The fact is, CoH's 2011 Q1 earnings marked an all time low. Now, that doesn't give us subscriber numbers, but it gives us an idea of the state of the game.
If those are the same numbers I found, then they represent sales of boxed copies, not total revenue including subscribers.

    FYI - Break

Wow, holy crap, and also major gratz.
  3. Happy Birthday, Canada, home of one my favorite bands.

That's my guess. The segment of the population that hates the iTrial grind and wants a solo option is ignoring 7 years of established content that tends towards giving quicker and/or greater rewards to teams and giving slower and/or lesser rewards to soloers. If reward merits are any indication of how the devs would plan on rewarding solo incarnate content, it's pretty much a sure thing that a purely solo path will take much longer than a purely iTrial path.

I'm not arguing against providing a solo path. I like the idea, as I live in sparsely populated timezone and I'd like to be able to earn progress towards Incarnate slots even when everyone else is asleep, but if past design decisions are any indication, the solo grind will be more arduous.
  6. Anti-Matter got stuck in the first Keyes' trial I did yesterday. Two(!) GMs showed up and after about 10 minutes he was unstuck. Either it was GM magic or he just got bored of swimming in concrete, either way we still managed to successfully complete the trial.

    UFO over the UK

Fake, especially the second linked video. They should've hired Freddie Wong.

    Free Going Rogue

This argument seems awfully familiar. Replace 'Going Rogue' with 'City of Villains' and it's like going back in time.

  13. I've never been one to cry 'DOOM!' and I don't think I'll start now. Keeping forum access behind a paywall is a smart move. I'll wait and see how this pans out. It's a move the MMO market in general has been shifting toward as attitudes about the F2P model change.

This does make CoH perhaps the oldest MMO making this transition though, which I guess is why they're placing such an emphasis on keeping VIPs around. Lots of people are very passionate about maintaining the good community this game has cultivated over 7 years. I have no doubt that Paragon Studios recognizes this and is gonna fight tooth and nail to keep that community as intact as possible.

As for facing an influx of free players, well, as others have noted, I don't see how it could be any worse than what we've seen already.

EDIT: Oh, and haha, just realized they announced I21 on the 21st of June, how very droll.

Declining population seems like a poor excuse for throwing balance out the window. It'd probably make things worse. Unbalanced abilities are anathema to playerbase retention.

Nope. Some powersets are good for teaming, others for soloing. This is by design. Buffers happen to be fantastic on teams, providing extensive force multiplication while in turn relying on the frontline damage dealers (or other buffers) for protection. Self-buffing screws with the team dynamic, giving buffers all of the offensive and defensive benefits of their own buffs without any drawbacks, which is not in any way balanced, and balance is the reason self-buffing won't happen.
  17. I knew how it would end, but all the same it was amazing to watch. Clash of Kings is gonna be even better.
  18. Ok, so 90% of the human race was wiped out not even a year ago, yet these people seem pretty ok about it. "Let's find a place to hunker down and everything will be fine" instead of "HOLY **** THERE ARE ALIENS AND THEY'VE KILLED EVERYONE AND THEY'RE ENSLAVING OUR KIDS WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO". They watched the world go to hell and they seem completely detached.

  21. Looks like I'm skipping this one. My expectations were pretty low to begin with, but a 24% on RottenTomatoes tells me my $7 is better spent elsewhere.
