AOE Scrapper on a budget

A friend of mine made a Spines/Fire scrapper last night and...WOW...

I really want to make a good AOE scrapper but it seems like every thread I read says that you have to invest a ton of cash into the build. Is it possible to have an effective AOE Scrapper for about 500 mil? I've been wanting to make one for a long time but I always put it off because I keep thinking "it's gonna suck unless I spend a gazillion bucks on it!"

I'm torn between:
Elec/SD
Fire/SD
Spines/Fire
Spines/Dark
Fire/Fire (too squishy?)

I'm open to other combo suggestions if these are just not going to cut it. I'm not looking to doing anything too crazy with this toon but I would like for him to be able to farm here and there without having to worry too much.

Thanks

The combo you pick will come down to a matter of play style, but all the ones you listed will work.

Elec and Fire/SD provide an excellent mix of damage and survivability, but Shield really shines if you can invest in it. On just SOs and basic IOs I found it to be OK but nothing spectacular. 500 million is enough to do some very nice things for one, though. I'd suggest looking at Fury Flechette's guide to Electric/Shield and Fire/Shield for any budget.

Spines/Dark is a classic Scrapper farmer, proven very capable time and time again. For bare minimum investment I think it really shines, and scales up as you pump money into it. Fire Armor is going to do more damage, but wont be as survivable out of the box. If this character is specifically for farming then survivability isn't a concern; you can just pick an enemy group that minimizes risk. If you plan on doing more than just farming with the character then it's something to consider. That said, Fire Armor can be a beast in its own right, especially when heavily IO'd.

Electric Armor is also a viable secondary for farming. It comes with a damage aura, end management tools, a nice heal, and +Recharge.

Overall, Fire/Shield is my personal favorite. Melting faces is fun, but smashing faces and then melting them is even better.

Thanks for the info!!!!

I think I'm sold on Fire as the primary. The toon won't just be a farmer...I'd just like for him to be capable of putting down mobs as quickly as possible. Having said that, I think I may have to look for survivability as opposed to damage in the secondary. This is another place I get stuck (in addition to cost) though as I have never made a scrapper with a damage aura and would kind of like to branch out and try something new. All of my scrappers are /WP, /SR or /Regen.

Ok, after looking around some more I've determined that there's just no way I can make an effective /SD at this time.

So now I'm down to either Spines/FA or FM/FA. Which one would be more cost effective? I'm guessing FM/FA for my amount of cash and playstyle.

I'm a huge Katana fan (3 of 'em) so I like to get in and stab things 1 - 3 times 'till they die...not sure if that helps since we're talking about AOE here but........

Any more words of wisdom guys? Advice on skippable powers would be appreciated as well.

My farmer is Fire/Shield, but I've sunk billions getting Fire Sword Circle, Fire Ball and Shield Charge recharging quickly. It wouldn't farm as well with those recharging more slowly, though it's not "perma Hasten or forget it". It just scales with recharge, and recharge gets expensive.

With soft-capped defenses, survivability is just fine for normal missioning. But I have no heal, so the survivability isn't great. On the other hand, I did a Rikti War Zone challenge on the first try in barely over 2 minutes, so maybe my concept of "good survivability" is a bit on the extreme side.

Why don't you think you can make an effective Shield Defense? Even if you don't soft cap, it's still going to be more survivable than Fiery Aura, and probably put out better damage. A single purple becomes your god mode power.

It wouldn't surprise me if Spines/Fire is your best budget option of what you've presented, though, if that's the issue. Spines is just such a little AoE machine, and then you add Burn and Fiery Embrace to it. I haven't played one, and just don't care for Spines personally for some reason, but it really should be great.

I loves me some Katana, but not for a farmer.

if you've got 500mil you should be able to pull off the build I'm posting below if not some even better sets. The only thing to keep in mind is that I have 3 slots on rest as place holders for the soon to be inherent stamina, for the Perf. Shifter +end proc and end mod, and a std end mod IO.

Well, I've decided to just go ahead and make both a Spines/FA and a FM/SD and then decide which one is gonna get the money around level 30 or so.

I made the Spines/Fire last night. I'm with you about Spines, Werner. I've just never liked Spines for some reason...but I have to admit I was liking the AOE as I played him last night. I screwed up and took the first attack (forget what it's called) which seems like a lot of animation for such little damage. He just kinda flails his arms about. Of course, people say the same thing about 1000 Cuts on Dual Blades and I LOVE that one....go figure.

I'll make the FM/SD tonight...gonna make a crazy, fire-wielding Dwarf! Too bad there's no flaming Battle Axe.

MutantX 7 - Thanks a lot for the build help! I think I just needed something to shoot for...ya know? Question though: Did you take all of the /SD powers just to fit in the IO sets or are they all required to make the set complete?

Werner - Yes!...Katana is my fav set in the game. I wanna make another one! )
