A friend of mine made a Spines/Fire scrapper last night and...WOW...
I really want to make a good AOE scrapper but it seems like every thread I read says that you have to invest a ton of cash into the build. Is it possible to have an effective AOE Scrapper for about 500 mil? I've been wanting to make one for a long time but I always put it off because I keep thinking "it's gonna suck unless I spend a gazillion bucks on it!"
I'm torn between:
Elec/SD
Fire/SD
Spines/Fire
Spines/Dark
Fire/Fire (too squishy?)
I'm open to other combo suggestions if these are just not going to cut it. I'm not looking to doing anything too crazy with this toon but I would like for him to be able to farm here and there without having to worry too much.

Hey guys. I've been away for about 6 or 7 months. I'm still running this build (I think Santorican or Werner helped me w/ it) and it's time to upgrade a bit. I'm nowhere near able to afford any purples but I'd still like to step the build up a bit.
The only real problems the build has for how I play are that he is unable to sustain his end for long periods of time, could use a bit more damage and maybe a bit more regen and rech?
I have a couple of LOTG 7.5's waiting to be put to use so it won't be too hard to switch some of the defense sets from Red Fortune to LOTG.
I'm not looking to solo AV's or anything (yet). I mainly solo and do some teams and TF's.
I took Energy Torrent for thematic reasons and would like to keep it in the build.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all. I've been playing for 2 years on the blue side and have finally made the switch...TO EVIL! I rolled a DM/EA Brute last night but have no clue what to do with him!
I usually play Scrappers...3 lvl 50 Kat Scraps, 2 lvl 50 DB's and various others. BUT, I've never touched either of these sets: DM or EA.
I was hoping that someone could provide a "beginners" build just with standard IO's so that I have a path to explore.
I'm a big fan of ST damage w/ some AOE capability which seems like it shouldn't be a problem with this toon. I plan on taking CJ and SJ unless there is something that would suit the build better. If hasten is a "requirement" then I might go SS instead. I don't mind skipping a travel power now that I've seen what can be done with Ninja Run, Swift and/or Hurdle and a Jump or Raptor pack.
Also, I'm an endurance freak! Can't get enough but that doesn't seem like it will be a problem either.
Normally, I would make a build and stick it up here for review but it seems that DM has many do's and donts from what I've read that I thought I'd go this route instead.

I generally worry about DPS over burst, and that comes across in my lazy attitude towards which attack I put first in my attack chain posting. Still, you often want Golden Dragonfly first so that you can fit two in a Build Up, assuming your chain is less than ten seconds. If I'm remembering correctly, the attack must only START in the Build Up, not FINISH. If so, then closing out your ten seconds with your long activation big hitter is a good plan for getting the most out of Build Up.

I'm always surprised to see these attack chains begin w/ Golden Dragonfly. True, it's the strongest Katana attack but Soaring Dragon has a faster cast time and it's knockup component seems (to me) more reliable than Golden Dragonfly's knockdown.
Is there a reasoning to this strategy that I'm misssing? I know that GD has a greater chance for double damage and both GD and SD reduce the targets def...
Up to now, I've been starting w/ SD so they get knocked up, then GC and/or SOTW, then GD. I can usually just get GD off as the target is getting up after using GC and SOTW and then knock them right back down. By that time, SD has had plenty of time to recharge and I can begin the madness again. It ends up being really fun when both SD and GD hit their KU/KD...little juggling action. heh...
As for recharge, the build that I'm currently working on is only sitting at 65%. I finally got enough merits last night for my first LOTG recharge. Too bad I need 4 more!
...sigh...it never ends...heh... -

I'm skipping Divine Avalanche on my Kat/SR. Easy enough to hit the soft cap without it and save a slot that could be better used for slashing baddies in da' face!

Is there a list of of the "accepted" attack chains for Katana that includes the recharge time necessary for them?
I've looked around a little bit and all I've found are various peoples chains...they all seem to be a bit different though.
I know I've seen them listed on a thread somewhere...thinking it was Werner maybe? Not sure........ -
I've never taken the Medicine Pool before. I figured most scrappers reserved that for when it's time to solo AV's...which I am nowhere near being able to do! lol

I don't want CJ because I don't want to have to rely on another toggle for softcap. That's really it.
I took SOW in addition to GC for the additional set bonus' since I had room for another power. -

I think I'm just gonna go off of this build until I can really afford to do things right. I have yet to really investigate a solid attack chain.
I'm starting to think that I have a complete misunderstanding of global recharge though...I thought it applied to both clicks AND attacks...seemed to make sense since it's referred to as "global". I suspect that I am incorrect?
This build is much better than what I had before and I made sure that nothing was over the rule of 5 this time...geez...heh...

I've finally reached a point where I can start thinking about buying some of the more expensive stuff now. The problem is that since I've never been able to afford any of them before, I've never really tried them in my builds.
I've read through many of the different posts on here and I see a lot of talk about "this IO being better in this power" and "don't put it in this power"....that's why I'm not starting off with a build which includes those items such as LOTG, Numina...the good stuff.
I'm trying to reach the softcap without having Divine Avalanche or Combat Jumping and shooting for as much damage as possible. I'm also not taking a travel power. Sprint, Quickness and Ninja Run work just fine for me.
Again, I'm just now at the point where I can start thinking about this stuff so I don't want to go too overboard...I can't afford a billion dollar build or anything but between AE ticket rolls and merits, I should be able to get some pretty good stuff. I can easily come up with about 400-500 million between about 2 or 3 toons.

I'm sure I'm just missing something here (it's early and I'm at work) but how are you managing to get +30% from you Divine Avalanche in one hit slotted like that? I have the same slotting at an earlier lvl except instead of recharge I have one def buff and I only get +18.90%.

I used Amberyl's Kat/Regen guide to lvl mine up. Just look in the Scrapper guide section under Katana...you'll see it. It's a bit outdated but it still worked great for me. I had an absolute blast lvling that toon!

When you say "drastic changes" do you mean IO sets, power selection and slotting or just all of the above? lol
I'm just trying to get a better understanding of /WP in general. Even in his half arsed Standard IO/IO set build, he's pretty awesome right now so I can't wait to see how it goes when I know a bit more about what I'm doing! lol

It's all good man. My line of thinking is that you never know who is on the other end of the screen...could be some 13 year old kid that you just accused of being stupid and lazy. I don't have one myself, but I do have the Brute version and I imagine they don't play very differently.
However, if you can be persuaded to go the Tank route, I've found that I can farm as quickly (if not quicker) as my Fire/Kin and Arch/MM on my Shield/SS/Pyre Tank. It's easier to soft-cap the Tank, the damage is still incredible (Footstomp, Fireball, Shield Charge, Footstomp, Fireball without any break in the chain) and your survivability is off the charts.
The thing I love about this build is that Footstomp and Shield Charge each have an incredibly large radius...and Footstomp recharges so, so quickly that you can almost cycle it without interruption. That huge radius comes in handy. Add to that a big hitter in KO Blow and a couple of decent single-target attacks, and you are a one-man wrecking crew.
And then there is this: no worries about mez, never any worries with greens...if you're farming just keep eating all the inspirations that drop and you'll speed up your kill rate and increase your survivability. I've done various farms with mine (BM, Freaks, AE etc.) but recently I've found an RWZ mission featuring Rikti (a decent bump in xp and inf from them over other factions) that I can totally wreck - it's an xp and drops bonanza.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide on!
Maybe I'll give both the Elec/SD and the SD/SS a shot...could be fun. Would the tank be effective on a limited budget though? -
Ok, I messed around with it a bit more and came up with this...I'm seriously missing some slots from some of my toggles and I think I may have to drop the set of GSFC's and reduce the slotting in Build Up to fix that.
Other than that, how does it look so far? I know it has a ways to go...
If it helps, I'm currently sitting on about 200 million inf, I PvE and team. No PvP at all.
My main concern for this build is the damage output...it seems that I'll be reducing my output by quite a bit since most of the slotting focus is going to typed def.

If you're going to be farming with bosses I'd suggest going with Fire over Electric because Fire has vastly superior single target damage than Electric without giving up much AoE.
Honestly if you are planning on farming there is no scrapper combination that can beat a fire/kinetics.
The impression I get is that a lower inf Fire/Kin build is just not worth it. I've seen some middle ranged inf scraps do some crazy stuff...plus, I just...can't...stop...playing...scrappers! hehe
