That's certainly an entertaining idea, Maelwys. I don't know if I could handle that playstyle, though. Your build would be an expensive respec and rebuild, and at this point, I already feel like I've wasted enough time and money on my fire/ice blaster. I don't know just how much I'd gain trying to optimize her more, because at the end of the day, it's just not as much fun as I'd hoped.
-
Every time I read your posts, Local_Man, I want to immediately jump on my baby ill/rad and finish leveling her. And your guide is phenomenal. I wish every power set had a cheerleader as thorough and exuberant as you are!

Quote:My first 50 and oldest toon is a DM/Regen. Nothing makes you appreciate proactive clicking like needing to hit Recon or DP during Shadow Maul's animation.
And I can see MA/FA being a very fun build. I may have to actually go back to playing scrappers again.Quote:You mean you don't think it will ever be fotm again . The first few years of this game it was shocking when you actually saw a scrapper that wasn't regen.. Oh, and sorry for the derail to Memory Ln.

Quote:I came to this sad realization recently myself. After requesting some advice on a fun and effective "right out of the box" blaster AT pairing, the almost unanimous suggestion was Fire/Ice. After getting her to 50 (and I was feeling the pangs of regret long before that) and outfitting her in a reasonably solid build, I just wasn't happy with the results. My performance in a group is fine, as is almost any Blaster's, but so far it's not been much fun solo. I dunno, it just seems like people overestimate the usefulness and mitigation properties of /ice, or they are remembering fire/ice from a different time.**Beware status quo line approaching**
I would recommend a new toon as the investment you would have to make into a fire/ice build. would be pretty substantial, and it still will not have the output of much better power selections.
I would love to see some recent, level 50 (as in played and tested at level 50, not "future") builds for fire/ice that don't break the bank, and are reasonably survivable and fun while solo. Not that I think this thread will attract them.

Alas, it is a little difficult for an insomniac. My deepest apologies. Internet snark seems easy enough, though.

Quote:If this pointless thread wasn't created with the intention of bragging about the acquisition of a small fortune the OP didn't really earn, then perhaps I missed some loftier message. And yeah, I'm sure a lot of us have been on the wrong end of a misbid, but to say "it's not that big a deal" is a pretty bold, hm, what's the word I'm looking for? Oh, right, assumption.Where does one start with a post like this? The assumption that farming is the way to wealth? The assumption that "you" (presumably us, the ebil marketers) are glorying over People Like Eloora? The assumption, for that matter, that "you" have never made that mistake? I've been on both ends of the misbid. It's not that big a deal.
Lighten up, Francis.
Quote:If you are trying to imply that the person in this case who accidentally bid 800 million instead of (presumably) 80 million was not swimming in inf... well I'm not sure I agree with you there. 800 million is a lot to me and this person had it available on that single toon when that bid was placed...
Is 800 million a lot now or does everyone have that much? I haven't been keeping up with inflation I guess... -
You might feel an amused sense of triumph when you win an accidental overbid, but there is a person on the other end of that anonymous transaction thta is probably very unhappy right now, and there is zero recourse for these errors. You can't reason with the seller, and CS won't help either. It's an easy mistake to make - I've done it myself in the past.
Not everyone is swimming in inf, BTW. Farming might be "easy" and rather commonplace, but it isn't something everyone wants to spend their play time doing. Just another perspective to keep in mind. -
OK, here's attempt #2. How does this look?

Quote:Thanks for the response, Postagulous. I do need to keep my build cheap - much cheaper than it is now. I'm fine with getting rid of the purps, and anything else extraneous that I could forgo, or put off until I can farm a bit more. The thing that strikes me as extravagant is slotting Apocalypse to get the 16% regen and the 10% recharge in Blaze, but if you're trying to build those, why not throw Entropics in Flares and Blast?
I like keeping it cheap, if possible, but, even if you didn't want to, those two Entropic sets, which would cost less than one Enh in Apoc, they'll give you more regen and rech than that Apoc set.
You really seem to be trying to build defense, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not working. You can cap this build [probably].
I'll do my default slotting style, which you may or may not like, and I'm sure others will poo-poo, and then I'll do a cap.
As I mentioned in the OP I am lousy at builds. Having just returned to the game, and having never messed with sets before, I'm not familiar at all with what's great, what works, and what's lousy. There also seems to be a distinct lack of recent or popular fire/ice builds for me to start from. Every other slotting I see is different.
I would like to be on the safe side with defense, although I hate having a bunch of toggles - especially with Inferno use. I wasn't shooting for a cap per se, though I'm happy to get as close as I can get without forgoing too much recharge or damage. I think I'd like to be a little more balanced, though, and get ranged def up a little higher, even if it means s/l is a little lower.
I noticed you took Ice Sword in your capped build. I assume that's just as a Kinetic set mule? I haven't really considered those kinds of options yet. I guess what I really need is a rundown of the best cheap and moderately priced slotting and set options for each power, with some pros and cons and associated build directions thrown in. Anyone wanna volunteer?
-
I decided to start a new thread since my first one isn't really focused on what I need anymore. I am working on my level 50 fire/ice/ice build, and I could use some feedback on it before I respec into it and start buying sets.
I'm not great at making builds, so this build is largely based on a friend's suggestions. I'm also nowhere near rich enough to afford half of it yet, so I am open to cheaper set exchanges that might be "good enough" to get by with. I don't plan to PvP. I predominantly play in a trio with a very well enhanced dark/dark defender, and a fresh 50 plant/rad troller. AM is almost always up, but I would like my build to stand on its own in terms of global recharge and end recovery. My focus is lots of AoE, solid ST damage for bosses, no blapping, but solid defense for the inevitable aggro. Anyways, here's the build:

Thanks! -
Welp, my fire/ice blaster is 43 now. I've been trioing mostly with the aforementioned exemplared D3 and equal level plant/rad troller. I feel like I plug the holes in our trio (pure non-control AoE, boss finishing ST damage) reasonably well, but I'm a little scatterbrained when it comes to builds.
I've taken everything in Fire/ except the snipe. I know RoF is a debatable power, but I enjoy true DoTs, which this game severely lacks. /Ice I'm....not all that enamored with TBH. Build Up and Shiver are great, and Ice Patch has saved my and my troller's skin a couple of times, but the area it covers is tiny, and it's weak on bosses, where we have the most trouble. Everything else I've either skipped or rarely use. Maybe I'm missing something, or need to change up my playstyle, I don't know.
Also, I took the Fire epic pool for Bonfire, which is kinda neat, but I'm not married to the set. This is the first blue side character with which I've been able to try the epic pools, so I have no experience with them. Thematically, fire, ice or force will work, so any opinions on the usefulness of powers in these sets will help for when I inevitably respec. -
Thanks for all of the help and suggestions guys! Fire/Ice definitely feels like a fun, safe choice, but a couple of other combos have recently caught my eye. Fire/Mental and Fire/Elec. How are those for ST burst? And AoE?
Also, If I do catch up to my friends (30'sish plant/rad troller and a 50 D3 leveled down), which might work the best with them? They seem to have it all covered but pure DPS and ST burst on non-held stragglers and bosses. -
Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I was wondering what exactly a shield/mace tanker's ultimate purpose is...what their focus should be. Like, if you picked SD and WM then your strengths are ________. I haven't been having the most fun leveling mine (other than whenever Shield Charge is up), so I'm trying to gain some perspective on the play style this set should be focusing on.

Well, since I am leveling my tanker with my friends, I'll probably try to grab other mission/TF/AE groups when I can, and solo the rest of the time. I definitely want my powers to be....all about me I guess you could say. A somewhat self-indulgent build that's just fast and fun and lethal.
I will go ahead and pick up Hasten. I am anxious to really get to know the new (to me) Blaster mechanic Defiance, and what skills complement it. I don't like the idea of living without a permanent travel power with vertical movement, so I'm hoping whatever build I come up with isn't so tight that I can't fit in hover/fly or whatever. -
I've gotten a fire/ice into the early teens, and so far so good. It's quite fun, and the damage is refreshing after having played everything BUT major damage dealing AT's for a while.
I am still a little hazy on the optimal power priority, especially from /ice, while leveling. I plan on skipping both melee attacks, but I've read some positive things regarding Chilling Embrace, which is really only useful at close range, so I dunno. I'm not so good with making decisions on "situational" powers, and there are seemingly so many in Blaster secondaries!
I haven't really decided what pool powers I should go for either. Hasten doesn't *seem* to be necessary here, although SS sort of works the best with my concept. I'm leaning toward my tried and true favorite hover/fly. I assume I'll want Stamina at some point. Other than that, what are the popular choices? Leadership and Fighting maybe? the D3 I roll with a lot has all 3 of the Leadership buffs, but they do stack right?
Any more thoughts on this are welcome.
Thanks. -
Thanks for the reply. I'm seriously leaning towards fire/ice ATM. It always seemed like a good pairing, but I could never come up with a costume/concept. Now that powers can be recolored, it's easier to reconcile odd power pairings (for those of us that actually care).

Greetings. I would like a little break from my shield/mace Tanker, so I'm considering rolling a Blaster. It's kinda slow, and not terribly exciting, so I really need to kick it up a notch. Also, I am recently back playing after a year off, and even then I hadn't played for long, so I'm not up on the latest Blaster info. I would love some suggestions on what sets might fit my needs
. Here are a few things I'm looking for.
Fun right out of the box. I don't intend to slot up with IO sets while leveling, and I'm a IO noob anyway, so I'd rather not have to mess with them to feel effective.
Fast! Fast activations and fast recharges are a plus. I don't like the feeling of just standing there, constantly waiting for powers to refresh. I want to stay relatively busy.
Good synergy of primary and secondary. I don't really know what pairs well together in terms of secondary effects and the like. I plan to team a lot (usually with a scrapper and plant/rad troller), but I don't want to be carrying around half of a toolset when solo either.
AoE! I love the carnage of area effect damage. The more, the better.
I more than likely don't want to play a "Blapper". I tend to like staying out of harms way, and would like the powers most fit to keep it that way.
Any advice on primary and secondary sets that might fit these criteria would be greatly appreciated. I'll be looking thru the various (outdated) guides in the meantime.
Thanks. -
OK I understand now. I was getting hung up on the part someone mentioned about their icon in the pet windows being the little target, which I thought appeared any time they attacked, rather than just when you order them to directly. So you don't have to keep them perpetually by your side, not attacking, you just have to not issue an attack command.

Can someone give an example of using BG mode? I haven't used it yet myself, but it sounds like any pets in BG mode can't attack at the same time, so are you just sacrificing their damage so they can soak up yours?
-
I'm in agreement that a totally petless MM would be pretty gimp. I mean it's not like you have much else to do, unless you have a particularly busy secondary you want to micromanage. That said, I wouldn't really fault a MM for only bringing out certain pets rather than all of them all the time. They can be a handful sometimes, but then that's to be expected with an MM.
On a slightly related note, I wish you could have more of one set of a certain kind of pet (like the Oni or Lich) instead of a set of each kind. If any of you played or were familiar with the Necromancer class in AoC, you had pet "points" that you could spend, up to 11, and each type of pet had a different cost, 2 points, 4 points each etc. Basically, if you just wanted a couple of your best pets out, you could do that. Or you could have even more lower cost pets out if you so chose.
I think it would offer another dimension of variety and customization to the game if a similar system was adopted for MM's. -
Nobody wants to chime in here? Am I wasting my time with this combo? I just need something to throw in Mid's to give me an idea of the right powers to take advantage of, and the general slotting I'm looking for, especially for my pets.
Even a link to a reasonably up-to-date guide I may have missed, or a build from another post, would be fine. -
I'm curious to see how everyone tends to build/slot their necro/storm build. I'm only 35 atm, but having a lot of fun.
So far I've taken everything in necro except DB and LD. Would like to keep at least one attack. LD seems like it would be handy considering I have no self heal, though.
Storm side I've got O2 boost, Gale, Mist, Rain and Hurricane. I don't have much experience with any storm powers beyond this point. Was wondering if I could drop O2 and take Aid Other and Aid Self. I have Hasten, Stamina and Leaping for pools so far.
Could anyone post a couple of builds for me? Just with SO's or generic IO's is fine.
Thanks -
This thread just drives home a slightly OT but annoying aspect of DM (and Soul Mastery, to a degree). Two of DM's hardest hitting "attacks" aren't attacks at all - they're....friggin arm stretches! Melee range "nukes" that don't have an even slightly cool nuke animation. And our coolest looking actual attack, Shadow Maul, is rarely used, and often skipped entirely.
Add Gloom to the mix, clearly deemed to be a necessity for maximum DPS (for a DM Brute, and many others) and your attack chain is nothing more than one lousy gut punch. Granted, Soul Mastery is a pool any AT can choose from, but still.
Are we directing traffic here, or are we melee damage machines?
OK rant over, but I am left wondering something. What would the best attack chain, and DPS, a DM scrap or brute could achieve using nothing but actual physical attacks, including pool powers? Keep Soul Drain in the equation of course. -
I've decided to try brute out for a bit. After reading through this thread I'm wondering something. SS and Stone seem to be quite close in damage, but they're both just smashing damage. If you consider your DPS against tougher foes that tend to have higher resistance to smashing damage, wouldn't one of the other primaries, like Fire or Energy, come out ahead when it really counts?

Yeah, I meant Mako's *blush*. I see that a lot in the expensive looking builds. Thanks for the suggestions, Umbral.
