I have a nice plain black background now. Yay for Adblock!
(Incidentally, Penny's "I'm so happy to be here!" face was being cut off by my scroll bar.) -
Quote:We didn't. And Seer Marino's arc established her as an interesting character. What more did we know of GW at that point than we did of Statesman?
Nothing more than she was a Ghost.
Let's not pretend there's been a whole lot of GW characterization out there.
Now let's look at Praetor Duncan's arc. What did we know about her before that? She's Tyrant's granddaughter, she killed her mother, and she takes advantage of Anti-matter's obsession with her. Quite a bit more to build on than we had with GW, and yet her arc manages to make her into alternately a bratty airhead, and Generic Contact #34092.
So tell me, why should I care what happens to her? -
Quote:It worked in Marino's arc because the signature characters involved were interesting, well-rounded characters. It doesn't work so much when the characters are cardboard cutouts, bratty airheads, complete jerkasses, or know-nothing know-it-alls like so many of the newer NPCs.What made the story awesome was it involved a signature character, the story actually seemed to mean something, and for redside, I didn't feel like a lackey.
Using signature characters in story arcs is one of the best things the writers could start doing.
"He's a signature character!" isn't an adequate answer to "why should I care what happens to this person?" I think the response to Statesman's death proved that. -
Quote:Or, you know, they could leave out the cutscenes entirely. Considering that the devs have repeatedly stated they're a lot of work, they sure seem fond of them. Personally, I'd like to get rid of all the cutscenes in the game, but that's just me. They certainly have no place in content that is designed to be repeated, such as Incarnate stuff. The extended conversations between NPCs while you stand there and pick your nose are just as bad.
Now, I understand it's difficult for the animators to come up with cutscenes on the spot, and it's tempting to just adapt the script to what's already been coded, but at some point the writers are going to have to start banging their hands in the table and demand that decisions aren't made before they're actually included on the script. Does that mean leaving out the cool NPC with her flashy new costume? It's a shame, but yes. Does that mean not putting to use the newly created moon textures that everybody at the graphics department spent the last month working on? Sorry, maybe next time.
The problem isn't really the cutscenes anyway, as I'm sure those are coded to fit the script, not the other way around. There has been, however, a tendency to create arcs around new mechanics, which is completely backwards.
But anyway, mechanics are irrelevant to good storytelling. The Dark Astoria arcs are mechanically quite good (aside from the aforementioned long cutscenes and extended NPC conversations), but that doesn't change the fact that Mot could eat everybody involved and I wouldn't give a damn. -
Quote:Hmm, interesting how many of those women are NOT a C-cup.Wrong rebuttal, Ten.
Here, let me try
I don't get it. Why are you so hell-bent on insisting that people who want more diversity in slider options shouldn't want it? -
Right, I know the overall stupidity was never fixed, but I was under the impression that in-game NPC names were removed from the blocked list.
-
I thought they fixed that. Is it broken again?
It's times like these I'm glad I don't care about AE anymore. -
Quote:I'd like a version of the "Disco" booty shorts without the thigh-highs.Yeah, I've been there before. And just the other day I was wishing there was a bikini bottom that wasn't quite so narrow, too. (EDIT: Though, perhaps at that point it technically wouldn't be a "bikini" bottom. I wanted something between the bikini and the shorts options.)
Quote:Now. It still gets brought up, what is the minimum slider, B or C? If you think it's C and the slider goes up from there, that's still 1) realistic as over half (at least in America) the female population is C or bigger.
You know what I'd like to be able to do? I'd like to make a skinny male character that doesn't look really really odd. -
One time I got two pieces of Absolute Amazement in one Malta mission.
I guess that explains why their stun grenades last forever. -

Quote:Yeah, this makes the "performance issue" argument make even less sense. We can't wear a trenchcoat with a cape but they keep making powers flashier and more graphics-intensive. Wha?Yeah, kind of funny isn't it? Almost every talons and knives of vengeance NPC has a double cape rig and players often run DA content at high spawn settings, and yet what really lags systems isn't the cape rigs, it's the Talons' ridiculously awesome and showy powers like ash fall and meteor.
(And incidentally, I don't consider ash fall and meteor "awesome," I consider them evidence that the dev team must have a serious case of new shiny-itis if they've already forgotten the mass cheering that went up when the IDF and Malta smoke missile gfx were toned down.) -
Again, I'll second Sam's perpetual request for a more muscular female texture.
Long hair for male characters. And by "long" I mean past shoulder length, at the very least.
Long updo hairstyles for female characters that aren't cutesy or have a million doodads in them. I'd like something like a simple high ponytail without the cheerleader bangs, a single long braid, or Seven of Nine's hairstyle. Basically, I want my long-haired characters to be able to wear a cape without dealing with clipping or getting a haircut.
More options using the trenchcoat rig for both genders. Robes would be nice.
Can we finally get those loincloth thingys that Sister Solaris and a bunch of the Dark Astoria NPCs have? Obviously performance isn't enough of an issue to prevent giving them to minions in an NPC group, so why should it prevent players from having them?
The foot shape you guys are currently using for high heel costume pieces (The one used for the Barbarian heels, the Pocket D sandals, Witch Heels, etc) is neither realistic nor attractive. Seriously, you need to rethink how you design high heeled shoes. The old-school "stiletto" and "thigh-high" feet aren't realistic either, but at least they look ok. The new ones aren't realistic and look downright fugly. -
I don't play Defenders because Corruptors exist.
Solo, I find Defenders painfully boring, and on a team their higher buff/debuff numbers are mostly redundant. -
I craft Resucitators but keep forgetting I have them. They don't take up space in my inspiration tray and you can't give awakens to free players.
-
Wait what?
Since when can we have three powersets in AE? -
Quote:Considering that I have played many AE arcs that did build on established canon, introduced the writer's own ideas and made them fit rather than just throwing everything the author didn't like out the window, no, I don't think it's such a rare skill. If a bunch of amateurs can do it for their own amusement, people who are being paid to create a consistent game world have no excuse.I would KILL to write for CoH because I like the universe they've established. And I would love taking raw ideas and fleshing them out and giving them life, even when they're not my own, because to me THAT is the mark of a good writer. Anyone can make up their own stuff, but being able to build on an established foundation of canon and take something someone else started and run with it and make that work and be seamless is a skill far too few writers, let alone comic book writers, possess.

Quote:There's another tier of lore out there, too - going back to epics. The Coralax. This one fulfills *so* many wishes I don't understand it not being done. We've got a potential Epic AT, for those that want to focus specifically on Coralax lore (and potentially new variations and combinations of powers not available elsewhere - another "Free for VIP, for sale for everyone else" bit too, to help with the funding.) We have the Underwater zone(s) asked for for how long. We have lore tied in to both COH and COV, though heroside it's more of a guest appearance in the Hollows (why aren't they in IP, pestering Lusca, or Talos or FF?) And to cap it off, we have a goddess to face, or help (Merulina,) for the Incarnate angle when we're done with all the other stuff. This is "old lore" that should really be getting worked on and mined for all it's worth. It can be dealt with throughout multiple level ranges. It should, really, be an issue (even 1 1/2) in and of itself with everything that could be done with it. -
Quote:You want a blueprint for the CoX multiverse?Actually they do have a blueprint for the COX verse, there is a story bible. The Main problem with it is that the Devs forget which bits of it we know and which we do not know sometimes.
Take several different-colored pieces of string.
Roll them into a ball.
Put the ball of string into your pants pocket and put the pants through the wash.
There you go, now you have your very own map of the CoX multiverse.
The "story bible," if there ever was such a thing, was likely thrown aside with the release of CoV, and newer stories ignore even lore that is explicitly stated in-game. Because Posi wants the writers to be able to be creative, dontcha know. The end result is a tangled mess. -
I logged in today and someone else was superleader. I couldn't have been auto-demoted due to time logged out, since I have auto-demotion set to 30 days at least and I have logged in the character in the last week. I haven't changed alignment either, although the character is a Vigilante and has been for months.
Has anyone heard of this happening to any other SG leader with i22 release? Any idea why it happened? -
-
So what....Ponytail Melee in i24?
-
I usually drop "Explosion in Peregrine," especially the vigilante version. Those blinkies always take me forever to find.

Quote:"Joyriding" in a Zeus Titan is kinda permanent.Personally, I've always loved that piece of RWZ music, especially the part starting at 0:28 in that video.
Additional, I had an AE arc from a Malta contact who at one point hires you to retrieve a Zeus Titan designated C00-P XLR when it is stolen by a group of joyriding teenagers.
(they're made out of people) -
Give us strictly decorative versions of all the functional base items. The devs are using them as such in newer maps, why can't we?
-
I blame it all on this newfound obsession with "realism" in a character creator that just doesn't support it. Specifically pertaining to feet, you can't have a realistic-looking stiletto-heeled shoe, because putting heels on your character doesn't actually make her taller, it just shortens her calves. You can only make the heel so high before it looks odd. The old-school stilettos solve that problem by being unrealistic, and having tiny feet to give the illusion of a higher heel. The newer ones seem to try to solve it by ignoring what actual human feet look like. They have three options: go back to the stylized stilettos of old, stick with "high-ish" heels rather than high heels (and I wouldn't actually mind some chunkier heels, since the actual heel on these shoes also looks nothing like the heel on any shoe I've ever seen) or the monstrosities we've been getting. These ugly sandaled feet look much the same to me as the witch, Barbarian, and bridal feet, it's just so much more glaringly obvious how misshapen they are when the foot is bare.
