone for a while?Untrue. A quick look at my posting history will show otherwise. As for Harkness...not really worth a response. Pretty spiteful for a poster who I'm fairly sure I've helped with a couple of builds already.

Quote:Fire, I respect your opinions on mids, IOs, builds, and whatnot, but you don't really need to bring them out in every thread you post in when it doesn't really have anything to do with the thread topic. Everyone has their pet peeves and things that annoy them, but we ought to keep them on a leash most of the time if we don't want all the threads to devolve into arguments.
Understood, ill work on it. -
Quote:Ok, you almost made a point.....Till you wrote this..I mean, if you were going to make the daughter of say Magneto and Storm, you arent going to want her to suck are you. Especially since she is supposedly the offspring of 2 class 4 mutants or whatever.
This right here shows me that I offended your none creative, and none curious nature.I do apologize for that, but I think people that use Mids to "Map out a Character", lack any imagination, creativity, and lack the ability to have the uncertainty of dicovering/creating something on your own.Its not a building Blue Print of a Mall is it?
While it is Valid to tell me this isnt the post for this kind of Debate, I will agree with that.It was something thats been eating at me for a while, and unlike most people in society, it just comes tummbling out when it bothers me.Opening someones Mid print out, and seeing nothing but that on the screen, is a waste of my time to open that page to see the post in question has no acctual body to it.Just a Mids print out wait for approval of someone else using Mids that has no real idea of how to slot the power sets, cause its always the same old thing.
You see a Resiatance or Regen based power set....Mid users answer is almost always "IO it with Def %.", which doesnt really make much sense to cripple the rest of the builds offensive capabilities just to have moderate Def %.THATS a whole diffrent argument in its self that i wont get into.
I havnt met one person thats used mids and IOd a build as well as I have another player that doesnt use mids.Theres a huge diffrence in mantality between the 2. -

Quote:Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....i can't imagine trying to actually level an FF toon without PLing.
I think you should do mind/ta
Trick Arrow is one of the most underrated sets in the game. it has such a great array of debuffs, it also gives you a second single target hold for boss stacking and whatnot. -
Quote:Hmmm, if that is the case, then im sure theres a way around it.Im not totally sure that having it on a pet will grant me agro, unless the mechanic for this power changed.Last time I saw this power used was 2 years ago on a Defender that had it on a Tank, and recived no agro for his using that field. It's not a matter of fear, I have several toons with no real heal. From my controllers at 50 my Ill/TA and Plant/Storm both can't heal. I built my Earth as thermal to be an AV killer which he does very well.
Also IIRC the disruption aura will cause aggro to be drawn to you. Granted I believe this only affects pets as my only /Sonic toon is my Fire/Sonic corr, I yet to test this with pets.
If the Pet acts as a Agro Tanker, like you suggjessted it does, then theres no huge issue. -
Quote:This is a mix iv acctualy been wanting to try.I acctually think TA/ on a Defender/Corruptor/Controller is awesome.Everyone screams thats its weak.....WRONG!Indeed. I plan on (eventually) slowing them with Glue Arrow, gaining 30% extra damage with Acid and Disruption Arrows, and burning entire spawns into oblivion with Oil Slick and Ignite/Flamethrower.
The idea of forcing a boss to stand there and burn... just makes all that sound EVEN BETTER!
I personally love Assualt Rifle, but I dont use it because im conflicted on what to pair with it, and the AT doesnt really matter for me.Should I go Traps?or Force Fields?or Devices?or Trick Arrows?!or...or...or.....BLARG!
See what I mean?I end up curled into a ball in the corner rocking back and forth sucking my thumb because I cant decide!
The major of my issue, is that im not one to repeat a power, reguardless of the AT.I just dont wanna take the same set I just took to 50 again.I mean, you hear of people talking about taking there Invln/SS Tanker to level 50, and then a Fire/SS, then a Elec/SS, and then WP/SS.....You get the picture im sure.To me, thats Dull.
Then theres those who go off and tell you to pick a power set EVERYONE uses.Like Kinetics, or Empathy, or Radiant Aura. That yours is a....and I quote..."Epic Fail".I never listen to anyone that uses L33t sP34k, or the Words Epic or Fail by them selves, or put together. They have no idea if a power set is bad, because they want what they see everyone have.
The worste kinds for me, and im sure many people will attack me for this, is Min/Maxers, and Mids users. Its a point of interest when someone titles a "Making a <incert build here>", and I want to go see possibly there Theme for it, or why they think itll be a interesting mix, or anything towards asking if the mix will work well, and in what way?has anyone played this before?Thats what I exspect.
However, the reality is totally diffrent...
"Here is my new build, read the Mids Print up and tell me what you think."
That to me, tells me people just want whats mathmatically strongest, WITH IOs!
News flash people!IOs arent required to play the game, and the game wasnt made harder because of there arrival. Its a waste of time and effort to Mids up a Character that you havnt even created yet, or carried past level 1, and even worse yet, have no idea if the Mids IO drawn up will make that build any better.
Iv seen people who use Mids fudge up a Tanker so bad, that my old SOs Tankers out perform them. Some people should just not use Mids. -
Well, thats a tough one to answer really.
I do see most people going on to play Brutes, and retire Tankers, but then again, maybe not.
If I had to choose a Tanker to go Red Side, it would have to be a Ice/Ice/Ice Tanker, or my Favorite of the bunch, a Fire/Fire/Pyre Tanker.
Not that anyone else will agree, but I veiw a pure Ice Tanker as Villian power sets.I mean seriously, think about it.Your making it freezing cold, stabbing your enemies with pointy shards of ice with icicles, then trying to hack them to death with razor sharp swords made of rock hard ice.
That sounds like alot of punishment and torture, and its not commonly over quickly!Thats Frickin EVIL!!
Now, as for the Pure Fire Tank that id bring over to the dark side, Its mainly because its the most obseen damage iv ever done on a Tanker. When I can jump in like a blaster doing a double BU, and setting off FSC, Combustion, and Fireball, thats alot of AoE Fire Damage at Capped Tanker Damage!(I have a couple Brutes, but I dont always like chasing a Fury Bar.)
Not to mention the hard hitting ST attacks that Fire Melee has, and Fire Breath is a very long range, wide, and easy to set up cone for nice additional damage to the mob.
Not to boast to big about a Fire Tanker, but when I attack, and those large numbers come up all over the mob when I attack, it does give other tankers and scrappers pause.
It doesnt compair to a 3/4 Fury Bar, or close to full for that matter if the Brute has a AoE or 2, but the slightly diffrent Fire Melee Set on a Tanker makes it more enjoyable for me.That and the fact everyone sceams that its squishy, and find out everythings dead to quickly to worry about it.
Themaitcally, These would be my top choices. -
Quote:Very true, but the OP just wanted a option to hold them there for Ignite.Im pretty sure its common knowledge to anyone that reads the powers in there power sets, the obvious effects that you and I already know.dont forget the added tar patch for -resist goodness +slows and -jump/fly so they have to run out
-
Hmmm, I think from what im reading right now, that Mind/ and /Cold are rather unused./TA, as well as /FF are seemingly even more unused for a Controller.
On a side note, I should have mentioned that by having a Earth/Sonic, I dont want to reuse those sets.Redundancies in using power sets dont appeal to me, and doesnt make me wanna play the secondary Controller to stave off boredum from the other one all that much.So that takes Earth/TA and Earth/FF off the list.
Mind/Cold might be interesting, but im sure more options exist. -
Yes, you can.
Traps will allow it if you use Web Grenade. If you slot up for max recharge and max Immob duration, its all gravy.Your wish is Granted.
Dark Miasma will allow you to use your Dark Servants petrifying gaze to that effect on Bosses, and before that, Petrifying Gaze its self.Again, your wish is granted.
Im sure there might be other ways for a diffrent Secondary to do the same thing, but, those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Enjoy!
