Yeah, it's like your "cart".
I like "wishlist" over "cart", so there!
You could call it... "saved items"... "reserved"... Booo, "wish" is better.
And yeah... Keep it "wishlist" and make things giftable and such in the future, win, win, win... Well, except nobody will ever buy me anything, because I'm just that person with that annoying forum avatar thingy...
Also... some wishes are meant to be kept to yourself.
Like your birthday wishes, before you blow out the candles.
And like a whole bunch of other wishes that I can't tell you about...
Secret stuff!!
Speaking of Birthday Cakes... it was my birthday and, since there was no cake beneath my name... hardly anyone (in these forums) knew!
I'm thinking Zwill needs to bring the cakes back to our forums.
No lie and no pie... These forums need cake. -
Some good info in here and such, thanks for a good read...
I just wanted to comment on this main aspect of the thread:
Quote:Not just to Deus, he just summed things up there:I think most people just didn't agree that it costs a ton, or requires sacrifices.
...
The cost is based on entirely subjective things. To some, those extra powers don't mean much, if anything at all, while, to others, they mean a great deal.
I've been battling many decisions like this with other characters.
I could improve these numbers by dumping powers that I enjoy having (because they are fun and make me smile and also come in useful now and then) in order to pick up other powers in order to add some valuable percentage points.
Not everyone is going to agree on the "cost", because we all value different things based on our own preferences.
I value visuals, silliness, concept more than the pure numbers.
It doesn't make me greater or lesser than anyone else in our mutual enjoyment of this video game pastime (not that anyone was putting anyone else down... it just happens often enough that it is worth stating).

Welcome to the game and I'm glad you and your wife are enjoying it!
It's a fair list and I'd say it looks pretty damn positive!
The negatives aren't really that huge, so congratulations on finding a fun game!
I hope you keep finding it more and more fun!
And never hesitate to ask questions around here.
People generally trip over each other i effort to answer and help, hehe!

It is all about in-between animations, not the rest of the animations themselves.
All of the powers' animations BEGIN from the already supported character stances within the game.
The WALK stance has the character in a different pose and, therefore, there would be an awkward visible jump (like a couple of frames clipped out of a movie) if a character were to go from WALKing to Fighting.
So, there were two options (discounting both simply not implementing any kid of WALKing and doing all of the animation work that would be necessary to make it look right):
Grey out all powers and such
Or
Allow the choppy disconnected character animations going from WALK to using powers
As a player, I could live with having the choppiness, considering the absolutely rare happenstances that this would ever come up with...
However, the artists viewed it more as something that would be unacceptable and I can certainly understand that.
I'd love to see what it would actually look like. Actually, I suppose I could Demo Edit that in order to see.
Adding this tidbit... For all I know, there could be even more problems (within the coding of the powers) than just the actual animations hurdle. There may not be, but it is possible and I just figured I'd state that I understand this before someone else throws it at me, hehe! -
Quote:Yeah, if there is no customization with the rocket board, it goes form something I was excited about to something I won't be getting.Honestly, while I like the idea of the rocket/hoverboard thing and can appreciate the work that went into making the model and getting the functionality of the power down, I would have liked to have seen something a bit more flexible as far as a theme. A flying energy disk or elipse could have a tech, magic, or meta origin. If we could customize the tint of it, even better.
...
I do not offer that as snarky negativity, just as (hopefully helpful) feedback!
I think it is great and I am sure plenty of people will use it as is, but character themes, conceptually and visually, are paramount to me (which is why this game is so great for me). -
Haha, whew... I was going ot say that I'll be out of town that Saturday...
Although, now I realize I'll miss on a Saturday of double prestige...
Ah well, hehe!
I just don't wanna miss some good RP event, for sure! -
Quote:Seriously this, a thousand times, this....
Lastly, Id like to say that if a variety of animated costume piece jetpacks for the new backpack slot arent available in the game soon after the release of i21, I will hold my breath until I turn blue. This is probably the last arena where I really get frustrated with development, triply so whenever I see a redname paraphrasing the give players what they want dictum from years back. Players have wanted these as costume pieces since beta. Theyve been requested thousands of times. It is long overdue.
Backpack pieces, akin to Rocket Boots, that fire up when flying/hover.
Other ones that do the same for jumping.
Also, I imagine that they are waiting for the full release of the Paragon Store and will drop the boom with such things. -
Quote:See, that's just awesome....
The most interesting thing for me, reading all of this talk about iceslides, is that the idea seems to have a surprising amount of support. Would all of you really want an iceslide before, say, other flying platforms, some kind of mount, etc.? Let us know what you're dying to see in game!
I honestly don't have an answer for this, as I feel equally about either/or and/or anything else I can come up with.
I do want to see FX options for all forms of travel (hopefully through power customization): Flight using Dark Energy, Electricity, Light Energy, etc. just representing the different powers in the game and using those sorts of FX instead of just the default/current effect.
Anyway... not your territory...
I will say this... The Prestige Slide (and ice/snow sliding) is awesome and should be used elsewhere and in more ways.
I want a color-customizable cloud for the Prestige Slide... And I think you guys should absolutely come up with more ways to use that animation (even Power Customization for Super Speed and Flight). Heck, I can already use the slide animation with Super Speed and it is AWESOME. Let us get rid of the FX of Super Speed and the FX of the Prestige Slide and add ice or whatever other energy you want and you already have quite an awesome option in game!!
Yeah... I can't seem to talk about this stuff without reverting back to Power Customization, haha... -
Okay... I am totally confused........
If the Ustream was canceled...
What was that video that I was just watching where Zwil was singing in the shower??? -
-
Uh oh... This thread is starting to lose enough valid content to explore and will veer into the argumentative stage if people aren't more careful...
So, to try and prevent that:
Quote:Seriously! I think we should have different forums for those who keep their posts-displayed-per-page so low, while those of us who do it right (100 per page baby!) can be free of the whole "WOW! 876 thousand pages already!!!" annoyance that comes up any time a thread has more than 7 replies!!I only show four. You low-posts-displayed-per-page-ist, you.
Quote:...
If you're going to be fair, which I like to be, there should be a White Male History Month to go along with all the other <special> History months out there.
What common country and culture did they all come from again?
Okay, this made me laugh!!
Re: talking in full sentences and being nice and not a jerk...
People used to just think that meant we were homosexual! "He's nice, intelligent, clean, knows how to cook... He must be gay!"
Now, online, it just means that we are women! Woohoo!
Now I need to find a way to explain all of the nasty, poor-speaking, foul-spirited and lazy women I've met in real life...

Quote:That is an excellent point and great examples. This thread has gotten into my brain and I wanted to put into words something else I'd like to see, or at least that I think would resonate.
I mentioned yesterday that we rarely see signature characters in their environment, or at least in an environment that illustrates their story. It's also rare to see a character doing anything other than standing there waiting to talk to us.
I had to dig through my memories to come up with one, and it's a fairly recent addition at that: Bobcat in her private room at Studio 55. Her costume is exceedingly plain, but that insolent pose tells a lot.
Another powerful image not in this game was always Professor X in his chair. He always stood out from other heroes, but still never appeared weak.
I think there are some great new idle poses, or even the old sitting poses, that when used well, could really bring some characters to life.
...
I noticed that Prometheus animates somewhat interestingly and I liked that.
I've often thought that most of the major NPCs could be doing something a little better to display their character through their animations.
Anyway... Don't want to derail things further, but that is a very interesting aspect of making signature characters resonate more!
(Also, very cool ideas on using the hide/reveal contacts technology along with this) -
Quote:This is a post of awesome, David!Animation is indeed an art issue, and the way characters move (or don't) interact with each other profoundly affects gameplay.
Just for fun, let me run some hypothetical update ideas past you and see what you think. As a thought experiment only, let's say we were going to update the primal Hamidon model. Again, absolutely no plans for this, but it's an interesting topic to think about. You've expressed a desire to maintain the character's "amoeba-ness," and I whole-heartedly agree with you. That said, there are ways we could potentially make him more visually interesting while staying completely faithful to the character concept.
Off the top of my head, some examples:
Quote:--ANIMATED CILIA. What if, for decoration, Hamidon grew the occasional wriggling tendril? Or had several spread across his surface, constantly wriggling? For me, that would make the monster feel more alive, more like a microscopic organism, and a heck of a lot creepier too. (You'll notice 4 wriggling cilia poking through the Seed of Hamidon's shell incidently).
Did I say "split"?
Quote:--CELL DIVISION. In keeping with the giant cell theme, what if the creature split into two smaller pieces at some point during the battle? For me, that would make the raid experience a lot more interesting-- maybe players would have to coordinate efforts between the two halves. Also, it would be great to see this guy move in a major way.
Now we get to the really great stuff...
Quote:--SCROLLING SUB-SURFACE TEXTURES. This is something Jay hooked up on the Fallen Seers recently, and it would give the impression that liquid is flowing across/through the cell wall.
Like swirling, squirming, squiggly-ness all along/within the texture of Hamidon's walls/skin? Awesome!
Quote:--DETAILED ORGANIC TEXTURES. I'm imagining semi-transparent capillary networks (perhaps with a slight glow, maybe even pulsing) across the creature's "skin." The more organic and alive it gets, the closer I think we'd be to the original idea for this character.
Regardless, some semi-transparent details and glowing could be fantastic!
Quote:--FLOATING DEBRIS/BODIES. Again, to enhance the sense of realism and dread, wouldn't it be neat to have defeated heroes and/or rubble floating in the cell fluid? Just the illusion of things floating within the creature would help to sell the notion that it's composed of liquid.
I'd worry a tiny bit that all of these additional details could muddy things up a bit, but, so long as you do it right and you think it looks right in action, I thin that'd be super.
All of this makes me wonder if they could add a group fly effect for any and all who enter into Hamidon... (I know people with powers that require the ground would hate me for that, but I still think it would be awesome).
Quote:--ADDITIONAL ORGANELLES. If I was in a giant single-celled organism, I'd expect to see more naturalistic and a greater variety of organelles within the creature. Maybe you can target it, maybe it's just decoration.
Also, what Lemur Lad suggested would be fantastic (non aggressive organelles that simply shove us around, like the damn pedestrians do when they walk into us... That is such a great idea, haha!).
Quote:--CYTOPLASM BURSTS. We could rig up an effect where the creature sprays fluid after you hit it. You'd have the feeling that you'd punctured the cell membrane and that you were actually damaging it. Anything to make the the fight more visceral would feel like a win for me.
Quote:So there you have it. From an art standpoint, we want to do everything in our power to bring these experiences to life in the most engaging, breathtaking, and super-heroic ways possible. Again, a Primal Hamidon update is NOT on the docket at the moment, but if it were, these are some of the things I'd be thinking about.
For me, changes like these would simply be polish on the core experience, deepening the encounter's sense of immersion and realism and keeping the art fresh and modern. This is a living game after all, and ideally we want the graphics to impress both new players that decide to try us out for the first time while simultaneously keeping things fresh for the veterans. I don't think any of the hypothetical updates listed above would harm the Hamidon experience. In fact, I think they could take what's already cool and make it way, way cooler. What do you think?
Great to hear you sharing thoughts about personal interests in potential updates to things.
So... This'll be coming in a few issues, right?
Tell NCSoft that I have approved it and not to worry about it, hehe.
Hehe, fun stuff!! -
I would make that as well, Dechs!
Undecided with whom... But only because there are a few good options for me, hehe.
I'm seeing it as a bit of a high profile, swanky sort of public affair?
(Maybe not quite so much "swanky", as business/promotional?)
Actually, I think I know who I'll bring. -
That is awesome!!!
Congrats on a great piece!!
I've always wanted to make figures of my characters... Ever since playing D&D many moons ago... Still haven't ever done it/had it done...

Quote:HeheCause I kind of suck at RP? I don't always think of the best thing to do IC at every given moment. When I left it was more of me just going 'F it, I'm out of here". Admittedly still kind of new to RP, and have lots of bad experiances with it in the past. At least I keep trying though.
This will probably not be anything you don't already know, but the big key for such a thing is to just let your character decide. What would your character do?
Forget your own mind and lose yourself in the character's mind and go along for the ride.
When things come along and throw you out of it, try to just shrug it off and ask yourself what your character would/should do within the situation and go with it. Maybe find some kind of key to focus in on your character for those moments when you lose it. Whether it is something in their backstory, a piece of artwork that reminds you of the character's persona, something, anything that might help you zero back in on them instead of you. Maybe even something form your own life that easily relates to the character. Some emotional/psychological similarity/connection. Sometimes that is what inspires us to create that character in the first place.
Being new is where we all start. The only thing any of us can really suck at (when it comes to role-playing) is allowing ourselves to let go.
I know it can be tough sometimes when you feel like styles are clashing (You've got The Tick in my Watchmen scene!!), but that's the nature of wide-open RP in an MMORPG.
It can work. We all just have to be flexible.
That goes for all sides, of course, but we can only control what we and our characters do.
Anyway... Best of luck and no worries! -
Hmm, at first, I honestly thought that I'd probably not be able to find my true answer to this question...
But, coming back here now, I think I may have.
I think I find my personal fun challenge when I have to use my powers wisely and in time or I will likely fall.
And I think this is why I enjoy playing my Elec*3 Blaster so much.
I have damage and a good amount of utility to help my cause and prevent me from falling... yet, no defense and few hitpoints.
I like jumping into the middle of things and putting the worst offenders into holds and sapping everyone's endurance and/or knocking them back/down and spreading the wealth of damage and keeping any and everyone else at bay until it is time to deal with them.
If I mess up, I'll likely drop (or have to flee).
Not everything always goes according to plan and sometimes the usual procedure doesn't work well enough to make things safe enough to hang in there... That's when more situational powers get called on... Maybe that third hold thrown onto the Boss (to hopefully lock him down since one of the first two missed), or an EM Pulse to buy some breathing space with my sliver of health and too many baddies ganging up on me... My Nuke recharging just in time for an emergency finishing off of pesky/evasive foes starting to gain momentum in a difficult battle... A surge of endurance just as my blue bar was about to expire against a nearly defeated Elite Boss... Some Break Frees and Respites just in time before a nasty foe was about to finish me off quickly...
All fun examples for me. When things go wrong... But I'm still up and battling!
I don't like forced (the computer cheats) situations that generally only have one solution (although, I don't detest them if they are handled rather well), but I do like situations where different powers used at the right times can be the difference between victory and failure.
I don't like to constantly be challenged while playing a game, as sometimes I just want to mindlessly beat up the enemies, but I do enjoy that level of challenge when I want it.
Hope that made sense! -
Quote:I'm sure I'm going to go look and think "How could I forget about them!?!?!"...
The Clockwork King!!!
Nothing says "persistence" as much as your brain in a jar. Nothing.
Once you learn of his true character... it just becomes all the better and more meaningful.
And I just love the brain and googly eyeballs floating around above this hulking robotic body. I love it! -
Quote:Very cool and, skimming over my own response and then reading this one of yours... It is clear that what I respond to most is the backstory and history implied and showing through their appearances.Thank you.
What I'd like to get out of this is a better idea of what the playerbase responds to when it comes to the big personalities in the COH universe. As we develop new characters, I'll keep all of your comments in mind.
That and some asymmetry, unique quirks, oddities, something different that stands out about them (don't shoot me, I-want-anything-the-NPCs-can-wear public!), whether it be traumatic results (replaced limbs, scars, ghostly characteristics, etc.), cultural/traditional garments or just bits and pieces that the character has picked up along their way towards becoming who they are today.
If that helps at all...
-
I'm sure I'm going to go look and think "How could I forget about them!?!?!", hehe, but...
Ghost Widow certainly leaps to mind.
I also feel as though Statesman is a great job at accomplishing a very traditional look, while also having the originality there. I especially like his cape, to be honest.
He clearly is the staple super hero guy, but he is just different enough.
Just my opinion on that.
Hmmm...
Quote:Just replying quickly to this to say that your mention of NPC groups and such seemed to invite this, as I was honestly thinking of the Bosses in the Circle Of Thorns as well.Positron's already addressed the issue, so in this thread please limit your comments to the topic at hand: Signature Characters.
The Madness Mages and all of those level Circle Of Thorns Bosses just pop tons of history into my brain upon a glimpse of their elaborately decorated robes and hats and thorny shoulders.
There is implied history and culture there.
Oh...
And, honestly... Noble Savage, of course! (Totally not a kiss-up)
The mix and match also greatly speaks of history and backstory and looks damn cool. And that's what it's all about, right, hehe? -
Quote:Also... If I was online (which, I wasn't) you'd better send me a message!Overall, I had a blast. Especially got a kick out of being called "Pharaoh."
I don't begrudge the "frat boys." They came to do what we all came to do: Socialize.
I do begrudge the people that couldn't just ignore it if they didn't like it. It seemed like once the frats came out, a bunch of people bailed. I tried to keep going, but the crowd had all but died, and Paladin formed up the Tin Mage. And my warshade can't turn down a good IC TF.
We need more RP gathering that is not of the typical ilk, followed by IC adventure. As we've always done!
I suppose i need to log on to do that though, eh? -
Quote:All common sense role-playing stuff and I agree 100%....
Not everyone RPs super-serious characters. And you know what? NOT ALL COMIC BOOK SUPERHEROES ARE SUPER-SERIOUS EITHER. I would frankly give up on roleplaying as the most boring pastime ever if Galactoman couldn't get drunk and and act a fool at parties... but I've NEVER encountered this kind of angry reaction before, to be honest.
For me there's a very solid distinction between "griefing" and roleplaying as a character who happens to be a jerk ... If you don't know how to respond to a particular type of character-behavior while you yourself are in-character, THEN YOU NEED TO THINK HARDER ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER. It speaks very badly of your skills has a writer and RPer if someone else's RP can cause your character to lock up like an aging computer, forcing you to resort to blocking and/or OOC name-calling. Heck, think of it as a writing exercise: "How WOULD so-and-so react to a drunken, arrogant superhero?"
If you're at a bar, having a pleasant conversation, and a drunken friend, acquaintance, or even stranger starts being crazy on the other side of the room, it doesn't ruin your night. Usually you just shake your head, laugh, and continue your conversation. In fact, this pretty much happens ALL THE TIME.
...
Neither you nor I were there for whatever people were complaining about, of course, but I'm not calling anyone out on anything that they haven't admitted to.
The "frat boy" thing or whatever, that makes no difference to me.
I will say one thing though, just because we can role-play any possible situations and characters doesn't mean we don't have the capability to pick and choose our stages OOCly.
I have characters of a ton of different personality and style types.
If I am knowingly showing up to join in on someone's attempt at gathering RPers of a certain ilk... I'm respectful enough to take that into consideration and approach things in kind. Again, that could include charging into a serious meeting of scholarly wizards with a drunken sailor, as it may open up wonderful RP opportunities.
I just don't want anyone confusing anything I'm saying as blacklisting any certain types of IC persona nor that unexpected encounters shouldn't happen within RP.
It's all fun when you ROLE with it (*adjust bow tie*).
Still, if you take a look at the origin of this event, it is not surprising that some regulars (according to what people are saying about their tenure here) may have veered things away from those initial intentions.
The reason for this gathering was because of some dissatisfaftion with the status quo.
It sounds, to me, that this event was a success, Nal.
And, I'd just say that the organizer should definitely take it upon themselves to communicate OOCly to people and try and to make things work.
One of the bad things about being the party-thrower is that your fun is often times sacrificed for everyone else's.
Instead of shrinking away and/or bailing, I would suggest trying to communicate to everyone to get along.
I only say this as a friendly bit of advice... not a YOUR DOING IT RONG sort of hindsight schooling!
Again, sounds like a success.
