All of the above.
And, I don't know that the other types of people do not exist here, but... I think there is something about the comicbook/superhero theme (most likely just the general populous of that fandom) that may help in fostering a nicer community as well as being forceful and backed enough to quiet down and/or simply downplay the attempts of others to cause negativity (more so than most other places, at least).
If I had to rate the potential reasons in order of significance/impact... It might be something like:
- Casual Game = casual atmosphere
- Super Hero influence
- Top-Down Effect... I think, as much as we are individuals and that the theme of the game fosters a greater community, the people at Paragon Studios (and their iterations beforehand) have been a large part in displaying (thus influencing and maintaining) those greater, personable and kind qualities.
- Because I'm here!!
I think there's a bit more intellect here maybe, on average, as well. And that counts for a lot. -
I'm not from Guardian, but...
*big friendly hugs*
The great thing you're doing though, is expressing yourself and being honest. That is truly great and always a great sign.
And Lisa, along with many other things the others have said, is right on.
And smiling and laughter is amazing medicine.
Just in case you, or anyone else, gets some smiles from this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYxgjJK7kD0 I'm sharing it.
Harpo and Chico Marx playing the piano together... something about their absolutely incredible musical skills and their comedic skills and just their characters' innocence (well, Harpo, at least) just makes me gush, hehe.
Certainly are funnier routines of theirs... they really make me laugh... but may not be your cup of tea. Still, I doubt many would not find enjoyment from that clip.
Anyway, seek out some laughter. Sometimes, honestly, I just force myself to smile, regardless of how I feel. And even just that helps more than you generally suspect.
Also know that any comfort you found from this game, will exist in you and outside of you regardless if this game goes down or not.
Still... we'll all do what we can to prevent this injustice from occurring...
Okay, enough from me!
*more hugs*
Also, Gothica... thank you for reaching out and speaking honestly. You are not alone in how you feel. And it helps us when others articulate our own feelings and situations as well. -
Quote:*sigh* Still too early for me to point it out!Sounds bad. Who's acranaville?
Also, I'm running out of different tricks for all-caps: I've been using a different one each time.
No, I have no idea why I started that stupid joke by myself, but I am going to stick to it, okay??
"I have one job on this lousy ship, it's stupid, but I'm gonna do it, okay!?!" -
Typical New Yawkuz... Tons of people, but no one's interested in each other.
Haha, still feelin' this out! -
Busy day today, myself, but had to offer my quick and sincere THANK YOU!!!!!

Quote:Hey look...Was wondering why none of this was familiar to me but assumed it was before my time. That was about the time my mobo finally died. The beignning of a dark 4 months!

This character is an Elec/Invuln Brute, and no, nobody was buffing me.
Any clue if those pics were from September 30th, 2011, Dispari?
I remember now, (multiple) crab backpacks appearing for some powers (I think defensive toggles, not sure)... claws appearing for other things... tentacles for... maybe for sprint or something. It was awesomely bizarre.
Surprised no one else has mentioned it. -
Oh, you forgot to mention that they answered my important question...
About whether they like movies about gladiators.
And they added a bonus question and answer about staying in a Turkish prison (Not recently, apparently). -
- Save your costume at the in-game tailor
- Go to your City Of Heroes---> Costumes folder (That's the default folder created by the game that stores all of your saved costumes as small text files - Default location would be " C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\costumes ")
- Find the costume (under the name that you saved it in-game as - eg "Ironik01A.costume")
- You can either open that file (first time you'll have to choose what program, use notepad) Or just attach that file through your email.
- Most email applications have an "attach" button when you compose a message. That will open up a window that lets you browse through your computer, where you can get to "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\costumes and the specific costume file you want to send.
Hopefully that helps!! Don't anyone be shy to ask for more help with that.
I know sometimes different operating systems can make it a bit different, but that should work for ya. -
Haha!
And yeah, I plan to be patient on this. We'll let people see it and respond for a while before we pinpoint exactly when and all.
With the forums and all of us being in this state of crazy right now, it can be difficult to keep track of everything. -
Just checking, would the demo capture of the character help you more? Or you just want the costume and info?

Quote:Awesome! If I mention the NY Rangers in negative light... it's only out of love.I'm about 40 minutes outside Albany and might consider going down to the city for something like this.
I was there too! I really failed to meet a lot of the players that did make it to there. I blame it being an entire NCSoft thing and not just CoH... plus, I don't think we had name tags or anything. Oh, and I blame myself a little as well! -
There are two major possibilities, one far more realistic than the other.
Animator:
I have always had a knack for animation. I imagine it is something to do with timing and perhaps just experience with ti when I was young. We had 8mm film cameras and I used to do stop motion animation and cut out animation... then, many years later, I took some classes about 2D cell animation.
My music career has always gotten in the way, but, just a few years ago, I was giving serious thought about stepping away from that industry and focusing on computer animation and/or possibly getting involved in the video game industry.
I ended up sticking to music, but I will, one day, begin studies on computer animation as I have many projects (even based around my musical career) that involve a lot of animation work.
I often wonder how happy I'd be working in a video game studio, but I'll never know unless I ever try it... Would be interesting to find out.
World/Content Designer:
The other thing is that I have long been an idea man. In this field, I think this position is way out of my league, because i have no experience and zero skill sets to work up the ladder. So, that's why it is extreme pie in the sky, at this point in time.
Still... I've always been skilled at (and I think it is because I love it) leading, inspiring, task-mastering, coordinating and maintaining artistic and design focus of groups of artists.
My dream job at Paragon Studios would be to create, design and fancy ideas, work them out with others and oversee each team's efforts, making decisions, problem-solving and such along the way.
For some reason... musical score for the game just doesn't interest me so much... even though scoring film is something I love. I just tend to stick with rock instruments and rougher things these days and have not been focused on orchestral soundtrack type stuff. I don't know... I think I've gotten too expressionistic to enjoy doing the precision work these types of projects tend to expect from the music.
Blah blah blah... How about just paid-couch-loafer?
Oh... Character creator. I love designing characters, creating their backgrounds, concepts, motives, personalities and story arcs. Love it. Pay me to do it? I'd be in paradise. -
Also, if anyone from Paragon Studios will just happen to be in the New York area any time soon, PLEASE let us know and we can arrange the date around you!!
I know that is not likely, but I just wanted to mention it just in case.

Hey everyone... this is being typed rather impromptu and is just a feeler and declaration that I would absolutely love to spend some time with anyone and everyone that could make it to a party, meet and greet, rally, fun time in the New York area (I'm thinking New York City, but it could easily be in NY, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, possibly Massachusetts)... I imagine that several different meet and greets could spawn from this discussion (at the farther reaches of each of those states, plus others, I am sure... like the DC/Maryland gang that I didn't get to meet up with last time).
New York City would be good, as the people from the city (who may have no cars) could get there, as opposed to most of the other locations.
Still, anything and everything is open for discussion. If it gets too whacky, I'll start making decisions and just invite people, but I'd rather talk, discuss and see what we can figure out together.
Possible bigger goal... it could be great to arrange multiple CoH Community parties around the world on the same date... maybe skype in with each other and connect!
Bottom line, I would love to get together, meet, talk, have a good time with so many of the people of our community that I know live near here (I'm in New York).
No creepiness, we're all family here and I know I won't stand for any negativity!!So, do not be scared to attend, no matter who you are!
Would love to see those I've met in Boston and NY previously... and so many more who I haven't met before.
Chime in! Let me know what you think!
While smaller get-togethers often go more easily and can be more affordable... I'd love to have a really huge bash, to be honest. We'll see what discussion and feedback leads to though.
Keep it positive, please!!
P.S. I'd also love to head out west for one big HeroCon-ish M&G some time. Given the situation and the fact that I think I could swing it right now... I'd be able to fly over for it (with enough warning). Especially if I could swing a paying gig while I'm over there!
ANYWAY... First Focus: NY AREA MEET AND GREET - Who would like to be in on that?? -
Quote:Agreed, but that's not looking too hard for a positive sign. I mean, it's meager, from Z's point of view (understandably), but yeah... I'd be completely shattered if they just opened up the market and went that far. That would be the end, I'm sure. The most (perhaps only) optimistic thing I took from it was that they said they would definitely NOT make everything on the Market free. So long as they're trying to maintain 'business as usual' with the ingame economy and more importantly the F2P model, maybe it's still viable for another backer to take over. From that point of view I guess we'd have more to worry about if they did give us everything for nothing.
I dunno, maybe I'm really reaching for a positive spin. I don't think anyone's coming away from this more optimistic, but that's not Z's fault. Kudos to him and the others for still showing up.
Sad to watch this though. -
Thanks, Obsidius!
Keep fighting and pushing, everyone. Whether or not it works, you'll be happier for doing everything you could. -
Also, another thing to mention to possibly help outsiders relate: relating this community based around this pastime can be paralleled with the fanbase around a professional sports franchise. Ask Cleveland Browns fans and Baltimore Colts fans how insignificant that was, just on an emotional level.
Thanks! -
Oh, that wouldn't bug me much at all.
That's one of the greatest things about this game: there's not really a bunch of stuff that I have/need. Just the costumes, the powers and the levels. Influence/Infamy and enhancements come as you play and I guess this is where my weird playstyle of not using any Set Bonuses and such really makes starting over no problem...
The only thing that'd mess me up pretty badly is... My bases... But... that's life! -

Quote:My name is The Electric-Knight (not really) and I approve of this message (really)....
All of that said, I'll be there, even make a new character for it. But I won't show up as a Paragon City developer. If I'm going to show support for the studio and the game, I wan to do this as "myself." I know I've said many times that Samuel Tow is just a character I made - my first, in fact - whose name I borrowed, but he was the first and only I actually identified with, back 10-15 years ago when my parents were going through a yelling divorce and I needed an outlet for some of my darker feelings. If I want to show up as "myself," Sam is the face I put on, because he's the closes I have to it. He's the only one I've ever been recognised as, and he's been lying forgotten all too long.
Sam needs a new costume, he needs a new sword, and he needs to be used more. Now that I don't have to worry about Incarnate to-hit or Super Reflexes or Inventions or all the other game-wise challenges that kept me playing other characters, I want to resurrect Sam and show up as him. I may not win a costume contest with him, but that's fine. I'm not there to win. I'm there to show support. For the studio, yes, but in my eyes, for the game more than anything else.
"City of Heroes is a place where dreams are born" has become sort of my motto since the notice of foreclosure, and that's the part of the game I most want to emphasise. I want to show people that this is a place where our imagination can run wild and produce things you just don't see anywhere else.
I'll be on the lookout for ya, Sam. -
Don't stare too long at your dreams... there's much work to do in order to make them come true!
