Seriously though, the number of servers is almost a non-issue. It's RIDICULOUSLY easy to virtualize that kind of stuff nowadays. And with even a semi-decent SAN back-end, you'd be hard pressed to ever tell the difference without diagnostic tools.

    Oh yeah. The other evening:

    Freedom TF channel: 8 people
    Protector TF channel: 64 people
You have to look at the number in the team search window to get a more accurate count. There may have been 64 people in the Protector TF channel, but since it's a global channel, they could be logged in on any server and show up there. I haven't seen more than 30 (unhidden) people on Protector proper for some time now, and it's continuously been among the servers with the lightest load.

    please read.

This just in: companies exist to make money. More at 11.
  3. "We are a bunch of really great and close community members. This is the goal we are setting out to accomplish" just doesn't have the same ring to it, though. It's all about marketing.
  4. Interestingly, the announcement of the game shutting down has actually reinvigorated my desire to play it. I also got my girlfriend back into it and managed to reform weekly runs with a small group of guys we used to play with a few years ago. It does kind of suck that everything will probably go away in December, but at least we're going to have a blast for the last few months regardless of what comes to pass.

    Beta notes?

The beta market doesn't seen to be loading for me. The loading graphics spins for a bit, then it just goes grey. Is the store down?

Yeah, much of the music for the game was generic royalty-free, open-license stuff. I think some of the music for City of Villains was specific to the game, but I'm not sure. I do know for sure that the music used in Cimerora and the ITF was specifically composed for the game, and it seems that continued with Going Rogue, which of course got a soundtrack release.

  7. The design evolution of my first and namesake hero, Dixileta.

The first one: I started playing the game on the Infinity server on October 1st, 2006. This is the first character I made. As you can see, she's always been pretty gaudy. She was, ironically enough, based on a Mega Man X-style villain character that I had created before I started playing CoH. She's still there, sitting at level 25, and will remain that way until the game goes dark.

The second one: Since things seemed to be pretty thin on Infinity population-wise at the time, I decided to move to Freedom and reroll. I eventually took her to level 50 on August 17th, 2007. She was my first max-level character. A bit later on, once server transfers went live, I decided to move her over to Virtue, where I finally made my permanent home.

The third: In 2010, I decided to freshen up her design a little bit. This was actually based on Reiq's design of the character. He made a few design tweaks that I liked, so I integrated them.

The fourth: This is from later in 2010, and is the only alternate outfit for Dixileta that I used on a regular basis. I actually made quite a few costumes for her, but I almost never used them until this one. It's not anything spectacular (just inverted colors, really,) but I think it really worked to change up her design without losing the look I associate with the character.
  8. Residentx10: Please don't spread misinformation. Drops do not work that way. You do not have to get the kill shot to get a drop, and proximity to your teammates has no effect on what kinds of drops you get. See this: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Recipe...nemy_Defeat.29 "If a team defeats an enemy that drops a recipe, it goes to a random team member."

Nyx: Sounds like a case of bad luck. I rarely see purples myself while everyone else around me gets them every run, and I play everything BUT support characters most of the time. It happens.
  9. It doesn't snow in Paragon thanks to Nemesis' weather control machine. Even our clear, sunny skies are a Nemesis plot!
  10. Dixileta is now on Formspring: http://formspring.me/Dixileta

Should be an interesting creative exercise.
  11. Loading into the updater with Steam doesn't work because the updater closes and loads a different program (CityofHeroes.exe), which Steam doesn't realize is still part of the game. In order to get the overlay in game, you need to bypass the updater by making your shortcut point directly to CityofHeroes.exe. Of course, the game is normally not allowed to be launched this way, so you need to add the "-project coh" (remove quotes) flag to the Target in the Properties of your shortcut in Steam. This does mean that you will get "wrong game version" errors if you go into the game after a patch and didn't run the updater first, but you will have the Steam overlay.
  12. I played with Smurphy through the Nemesis Task Force, and I'm not sure I could come up with anything that could top it.

I am thinking about giving it a shot, though. It would be a good excuse to finally finish an arc, at least.

What was listed practically is a new machine. Unless you get a smokin' deal, upgrading that way is generally less expensive than buying a new computer (plus I dislike buying prebuilt PCs anyway, but that's a personal thing).

    Zomg!

Servers are back. Dual Pistols is currently blacked out, but it's there.
  15. Most of my earlier characters got travel powers, because at the time there weren't many other options for travel. Lately though, I'm finding that I'd rather be taking more primary or secondary powers in my builds, and with all of the options available for traveling, I'm not very concerned with travel powers anymore. I may take them for thematic/character reasons, but if there isn't a travel power that fits the character, I'm perfectly content with Ninja Run/temp travel powers.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you're actually right!

These are very nice, Aisy. The marketing department will be glad you've done their work for them.

We're sitting in a meeting and our Development Director said "We've contracted some Type R programmers".

I had never heard this term before, so I jotted it down on my notepad, so I could inquire about it later.

Just then our Lead Engineer asks "What is Type R?"

Our Dev Director looked stumped. "What do you mean?"

"You said 'Type R Programmers'" said the Lead Engineer.

"No, I said 'High Powered'." said the Dev Director.

"No you didn't. You said 'Type R.' See I wrote it down." I said, and showed him my notepad that said "Type R?".

So now, everything high powered and awesome in the office is "Type R".

I am now on a crusade to get it used outside our offices. I should add it to urban dictionary or something.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sorry Posi, but Honda and Irem beat you to it. Honda does use it to denote their high-powered line though, so maybe your Director thought he was being clever.

Siphon more cash from the masses. How about some cool free stuff?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oh, you mean like that minor update they released this morning? I guess that wouldn't count though. I mean, it's just a potentially infinite source of new, creative playable content. Not very cool at all, really.
  19. You can. Just set /suppressclosefx 1 and then /suppressclosefxdist 99 and all power effects and auras on your character will be made invisible at all camera distances. Unfortunately you can't pick and choose what you want to be visible versus invisible, but it is still possible to shut off graphic effects.
  20. Got another one to throw into the collection. I really like this. Zairyo caught the personality of the character absolutely spot-on.
  21. So I'm a pretty avid fan of getting art of my characters, but I've pretty much kept it to myself, because I'm a jerk like that. But, I figured since I put all of my CoX commissions up on Photobucket, I'd take this opportunity to share them with the forum. I know a lot of DeviantART folk have probably seen most of these, but for those who haven't, check out the awesome work these artists have done. I have more coming soon, too!

While it's not much, this looks fairly interesting.
