Well, updating with the regular 10.4 suite did not work (very familiar results for some of us ATI [perhaps only the AGP crowd] users).
Following the steps of Removing all ATI and CCC applications and drivers then rebooting in safe mode and running Drive Cleaner (And the Cab Cleaner Tool before running the actual drive cleaner), then rebooting and installing the 10.4 Drivers resulted in the Catalyst Control Center simply not starting up (Basically it did not install) when clicking to open it up.
So, I wiped everything again and followed all of the same steps, but this time installed the 10.4 Hotfix suite for AGP cards having issues...
And... I am rebooting it now and waiting to see what the results are...
And, woohoo, success!
CCC is there and functioning.
Yay, that went easily.
Dumpleberry... save a restore point and then give it a shot.
Download Driver Cleaner Pro
Disconnect your computer from the internet and leave it disconnected.
Then use add/remove programs to remove each and every ATI and Catalyst Control Center program.
Then even go and manually delete any ATI files you can find (Check your ATI Technologies folder and anything else in the Program Files folder).
Empty the recycling bin.
Restart into Safe Mode (F8 while rebooting).
Cancel out of the hardware auto install.
Open Driver Cleaner Pro's read me and follow the steps (Or just follow these steps, as they are the same).
Run Driver Cleaner Pro... Select Tools and run the Cab Cleaner.
Let is clean and then when it is done, close it.
Add every ATI and CCC option in the Driver Cleaner Pro filters and run the cleaner.
Empty the recycling bin.
Restart the computer (Still with no internet... windows will be pesky and possibly install the drivers it thinks you want otherwise... I didn't make this up, so if it is false, don't blame me... it's simple enough to stay offline when doing this, so why not).
Run the 10.4 Installer (The regular suite did not work for me, but the hotfix one that BZB linked to did). I chose to do the custom install, even though I allowed all the default options to be installed anyway.
After it is finished, restart the computer...
And... hopefully... you will have a nice new updated CCC installed!
Feel free to connect to the internet and have some fun!
I hope this helps.
I know I've gone mad over hours and hours and hours of uninstalling and installing and it not working before I followed these steps and used driver cleaner pro. Even still... without the modified 9.12 suite that some other user created for AGP cards... it wouldn't have worked back then. And, seemingly, it wouldn't have worked for me this time around without using that hotfix install (Although, it may have just been that I didn't eliminate each and every ATI file the first time around... I was a bit more thorough the second time around, so that could have been the real reason... I am not going to experiment to find out right now, hehe).
Thank you very much BZB!
Now let's see if the CoH crashing stops for me...
EDIT: Oh shoot... Just realized Dumpleberry isn't using the 3800 like me... Hrm, well, the steps should still work, not sure about which driver file you would need though. I hope this helps any other AGP ATI user though! -
Quote:Thanks BZB,EK, Dumpleberry, did yall see this link when trying to get your drivers directly from ati.amd.com?
For graphics cards, I noticed the Series 3XXX AGP and it links to this page:
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...AGPHotfix.aspx
I will post the outcome when I muster the courage to do this (Which may be in a bit).
And yeah, Dumpleberry, I know that ville...
Hehe, my wife just told me she is going to stay at her sister's if I am going to upload new drivers again
Although, with the Cleaners and Sweepers and all that... it shouldn't be a problem. If the drivers don't work properly, I still have the modified 9.12 drivers to go back to.
We shall see (Looks like they have some help for us).
Thanks again... will report back! -
Billz, this thread did me so much good over the years and I'm not sure if I've posted in here to thank you before, but I'm thanking you now regardless. So glad to see the water quality issue gone along with all the other long standing issues! No longer do I need to feel disappointed that I went for an ATI card when my main game was CoH.
Now...
Last time I updated my drivers (9.12) for my 3850HD AGP it was a bit of a nightmare.
I think it was mostly due to some problem with the AGP interface/support and I had to use someone's custom modified file in order to have it finally work (Dumpleberry, could this be your issue?)
So, I'm just asking you far more knowledgeable helpful blokes if these latest drivers will work with the AGP models and/or if there's anything else I should know (Besides that I should get a new motherboard and get a PCIE card, etc).
My quick bit of searching hasn't led me to any news or information about the AGP models and these drivers... Which could be good news as well. -

GREAT... I guess it is time for me to park all of my characters for the next 40 months so that I can be on equal footing as the rest of the players!!1!!
Caution for the humor impaired: The above commentary is not entirely serious. In fact, it is 100% facetious.
Caution for those with limited vocabulary: facetious means "IT AIN'T SERIOUS, YOU WANKERS!" -
Happy Anniversary!
Best game on the market!
(I hope the patch goes well today)

I usually ignore such stuff, but it is often fun when you or someone else can translate anything into a bit of creative rationalization.
A dear friend of mine, and great role-player, had to deal with some rather craptastic satellite ISP and it constantly rubberbanded her to a crippling degree...
She turned it around for some rather immersive content at one point.
Her character's teleport and recall friend powers actually represent her very small and limited control of time manipulation. She slows or freezes time for herself and moves normally, but it is a jump to others (relatively).
She developed a feud with my main villain, Malfaz - a demented psychic dominator.
Through battling with her nemesis, and counseling other victims of his, combined with all of her character's issues, her powers began to become erratic.
During this period, her rubberbanding was actually her powers acting out of her own control... It was a great bit of adaptation on her part as well as character development, because her character was truly going nuts... And the combined frustration of the player in real life and of the character's fed each other wonderfully. -
I experienced this in test and bugged it. I was hoping it was more to do with the test server or something.
Can you tell us what your specs are?
I'm curious if it has anything to do with the graphics card and some sort of compatibility issue.
Standard suggestion... check and see if you have the latest updated drivers.
I'm on an ATI Radeon 3850HD AGP and was very pleased (And surprised) with being able to handle Ultra Mode with settings beyond what I had hoped... But I experienced crashing on Test... I'm hoping that I won't on live...
Best of luck!! :/ -
Well said Sam. I know that feeling and share it!
Quote:Hah, zero negativity here!I'll say it and risk getting more neg rep for defending the MA but it makes me happy.
I seriously love working up missions there - so much that right now I don't even have a "main toon" I'm playing. With my limited time online I pretty much only work on creating and play-testing missions there unless a friend is on and wants to team (which only happens about a third of the time I log in).
People can rage against the MA, gnash their little bitty teeth over the temporary nerf and hold their breath till they turn blue for all I care. I'm having fun and nothing they can say is going to change what I like.
MA is one of the most wonderful things they've ever done for me and many of my in-game friends.
I've done and been a part of so many damn cool things using the MA in ways nothing else could have even come close to accomplishing.
I love the MA.
My personal list might be:
- Ragdoll Physics
- Being able to come up with a concept and find that it totally works (Over and over)
- Great costumes and characters in action under my control
- MA
- Super Side Kicking (Not having to worrying about matching levels among friends and just being able to let anyone and everyone use their first choice, no matter the level)
- Lack of items/loot deciding effectiveness and being able to have my character(s) look how I want
-
I just have a hard time coming up with ideas specifically for booster packs... as I'd just like to see anything I can think of added to the game in a regular issue or so...
So, my answer is, anything that they can't squeeze in otherwise...
(Not starting an anti-booster rant, just saying, I can't find the motivation to join in... But carry on please! Just... Devs? If you can... Please put it in without a booster!) -
This might sound strange, but...
Before I ever played this game, I would occasionally browse these forums.
I don't recall what originally led me here, but what I found was good enough to make me come back now and then...
And I found this thread (I think it may even have been stickied eventually)... I cannot remember the title of it, I hope someone remembers...
The OP was about how every time they post, they kill the thread (People no longer post in it).
It became the thread that never dies.
I thought it was both such a beautiful thing and a very humorous thing.
I'm pretty sure I found it through the Dev Tracker, no less.
Another thread that I found before playing that I would nominate would be one the generic thread where someone posted everything in a third person sample of what would be a typical post...
Which was followed by an equally clever reply done in the same fashion, which was replied to similarly, and so on and so on and so on...
When a Dev responded with the same style and wit... I knew I would be playing this game one day.
While going through the nightmare of SOE and the SWG debacle... I used to visit these forums and enjoyed my time here so much. It was sort of like getting out of the house and spending time with a really super cool family... wishing my household could be the same.
I'm very glad to have been adopted into it now.
(Even if I had to pay my way in... Wow, bad analogy!!)
So, anyways... If anyone can find those threads and/or remember their names, I'd be very grateful!
(Also, some great suggestions already that I agree with!)

obligatory anti-Emmert remark from GG
[It just feels wrong for it to not be there] -
Or the difference is just simply FDA regulations... hehehe...
<.<
No, hehe. Interesting subject. I honestly haven't gone this route with any characters of my own... I do have a normal guy who becomes possessed by a super hero from a magic comicbook... but that's it.
I probably would never do such a character concept without side effects, negative drawbacks, or disadvantages. -
-
-
I'm a concept player all the way...
However, I really haven't ever run into any problems with it.
I've had a natural archery/devices with no travel power.
Although, slotted sprint and hurdle is actually a pretty good travel power... plus ninja run now and I feel like I'm cheating the concept, actually, hehe... Although, it still feels right for the character, just a bit too effective (I might un-slot sprint and hurdle, hehe).
Honestly, I always imagined he used grappling hooks and whatnot... So, Super Jump may have worked, but I enjoy the sprint/hurdle build and it provides that fun bit of challenge getting from rooftop to rooftop that Super Jump makes super easy.
I've definitely made characters less effective due to concept... As in not picking certain pool powers that would be better numbers-wise.
Shield Defense / Super Strength Tanker taking Jump Kick and not taking Combat Jumping purely for concept/style reasons. Not just the build... But there is no reason ever for me to use Jump Kick... Yet, I do for the visual flavor.
Actually, that's probably more where concept over numbers comes into play for me... how I play, not so much my build.
The same SD/SS character avoids getting wet at all costs.
I don't really bend my character's personalities to fit into just playing the game. I truly enjoy playing the character and witnessing that character going through whatever the session throws at him. If I am not doing that... I'd probably rather not play
Anyways... Concept driven build, always for me. However, most of my concepts have fit nicely with the powersets and the game.
And my main is an Electric/Electric/Electric Blaster (Blaptroller) So... I'm used to adapting and whatnot.
Quote:And this, 100%This is CoX. You really have to go way out of your way to make a character truly "unplayable". Flexibility FTW!
Quote:...
I prefer playing and teaming with RP'ing/concept toons by a long shot. Even if they're unorthodox to the point of being counterproductive, it just sets the bar higher. Adapting is what makes this game fun (for me), not cycling through chains of attacks. Also forcing powers into your existing concept is quite fun, bends the imagination...
I think we'd enjoy you playing with us at The Paragon Universe
And anyone else here that'd be interested, of course.
Not that anyone needs to join to play with us, not at all!
If you play on Virtue, give a shout!

I could list a few... but the biggest and definitely most common aspect of this game that makes me smile, laugh and simply enjoy myself so much is...
Ragdoll physics.
Quote:I'm so glad I tried this game after ragdoll physics was already implemented.Ragdoll physics. One of the older additions to the game that really made it look and feel better.
I've always felt that I may not have stayed otherwise.
It truly adds this invaluable level of enjoyment to my playing.
Quote:You know how sometimes the ragdoll physics glitches and enemies get stuck in things? Once, on I think my dom, I knocked a guy back and he stuck to the edge of the platform I was standing on. Thing is, the anchor point happened to be one of his hands... so it ended up being the really stereotypical "dramatic have mercy save me halp halp" scene. Until I stomped his fingers.
That made me happy!
So awesome!
Quote:Ragdoll Physics. One of my favorite examples is during a Croatoa mission, any Croatoa mission, where you are fighting on that giant hill. To jump into hordes of Redcaps and then knock them all over the place is fun enough, but combining it with the fact that after a knockback they would slide 20 or 30 feet past you was a recipe for hilarity.
Woohoo, it makes me happy just thinking about it!! -
Quote:You know... just for the record, you made it "one or the other" (jokingly or not) in your previous post, hehe.ur doin it rong.
There's your ignorant assumption. It's not one or the other. Most people use Facebook to stay in contact WITH their real friends since their real friends tend to have jobs, school, and families of their own... Thus leaving very little time for meet ups at Denny's.
Look, haters, lovers and all in-between, recognize these words...
Whatever vehicle used, it is all the same thing.
Letters, telephones, emails, myspaces, blogs, facebook, blah blah blah...
Yes, there are differences to each and every one of these things, but they are all just tools that some may enjoy using, some may not. Some may use well, some may not. Someone's definition of how to use such a tool well or poorly may be different than another's.
It's rather simple.
Someone can defend any of these tools with how they use it for better social interaction while another could suggest that greater interactions such as you speak of can be attained without the use of facebook or any other of these popular tools...
In the end, it doesn't matter.
Myself? I like person to person interaction. Not simply in-person... but... if I want to know what's going on... or if I want to share what's going on with someone... I prefer to make the effort to do so in my own way.
I don't care if someone else prefers to do such things via any modern (Or archaic) tools... Whatever works, works.
So, don't dismiss not using any of these tools... and don't dismiss using these tools.
If you do... just realize that... you're all just tools. *drum hit*
Have a nice day.
Contact me personally if you really wish to tell me about it. I'm not going to look it up to see how your day was, haha (But I'm glad if you have other people that enjoy doing it that way, so yay for us all). -
Funny... as someone who has stayed completely away from the multi-aspect enhancements... I have definitely wondered about similar things... And recently have been glancing at things and planning to take a look at the numbers... I always figured I'd lose some numbers in order to gain other numbers through the usage of these inventions... However, I've been curious to find out if I was incorrect... And, thus far, I have eluded such a discovery even when hanging around Dechs
It sort of makes sense that I'd get the numbers from a thread started by someone in a similar mindset like Sam...
*covers eyes and ears*
*begins chanting softly to himself*
I do not want to spend time sorting through invention enhancements...
I do not want to spend time sorting through invention enhancements...
I do not want to spend time sorting through invention enhancements...
Bah... Thanks a lot Sam!!
So... all these people saying that the earth is round might be right? *sigh* -

Mind you, I also see a difference between...

"Hey, you got knocked out, here let me give you an awaken."
I'm the same.
Enhancements and inspirations are sort of an abstract game mechanic element.
For me, within a single session, they could mean any number of things.
An enhancement might be the result of some hard training paying off in better performance/skill... it might be a tweak in technology... It might not even register as anything happening at all. And it doesn't matter what origin the character is, the concepts can have varied reasons for the different changes.
Inspirations are something I rarely have played as something that my characters actually have as tangible items.
As someone who used to play the old Marvel tabletop RPG,if I allow myself to think on inspirations, they remind me more of how karma points were used in that game (Though not fully).
To me, they can be what the name implies... inspiration.
When the moment is dire and the character needs to find that little bit more of strength or will or whatever in order to break free, hit harder, catch his breath or whatever... Inspirations might represent that.
Or, the very same things could be a technological or magical component... who knows! It's sort of an abstract to play with (And/or avoid/ignore) however you want to for your own character.
I just think it is important, as RPers, to respect that last bit... For your own character.
Inspirations might be pills, tools, biochemical reactions, injections, magic potions, magic charms, endless possibilities... But no one should assume that everyone else only sees them as the same thing (And that holds true for them being simply colored items that you randomly get off of fallen enemies).
I respect other people's interpretations so long as they respect others' interpretations. It's really not that difficult.
And yeah... Spider-Man would not go to a store to increase his strength... And he would also improve his web-shooters differently than he would his leaping abilities (Yes, sticking to the web-shooters being technology for that example). -
Quote:Obviously, you play by the rules that you choose to, as do other players. And that's perfectly fine, so long as people respect each other's choices and whatnot (Some choice can over-step other people's though, and that is where problems might occur).Hey I didn't make the rules! I just play by them!
...
I don't RP enhancements as tangible things either. They can be sometimes, but the majority of the time they are other things - blessings from gods, mutations, spells, combat training, etc, etc.
However, you don't play by all of the rules, as enhancements are tangible things.
They don't "make perfect sense" like your next post states. You've skipped major aspects... Enhancements are tangible items that fall off of your defeated foes and land in your own personal storage.
Most of us, you and I included, skip certain aspects of different things in order to fit it into what makes enjoyable sense to ourselves (And, hopefully, with respect to others).
Enhancements can be what they are in game or something far different...
I tend to treat such game mechanics as abstract elements that don't really play into the RP. It is completely different for different characters. However, I do not refuse RP of a character that follows what is in the game to a tee. That being said, I don't kowtow to that being the demanded conceptual umbrella that we all must play under. If your character goes to the shop to enhance his/her powers, so be it. If mine doesn't, so be it. Both can co-exist.
Quote:Enhancements make perfect sense as I've outlined in my prior posts. Many of the natural ones have training style names. Many of the mutant ones have mutation style names. Many of the scientific ones have chemist style names. Many of the magical ones are trinkets/spells/blessings that would fit a magical character. Enhancements are the things we don't see in comics - the things that happen off screen. Basic maintenance of a superheroes powers.
It's not possible. Similar to how it's not possible to have a concept that makes you as tall as a building, walk through walls, or duplicate yourself. The game is limited by the system, as are the concepts we can create.
It is the fault of the author for creating concepts that do not fit the powersets. It is not the fault of the system. It is one thing to claim that recoloured dark blasts are actually water blasts, that's fine and dandy, but it is something else to claim that in-game enhancements DON'T EXIST. That is godmodding of the highest caliber. You are actively telling me that my characters are not able to do something that is supported both by the game system and the game's lore.
If you are intent on "changing the rules", then don't expect people to agree with you. That said, Don't take my criticism too seriously. I know a lot of RPers like to circumvent the enhancement system, text fight in Pocket D, play "peacebringers than aren't peacebringers", and do all manner of different things not supported by the game's system/lore. There's nothing wrong with it. It's only a game after all and "OMG SUPER STRICT RP RULEZ YOU HAF 2 FOLLOW" would be a retarded idea.
I just personally find it more interesting to play with what we have, rather than try and make up something we don't.
I cannot speak for BrandX, but I don't think the point was telling others what anyone else can or cannot do.
You and I are more in agreement in how we actually do things than we may be in discussing the theoretical aspect of it. I'm certainly against people dictating their own rules unto others. And some of the game mechanic rules, actually, fall into that category for me (Pocket D, however, is a NO Fight Zone. I'm respectful enough of certain aspects where the game mechanics reasonably meet the lore).
I can only speak for myself in that there is a big difference between personally ignoring vs. refusing game mechanics (Or whatever other RP concept considerations one can think of).
I don't think concepts beyond the game mechanics are anything to be "faulted" for... I, personally, do not (Have not) created a character that is 50 stories tall... Nor have I played with anyone attempting to play such a concept... However, I would not refuse it out of hand and do not have an issue with them doing so.
I do, myself, to prefer to come up with concepts that can be represented well enough... but that "well enough" is a personal descriptor that I can't expect anyone and everyone else to match.
Anyway, I understand and agree with the last bit in your post.
Your insistence that you followed the rules and game mechanics is not entirely accurate. -

Yeah, certain elements, game mechanics, story arcs, whatever else, can be ignored, hand-waved, written-over with something else... I'm not sure what the problem is.
Well, I think I do, but whatever... heh.
No, no wait... so you're saying...??
Yeah. *shrugs* Got a problem with that? Too bad, hehe.
<.<

And yeah... So, Wolverine walks into the Science Store and says, "Hello, I would like to have my bones coated with adamantium, thank you very much".
The science store clerk says, "Sure, here you go"
However... Oh NO! Wolverine cannot use the adamantium coating because he is MUTANT origin!! Oh noes!!!
So, Wolverine goes to the mutant store and says, "Hey, I'd like you to coat my bones in adamantium, please, thank you very much bub".
The mutant store clerk says, "Well, we cannot coat your bones in adamantium, sorry. Did you try the science store? Oh, right... never mind... Well, what we can do is sell you these Catalyst Resist Damage enhancement things that will further alter your genetic mutation to resist damage... And sorry, we don't accept American Express".
Wolverine pops out a claw and points it animatedly at the clerk while replying, "I want adamantium bones! Haven't you ever heard the customer is always right?"
Wolverine receives a tell from Gambit, "invite me plz"
Wolverine decides to go to Wentworths where he bids all his... public standing... to purchase Damage Resistance Invention Enhancements [And Damage Invention Enhancements as well, since adamantium would cover his claws!] that were crafted and anonymously put up for auction by Dr. Cornelius.
Wolverine since lost his memory of these events... No wonder why.
Turns out I've been playing this game all wrong.
Most of my characters also do not disappear whenever I log out, do not know they are controlled through a mouse and keyboard used by a human sitting in a chair, that they never actually use the bathroom... And very few of them suspect anything suspicious about the tangibility of the blimp in Atlas Park.
I need to review the rulebook to how to play apparently!
