  1. It was in an announcement back in June about not being able to change forum handles with the new system so pick one that you like. Of course that post didn't make it in the transfer because I assume it was considered pointless now that we are all here.

    Edit: Found the announcement.

As you can see this last hub is very high comparing to the rest.

Now, all of these, "Because it is DXP weekend" nonsense should not matter being I did this after Mondays Maintenance. COH has a problem on their hands at the moment. I just wish I does not drive away paying costumers like myself. Sat watching my "Red Grass" via /netgraph sitting in Atlas Park while everyone else was gaming DXP weekend.

    That is all
No that's not their firewall. What IP address were you trying to trace?
  4. You can't, game servers aren't directly accessible, all access goes through a central gateway to each server farm.

You can find those IP addresses here (gleaned from NCSoft's network testing tool).
  5. First stop and then restart the updater. The updater will remember how much you've downloaded. There are a number of download servers perhaps the one you originally got is having network problems.

Second, if that didn't work is to modify the updater shortcut to use one of the alternate download ports. The default one happens to fall within the standard port range used by Bittorrent clients and who knows if somebody somewhere is messing around with traffic shaping in that port range.

    Do a right click on the shortcut and select Properties. Now at the end of the Target line add -port 13094, include a space before the -. Your Target line should now look something like this;

    "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -port 13094

The other port you could try is 23094
  6. Well you can always humorously try Babelfish output if you put a disclaimer in first.

Just don't be an ugly American.

    Dev Digest ?

I've added the usual post happy devs to my contact list where I can after a few clicks pull up all their posts. It's a klutzy solution but it works for now.
  8. I simply blocked it with the Adblock extension. As pretty as it is I simply don't need yet another 300+KB image downloaded while I wait. The previous forum's header was flash and that was simple enough to block automatically with Flashblock, another Firefox extension I run with due to my dial-up connection.
  9. Yes and hopefully most realize that it's all in good fun.
  10. What's an order of magnitude between friends?

    New Video Card

Without more information about your system GageEndal I'm hesitant to recommend anything. The two important things to know, what type of video card slot you have and the size of your power supply, total wattage and watts (or amps) available at +12 volts.
  12. Also once subscribed, they won't appear on the first page of your User Control Panel unless there is a new post in that thread. All of them will still be found under User Control Panel -> List Subscriptions.
  13. No Zloth the 6200 is a standalone GPU, it's just not all that powerful, somewhere around the old GeForce 4 series but with Dx9.0c support. You are thinking of the integrated 6150.

Scimifish, post a CoHHelper and HiJackThis report, you can find the links to them in Zloth's sig.

As Hugs says, seeing 100% CPU usage on what is essentially a 1.8GHz Athlon 64 (single channel memory version, Socket 754) is to be expected.

Even though you have 1.5GB of memory, the longer you play the higher the likelihood that you are running out of "real" memory and start hitting the page file. Once that starts to happen you will notice a significant drop in general performance (choppy framerates), especially if you are around a lot of other players.
  14. This is a slightly different issue once you said Alienware. Look for a UI skinning program that's running, the most common being Stardock's WindowBlinds. You can configure it to not skin the game. Start a new thread and repost your CoHHelper and post your HiJackThis output.

Hey I live near that, sort of, but the locals shortened it to Webster Lake.

Here is a comparison between a 3.0 GHz E8400 dual core and a 3.0GHz Q9650 quad core on some benchmarks. The apps that like more cores tend to be 3D rendering software, video compression/conversion software and even Excel on very complex spreadsheets. Note, check the description on the benchmark as to what is better, longer or shorter bars.

There are a few games that can take advantage of more than two cores, notice the considerable improved performance in Far Cry 2 (note that they are running it a medium quality so the benchmark doesn't become GPU limited to highlight CPU performance gains).

As Aggelakis says, this game doesn't gain any advantage of more than two cores when running by itself. But if you are running other CPU demanding apps at the same time as the game, any of the previously listed type of apps or multiple active apps at the same time, then more than two cores shine. Otherwise it's a significant cost difference, at NewEgg the E8400 goes for $165 and the Q9650 is $320 which sort of makes sense, twice the cores, twice the price.

There is always the question of what is better, a fast dual core or a slower quad core? This compares the $165 3.0GHz E8400 to the $170 2.66GHz Q8400. Again if an app can take advantage of all the cores in the system, a quad is better. But if most of your apps only care about a single or dual core then speed is more important. The last four benchmarks are games and other than a very modest improvement (12%) in Far Cry 2, the other three games had modest losses in performance (-9%) with the slower quad core.

Even if you don't use any of the apps that can take advantage of quad cores there may still be the "feeling" of improved responsiveness. This is true with a quad core over a dual core or a dual core over a single core. The interface may seem faster, more responsive and that's simply caused by having more cores available, waiting for work and little to do with the actual speed of the CPU. It's a perception thing.
  18. Is there a lot of tech issues on the penny-arcade forums?
  19. No we don't but since Win 7 isn't officially available until Oct 22 I would say nVidia has some time.
  20. No they have the same symptoms but the cause may be entirely different.

You can now subscribe to a topic. I had saved the titles of my favorite topics before the switch and subscribed to them, after finding them with search. The search here is much better than the old one.
  22. I'm simply blocking all img tags because I know it is only a matter of time before players start posting hires screenshots in their posts.
