Quote:You really tried a tough one (Ms Lib) and one that cutted your DPS in half (Arch-A). =P
While neither of these ventures were met with success, it did leave me confident that it would be possible to solo an AV with this toon. Although I must admit that I did pop a few insps here and there, so with that in mind it seems a little less impressive.
While it's less impressive, it's how pretty much everyone started. First one i beat was Mynx, with a shivan and a full tray of tier2-3 insps. I was really happy and impressed. Later. i managed to kill some with only the shivans and a little insps, or with only major use of insps. Then a new brute managed to solo one without any...but it only worked on one AV. Now, more then a year and half after the first, i have one that took a bunch of AVs (one at the time) without any!
So soloing AVs with a normal melee build, even with using insps is pretty good!
For GMs... can't help you, i stick to melee. =P -
Quote:Sorry Dechs!First, it's Dechs. Pronounced "dex." Notably not short for "Dexter."
The only thing I am saying is: you won't ever find a Dark Armor brute as tough as my Dark Armor tank. Tanks will always be better at holding aggro and staying alive than brutes with the same powersets/budget. That's not debatable.
But the fact remains that tanks will not replace brutes and brutes will not replace tanks.
I aggree with you, a good tanker will always be better then a good brute for holding aggro/staying alive. Wether it's needed depends on the team make up and players preference.
And i don't see brutes or tankers being eliminated. It will just make the players that hate brute or tanker happier, while still having the two around. =) -
Quote:If you stick with the same primary/secondary though, i don't think an IOed tanker can reach the SOed brute damage.I'd question that. Some IOed tankers can reach 140, 150, 160, 170 ST DPS. AoE output isn't bad either although harder to objectively quantify (i.e., 2x Rage Footstomp + Fireball). I'd argue the damage output a IOed out SD/SS/Fire tanker can reach is most likely higher than what most, if not all SO brutes will ever be able to.
If you change the primary/secondary, then an IOed dark/stone brute is probably sturdier then even an IOed fire/EM tanker for exemple. =P -
That's assuming Dech started the conversation...but he was quoting someone.
Quote:Dechs' tank is IOed out to the hilt.
Comparing IOed to SOed is stupid. If you are going to compare what can be made tougher, if you don't do it on common ground it is meaningless.
1) Is an SO tanker enough for the game? Yes. The game is based on SO (so far) and a good team of SOed characters can do pretty much anything.
2) Is an IOed brute as sturdy as an SOed tanker? Yes.
Therefor, combining 1) and 2), an IOed brute is good enough to play the role of tanker, in the same way as an SOed tanker can for a normal team.
Of course an IOed tanker is sturdier then an IOed brute... but he's also sturdier then a SOed tanker. Does that mean we have to kick all SOed tanker because they aren't IOed? no. -
In term of exp or rewards? No.
But the same can be said about PvP (before there was PvP IOs), badging, writing a bio, choosing a good name, making costumes, RPing, etc. Yet a lot of people find that very interesting and worth it.
You'll have to figure out or try it to know if it's worth it to you. Depending on what AT you'd want for soloing AV, i'd suggest you try it with already existing characters. Using insps and temps, a lot of characters can do it, even if not build for it. (well, the weaker AVs at least) With time, pratice and better build character, you'll be able to stop using insps and temps.
One thing to consider though, is that if you want a def/corr/mm/etc AV soloer, he'll also be extremely powerfull in team. Someone who can kill AV/GM alone, will be a huge help against LR, Statesman or Reischman. -
Quote:And the meaning of "with IOs you can make a brute as strong as a tanker" is that:He was referring to someone making the "with IOs you can make a brute as strong as a tanker" comment.
And no, you cannot make an IOed Dark Armor brute as sturdy as an IOed Dark Armor tank. Sorry, but you can't.
An IOed brute can be as sturdy as an SOed tanker.
It was never question about IO brute vs IO tanker. "A tanker" is an SOed tanker, since that's the dev's mesurement of balance and challenge in this game.
The debate is that IOed brute can be as tough as SOed tanker.
But IOed tanker won't do as much damage as an SOed brute. -
Quote:Is your tanker IOed? Cause i'm sure there is /dark IOed brutes that are a lot sturdier then an SOed dark/ tank. Because that's what he was referring to. =PI dare you to make a Dark Armor brute that can tank as well as my Dark Armor tank.
With IOs, you can make a brute as sturdy as a tanker. And by the definition of the dev and the balance, a "tanker" is one without IOs. -
Quote:They are just using a different methodes then you. It's not any more rude then someone braodcasting that he's looking for more in his team. Just like you having to read all the tells, if i'm in a zone, i'll have to read all the useless LFM broadcasts even if i'm not looking for a team.I am annoyed by people who assume that I want them on my team.
Here's the bottom line: If you do not know that a team is looking for more and you ask to join, you're doing it wrong.
If a team broadcasts that it is looking for more, then it is not rude to ask to join the team.
If I'm looking to fill a team, and you have your LFT flag up, I'll ask. If your flag is down or your message indicates you're not interested, I won't ask. Because I am polite and respect the wishes of others.
When you ask to join a team without knowing if it is looking, you're basically walking down the street, knocking on doors until someone lets you in. You cannot convince me that is an action that is respectful of others.
I know i hate a lot seeing someone LFM more then once. Even if i just "hear" him once between each missions, eventually i'll only see that message on my screen. Typing a quick "no sorry" whenever someone want me to join there team or they want to join my team? No problem at all. And if i'm too busy, i'll just don't answer or when i'm done.
Considering it's "virtue the unofficial RP server", it could be said that it's even more rude to broadcast, since some people might be interrupted in there RP session. They could always remove broadcast from there chatbox.... but so could you with your tells. Don't want to miss an important tell? Same thing can be said about an important broadcast for the other guy. =P
Basically, it's like the "do you remove your hat or keep it when you enter a church" question. For some religion it's rude to have no hat, for some it's rude to keep it. Unlike the churches though....you can't know what kind of team searching methode Smersh likes... unless you put it in your search comment.
So not rude at all, unless it's in your search comment.
edit: I didn't read the full 6 pages. I'm quoting this, but it seems to be the general idea in many of your first posts.
Also... my point doesn't include multiple tell from the same person. If someone doesn't answer you or answer negatively, then continuing to ask is rude. -
I'm just curious, probably cause I'd still dream of a STF/LRSF where each player is a melee one and they each do a dual vs one AV. =P So the question comes in two part!
1) What's the highest conning AV that was soloed? +2,+3,+4,etc? Is it just a once in a life time deal against a "weak" AV, or you can repeat it on a few different AVs?
2) Anyone managed to solo the strongest AVs out there... like Stateman and Honoree. The ones that have lots of attacks, non-crashing godmodes and other tricks.
Must be a scrapper/brute/stalker to participate.
With or without insps? Make sure to mention.
Did you used minions to boost invincibility/RTTC/souldrain/etc?
For my answers...
1) +0 maybe one +1 but i seriously doubt it.
2) Biggest without insps would be Citadel i think or Wretch. But it's still not the really big shots. -
Quote:I've heard that technically, we only use 10% of our brain, at one time. But we use all of it, depending on what parts we need. Not sure if it's true but it would end the "we can become gods" myth. o_oWe only use around 10% of our brain power and if we learnd to use more brain power and unlocked mental abilities...Will we be considered Mutants?
No we wouldn't be mutants, since every human could do it. :0 -
In CoH, EVERY human have potential for psychic abilities. It's just higher for some people and no everyone get the trainning. That's why the PPPs also have psychic powers at higher level.
Aside from that, they only have "natural human" powers.
P.S. What you described, getting powers after an experiement, that's science origin. Mutants are born with there powers. (but they are "unique" among there race) -
Quote:If tanking is your goal, your damage doesnt really matter.Piggy-backing this thread: I thought that DM/SD had the highest ST DPS at the moment, so I'm surprised to see less recommendations for that. Is it because SD falls down in PvP or because ST attacks work poorly for tanking?
It's not suggested a lot here because a lot of brutes prefer to beat huge spawns or farm. If you go to the scrapper forums, it comes up a lot more. -
Quote:The most commons are WP and Shield, while for primary, i pretty much see them all equaly. But i'm sure i've seen any combo possible (excluding APP/pools). The reason why some are less frequent? Because they aren't as good in a min/max way, or less intuitive to find a concept for....ok.
Since I am an optimist, and believe in the business acumen of the Devs, let's just assume that it works with Shields. SD is very popular and a very fun set, I can't think of any reason to disallow the shiny new melee set from the crowd favorite.
Making that (hopefully safe) assumption, how many of those 76 flavors of scrappers do you see around? Are there any that are disproportionately common? Any that are exceptionally rare?
If so, why so?
Here's a common one: I have not seen a fighting pool-free scrapper in ages. Does that mean the fighting pool is too good for scrappers? Do the less taken pools (like presence) need a boost for scrappers?
How about some of the odder combos out there, like claws/fire? I don't remember ever seeing a claw/fire scrapper, and yet that combo should be RIDICULOUS for damage.
Why aren't they out there more?
Just curious, is all.
You don't see much claws/fire because shield gives a lot more damage then /fire and fire or elec gives more damage then claws (i think... there's no clear way to decide best aoe damage)
Fighting is a lot commun for scrapper, because it boost one of there two fonctions. Damage, we already have enough and the pools pretty much don't help for that. (assault beeing the exception but costing lots of endurance for little.) On the other hand, protection can be easily gained and scrappers are far from the cap for msot part. And the closer you get to the cap, the bigger the effect. (s/l from 50% top 70% for exemple makes you last 66% longer for a 20% bonus, from 40% to 45% def, you last 100% longer, for a 5% bonus)
I don't see it being a problem. The pools cover very different roles (travel, protection, support, mitgation, healing, less downtime). Some things are a lot less in demand, but are still taken. If we wanted to make them more popular, we'd need to boost them too much, wich would cause problems with the ATs it's actually used a lot or would be just ridiculous.
For exemple, the traval pools are less taken now that there is ninja run. One way to make them popular again, would be to make the travel powers even faster! But it would be ridiculous if SS' max speed got boosted X3-4 just to make a bigger difference with ninja run.
For scrappers, there's no bad combo, just some that are less seen. =) -
Quote:That's what i don't get... you've never played games with mana? While playing a mage? Even when you take the "mana recovery" power, you can still get drained pretty fast and have to eat tons of blue potions. At least in CoH, you can eventually get past the need to carry 30+ blue potions.
This game is tedious. Compared to other games, it gets really tired, really fast. I word it that way deliberately, because I'm talking about endurance use.
Characters in this game go through endurance way, way too fast.
(If you really went tedious, try RO. You have to get to level 10 before getting your class. That takes about 2-3 hours the first time. "rest" in that game can be used at will, because you might need it between every fight. =P) -
Quote:That's only true if your definition of origin is "the one with the biggest % for that character." There's a lot of exemple of characters with dual or more origins. Are some that just changed from one to another. Special true for mutants with very minor mutations, supers that are also extremely good fighters and aliens that also use technologie..There are really very few characters that have dual origins.
Quote:Actually, when you create a new character aliens are specifically called out as an example of natural. Most faeries and furries can also fit into the natural category. For instance, a cat-girl with claws/super reflexes.
Quote:The X-men are mutants because they were born that way. All the rest can be taken away but they will remain mutants by birth. -
If you start with wolfspider, all there primary powers is just using a gun. For the secondary, 6 are training, one is a very crappy armor that any human can wear, and one is the summon. Considering they didn't invente the arachnobot, can't upgrade or repair them, i'd say they are natural that just borrow reinforcement.
For banes, all there primary powers is just using the mace. Wich is pretty much just a mace shaped energy gun. It might seem very technological, but considering how a tommygun can shot fire and grenades as well as bullets. (assault rifle) It's just the little non-realistic part of CoH. For there primary, one is the upgrade of the armor, the other is another mace power. Wich just leave two little gadgets, surveillance and the cloak.
For the crab, they use the backpack so it seems tech origine. But it still just a big gun shaped in 4 legs. Considering they need to be a wolfspider first, they are just as gun with normal guns. The melee attacks seems a bit much, but they could already pummel and bayonet For the secondary, one is the armor upgrade, the other the trainning upgrade, one a science gadget and one is another reinforcement of borrowed tech.
For the bloodwidows, all there primary powers are just claws/darts attack. Just as natural as using dagger or any other melee weapon. For the secondary, 6 are trainning, and one is slight psionic power (wich can also be said to be traning)
Then you jump into the whole "psionic" powers for fortunata and night widow. For that, we just have to accept that psionic is natural in the world of CoH. o_o
Makes sense? =D -
Quote:Yes and no. Brutes only do slightly better then scrapper. I think the average was along 5%. And one of the big reason why is because Gloom is such a good attack. With GR, scrappers might get gloom, and might be more damaging. In a bubble, with no inspirations, and with no outside buffs, the brute still has more survivability. Higher HP is nothing to sneeze at. Also, the fury mechanic puts them ahead in both mitigation and damage output.
Scrappers have better burst damage, but over time brutes will pull into the lead in constant dps.
This means that survivabilitywise, the brute has the edge on 2 fronts. And that is in a bubble.
If you take into account real situations, the brute comes out even farther ahead. With inspirations you can take substantially less damage, OR due to the substantially higher damage bonus cap, you can put out damage that a scrapper can't come close to.
Throw them on the right team, and it's no contest.
If you are going to compare them, compare them. Throwing limitations on the comparison makes it invalid.
While the brute damage cap is higher...is base damage is a lot lower then scrapper. When you count insps or buffs, there was a post about it. Scrapper where higher for a good portion of the time (specialy with things like BU), untill you really went past the scrapper cap. Most of the time, you won't pop for 200+% of red insps. =P -
With hasten and rage, you'll need a lot more endurance, that's for sure. You should really get the miracle and numina procs. They are extremely costy, but if you save merits, it shouldn't take too long.
The three PPPs and jab are pretty useless since they are so underslotted. (except web envelope, if you only picked it for -fly) If you're short on slots, i'd pick powers that doesn't need them, like the other passive from invuln.
KO blow is so good, i'd make a priority of IOing it. You'll want max dam/rech, and very good acc/endred.
For the rest, it's hard to know if you slotted expecting to IO later, or though it needed that many slots.
RPD and RE, i'd only get 1 slot, or 2 big max. The resistance it gives is so small, it's not worth another slot. (with IOs yes though)
For the toggles, i'd keep just 2 endred. The 3rd one doesn't give much benefit. (if you want to freakenslot, 2 res, 2 endred and one res/endred is perfect)
Unstoppable, you only need 1 res IO in it, if you keep running your toggles. (wich shouldn't be a problem with all the +rec from it) Then, you can add 0 to 3 recharge IOs, depending how much you use it. -
Don't fallow that advice...specialy if you're used to Handclap. Some people just hate KB, but it's extremely usefull, specialy when survivability is the question.
What level are you presently at? If you're still low, it's normal to have problems with +2/+3, specialy if you're fighting non-s/l enemies. If you're higher, you should have enough inf to get a few IOs that would really help you out. -
Quote:/FA's fire resistance will be 90% instead of 75%. /elec's nrg resistance will be 90% instead of 75%.Cause scrappers can't pop inspirations or be on a team and accept buffs? right... :P I was talking about survivability in comparison with brutes without any buffs outside of your secondary powerset. Defense is defense so a difference in cap is irrelevant, both AT's are capable of reaching the softcap through io's without any need for buffs and therefore, any defense past the softcap would be only there to mitigate against defense debuffs and wouldn't be different when you compare the 2 AT's. As far as resistance goes, typically the difference between 75% and 90% is marginal at best and will only yield noticable differences in survivability in extreme situations when you don't take into account already layered mitigation (ie. regen values, defense and soft-control on top of resistances.) A brute is nothing more than a scrapper with tank level HP. Yes you can be buffed to tank level survivability due to your res cap and your higher HP will bolster better regen values but that won't make you a tank any day of the week when your solo or without buffs. If a scrapper and a brute with identical builds were sitting in a mob a of +4 arachnos do you honestly think that hp difference would really make a lick of difference? no. If anything the brute would steal aggro from the scrapper and faceplant.
The difference between 75% and 90% isn't marginal. You take 2,5 times more damage. If you'd put it in def terms, it's be like comparing 37,5% to 45%.
And you forgot about the god modes. Invuln and elec can easily get to 90% instead of 75%.
About the insps, it's not that the scrapper can't pop some. It's that the invuln scrapper with tough will only get from 70%-ish to 75%, instead of going a lot higher. Same for the buffs, you're still capped. But even without insps/buffs, like you mentionned in your first post, there's still a bunch of situation where the cap will make a huge difference. -
Any/any if you're using insps.
Pretty much anything except elec/ and possibly BA/ if you don't use any.
All the secondary can do, it will just change wich AVs you can solo and what you need to build for. -
Quote:I don't remember exactly, but i think we were 7 and managed to do a successfull MS raid. And most of us didn't have insane purple/pvp IOs build.Theres no way in hell 3 people can MS raid. The pylons would take way too long for 3 to do.
I checked rapidly the last two pages of the pylons thread, and i saw a scrapper who did it in 4:02 and a MM who did it in 3:18. So those two guys would solo 7 pylons in 12 minutes. Seems possible to start a raid before they respawn. Specialy if it's 3 guys instead of 2, and they concentrate on the same pylon. (all the buff and debuff stacking)
Those numbers are without insps. If you add insps, shivans and nukes? It will go even faster. -
Quote:Yes and no. One player can already do almost all the content, including soloing AVs, (even GMs with the specific right combination)I was wondering, with the new demon summoning set out, if a party that consisted of only three players would be able to do all the content to include killing AVs?
The things one player can't do, i'm not sure three could anyway.... mostly looking at LRSF, STF, khanSF and BSF.
Some borderline things like MS raid, LGSF can be done by three players.
One or three player, you'll never succeed some shards TF where you need to click four glowies simultaniously.
And you'll often need more then three people to start the TF/SF. -
Quote:You only use the best for one attack. So it will only be 30%.Thanks guys! I appreciate the speedy response.
One last thing, when I'm working on MIDs and say I have 30% melee defense and 8% energy defense. Does that mean against a melee energy attack I have 38% defense? Or only 30%? If I'm supposed to combine the two then reaching softcap won't be as hard as I had thought. -
Asking if def is only good when softcapped, is like asking if resistance is only good when you're at 90%, wich isn't even possible for scrapper. With your -def resist, 35% should be good enough, specialy if you don't tank.
The reason you hear so much about softcap here, is because people wants to solo at +4/x8, pylons, AVs and/or GMs... and without using insps. For normal play or team play, you really don't need that much.
