Vista x64 Crash/Fail after "Loading"

Number 1. I got Heroes and Villians through steam, and that would verify, update, verify then i'd agree to the ToS and the LOADING would fade in all pretty and nice, then my screen goes to black, the loading arrow cursor comes up and about 30 seconds later I have to send an error report.

I tried using TweakCOH to change the graphics to low and i've updated my graphics card to the latest Catylst Update (9.6 atm) and this all failed so I found a cd of it from a while back and installed that (after deleting all the steam files for CoH) but the same problems occur.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64bit,
My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4870x2,
6gb ram and an Intel i7 core processor thingy.
Aside from having 9.6 catylst I have dx10 installed.

Anyone have any ideas why it hates me?

Someone else was having problems because of the way STEAM installs or runs CoH. Do a search for 'steam' and I'm sure you'll find it here in the tech forum.

Awesome! I reinstalled the graphics drivers - and removed my ASUS tools, there was a GamerOSD and smartDoctor.

At the moment it's all working fine, the only problem is the water reflections are weird... But i'm assuming that's a software glitch.

Thanks for your help!

[/ QUOTE ]ATI cards just do that for some reason. I have never figured out a way to stop all the crazy graphic stuff ATI cards. Thats why I say its better to have an Nvidia card for CoX.

If you have an ATI GPU, then shut off: Water FX, Bloom, Depth of Field, Desaturation, and Anti-Aliasing. They don't play well together with CoH.

[/ QUOTE ]Which brings up the point why pay for a card that you have to turn off half the features just to play the game?

In some cases, it's not so much a matter of buying that specific brand of video card as it is "that's the video card that came in my new computer, and I couldn't upgrade to a different brand" without breaking into a different price range of computers.

That's the only reason I have an ATI HD 4850 video card in my new computer.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

To be specific, I verify, hit Next, and get the pretty LOADING graphic, then...nothing.

Too much money (paid for 3 months) to be having problems on a new Alienware PC, which runs everything else...!

This is a slightly different issue once you said Alienware. Look for a UI skinning program that's running, the most common being Stardock's WindowBlinds. You can configure it to not skin the game. Start a new thread and repost your CoHHelper and post your HiJackThis output.
