I'm posting my opinions in my thread, as well as highlighting what's personally important to me. So I suggest that you do the same, instead of trying to shove your wee little #OccupyCOH rhetoric down my throat.

What I think could be ultimately beneficial to all of us is if we try to get our awesome former dev's hired at Cryptic, which is the logical destination for the COH community- With the added incentive of Golden Girl not being there.
Read your thread over on the CO board. Good stuff. Never know, some might have already contacted Cryptic and trying to get on board. Yet, some may have looked elsewhere for other projects. Either way, I think the devs that worked on this game seemed skilled enough that they wont (i hope) have any problem finding employment even if on another project of NCSoft.
  2. I thought everyone is entitled to their opinion.

In situations like this, some people may be viewed as over optimistic and believing in a miracle by some. While some people may be viewed as...not sure of proper word...but wrong when they state they not as enthused or believe as much as said miracle happening.

It shouldn’t have to be an "us vs. them". Or "I’m right and you're wrong" situation.

There has been a lot of jumping on someone case for someone even just merely mentioning that COH just might not make it beyond Nov 30th. The sad parts that I think some people may not realize is that COH MIGHT not make it beyond Nov 30th. At the same time, it might just make it after Nov 30th. And stating sides, whether it's based on optimistic hope, or "realistic" "it is not being saved", neither one is toxic. It's not like NCSoft did not say they was planning on ending this game and Paragon studio so I think, realistically, they may stick to their word with the possibility that this may the last we see COX once Nov 30 rolls around. There is nothing toxic about stating what NCSoft posted, said, and might and or likely to happen or not likely to happen. It's just a different view and a different way of looking at the situation.

Insulting a game that a player may or may not end up running to in the end, is not a very good look especially when they been very welcoming to people who is looking for a super hero MMO game to play. For all the crap some of these players here talk about CO, and some of those same crap talkers about already transferred over to the same game that just a few months ago they was downing worse than a mangy dog, is not a good look. The CO community could have just sat back and laughed and said good riddance as a whole, but they didn’t. I hope some of these truly toxic attitudes do not transfer over to CO or any other game and poison their well.

To make matters worse a majority of people that played on my server (freedom) just farmed and a majority of the toons were lvl 50 meaning less teaming during the lower levels which was a huge PIA. The people that did play lower level toons were either complete noobs and didn't know how to play or snobbish vets who were playing an alt and felt superior thanks to their vet status. Thats a terrible player balance.

I first played this game back in 05 or 06 (dont recall) and have played off and on since. Everytime I returned however the game just felt more dated compared to other mmos. The powersets and combat are pretty much the same from back in 05 and it just felt meh. The game has not aged well for me. Going rogue was nice but its novelty wore off rather quickly for me.

This is a minority opinion on this forum but does anyone else feel the same? When I heard the news it really didnt bother me at all. It was nice to play this at first but it went downhill from there IMO
You are not the only one not upset. It was bound to happen at some point and that is a risk with any online game. At any moment the company can say "Alright, we had enough of this. Let's bounce." Then that would be the end of it.
With that said, even after what, 8 years of this game being live or at least since I started playing in i6, I didn’t expect it to happen just yet. I guess I just did not have that emotional attachment to the game nor community so while I can see why people are upset, in a way I don’t get how people not see this coming eventually. Probably as they can’t comprehend my view and some probably can’t even understand it, but thousands of players thousands of views.
I know for some people this game was a very good enjoyable outlet, a break from the daily rat race, a place where they can meet people that share their interests. Some people even met people in game and turned it into a real life friendship. And for some of them to see all of that come to an "abrupt" end is like being in a comfortable community and getting papers saying you have to move on.

As I said in earlier posts, as a business decision, I completely understand it. On a personal level, I has to suck to have a fun job you love and them *poof* it's gone. On a gamer level, some people put in significant time here and some people been here long enough to see their ideas go from an abstract idea, to concept, to actual being in this game and now all of that is on the verge of coming to an end.

For me this is like a car that has been working fine all of sudden catch fire and watching it burn. A bit annoying at first but then life goes on like another day in the office and I buy another. Then, the old one that burned is soon just mere small table talk for laughs. Then it is soon forgotten.

In game, while majority of the people was very friendly, welcoming, warm and helpful, you have a few that was downright mean to new players, which is bad for business and probably a factor that kept the population from booming like it could have done. Some people become vets and been there for years and forget that at one point in time they too was a wide-eyed newbie trying to find their way around. Some people will ignore this and continue but some people will say "Forget this crap, I'm going somewhere else." And of course some vets will and have responded "Good, we don’t need you here anyways" followed by some insult and or expletive. Running people off just to keep the clique intact, while alienating new players, is not a good way to grow numbers in any game, especially one with a relatively small population. Although the friendly welcoming people outnumber the aforementioned rude people probably by tenfold, people that rude tend to leave 100 times greater impression than nice people. Some people don’t remember the guy from last week that they passed at 3:42pm that said "hi" to them but they sure as hell remember the guy that was cursing at them and acting a fool two months ago. Some people remember that no one uses turn signals to change lanes but overlook the people that do.

But that is just me and not in any way implying that is how people supposed to feel or wrong for feeling differently than I. And I hope the same apply for me.

I guess to sum up my overall feeling is more of the proper term of feeling indifferent to the situation. Still will play/post as normal until it's done and when it's done, it's done.

I am not so invested or selfish or foolish enough to think that industry professionals such as the team at Paragon Studios will not seek other employment; to ask people not to put food on the table for ones family is a little hypocritical in my book.

All I'm asking is for people to look at the situation a little pragmatically and a little realistically. It's not a matter of flipping a switch and magically playing again come December 1st. If the game comes back, and I expect it very unlikely at best to be under an NCSoft banner, there will be a lag time to put together a new infrastructure. And Paragon Studios may not have significant things such as the core game engine. These are not flights of fancy; these are realities that will and may be as I type this, negotiating points between the parties.

So yes, remain hopeful, but also give a little thought about just what going out from under the umbrella of one publisher to another or even more significantly on their own means in real-world terms. Because this game will not return magically as it stands now. Things have and will change between now and the end of November.

    S.
    This.

    I think in the
http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index....,5093.180.html, as may or may not be obvious is that the Nov. 30th shutdown will still happen, and although they opened a dedicated email address, it may mean they are truly listening or a ruse to make it look like they are listening. I believe more in the first one. The refund thing seems to be nothing unusual for them as I would hope they would hope that players from COX still believe in them and try some of their other topics so just taking the money and running probably wouldn’t be a smart thing to do if that is the goal. That is of hoping that COX players subscribe to their other offerings of the company instead of going somewhere else and lining another company's pockets.
Now the question is will or will not another company or some form of "Paragon Studios" depending on own the rights to the name and if NCSoft is willing to let that go (probably part of the negotiations) pick the game up and run with it. And depending on how much NCSoft is willing to sell or let go probably will greatly affect the reincarnation, if any, of COH in the future.

Sometimes corporations discontinue a product and or kill a product and hold on to the important rights so that no one, especially a competitor picks it up and make possibly more out of it and or do better job with said product as then it would make the company that threw it away in the first place look like idiots and of course that usually don’t sit well with stockholders. Some have no need for a product and sell it for a price and given that this game was still raking in some sort of profit, probably a hefty price. Then some others hold on to the dead product to reincarnate it later or use it for other stuff i.e. game engine, concepts, IP, and etc.

As said earlier even if the success happens for players, it probably will be a long down time before it's up again even if NCSoft just hands everything over. Of course it will be longer if NCSoft decides to hang on to other things, whether willingly or because a third part contract, then the down time will be even longer to fill in the gaps. Even something as simple if NCSoft decides to hold on to the Paragon Studio name and TM, then of course any reference to Paragon may have to remove from the game. This is just as an example. The negotiations, although not many details about what the negotiations entail that I know of, may be about a number of things. Maybe it was about the refund, maybe it was about the game engine, maybe the concept artwork, IP, who knows or even employee severance package and the ability of them to continue with the game. It may be all about the money at this point of NCSoft might be saying, "We'll think about it."

Just as they probably didn’t decide to end Paragon Studios and COX overnight, it probably will take 5-10 times as long for the negotiations with the matters that could be at hand. Even though it came as a shock to the player and stuff, I'm sure they had their bean counters weighing the pros and cons of the decision for a while now and given that most if any corporation would make a move like that without consulting the shareholders, at least the major ones, is not probable. And just getting a shareholder meeting together is something that may take a month or 6 in advance in itself.

I guess at this point the best thing to do is to wait and see and continue the efforts. The more players leave and abandon ship the less potential profits any potential buyer will see and the less likely they will jump into the project to keep this game rolling in the future. Probably will be a major announcement after the refunds are divvied out, unless something of new flash worthy changes that don’t fall under the NDA.

It is. And if the slim chance that something gets reversed and PR have to clean up a mess it usually mean someone/group high up is going home for good, albeit in the US with a nice sized Golden Parachute

I dont know. I dont think CO is bad. It's fast pace, dont require a team all the time to level effectively, the customization is great. They have powers and weapons that was said to "Cant happen" here in this game (i.e the jet thing, the scythe, chain whip powers,) and models of enemy that said was probably not going to happen here that was suggested as ideas, like the bear model and even dinosaur models. While the power color customization isnt as great but you can build a toon to fit what ever role you want it to. You can build a tank that blast things, or a melee/healer or anything in between with mostly imagination being the limit.

The more comic style is different, and other things but I kind of like it. Plus every little thing isnt based on luck or rolls and etc.
  9. Well given they are based in Korea, some of that stuff might be hard to comeby if at all. But I see where you are getting at and it's a extreme drastic measure of thought, but might actually shine the spotlight on the company that is relatively unheard of.
But things like that is a legal tightrope walk and I wouldnt use the word "blackmail" persay as I think that is illegal and sure that NCSoft have skilled lawyers in that department.

And unless COX was some how an illegal trade deal, which it probably may not be, then I think even if you uncover the dirt of mass murders and torture of employees, they still would shutdown COX, even if to cover the legal costs. Plus these things happen all the time in the gaming world. The grime reaper of MMO just so happened to pay us a visit. Remember 8 years is remarkable for an online game. Most dont even last 3 years, a few make it past 4, and even fewer see the 6th annual.

They really don't have anything to lose since many of us wouldn't have normally bought it anyway and there is potential room to make extra revenue from microtransactions despite the loss of a sale (they otherwise would not get). I honestly think that is the surprise and that it is unrelated to City Of Heroes.

The community is going to be pissed if this is the case.
I think they may be counting on that so it's still a win situation for them. They walk away with the money and hope players are truely pissed and not use the vouchers. And hope that the ones that do use the vouchers, hope they get hooked after three free months and continue to subscribe.

I don't want to sound negative and be one of the few who drives down the energy of the Save City Of Heroes campaign, but TonyV posted exactly what I was thinking in his latest post. Talks aside, I doubt any of the development team has been or is willing to stick around and not look for a job on the slim chance NC Soft might change its mind. The biggest threat to the death of this game is already happening. I'm sure that some of the dev.'s have pretty much secured new jobs and TonyV is aware of this.

The biggest trial will be getting a reaction from NC Soft in the next two to three weeks. The executives at NC Soft know that no sane person from Paragon Studios is going to stick around in the hope that the company might reverse its decision. My feeling is that after a month to five weeks from the date of the statement being made to sunset the game is the most integral time period. After the next two to three weeks I wouldn't put much hope into the game being saved. TonyV knows this. Furthermore, if the developers get hired elsewhere, City Of Heroes will not be the same game even if it survives under another studio's banner. TonyV is seeming more desperate and I know I am not the only one sensing this. Since he has direct contact with some of the people at Paragon Studios I would not take this as a good sign.

In the meantime everyone should keep up the support, I will, but be very realistic that as with anything in life, nothing lasts forever and that this game had a great run of eight years. Eight years is much longer than what most MMO's stick around for nowadays and we should be happy that we got to play for this long and happy that the player base isn't taking this lying down. I do feel that NC Soft has a right to do what it wants (obviously) with its own property, but they should have given more respect to the development team and players and have given City Of Heroes a proper send off. They should have kept a small staff on to create a small end of the world event. One final assault from The Battalion let's say.

As for emailing the top executives at NC Soft? That's something I'd refrain from doing. My father works in upper management and while it may not be a video game company he works for, I imagine that the upper management at NC Soft is very similar. I doubt that most of the executives even play video games. They are only concerned about making more money and are not entirely too concerned with an old IP that they find insignificant. Emailing the executives directly, in my mind, is a bad idea and may only serve to annoy them and reinforce their decision to shutter the game. If I know my dad and his coworkers well enough, annoyance is probably what will be the end result and make them less likely to reconsider sunsetting City Of Heroes.

For those readers who played (or ever wanted to play) Earth and Beyond, I want you to see another choice.

Earth and Beyond Emulator, an Online Role-playing Galaxy
    http://www.net-7.org/
    http://forum.enb-emulator.com/

EA shut Earth and Beyond down in September 2004. The exact sunset date was etched into my brain for years--it was one of the saddest days of my gaming hobby, second only to August 31, 2012. But a community rose from the ashes, surrounding a group of talented programmers, animators, artists and bug hunters--all players--calling themselves Net-7 Entertainment. The Titan Network's dedication has often reminded me of Net-7 Entertainment, and I always suspected that if CoH's final days beckoned, the Titan Network would step up.

If you want to imagine how far a group like the Titan Network's dedication can stretch, think about the fact that hundreds of disenfranchised Earth and Beyond die-hards spent nearly a decade getting their beloved game back to a feature-complete beta state--and those were different days, with probably less than a quarter of the player base that City of Heroes enjoys. Five years of that were almost completely thankless, filled with seemingly insurmountable bugs and other setbacks. My biggest alpha-testing guinea pig was a nephew that helped me find bugs on my private server to report on the forums, before they had a publicly funded server that could hold several hundred players without crashing. But dammit, I was going to pull my character out of EA's cold, soulless hands and bring him back. We all were. And we did.

I recommend this game because it still looks and plays great (the way that textures work, your higher resolution video cards and monitors will make you think you're seeing a graphics overhaul). Also, part of the reason City of Heroes lured me in was because of all the similar design elements in the areas of class customization and a rich, story-driven game universe that's GREAT to team up in and benefit from role-based abilities, ship components, and buffs. Plus that, when you're done customizing your character, you get to design a ship using various parts, textures, and colors whose concepts were imagined by Doug Chiang. And Net 7 Entertainment has taken it to the next level(!), adding in-game features like shared character vaults, offline access to your inventories, entire new solar systems and accessible planets, and those three mythical character classes that never made it into the game (including their ships). And--folks, the content designers have the original Story Bible (it's available for anyone to see if they want).

It's a tight-knit community all on one server, a community that knows what hard times are like, paid for by grateful (and optional) player donations that have always exceeded the funding goals, enabling the dev team to power this player-run game with some dreamy technology. When school's out, the concurrent users have spiked to nearly a thousand. There are always players flying around and looking to team up. The players didn't just take back their game. They made it better.
That is good stuff there. How did they do it? Did they aquire the IP and codes and go to work from there or did they just replicate it?
  14. Ooooo. I see.

Now mind you I havent read any other post yet but maybe this has or has not been addressed. Do this game really have a large enough portion to actually make it work? I mean usually when going against a corporation, especially a publically traded one, a petition usually have to have at least 40k-50k people before the secretary at the door even looks at it and about 100k before any of the decision makers even give it two seconds? I'm sure even though this decision seemed "all of a sudden" to Paragon Studio and the gaming community, Im sure they had meetings about this action with their "investors". I mean realistically, a 50k game community, when some of their other offering is multiple times larger and one that even surpassed that before being released, is small beans.
I have a feeling that the heads of NCSoft and the investors dont really give a hoot where these 30-50k players go. They know some will fuss but will buy their other offerings, and others will disappear into the night but this is after most giving, what, a few grand a piece into their pockets over the years? At this point it, they might have already figured they made a killing off us and we are no longer needed. From the past situations, this seems to be the case.

But if this petition thing do work, then it will be very national gaming community news worthy at least.
  15. wait, how many petitions are going on? Would it be better to consolidate them? And probably not good to publically admit using fake names. Kind of chips at the credibility of a petition.
  16. Took a crack at that CO after some egging on from a friend that been playing there for ages. Interesting is what I must say. So far, at least in the early levels, there is no need for a team to level effectively, thus no need to even bother with worrying about the people there and socializing. It's like playing a stand alone console game except it's online. Not sure if Im going to switch there for good or not, but I'm going to give the game a fair shot. My friend said he has a couple of 40s without so much as saying a single word to anyone or having to form a team to get through the story arc equivalent. Also asked him about the board community...

But from what I can see, they have some sort of whip melee, and the scythe weapon of some sort. Good stuff.

Otherwise, my own power usage is a lot like yours. Stoney is probably the all star of controller/dom pets, in my opinion. Yeah, kind of did that by a way of experiment. Thought about ridding it but by then, I was already level 50 and about at the end of the road with that one build so I left it in there. If I was a lower level, I would of gotten tid of the kb proc and went back to SO.
