Quote:Also this. Cap knows he has impressive healing factors, strength and stamina, but is wise enough not to submit to scrapperlock. Plus, it'd still bloody hurt.This.
Plus factor in that he's never used his shield to survive such a fall before and it's probably nothing you want to test unless you have to.
Quote:Hey folks,
I'm just curious in terms of "reality"...Also in real life, how hard would the impact have been? I forgot high school physics....
The bulked-up Cap weighs 240lbs (according to MUWiki),plus a 12lb shield and... call it around 25lb of utility belt and lightweight armour. That works out at 277lbs/125kg, and we'll round down the 120mph a little to 50m/s.
So for every kg of Cap's body and gear, that's roughly 1.5kJ of energy to dissipate: 187.5kJ overall over a very short deceleration period.
Considering that the average human legbone can only sustain a 200J impact before snapping (though it depends a lot on the mode and point of impact), even a supersoldier like Cap's gonna feel that one. -
Odd thought:
How much would Cap have earned in 1944/5 from public appearances and merch? Mostly he would have donated it, but if he stuck them into Liberty Bonds that are as yet unclaimed and have compound interest...
...could he buy a reasonable chunk of Stark Enterprises with that? Or at least a Cap-Cycle and some gadgets? -
Fun fact to chew on: IMAX ran out of screens/seatspace for Avengers, with one of my US Twitter correspondents travelling six hours to find the nearest midnight showing with seats remaining. The only other movie to come close to that is the Trek reboot.
However, the actual numbers are still pretty astounding (courtesy of Deadline.Com):
52% 3D (inc. IMAX and others)
40% traditional 2D
8% unreported/waiting for feedback
And of those:
8% IMAX
4% "premium large format" (eg: Cinemark XD, AMC's ETX)
So while the numbers will be padded a bit because of the premium formats,Harry Potter had nearly the same level of screen bookings on both regular and premium - and still didn't glue quite as many bums on seats as Avengers did.
Quote:What is the lesson that Hollywood is really going to learn? I hope it isn't 'moar 3D & moar IMAX!' (but expect it will be) instead of - more time with character and attention to script helps even an action movie.
We can but hope in the Word of the Whedon, and the deliverance of his Magnificent Purple Fluffy Jumperedness from the evil of executive laziness and awful scripting. Amen. -
Quote:Sadly, no.Isn't that where they also stored the copies of Shatner and Nimoy singing?

Back to the topic at hand: Avengers does prove one thing about Mr. Whedon and similar directors. Quite a lot of people thought that Sam Raimi - previously best known for Evil Dead and Darkman - couldn't handle a big-budget Spidey.
However, the experience of working on those movies proved invaluable in keeping things on a human scale and closely tied to the humanity of each character, rather than the pure Joel Silver/Michael Bay explodeyfest they could have been.
Consider this thing: all the while Loki and the [insert name of disposable villain group here] are tearing up NYC, there are crowds running hither and yon and much grand-scale screaming.
However, we follow one of them: an unnamed waitress (actually Ashley Johnson, who was previously blessed by his Great Fluffy Purple Prevaricatoryness in Dollhouse and will shortly pop up in Much Ado).
And while you might feel the herd mentality, witness the mass panic, they're really just visual statistics that we can observe dispassionately. We, as humans, connect with one other human's fear, panic, hope, despair, and final redemption by a bloke with a big shield. Even if we don't know their name.
This is the wisdom of the Whedon. Go in peace. -
Quote:STEP AWAY FROM MY FILLION AND TURN AROUND SLOWLY, PRAF...Sure, it pays Fillon's bills, but it's not going to be remembered in 10 years.
I contend that Castle was never meant to be the new Law And Order, but the new Moonlighting.
Point (a): it's memorable - I can still quote half of Atomic Shakespeare despite having last seen it when I was way small.
Point (b): didn't work out too badly for this guy.
...well,apart from that album, which I am in no way embarrassed about owning. And keeping in a locked vault made of vibranium under the polar icecaps, so that its evil can never be unleashed on the world again. -
Let's see:
- Superheroes: check.
- Evil villains and giant space monsters: check.
- Ska-punk: check.
- Blatant love for Sid & Marty Krofft: check.
- Guest shots from Al Yankovic, Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Samm Levine, Lou Diamond Phillips and other random people: check.
- Gratuitous explosions: check.
- Extreme silliness from the twisted minds behind Yo Gabba Gabba: so very check.
- THE BEST DAMN HERO VEHICLE EVER (with fins): check.
Yes, this is indeed relevant to my interests, and I demand it be brought to British screens.

Quote:There was one fan shoutout in the way Phil bought it (possibly), though I for one am surprised Thor wasn't nicknamed "Captain Hammer".May the next Avengers movie have cameos by the cast of Firefly/Serenity
As for sneaking in the rest of the Whedonverse, I would *love* an Avengers Auditions scene next film as SHIELD try and sign up as many heroes as possible. Like this scene with Felicia Day:
"So, your resume includes defeating Dr.Doom, MODOK, and Thanos? Impressive."
"Yes. Got signed references and a LinkedIn recc from Uatu himself to prove it."
"And what exactly is your power?"
*sudden chittering*
"...oh god."

One of my 2 Exalted Incarns is a SJ/Shield brute, who eschews the Zen of Scrapperlock for the awesome dark powers of SMASH. Damage bonus a-go-go and every Shield Charge like a nuke...

Incidentally, while you won't get any spoilers, you may want to follow @ZacharyQuinto on Twitter for marvellous shots of Q, Pine, Cumberbatch and "Grandma" Pegg just hanging out.

Incidentally, I thought the MIBs were supposed to be self-funding these days through licencing alien technology? Not that I believe a word of it. Isn't that right, Siri?
If you say so,Emily... EMAIL START: Z@mib.mil - subject remains unaware of observation -
I do play 'fenders - my very first toon, DreamWeaver her very self, was Emp/Psi and soloing was indeed pretty hellish. However, taking care of 8-man teams soon fixed the XP issues.
While I still love DW, I haven't played her in a while. However, Gamma Ranger (Rad/Rad/Power) gets brought out frequently. Not only is that combo readily soloable, but the ultimate mobile nerfing machine with a great balance of offensive and defensive options. The aura heal's a little irritating if you're trying to keep a disorganised team alive, but workable.
Other combos to try if you're new to 'fendery:
Dark/Dark
Heat/anything
Also: you need to read Dead Calm's Defender Manifesto. Still as true (and funny) today as it ever was... -
Quote:Not quite, but it's still nasty with current tech.Yeah but it'll probably cost a hundred trillion to exploit it's resources.
A typical Soyuz 3-man mission costs around $50m-80m, but doesn't lift enough to warrant the money for this gig.
Each shuttle flight cost around $500-700m and up. It was supposed to be cheaper than building a new rocket each time, but the sad fact - especially after the Columbia STS-107 explosion - was that a sizable chunk of that cash went on micro-checking, assessing and repairing the birds.
Virgin Galactic's take on the old "Orient Express" spaceplane plan could work out well for getting people to LEO,but high orbit and beyond's still a pain in the ***. The goal is to bring lift pricing down to $1000/kg or less, and that's going to involve some MAJOR tech. Not to mention more risk than flying a Capissen-38 with bad motivators. -
Because I'm playing two different Staff alts. :P Until another new set comoooohnewshinystufff *poing*

Weird one: I know masks are an integral part of being heroic-like, but I always felt like they detracted from the connection to the character. With one exception: a straight black mask with wingtips for ears.
..see what I mean? -
Just annoyed about something - I've had a few CPU overheat crashes of late and was wondering what's been nicking my system resources.
As it turns out, McAfee RealTime Scanning - since last update - has been constantly chewing between 50% and 98% of my machine's CPU (and has changed user profile to hide how much it's binge-eating).
Luckily only a couple of months to run on my sub... and saving up for new lappy anyway. So what should I get next? -
I'd heard of a Dual Pustules scrapper coming out. The burst attack's really something.
-
Oookay. NOW I get why they want to do this.
The target asteroid they want to tow back - which is only about 2km wide - is 3554 Amun. Which is made up of the usual silicates, interesting ores, and odd bits of space ice...
Oh yeah, and a few thousand tonnes of native platinum, plus a bunch of tellurides, sulfides and platiniridium alloy. Yummy.
I never trust stories posted to Mashable over numbers, but if it's even a tenth as rich as the estimates then there's about two trillion bucks' worth of rare metals in them thar 'roids.

Backpacks and the Officer and Gunslinger toolbelts. Ranger Emily (and laser variant, Star Ranger Emily) have needed those since the beginning. Still need quivers, scabbards, etc etc for my other toons, as well as holsters, webbing, knife belts, tactical corsetry etc.
...hmm. Hey, devs, if you want me to spend my points on something... KoA accessory kit thankyou please?
Regarding the Mecha pieces, Capt.Thunder (the PPD's bucket-shop answer to Iron Man) has needed popout Buzz Lightyear wings since the start... -

I tend to move a lot, though how depends on the toon:
- RANGED & STALKERS: duck in and out of cover and get optimum shots, or to control the number of mobs chasing me down.
- TANK/SCRAPPER/BRUTE: keeping up with the action and/or keeping them off my team involves chasing down escapees, taunts, and again working with cover or trapping in corners. Plus it's fun.
- OMGHEALZOR: chasing down people who move out of aura range/LOS is pretty essential. Gluing myself to the tank is what some people want, but not usually what the team needs, and is frequently deleterious to my health.
- MASTERMIND: essential to keep moving to keep your pets buffed, keep up with the damres buff, and keep them from tagging any mobs you don't want coming after you just yet.
- LOCKDOWN (Domi/Troller) Oddly, for the most fragile of the toons, this is where I have to move least and can just keep spamming Holds etc. It also helps to keep track of which areas are held up with what if you're relatively stationary. -
Actually, I'm now prepared to admit... 500 tons is NOT going to make a hole in anything except Jim Cameron's wallet.
Obviously, 500 tons is quite big compared to, say, me, and it would probably hurt if it fell on my toe. However, it wouldn't.
500 tons translates as roughly only a 9- or 10-m wide 'roid: and even if we accelerate it way beyond normal impact velocities using a massdriver to a respectable near-cometary speed (50km/sec), it's still way too small to do anything but burn up and make pretty sparks in the upper atmosphere and maybe drop the odd fist-sized chunk into someone's back yard. Fireballs this size happen quite frequently.
In order to flatten Los Angeles, I now require a 1.5km-wide asteroid in order to make a 21-mile wide final crater. Here, do the math - courtesy of Imperial College... http://impact.ese.ic.ac.uk/ImpactEffects/
...while I go off to Mad Moff Tarkin's Used Tractor Beam Emporium And Hot Tub Saleroom. -
No, I don't see what possible harm setting a 500-tonne asteroid on a collision course with Earth could be, particularly if Jim Cameron decides he wants it in his back yard in Los Angeles.
If it does arrive by 2025, I might buying property shortly beforehand, so I can sail the calm, clear, serene waters of Arizona Bay with my nephews. -
Sadly not in time for David Tennant's birthday...
