true but not sure if its morally right to "bootleg" another's work for their own use and enjoyment without giving proper compensation to the owner, especially without their permission.

I would be on an emulator in a blue streak.

Was reading an article the other day about Blizzard locking everyone in Iran out of WoW WITH NO REFUNDS, due to US sanctions [and hahahaha on that one, brilliant!] and someone in the comments section said that a development house just ripping away characters that people have given real-time time and effort to, was just EVIL.

Good point, although admittedly I don't care much about what happens to the hostile forces in the Persian Gulf area. But NCSoft ripping *our* stuff away with no reaon nor warning is in fact, evil.

Got no problem dodging that bullet if possible. If NCSoft does not like that, they can modify their behavior.
Not everyone in the Persian Gulf is hostile on an individual level and not everyone stateside is friendly.

But either way it seems a bit odd to do that. If it was evil to do it to us, with refunds, it is surely evil to do it to them without refunds. Yet I think one importance difference is that Blizzard probably didnt have much say in the matter, compared to NCSoft.

Each part of the game can be broken down into these categories, on the server side:

Character information. Positional information in both simply xyz as well as arm and leg positions, and orientation. Same for NPCs and Enemies. All this information has to be relayed back to you, and all people see the same information. If the defeated enemy is face down, and 'pointing' northwest, all people see this basic positional status.

This DOES NOT include Propelled items, those are random at the client side. Just where they are is important, nothing else. Your computer decides and keeps track of the item. It also does not include Ragdoll information, I think. One may see a twisted up pretzel, where another might see a straight Exorcist defeat.

And that is just the character information. Your client sends back commands telling the server what you want your character to do, and as mentioned, lag can cause the server to tell the client 'hold on', or 'move back to here, this is where I have you' (rubberband)

The server calculates where you're supposed to be, or whether your power is reset or all that stuff, and sends back the pertinent info as needed. This is why the power lag/rubberband happens especially in a busy map, such as during a raid. Server's got a LOT to do..

Then there's the mission engine, which uses all that, but adds the rules and logic to make the mission 'go'. This DOES NOT include the words. Just how the opposing enemies work, and placements on the maps for them and any glowies. This is an independent, yet dependent, engine from the character and NPC/Enemy engines.

If you could figure out all those, then you could do an offline server that would probably maybe work solo on one decently powered computer, but would likely be better if it were a stand alone networked computer.

And I've not talked about the authentication of your account and all that noise. If you wanted to play your current characters, that has to be figured out first, I'd think.

I'm thinking everything else is client side. Again, the demorecords show the game *can be run* offline. The piggs have all the information in them, and the game just renders the data. This also means that your character information, what they look like anyway, is there. And with Sentinel+, the powers and enhancements are known, as well as badges, accolades, etc.

But that is a LOT of speculation on things. Just thinkin' about what's client, and what's server, and throwing darts. Realistically, though, it would really take a Dev to say "Here. This is how.". Or better yet, "Oops, I accidentallied the server code onto the intarwebs. My bad."

    Bettin' that last doesn't happen.

    Mike
Sounds like a lot of work. No wonder not many MMOs ever make it to console and vice versa.

Nope. They dont seem to have much debt but seem to have a lot of cash laying around not to mention IPs to use IF for some blue moon during the perfect straight line aligment of the galaxies happen. And before any of that happens, best believe they will cut back even further in the American market before touching their main market.

I suppose if that sort of thing was big enough, it might have been cheaper in the long run for them to keep the game officially online, lol.

    Sorry. Dreaming.
Depends on how many are made. Remember the music sharing fiasco where they couldnt find a single person or shut down all file sharing in charge so they started to sue to users that they managed to catch.

Ironically I still thing there are some music sharing sites still otu there but from what I hear is that they are no where near as popular or used as much when users thing that any moment this could be a download with a line on it and be sued beyond the means they are able to pay. Some people feel the risk is well worth it and go underground and some people rather not chance it especially when it only cost a mere dollar per song on many sites that are good reputation. No matter what they do or did they wont totally end music but it didnt get super out of control as it would of if theyjust let it go on.

And speaking of chances and whack a mole, they might be just as tenactious as the Save CIty of Heroes campaign. Knowing they have nearly no chance getting the results they want but some how it make sense for them to try anyways instead of just "laying down" as they call it now, and leaving it be. Not to mention that they may not be able to shut down all but that doesnt mean they wont try to get the ones they can get. And then if the emulator is going to be online, then finding someone who is in charge of it shouldnt be too hard. If it's offline, then it would be harder unless they track down someone who is making money from it by selling it, or someone charging access to it. More than likely they already havea department that they are paying for already to deal with this stuff.

My reason is because I can make my own fun through the costume creator and roleplaying, so even if an emulator is buggy and missions are lacking, there's still plenty to do. I'm not afraid of legal repercussions because its highly unlikely to happen. Should the original game be revived, I'd go back in a heartbeat. If the real thing exists, what need is there for the emulator after all?
and at one point it was highly unlikey this game would shutdown this year. Unlikely the effort to save it would succeed yet people chose to try anyways. Sometime the "unlikely" is not a large part of the decision.

Yet, mostly base the decision off the legality of it. To me there is no point in me investing time and or money in something that is just an email or snitch away from being shutdown especially when a perfectly legal game has been found for me to play.

I think (hope) they already took that into consideration and expected many players to leave their other products alone. More than likely, it was part of their calculations.

Worse comes to happen, they will find the American market is not worth the trouble, completely pull out and focus on their biggest money maker market which is Asia and take the COX IP with them just for the troubles.

    For teh future

If the game is good I'll check it out. If not, then no worries, I'm sure it will succeed anyways.

How deep of a spiritual successor are we talking about here? I mean, is it going to be exactly like COX except with things changed around barely enough to avoid a lawsuit? Or are we talking about an exact copy hoping that someone wont notice? Or something totally from scratch?
  10. Not even completely sure what an emulator entails or do. But if it's an "illegal" underground one, I'm not touching it with a 10 foot pole.

I guess to NCSOFT, the tax write off is too juicy a fruit.

What we need to do is keep banging our save City Of Heroes drums, so that when this day comes, American game companies interested in bidding or whatever they do to acquire a game, will know this game still has a fan base.

    I don't know..life sucks sometimes.

    Lisa.
Hope the fan base last a year or so. And hopefully not many feel that all trust in MMOs went down the tube. Unlike many other MMOs, there were many people where this was their first MMO and many after this fiasco said it may be their last. While others even if the game is sold down the line, it assumes the new company isnt looking at what COX was at say i7 or pre-i13 and expect that much of a return, or even levels that matches the levels prior to Aug. 30th and if those levels are not met, end up immediately dropping the game again and back in the same boat, especially if the engine is not updated or something done to it to overhaul it.

    true.
  19. Yeah, things have bee na bit quiet. On one hand it's nice on the other hand, means that not many people hanging around. Probably will get more quieter as the time gets closer and then may have a decent sized population in game, for those that are able to log in, on the last day.
  20. Going to stop by the Austin and or Dallas one and if I'm not in St Louis during the time period will go to the Oceanside one too.
  21. yeah they are a little slow responding probably because there are less of them. Back in July that discussion probably wouldnt have made it past about 10 posts about it on a slow day.

Well like Nostradamus, they are not technically wrong, but merely "predicting" the obvious outcome eventually. Yet, knowing the eventual outcome, not many did anything to stop it or even gave it much thought of "well hell, maybe we should try and save the game before it ends." Nah, it took for the game and decision to be made already to try and fight an uphill battle when all of this stuff, like Atlas 33 and stuff should of been going on a long time ago. Prior to this, I dont think I ever racalled 33 instances of Atlas at least since I7 or it wasnt considered news worthy at the time. As crazy as it sounds maybe we should of listened to those doom sayers a little bit more and actually looked into it instead of dismissing it off the bat as if it was going to last forever despite the dropping numbers. While it happens in games all the time, when numbers start dropping, and population starts to shrink, then greater chance of cancellation. If there are not millions of players and subcribers, then there is a good chance of cancellation may happen at any moment.

What we had here was an unique and good for that matter game, yet no effort to really grow the population and or keep up the revenue. Remember the decison makers probably dont play and all they see are charts, graphs and dollar signs. If it dont look good in that respect, then it may be the first one to go. While at the time, many people loved the relatively small and "close" community, it is not good for buisness in the long run.

Was it still turning a profit? Sure, but 2 million/every three months is like an average salery person picking up every penny or nickel they see. Sure it's a penny or nickel they didnt have before but it's not much to worry about losing. I dont even bother with pennies and when I get change back in pennies, they either end up in the trash or never leave the store. I dont even bother picking up nickels or dimes if I drop them. Is it a dime that could be added to something? Of course, but not worth the effort bothering with it to gain it. Given the age and it seems that the engine was reaching the point where not much else major could be churned out of it, given the number ideas that were said to be "impossible" or "too hard to do without fiddling with a bunch of codes" it either was closing it now or let it die a slow death and wait until they started to lose money then close it down. Any sensible person that could see something that in the future they could start actually losing on, would do what they can prevent that and get out while they are ahead.

If they let the game died a slow death, then not only would it possibly cost them more money than they pull in at some point in time, but also means that the IP would be near worthless as it is probably viewed that with less players, means less interest in the game, the less the IP is worth. If they yank it now, that have all the data to prove that the IP is worth something and then could add to that worth, and given that they had potential buyers or maybe, that adds to the value and just by keeping it, they could make more money in a tax write off than this game could make in over a year assuming that the cash flow didnt continue to decline. Then when they decide to release it again, maybe with updated material, people will come back and even new players too. Like a reset button with sell the IP and then spend 10s of millions trying to recreate or buy another one down the road.

Worse that can happen if they hold on to the IP is that in a few years it is worthless but they still didnt lose money. Worse that can happen if they sell is that they may gift drop the entire COX market to someone else and lined someone else pockets.

As long as it stays like this, then it will be straight. Although, I wouldnt call this the most friendly community as I came across communities that are alot friendlier over all and less people just posting things to get a rise out of people. But, it's not the worse. Just that many times the people that go around posting for trouble speak "louder" and here everyone just go along with them because they are popular, well liked, or "expert" i na certain ways and only speak up to the person that is tryign to defend themselves because no one is suppose to disagree or argue with the resident "expert". If they make another game like this, I hope that part of the community does not follow and realize in the end it actually drive new/potential players and ideas away and causes premature death of games, especially relatively smaller ones.

BTW I hate the title of this thread. "Murder" is a pretty harsh word for a business decision imo...a bit on the dramatic side.
While it might be good in short term to sell, in the long run it may not be bright idea.
If for some reason they decide to re enter the hero MMO realm again and sold the IP rights, that means they will not only have to recreate everything from scratch, they will also have to compete with the competition they basically gift dropped to some then small company that may be a power house by then because they sold them a ready made package game, that is already known, established fan base, and etc.

From the looks of it, they are not hurting for cash and right now it would be a pretty odd move for them to sale unless someone makes them an offer they cant refuse and basically buy on their terms. Even if they somehow end up in tight situation, they can always sell later.

Yet given the little amount of details, no telling how they crunched those numbers and came up with the decision was not to only shut down but to do so nigh immediately. I suspect it may be nearing tax season and someone fiddled with the numbers that is going to make that asset look good. Then afterwards they still can sell and probably make over all more than twice the amount than if they sold now. Or as mentioned above, they may be planning or thinking about or crossed their mind to build another hero MMO within the next 1 year to 25+ years down the line.

I'm not sure about them, but I wouldnt want something I bought and hold all the rights to only to try to make a quick buck and create more competition in an already tight and shrinking market i nthe long run.
