Good advice from Rangle so far.

I would probably go with 4 defense set slots in Deflection and round it out with 2 common resists IO. Rangle's suggestion for True Grit is a good one, though if you want to go with a Heal set, I'd allow 4 slots for that and 2 common resists IO. Slotting for resists is important, but IMO the defense and +HP aspects of those powers should come first.

Definitely drop the -KB IOs, you'll have plenty of KB protection once Active Defense has enough recharge to be perma.

IMO, you've neglected your BA attacks in favor of the epic attacks. I would recommend you get either Chop or Gash since otherwise you won't have a viable attack chain in the early levels. Also, Pendulum is must-take attack. If you're going to stick with Weave (It's not essential for soft-capping SD) I'd recommend dropping some of Ice attacks to get Phalanx Fighting at at least one more BA attack.

EDIT: Just noticed that you slotted Cleave with all Taunt IOs, *bad* idea. It's BA's most damaging attack, and should be slotted like one.

Yes, I believe that's correct. However, in addition to Taunt, IIRC non-damaging taunt auras like Invinc are also autohit in most PvE circumstances.

But with IO slotting, I don't think any tank has to worry about giving up damage for accuracy; it's easy enough to slot for both.

Yes, but that's primarily for PvP. As Largo said, Taunt is autohit in PvE, except in a few circumstances. Also please note that he didn't say you can't slot accuracy in Taunt, but that you only need to for PvP and a few cases in PvE.
  4. Though I suppose it's helpful for the OP to see another example of frankenslotting, using a /SR build is problematic since the set has quite a bit more defense than Shields to start with, so it's much easier to soft-cap it with a minimal number of set bonuses. The slotting you show definitely wouldn't soft-cap a SD build.

Also, I just don't see the point in using a common IO instead of the 3rd or 4th enhancement in a set. For sets like Serendipity and LotG that have desirable bonuses, why not just slot another of the set to get the bonus?

In addition, I don't know why you'd frankenslot attacks and leave them underslotted in damage, which is true of all your attacks except Fire Sword Circle.
  5. Frankenslotting can be very useful, but it's not necessarily advantageous for every power and in every situation.

For powers like Battle Agility, where the primary goal is to slot for defense, with a secondary goal of endurance reduction, there is minimal benefit to frankenslotting. Once you get past around 56% defense enhancement and 40-50% endurance reduction--which you can easily do with 4 slots--it's just overkill. The exception is if there's a really desirable set bonus you want that needs more slots, but in some cases here you've vastly overslotted using common IOs. IMO, you're better off slotting most toggles and passives for set bonuses.

Now, slotting frankenslotting attacks makes more sense since you can fully slot all the attack's attributes--accuracy, damage, endurance reduction, recharge, etc. But whether that's a better (or cheaper) approach than slotting for key bonuses is a matter of opinion, and depends at least in part what will benefit your powersets the most.

For Shields in particular, the set really shines if you can hit the defense soft-cap by utilizing IO bonuses. This build is well short of the soft-cap of 45% defense for all position, which means this brute is going to be considerably less durable than others that built for the defense soft-cap. And you should probably note that two of SD's powers can be (and should be, IMO) slotted for resistance: Deflection and True Grit. Slotting those for resistance will also make your brute more durable.

EDIT: Also, Shield's mez/KB protection, Active Defense, is a click not a toggle, and should be 2-slotted for recharge instead of end reduction.
  6. One option you should consider is a "build to order" outfit like CyberPowerPC:

    http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/

There are some really high-end places that will put a computer together for you, but CyberPowerPC and others like it (Ibuypower is similar) charges a modest premium for assembling the computer, and you get to pick what components you want.

It's a good compromise if you don't want to put the computer together yourself but want more control over what goes into it than you would with a manufacturer like Dell. I got my desktop from Cyberpower a few years ago and have been very happy with it. And with $1500 you could buy quite a nice desktop there.
  7. Hmm, this seems to be more about secondaries rather than primaries. In general, except for martial arts sets, which tankers don't get, fist-fighting seems to be more brute force than finesse. Maces and axes aren't exactly subtle, either.

Honestly, the only tanker secondary that seems to fit the bill is Dual Blades; it gives much more of the impression of grace and precision than the other sets. For a primary, any would do really, but I'd go with something unobtrusive, like WP or Invul. It would be kinda weird to have a graceful sword-wielder covered in Ice or Stone.

So, want to try Invul/DB or WP/DB?
  8. Just a quick note, it's late here and I don't have time for more, but I didn't want you to think you were being ignored.

If endurance is your main concern, I honestly don't believe you will have any problems considering that you have Stamina, EA, Conserve Power and Physical Perfection. My Ice/Axe does just fine with Stamina and EA.

In terms of slotting efficiency, the biggest problem I see is that most of the sets you've used have primarily positional set bonuses rather than typed bonuses. This means that you're using many more slots and spending a lot more influence than you need to to soft-cap S/L/E/NE defense.

For instance, it takes 6 slots of Red Fortune to get a 1.25% E/NE bonus. 4-slotting Reactive Armor in Tough will get you a 1.25% E/NE defense bonus *and* a 1.25% S/L def bonus. 4 slots of Smashing Haymaker gives the same defense bonus as 6 slots of Obliteration at a fraction of the cost.

My recommendation is to ditch the RF in FA and GA and plan to 4 slot with a defense set with good bonuses like LotG or GotA. For your attacks, look for Smashing Haymaker, Kinetic Combat, Eradication and other sets that have substantial S/L or E/NE bonuses--usually with just 3 or 4 slots. It'll get you to same place you are with this build, but you'll have a lot more free slots to use to get other kinds of bonuses, or just to make sure your powers are fully slotted.
  9. IME, EA is a set that works well with a primary that offers some damage mitigation besides, well, damage. SS, Stone, Mace, and Axe are the first ones that come to mind using that standard, but of course you can make EA work with any primary.

Case in point, I have a FM/EA brute that I got to 50, though I have to say that the early levels were pretty rough.
  10. Just looked up your model number for myself, and found out that 512 MB is the max amount of memory for that model. Sorry to steer you in the wrong direction, it's been a while since I've seen a computer that has such a low RAM capacity.

If a new computer is out of the question, about all you can do to improve loading times is to minimize the number of other programs you have running when playing CoH.

For in-game lag, you'll also want to minimize the graphics load. I'd start at safe mode and work your way up through the graphics settings to find the best-looking settings with at least tolerable frame rates.
  11. The slow loading is almost certainly due to memory--or lack thereof. If I read the CoH Helper correctly, you have just 512 MB of system memory, which is the absolute bare minimum that CoH will run on.

Unless your computer requires some old and odd type of memory, it should be dead cheap (around $50) to get a couple of 1 GB sticks of RAM, which will improve your loading times immensely. More RAM is a good investment in general, too, since everything will load faster, not just CoH.

Try going to Crucial.com and either input your computer information or download the system scanner. Either way, it will tell you what kind of RAM is compatible with your computer and what your options are for upgrading. You can buy directly from Crucial, but you can also take the info it gives you and buy the memory elsewhere--Newegg.com has a very good rep as an online reseller.
  12. Did you use a driver cleaner program to clean out your old drivers before installing the new ones and install the new ones in safe mode?

Also, though I'm definitely not an expert, I ran your HiJack This! log through a parser and it red flagged some items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

    and

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - avgrsstx.dll (file missing)
    O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: Browseui preloader - {438755C2-A8BA-11D1-B96B-00A0C90312E1} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\browseui.dll

Unless you know what these files are and definitely want to keep them, you should considering using HiJack This to get rid of them.

I also have personal, very negative experience with IMVU, and IMO anything that fights that hard *not* to be deleted can't be good for your computer. I'd get rid of that unless it's something you use frequently.

    Good luck!

The stealth IOs work for 120 seconds after the power they are slotted in is activated, just like the regen & recovery uniques and the Kismet +Acc.

So slotting it in a passive would essentially make the stealth "always on" which is why they cannot be slotted in passives. (Just the stealth IOs, not the other 120 second IOs) Slotting it in a toggle--the best choice by far, IMO--means it stays on while the toggle is running and 120 seconds after it is turned off. Slotting it in a click power means it will be active for 120 seconds.

Dark Armor is a set that really benefits from a secondary with strong mitigation; Stone Melee also couples that mitigation with solid damage.
Mace is another good choice, IMO; it has lots of mitigation in its KU/KD attacks and a guaranteed stun attack which is also the most damaging attack in the set. Mace's probably falls behind Stone in ST damage, but it has excellent AoE attacks and slightly lower endurance consumption than SM.

I note, however, that my primary tank is a Macer, and I believe your namesake tank is Stone Melee, C_A_M. Maybe not so much of a coincidence, hmm?
  15. I've never used Quicksand, but as a ranged immob, it seems doubtful that it would be very efficient at generating aggro. Controlling it, sure, but since they'd likely be immobed out of melee (and DR) range, I'm not sure how helpful it would be.

And for the record, although I know players do it, I hate to see DA characters without either Op Gloom or CoF. Seems wrong, somehow.
  16. According to this chart:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Compari...rds.130.0.html

the 130M is a mid-range card, which generally means that it will run CoH well enough, though probably not with all the settings maxed out. I recently bought a laptop with an ATI 4570, which is lower down in the same group of cards, and it runs CoH surprisingly well.

Fryguy, it used to be much easier to tell how powerful a card is just from the model number, but as Father Xmas pointed out to me a few weeks ago, the NVIDIA model numbers are no longer so informative.
  17. One thing that's known to cause this problem is it you have WindowBlinds or some other Windows skinning program running. If you do, disabling it for CoH should solve the problem. If you aren't running anything like that, get CoH Helper here:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~dasloth/CoH/CoHHelper.html

run it, and post the results. A HiJack This! log would also be helpful.
  18. Just to update, the compressed air did the trick! What was weird was that there was almost no visible dust in the vents, and I saw very little dust come out after the first puff. But when we rebooted, it went from 80 C at idle with the fan constantly running, to 40 C at idle and 50 C under load. *Huge* difference!

So I guess the moral of the story is just because you can't *see* the dust doesn't mean it isn't there causing a problem.

    Thanks again!

C_M_A, I think that's one of the unknowns at this time. IIRC, the 9800 GTX may run Ultra Mode by itself, so I'd recommend the OP waits until we know more before spending money on an additional or a replacement card.
  20. On the other hand, taking Tough and then Weave makes it pretty trivial to soft-cap, and the current build doesn't quite make it for melee, even with 6-slotting the shield toggles.

Personally, I'd drop CP and pick up Weave, and find a way to 6-slot Gaussian's in Build Up. With Weave, the SP +Def, and the Gaussian's bonus you'll be within just a few percentage points of soft-capping to all three positions. The biggest benefit of that approach is that you won't have to six-slot so many attacks for the defense bonuses, and you can pull two slots each out of Deflection, BA and Tough so you can do things like fully slot True Grit for the HP bonus.

Op Gloom does an absolutely trivial amount of damage to the player, it's unlikely a tank would even notice it.

IME, the negative impact of the stun wandering effect is greatly exaggerated. They don't superspeed or superjump away anymore, at most they stumble away a few steps. And if they go out of OG's radius, they wake up from the stun and immediately come running back to be stunned again.

    Quote:
Dark Consumption to get endurance back *after* Dark Regen or while running Oppressive Gloom...
Op Gloom's endurance cost is not a factor that you need Dark Consumption to mitigate; its cost is *tiny* compared to Cloak of Fear.

Bottom line, sets that stun have every bit as much synergy with DA as a fear set like DM. Three tanker secondaries have significant stun capability, Stone Melee, War Mace and Energy Melee; all have their pluses and minuses, but it's likely that a player can find one they like.

    Let me know :D

I'll echo what Frogfather said; the attacks 4-slotted with Kinetic Combat are underslotted for accuracy and damage. Unless it's an attack like Boxing that you'll seldom use, I'd add another slot and put in a IO from another set that will add accuracy, damage, and whatever else you'd like to bump.

Unless things have changed recently the Gladiator's Armor +Def is pretty much completely available, and when they do come on the market there's a line of people willing to pay 2 billion for them. So if you don't have one, don't count on getting one.

You're heavily slotted for F/C def, but that's far less common than S/L and E/NE. Wherever possible (it may not be in HPT) I'd switch the Aegis sets to 4 slots of Reactive Armor.

Heightened Senses and Weave are both underslotted for defense. If you can free up 2 slots, I'd add a slot to each and add a LotG defense.

The Blessing of the Zephyr KB protection IOs are extremely expensive, and the KB protection is not needed for WP. I'd drop those two slots and use them elsewhere.

Personally, I think the ToHit debuff slots in RttC aren't that useful. If you need slots to use elsewhere, consider pulling those.

EDIT: Here are the changes I recommend in place. There's quite a bit less F/C def than you had, but excluding the GA +Def (not because it's a bad idea, but because I don't think you'll be able to get one) this build has more S/L/E/NE def and the attacks are fully slotted.

  23. Many thanks to both of you! I think I'll try a combination of your suggestions; first using compressed air to try to clean out the fans, and then possibly opening up the drive/Ram door on the back of the computer to see if that's enlightening. I'm a little leary of exploring much more than that; after all, I'm trying to extend the laptop's usable life by reducing the temps, so hastening its demise by taking it apart is an irony I'm certain my daughter will not find amusing.

And Hyper, power off, got it!
  24. My daughter's laptop has been running very hot lately, and it seems to be more than a "get a laptop cooler" problem. I installed the NVIDIA System Monitor software, and her GPU (a NVIDIA 9600 M GT) runs at around 85 C at idle and 95-100 C in CoH just standing around in Icon.

I can hear the fan running constantly, but it doesn't seem to do anything to cool it. If this were my desktop, I'd open it up and see what's going on, but I'm not sure how much I could/should take apart on a laptop.

Any suggestions on what I can do to find out what is causing the overheating, and what I can do it correct the problem? The high temps don't seem to have caused any damage yet, but I'm worried they will if it goes on much longer.

    TIA!
  25. I'd recommend a couple of small changes:

Currently, Weave is underslotted for defense and unslotted for end reduction. I'd pull a slot from Hasten and use it for a LotG Def/End in Weave.

I know Power Sink will be a significant help for end recovery, but I think it's still a bad idea to have a high-end toggle like Lightning Field slotted for so little end reduction. I'd change the slotting in LF to 3 Eradication, including the Acc/Dam/End/Rchg, and Scirocco's Dervish Dam/End and Acc/Dam/End.

That will free up a slot you can move to Build Up. Slot BU with two Rectified Reticle and one recharge common IO, and you'll have made up the S/L defense you lost from LF. After all, LF doesn't need the high recharge of Oblit, so with this change it'll be better slotted, and you'll have gained a 3.13% E/NE def and a 10% regen bonus.
