Now I understand your complaints. As a person who mainly has spent his years of off and on play since 04, leading pug tfs, I am very aware of how many people dont run tfs very often, and have a fairly low opinion of them due to some very bad first experiances.
Saying that, I am not among those who have issue with the original TFs or Commander TFs due to the accolade.
I have run and loved posi, syn, sister, citadel,(ok I dislike manticore but mainly personal reasons towards the character, and being mainly pro crey) and numina are all tfs I have enjoyed running countless times. Each character I have ever made has ALWAYS run each of those at level for thier first times. Heck since year one is was pretty much sop run a syn at 15 and be 20 by the end if there wasnt a mentor for you, or if you where a empath who was typically allowed to be PLVd out of sheer kindness.
Even now last time i ran a synapse in a reasonable hour and 28 minutes with 2 friends and a pugger, one of the non 50s on the team gained 3 levels during the run. Seemed very reasonable reward for the time all things considering.
I know there is some contempt for speed runs. But its unfair because it is just another form of challenge, encouraged by the challenge system. I know few who have experianced a gold medal synapse, those who run with me for thier first time rarely get to experiance otherwise, and are frequently quite grateful. those who have run it before are likewise and say how fun and painless it was compared to thier typical experiance.
As for posi. I wont deny the new 2 part story arc is fun, my character of the same name as my forum handle revels in soloing doc vahz at the end of part two as the rest of the team fights to clear and disable the bombs. Whenever I meet a new player who hasnt run it yet who has an interest to I immediatly log on to dem and form one for them.
However I also frequently for pure enjoyment and personal time challenge run posi original via flashback still. personal best time is 58 minutes and I am sure i can still do better. If they do revamp other TFs as they did posi, which I am not against, they best still give a similar option to access the originals, and ideally in a way I can still run them first time for a new character AT LEVEL! still annoyed I always have to have an exemp build or running old posi now. by a lvl I inevitbly have started IOing out at least with procs and specials. Id prefer all those tfs give the OPTION at the contact so the leader can choose which.
Also TFs like the all clock and all freak and all council ones are definatly among my faves for certain concept characters just as easy access to content that fits them. My psions revel in synapse, My mere humans love to take on council, my electrokineticist simply cant get enough freak frying action in in a day.
So while I get while it can be dull, to be fair there are many who enjoy facing a constant enemy group rather then it changing up often with less ryhme or reason then some might think. I still wont waste time on any TF that poorly portrays crey as less then the awesome independant world dominating force they are.
In otherwords careful waht you ask for because if they where revamping manti id be on these forums demanding upgrades to the PPs that would return them to the days when one would have most players experiance a darkening of pants on par with that nightmare of a wonder woman movie linkara reviewed. -
Quote:PB KB is awesome, like all KB. the fact thier human form is the true superman build of this game is far to often ignored among the many wannabes in the tank/brute/ scrapper ATs.Peacebringers- To much kb for me
Dual Pistols- Not enough oomph. It lacks the damage compared ot the animation times
Psychic Blast- It felt amazing on most baddies but if you run into a PSi resistant baddie you are pretty much screwed.
Gravity (Pre Buff)- Obvious reasons
Spines- It take forever for you to get a decent chain going. No thanks.
Masterminds- I wanted to feel more like a Summoner but The only sets that give me that feel I think is Thugs, Demons, Illusion and Plant.
DP is true more flash then effect, so are alot of sets if people really knew the truth. one of the best blasters I know next to myself is a DP blaster. Its always more how you use what you have, then the base power of what you have.
My blaster with no equal is a psi/ment/force blaster. NOTHING is strong to psi is the real truth. When compared to the number of mobs that are strong against LoLethal dmg, NewbFire dmg, energy dmg, neg nrg dmg well it just is not as true as people think tha psi has mobs strong to it. Most so called strong psi res mobs only hit around 40%, compared to mobs that hit 80% when strong to any of the other much more common types.
Borrowing from the worst line in comic movie history. " What happens to a tin can hit by a psi tornado? The same thing that happens to everything else!" Cheesy as sin but no less true.
Best troller I known since year one is Grav. Again its not how powerful its baseline but the person behind the build that matters most.
Spine/Fire farm builds: Nuff said there I think.
MM: My only gripe with them has always been the lack of classic cox lore based vil groups. Banished Pantheon or Vahz over necromancer, Tsoo or Knives of artemis over ninja, crey or malta over soldiers. Etc etc etc.... That is the only reason I have never really enjoyed nor lvld up an MM very high. demon has been tempting since they retconned that into infernal and the like making it really the only MM set with a logical niche in the games lore. The rest are just too generic for me to care. -
Personal reasons usually in that I have a 50 or come close to capping and deleting for not being to my taste are the only reasons i tend not to use power sets in future builds.
Many of my most dusty toons tend to share a set with one of my 50s and hence make leveling them both easier due to familiarity with the set, but dull because I already know exactly what each power does, no new fresh fun feel effect to make it enjoyable to keep leveling.
I also have to LOL at some of the people in this threads comments on certain sets.
Psi blast is THE BEST set for blasters short of the new dark blast. All math aside, its mix of control effects when tactically applied, and built well is always a dominant force in any mission solo or group. My own psi/ment blaster is so beyond what most consider a blaster capable of largely because how I use his soft controls nearly as effectively as a dominator or controller will be in the hands of any but the most veteran players of those ATs.
Kinetics. Even with Time Manipulation, Kinetics is a set with no real equal. be it for a support build or an offender it is THE SET I look for most on would be allies when I form a TF. Give me a kin and a bubbler over ANYTHING else anyday. Oh and empaths are just a LOL like anything worth running cant heal itself damn fine anymore.
Outside of those things, no set is really useless. Some have sub optimal sets to combo with but even those in the hands of one with experiance can be made to wreak devistation among the most formidable foes. -
Ill be honest since COV first came out I was always annoyed by villain ATs because they had little to nothing to do with many of the old well known vil groups we had grown to have fondness for as we had beat them down over and over as heroes.
For example I wanted to love master minds, I tried every set. couldnt get into any of them because they are generic and none really fit with any vil group. Id of given anything for a Tsoo master mind who was like a sorcerer with tsoo type pets rather then a ninja. A banished pantheon type shaman with BP pets instead of necromancer, an eidelon with vahzilok instead of robots, etc.
As for others. I still want to play something like some of the tsoo have. martial arts and kinetics. Sounds like a scrapper version of a corruptor to me and I bet would be tons of fun to have a melee primary dps class, with self/team support 2ndaries.
Also as for someone talking about thier ideal sniper. I myself since COV launch felt blasters biggest need was instead of defiance or maybe added to, a stealth/ AS function in all thier 2ndaries and a new longer range snipe. maybe even granting blasters some form of superior visibility as well if possible. -
Easy Answer. Its all a nemesis plot and the civvies are actually nembots.
Oh and the rocks are a form of energy sapping meteor that effects ALL forms of power. Like Universal kryptonite. -
I still find this whole debate odd. If your concept makes fighting certain mobs seem beneath you and them having the ability to threaten you is ruining your groove, then avoid that content. Simple.
If your concept is one that being less then full power is an issue, then lvl your character using a generic name, and then do a name change once you got all his incarnate stuff done. There is nothing in the way of a mystery here as to how to make the game fit your needs.
My points earlier about things like AE are all part of the same thing. Even RPers tend to stick to thier SGs because surprise surprise many rpers who dont know you wont give 2 inf about your concept or plot 90% of the time.
Personally I love reading bios and sending a hey nice concept there comment. I also can be quick to say hey not to shabby but you know if your goal was to be in sync with the game world you may want to change certain things. Not like I started knowing everything about the game, my first characters where very D&D related. mostly dark elves. However it didnt take me long to get a handle on the lore as I was reading every clue and contacts info as I ran through the game on my first long ago deleted dark elven blaster. By the 30s I had a good grasp on alot of interesting in game plots I could draw from to develop a character that felt like a PART of the world I was playing in.
It might be my character but its thier campaign setting still. If I was at the table top and the DM said we're playing in a dark sun campaign this time Id not go hey can I be a red robe kender mage from pre cataclysm krynn. At least if I did and the DM said no Id get why. But a good DM might go hey in this world of athas we are playing on, once upon a time in its own pre cataclysm days there where halflings who are very advanced in magics not seen today. Maybe we could find a way to let you be one of them if you can avoid abusing any possible OP advantages we find it gives.
I do something like that in COX alot. especially with demon type characters. so many use generic or christian based concepts for thier demons and it really just never jells with the image and idea I get from COX for demonkind. Heck I see demons as being actually unfairly viewed as evil, IMO they just make deals, and do not take the breaking of such pacts lightly. They came to humanities aid to defeat the zealot followers of a gawd who sought to enslave all of earth. When those who made the pact that brought them betrayed it, they took the balance of that price from those who had called for the alliance in the first place.
The vast majority of cox lore is like that to me, easily seen from a number of views. I have a heroic wizard who often praises tielekku because its hard for him to see the circle of thorns and demons as anything but evil. Depending on the character I play I argue either view quite passionatly in game rpwise.
If you try to force the game to be YOUR game it will likely break before it gives you what your after. Should you try to compromise and become a part of the world you will find it bending its knee to you before you even think to ask.
How tickled do you think I was for example when I was playing my character demetrios Vasilikos, a next gen paragon protector with a memory core made from a doc vahz dna sample, when he was running through the FIrst Ward content the first time and ofcourse had read 0 spoilers. I knew the ghoul king was the praetorian version of doc vahz ofcourse. But demetry and demetry fighting side by side, seeing how his fate played out. it was like having a bit of brand new content made just for me. That is the pay off from Lore Based RP concepts and i wish some of my fellow RPers here complaining about the game breaking thier immersion would try to learn to adapt to and simply ignore those parts that dont feel right for a given concept best they can.
FYI I am not saying how the incarnate system is perfect as is. I do believe a better soloable option for it should exist, but for now if u just use WSTs and conver shards to threads, slow and steady will get you up in tiers just fine. -
Welcome to CoX!. I know its not always fun to hear but I am going to start with a you may want to consider a new server now before you get in deep.
I am not trying to diss union in any way. each server is well populated, some lighter then others admittedly, but the main reason is you mention an interest in RP.
Well RP has its haters, this is no secret, so for pretty much the life span of COX we have mainly gathered on Virtue as the unofficial RP server. We have plenty of room for non RPers to but those who play on virtue are expected to respect others RP even if its odd random in character babble in a pug tf or even momma ship raid or ITrial. In my travels through other servers lets just say such casual immersion can be met with a blank face or even outright hostility. And that isnt thier fault really. We RPers got virtue and should be glad we have such a strong community there.
If you do come to virtue there are many light to heavy ranged SGs in many themes. Also its a place where making your own small lore based SGs is greatly respected and though it can take years for a single casual player to build a good sized base. with a few friends and all your characters in it, it can go much faster and you can expect a good sized base within your first 6 months of regular play. faster if you figure it out faster
I rep Crey Global Enterprises, and Midnighters's Club blue side for lore based rp sgs, and Circle of Thorns red side. I founded them all to with the following characters.
Count Alphonse Crey, Bentley Berkeley, and T'Keron Valmaz. not all on the same accounts. My sg are not large in fact these days most are pretty much long time in between casuals and I man a mainly ghost sg but i dont mind our rp allows for easy casual with random folks and the concept has rather well mirrored the way the world has changed through issues.
Also Id actually suggest you start with a praetorian, for 1-20 content that still really is the best of thier newest breed. Allows for a easy rp progression into a red or blue or better yet a rogue or vig so u can experiance alot more content your first time through. I love running with new players through story arcs myself exemeped down frequently, and Also no few good AE arcs exist that are story based.
A short 1 mish story driven one I made long ago is numbered 46665, has a half hour clock on it and is suitable for any either side concepts to run. read the clues as you find them and dont think fighting is always the best option.
oh and before I forget paragonwiki, not for spoilers for missions, always best to go in blidn the first time imo, but to research content. for example if you want to play a demon lots of cox specifics for those and alot more interesting to rp with then some generic angel/devil from real world theology.
Or say you like the dark powers. Lots of lore both magic and science on how you could be aquiring those, red and blue characters who could of been mentors or the like. Seeing those kinds of well thought out concepts using lore can really make for a smooth bit of random RP with total strangers.
Obvious example: Hey that is nice power armor you got there my new friend."
Oh thanks, I was a fire man who was badly burned saving some children from a burning building, positron was so kind as to help repair my body with the gift of this life support armor."
Good ol posi. That guy made this arm for me after I got it bitten off by a giant eyeball during this crazy extra dimensional invasion a few years back."
You dont say a giant eyeball? I saw a guy with some of those chasing after him the other day in talos."
Bad day to be that guy then those things can bite through impervium"
the above is a very basic example of how two strangers familiar with even abit of cox lore about a few icon characters and events we had in the past, can use it to fuel a light RP session out of the blue without a great risk of it devolving into personal RP drama the other has no real interest in, or random im so great blah blah blah talk which are both sadly about the most common forms of random rp you will find still.
Look for tags in Bios like Lore RP, MRP, and Story RP. ERP is well blatantly saying your after some cyber action, ARP is that to a lesser extent, and then the RP with a blank is like saying I dont have a real idea nd like to use a new story with every random stranger. -
I being a big lore based RPer on virtue with most characters vig,or rogue for concept purposes but also someone who understands limited play time due to rl constraints and disposable income can recognize both sides of this debate fairly clearly.
On the one hand non rp vets who are sick of taking time to do the change wanted a fast option, given one that requires RL cash, it offends for a variety of reasons. Mostly as a cash grab, and want equally fast in game play options. Which ofcourse would undermine the whole reason to have to pay for an insta change in the first place.
On the other is the RPers who see it as well a cash grab, but are offended because they feel it by allowing that fast out of game play option to swap, destroys and even belittles thier own system. effectively putting profit before game play quality for players.
My Suggestion:
To keep the current in game system, force those who want it quick and easy to pay for it, and to be sure to use some of that funding to expand our beloved alignment story content for RPers. More arcs for each level range, maybe one for each origin. Dont know about you but Id like to see our origins mean something again and I think alignment arcs are a great place to start. -
My kryptonian build actually is a Human form PB using only melee attacks with the exception of eye beams. The right pools, sets, and a full team of cosmic balance buffs, and you can feel very superman like. And thier one biggest gap once upon a time in human form of lacing solid mez pro is easily removed with clarion incarnate now.
Though maybe an SS/Regen brute with the right pools and incarnate is more superman when you think about just how undying he really is meant to be. -
Quote:You know I really should invest in some NC soft stock one of these days. With all your fact fu got any tips on a good site to buy thier stock through? You know what's awesome? Facts are awesome. Let's have some facts.
First off, here is the (mostly) current Juggernaut's Club of MMORPGs, the ridiculously big dogs.
Note: All of these are absurd. WoW in particular has close to four times the subscriptions of any of its closest competitors. Aion is the new big huge thing. Runescape is massive. These games are all big deals to the entire industry, and in the case of WoW, to the entire world.
Here is the Big Boy's Club.
If you look at them, you will notice they fall into three categories.
1) Strong, healthy games that will not die for the foreseeable future. These include local heavyweights like LotRO and EVE, ancient and unkillable creatures like the EverQuests, and more recent products that are still currently healthy but may not stand the test of time, like Age of Conan.
2) Dying games. These ones all have one thing in common: Their peak was way higher than their current numbers and their descent has not been arrested. Warhammer Online started high but plummeted rapidly afterwards, and is now in its death throes. Whatever malady first afflicted Star Wars Galaxies in 2005 has finally killed it. Dark Ages of Camelot is suffering a similar slow demise.
3) Also, there's Rift. It's new.
The hallmark of games from the first category is that they have fairly stable server populations regardless of how big those populations are. Maintaining servers is actually super cheap (so much so that ArenaNet has made great profits off of Guild Wars using no subscription fees ever, which is why they aren't recorded on the charts), which means once the game has already been developed, there is no reason not to maintain the servers unless the subscription count drops to practically zero.
City of Heroes has that stable population of ~125,000 according to all available data. Now even if CoX profits are decreasing, so long as they level out at some point above about 25,000, Paragon will be fine. Overall, however, Paragon isn't acting like a studio facing decreasing profits. They're still churning out new content, they didn't jump on the F2P bandwagon until after bigger games with enough population padding to take risks had proved it was workable (most specifically, LotRO), and they're not making any sort of desperate money grabs like you usually see with companies about to go under. CoX remains the undisputed king of the super hero genre within the MMO industry (though dark horse challenger DCUO might unseat it eventually, and that actually could put CoX in hot water).
For the curious, there's also the charts for the Wannabes, most of which are already dead or half there, and the Never Stood A Chance category. Although Puzzle Pirates is on that last one and is actually doing fine, but you'll notice the data is five years out of date and that game's got graphics roughly on par with a flash game anyways.
Also, NCSoft is publicly traded which means we can actually download their earnings reports from their website. If you bother to download it, you'll note that CoX is pulling in about double the amount of money as Guild Wars in the past few quarters.* You may recall that Guild Wars is the game that's getting a sequel with awesome new bells and whistles which is hoping to unseat the other non-WoW industry leaders with its incredible new gaming paradigm. The one that's going toe-to-toe with Aion and The Old Republic. And Paragon is making twice the profits of those guys. This data came from November.
I think CoX is going to be fine.
*And also that holy crap NCSoft owns every platinum MMO except WoW, what shady MMO crime lord are they paying to get that kind of market dominance? -
Quote:Sorry but your forum handle sums you up nicely. YOu lack FAITH in everything it seems to me. COX has mine more so then any other MMO out there, and the company has imo never done me wrong. cryptic may have failed us but we carry on. NC soft has my props. I love GW another old mmo going strong, with company support planned even after they launch gw2 which they are in no way rushing becuase of thier stable fan base which gives them confidence in consumers wanting thier product.City of Heroes/Villains is advertised as a MMO - massively multiplayer online game, not a MSO - massively someplayer online game. If I was a new player logging onto CoV for the very first time today and only seeing 2 or 3 players in Mercy Island I would say, " I'm not going to play this game it's dead, I'm not going to waste my time checking out other servers because they are probably a inactive to." We have to think about the future of CoX, there are people that play just or the game, but there are a lot more that play for the social aspect of the game. Everyone that has responded is one including me, we call our servers home and take great offense when someone talks bad about our server. Every month a MMO game gets shuts down, when CoH/CoV starts losing money they will do the same, then we all will be screwed CoXless. In April CoH will be 8 years old and for the first time it is free to play. Why would a MMO with years of charging a monthly fee add a free to play? Because the Devs know the end is coming and they are trying make a buck to save the game. In my opinion shutting down 3 servers will save CoX. Unfortunately most of the vets are against changes, changes that I feel will save CoX. Whether I have to pay for it or it's free I am moving off of Pinnacle, my home from day one, for my own personal game enjoyment. Me and my son share my account, he was sitting beside me when I logged back on after a year and did the player search and saw 23 players on-line. I turned to my son and said "Where in the hell did everyone go?", he shrugged his shoulders. I gave my son his own server on Freedom to play on. I think they need to shut down 3 servers to save CoX, the end is near but most players are to narrow minded to see that.
COX going hybrid model imo wasnt an act of desperation but a true gift to all mmo players out there who hadnt yet tried cox, as well as to those who love it but due to the hard times of our worlds economy could no longer affored to sub. I know many old friends who came back as thier accounts have enough vet badges to make ftp life pretty fun still.
Unlike say DDO, or CO, or DCUO, etc etc which all went hybrid out of pure desperation. Hell I actually started to think jack still has his babies back and sabatoged co from the inside because no way the man who made cox could screw up that bad on accident.
I dont know the current word, but back in the day the rumor was each dot on a server represented 1-10,000 players. light load meant 10k or under, med meant upwards of 20, and red dot/locked out meant it hit the 30k cap.
That always felt about right with cox subs usually spoken of being in the 100-200k range. the main 2 which includes my home(virtue forever) on active times do feel like there are 30k people spread out through the world making it feel very alive and active.
Interestingly enough though for the longest time I kept all my red siders on guardian. I still check in there time to time, and still feel its red side is surprisingly active compared to many, especially considering its a typical light load server.
OP if you want alot of red siders your likely to never find it to be honest. red side is dead side, common phrase even on virtue. and my oldest toon I converted to rogue status as he is def an original villain before we had them concept character.
however I can also assure you others are right, server mergers are always more bad then any good they could bring. AOC lost any chance of me even being a casual ftp who might drop a 10 spot now and then because of server mergers killing off my launch server.
DDO lost any real chance at me ever treating them as more then a time killer because of closing down fernia server.
Servers closing equals kill the sg, they do not transfer these things between servers ever. SG bases would be lost, some people have spent YEARS developing these personal lairs for themselves and many other fellow players.
Your a recent returnee then spend some time finding friends, become a rogue so you can play both sides. RED SIDE IS DEAD SIDE DEAL WITH IT! Most players like being anti heroes or dark heroes rather then evil monsters in a comic book world.
The populations on any server are not so low that I have any doubt I could drop my main 50 in any one, and build a tf of my random choosing within a timely manner. that to me is great mmo population.
And also remember one of COXs great strengths is its SOLO friendly nature. MANY of us enjoy spending as much if not most of our time doing our own batman/super man thing rather then trying to be part of the avengers. -
I think it stems from several factors as to why so many seem to hate content some just roll through and move past like any other part of the game.
For one COX is very solo friendly. This is one of its greatest strengths to be honest imo. However when players long used to, maybe even spoiled by the ease such content has in that it lacks a need for real strategy and creates real challenge.
Now While I hate how they end with fighting characters that shouldnt be any tougher AVs then when we used to solo them in certain story arcs instead of some fun battle of epic proportians pitting us against like upwards of a dozen AVs at once that you needed to seperate to avoid them buffing each other etc, you know like 8 on 8 would to me be more heroic feeling.
I love how effective the incarnate powers are at doing what IMO they are meant to do. Let me feel more powerful then I was, without breaking the old content entirely.
For years some of my favorite TFs are in the shadow shard. except doc Qs I run the rest fairly often, especially those with a lvl 50 cap. These TFs have long been feared by many because of the heavy def debuff, psi dmg, and CC heavy power of the ruls which tear into some of the most hardy of tanks and scrappers.
Even now many newer players, or poor man builds, struggle to survive there, and when i run TFs I can often see long before looking at thier build info, the issues hindering them. Some seek to learn how to become stronger, some say its thier concept and it wont be changed for any reason.
As a Lore Based RPer I understand concept desire, but refuse to let it force me into making an inferior character anymore then I let the so called optimal power comboes be my reason for picking sets. For example I have a many years old and frequently shelved dark sr and dark regen. both are fun concepts and do fit the power sets i chose, but the sets despite being among the most godly combos just feel dull.
My Psi/Ment blaster who most say is the most gimped of blaster sets for dps is imo the best character I have, and he outperforms id guess humbly 90% of ALL other players I run with if not more.
Nor do I see an issue with I trials themselves making us have to use our new powers wisely. However I do understand the feeling of frustration that can occur when a large group based activity is easily ruined by one person, be it through ignorance, accident, or intent.
This is why imo I trials need a different system to punish. Like a lengthy lockdown in a cell. for example using extreme powers like flashy aoes gets you targeted by a insta kill sat laser. you end up in a cell that is nigh impossible to escape from. requiring several allies. Now the main team has to lose members to save the lost one or move on without him. This would be a good way to have those griefing get shut down, while those who screw up by accident or first time can be shown mercy and those helping can feel more heroic.
Personally I dont tie the RP of being incarnated up with the trials at all, they are just big war stories that after one time have been done as far as the story goes. I actually prefer for RP reasons to just grab WST notices and convert them slow and steady style. might take a while but my characters get where they need and do so doing alot of the content ive always enjoyed. -
I always wanted to see PVP become something good. However I am not sure it is a justified expense of DEV time anymore.
Flawed thinking imo on the parts of players is what lead to the situation we have now. Issues like tanks wanting to be able to tank large groups of players for example was an oxy moron or hulk like proportions.
When 2 players fight it needs to feel like its two super beings doing battle. This is hard to recreate as we have seen.
I can recall perhaps 3 good pvp experiances imo in COX since vil side was launched so long ago.
My first was right after cov came out. I was running an Energy melee/energy aura brute. I was beset upon by a group of 4 heroes.
a tank, blaster, defender, and scrapper. It was a fierce battle and it proved how well made vil ATs had been made for solo/pvp play for I beat down all 4 of them, several multiple times, as they fought to bring me down.
I was lvl 28 and it was in bloody bay.
Although I frequently went to BB for fresh shivans and a break up from the mish grind I would not again face much pvp for some time.
Then one day I was grabbing a fresh shiv with my psi/ment blaster who remains my best 50 perhaps to date and a blaster with no equals among his AT.
I found myself being fired upon by a ruptor as I went in for a met frag. I turned upon him and quickly began to turn the tides and he started to flee. Feeling my blood heating up for a battle I persued. As I overtook him I suddenly found myself facing a pack of foes, as he had friends waiting stealthed, including an MM.
Things looked dire as a hold landed, however I always pack with forsight and popped a breakfree, it phase and jump pack and evacced high into the sky.
They where utterly surprised by my escape and I actually recieved several complimentary tells from those villains impressed by my quick counter to thier planned ambush.
My 3rd was when I was on my claw/wp scrapper one day. Sitting afk in Ozone I came back to my keys and saw a sparking little girl next to me. I said hey sparky see anything you like? My character was invised and I was just making a punny to be friendly.
For some reasn being called sparky really fired up this little elec troller. She challenged me to a duel right on the spot, my first ever in cox at the time lol.
I accepted, and funny enough first thing she said as it began was " Wtf I thought you where a blaster. I was like um not last I checked unless claws are suddenly a blaster primary.
She sucker punched me as I said that, doing her damndest to sap me down, and nearly did before I tore her throat out. round 2 I wasnt fully recovered when she came back using all her sap mojo to bring down my toggles and land a cc. she managed to drop me that time.
learned my lesson though and as I got back up the gloves came off. I went at her like a torpedo and took her apart doing wolverine and all other claw men proud.
She demanded I face her pvp specced brute next to which I simply laughed and logged off for the moment as I had been planning to when Id first come back to the keys before our exchange.
Seeing as other games like AOC in thier first months offered me many awesome and intense moments of pvp before that games devs too gave up on appeasing the fickle players, I cant see COX ever getting to that point when my quality experiances here in pvp over all these years are so few and far between. -
I personally love the rogue/vigilante option and choose it for most of my concept characters.
Also a number of red side SFs are really quite well done and its a shame they are so rarely run even on virtue. I have been trying to lead more on my main red sider T'Keron Valmaz who is a rogue for RP purposes as well as the fun of having access to the full game world.
That last is the real reason I favor it. Between both sides and praetoria we actually have a really large well developed world to explore and enjoy. I also spend a fair bit of time hanging out at the D and its nice to be able to freely travel to either side with new friends I make for RP reasons.
Granted I do feel the loss of hero/vil merits is a pretty major drawback. When you consider thier real value these days, the dummied down merit rewards from the comic series seem especially harsh.
1 hero merit is easily worth the 50 reward merits you pay to convert. Yet you get no where near that many merits as a rogue/vigilante when completing alignment cycles, nor at the end of the previously mentioned comic series.
I really dont understand the reasoning behind that design aspect, considering you cant access other side story arcs or the like via flashback as some way to gain additional merits in way that increases play of content often unused these days.
Frankly I often feel I deserve MORE for my efforts when I come over from blue side to form a tf to help red siders get abit more action going on. Or spend time over there answering questions of new players who had know way to know that red side is practically a ghost town compared to blue or even praetoria. least on virtue.
So please DEVs I personally love having the freedom to walk the full world, but dont see this as in itself enough to justify rewarding those who prefer a smaller game with more rapid gains in power.
Perhaps something like if you run a tf on the other side you get an additional reward merit bonus, no more then once a week, similar to running a wst. I feel that would help even out the reward imbalance I personally see existing between those who can and cant earn the highly valued H/V merits -
Quote:sorry way to lack imagination. AE lets us make the world we want. canon is easy to interpret in a number of ways. For me for example its clear that our earth is ruled by corrupt evil meta and the real heroes are groups like crey, sky raiders, and even the old school cirlce of thorns and thier demon allies who fought to free humanity from the tyranny of gods. All gods are imo in cox lore EVIL, the only remotely good one was ermeeth who as far as I can tell lost his status giving knowledge to humanity and encouraging them to not worship other beings needlesssly. But since AE stories don't interact with the standard content, there is no way for them to be part of the canon. A carefully crafted story could easily be contradicted by the content in the next major studio update. At best, custom story arcs fit "between the cracks" of the larger canon, but never have any impact on it, or take place in "another dimension entirely", making them feel rather irrelevant, at least to me.
And many good arcs exist that are able to help fill the gaps as it where. For example in your story about players RPing about the battalion. Nothing is stopping them from running an arc custom made where they go through a portal to investigate a rikti lab, find some data on the battalion, maybe encounter some battalion enemies. Sure for now they could be just whatever, but certianly an easy update to moidfy to fit any future release once we know what battalion really are.
to discount AE to me smells far to much of the anti AE attitude Ive seen hurt COX since AE release. sure it is used to farm, so is alot of main content at one time or another. but the fact is we are really the only MMO that has infinite content. if anything it would be great to see a more collaberative effort of virtue lore rpers try and create more AE arcs working with game lore, and try to get enough positive ratings to encourage the devs use them as official canon and a way to take the game in a new direction evolved by the people living in its virtual world. -
I think as always those RPers lacking enough imagination are QQing for naught.
You dont have to run incarnate trials to gain mats. I have several characters who over the last few months have enjoyed the slow steady WST route to aquire notices to convert into threads and then into any mats I may need.
Ive only infact run incarnate trials with 2 characters, niether of which went into them until afte thier lvls shifts where +3 for it. I wasnt going in a burden to the team.
On the subject of Inc Powers and status. I dont have my mortal men learning them beyond a few minor perks. Or using pyro judgment as a super bomb from my batman time for those super powered big guy situations.
However among my Lore based RP characters( virtue forever) my oldest is the last of my first year characters and original main. His name is T'Keron Valmaz and he is the lord of demonkind fused in an unholy union through cosmic mishap with a mortal man of extra ordinary magical ability.
As a katana Super Reflex his power combo is not optimal, but that didnt keep me from enjoying him and pushing to 50 during the era when that was quite an achievment in itself for many builds.
I also recall that brief joy that was Perma ELude shortly after I made 39, and how it let me withstand the power of the crystal titan in eden even as my allies fell when our luck and ambrosia where stretched thin after a party wipe in our first rush.
Then came ED and then even after the rise of IOs it was hard to make his build feel as potent as say a dark SR or dark regen or kat regen. I spent alot of time tweaking and reworking his build over the years, trying to keep true to concept while finding a real measure of stand alone baddassery that would make all that time worthwhile.
Incarnate powers came and gave me the final peice of the puzzle I needed. As a weapon primary using powers like the heal pool for heal self was counter productive to fill the lack of self healing SR had. Body mastery gave me my energy recovery, but it was the power of rebirth that finally gave my character a well rounded defense set up on par with many more modern sets like WP.
On top of that Spiritual ALpha to add further to his extreme global recharge theme, his Elude is nearly Perma again.( well under 40 seconds, i can live with that down time)
When he stepped into Incarnate trials I found myself quickly eager to test him, to rise above the others. In lam I found that opportunity when I found I could often clear all the turrets while the team cleared the street and courtyard.
Hearing people ask " what happened to the turrets?" was always satisfying.
TO be blunt I find alot of people currently persuing incarnate power, or already wielding it, often are not the most effective players of thier characters, and seem to be heavily dependant on having all the incarnate powers to max tier to feel even alittle viable.
Personally if your looking for solid content to feel your new powers while still testing you by an older standard look to the shadow shard.
I find TFs run there even at level, can stress test many players to the point of rethinking thier builds even with incarnate powers buffing them up. Ruls and Storm els are not push over mobs and if your build can tear into them your definatly pushing cosmic class power. If they shred into you, no shame in that. better then you have fallen to them by the hundreds when they first came through years ago. -
Quote:To be fair your very wrong. COX has AE and that lets you always go do your own custom story arcs. I know many on virtue who only do AE custom arcs made by thier own SG members or those who are part of a RP association.Gods Don't Form Leagues
Let's face it, most gods don't need to be on teams with 23 other gods to feel, well, "godlike". Gods are usually solo badasses, and as Incarnates we feel this way when playing the normal content, but not so much in the iTrials, which exist solely to give Incarnates an appropriate sandbox in which to "play god." Oh the irony.
As others have said, it will be interesting to see if the new DA content will restore the sense of our characters being the stars of their own comic books, rather than being just indistinct soldiers in a platoon heading out to fight the war against Praetoria.
In Praise of Roleplaying
On a side note, I want to mention an interesting RP scene I saw being played out on Virtue a couple of weeks back. I was in the RWZ and a handful of characters, of all levels, were sitting in that "briefing room" and talking about the Battalion and all sorts of connected game lore. In fine RP fashion they made it feel real and immediate, like they were preparing for an important strike somewhere. They may have been doing this just to kill time, or to add their own context to an upcoming door mission, or who knows what, but it was really fun to sit and watch from the sidelines. I mean, it felt more real than anything going on in the iTrails.
The sad part about all this is that the game doesn't provide any means for players to go out and address the storyline in their own way. A team can't go out to another dimension and try to learn more about The Battalion. They can't go and cut the head off Arachnos as a pre-war precaution by leading a massive strike against the Rogue Isles. Or whatever. Instead we are left with only doing the missions pre-written for us and merely pretending to deal with the thousand other important things conntected in some way to The Coming Storm.
MMOs may be pretty fun today, but we've only barely scratched the surface of what could be done with this game format if truly creative minds got to work on exploiting the notion of "virtual world" for all it's worth.
Sure incarnate mats have to be gained from certain content, but that doesnt mean you have to say that is how you got your powers, after all the mere repeat raid factor makes that illogical for canon purposes. -
Part 3 hm? not sure how you can be kept from finishing that one by a griefer. They cant stop you from wiping out all the general groups, they cant stop you from killing the bot box. they cant keep you from killing the AVs.
Just odd to me. Where they like leader and jack up the dif suddenly? where they the only 50 and intenionally drop so you suddenly had only lowbies stuck with a 50 lvl mish? -
First blasters dont die all the time, if the ones you know do, they are not good blasters.
Achery is among the LOLethal sets, so keep that in mind.
Now days some of the newer sets add alot to possible surival options.
Dark does to hit debuffs, sonic and rad both make them easier to beat down. Some secondaries like dark and mental offer alot of useful utility. Drain Psyche plus a heavy global recharge build can be fantastic at keeping you up.
I tend to stick with force mastery myself, lots of suvival boosting there.
Get phase shift by 20, its the new must have by 20 power IMO for blasters. takinga few seconds breather to let others take off the aggro when you get in to deep is better then letting them do it after your dead.
If you really want a character with ice and achery for concept reasons id probably suggest another AT with access to some form of archery and ice powers.
Bentley Berkeley: 50 Psi/Ment/Force blaster of virtue. Blasters can take point and point blank like a real tank. -
Quote:Well for starters the war with the rikti is kinda is fault. sure they retconned it into a nemmy plot, but facts are facts. Way it was originally outlined in lore, statesman tracked nemmy to a meeting with rikti who where conducting peaceful trade. Is there a particular reason why? I can't think of any dialog in the game that is written like that.
Statesman being statesman persued them through into thier own world. The rikti long ago outlawed magic, and eradticated meta potential from thier kind, Once human as our own worlds people, thier current form was a product of science use to make them powerful enough to rival beings just like statesman and drive them from the rikti homeworld.
Naturally statesmans attack on them left them feeling threatened by our world, and I always felt the rikti actually saw thier attack on our world as an attempt to liberate humanity from thier meta tyrant over lord.
That was my impression from all available lore in year one. most current lore actually oddly reflects many rp conspiracy arcs ive played with my sg and friends in game on virtue for years.
Even the current revelation that he is in fact a puppet of the well rather closely mirrors my own long time ranting that he was just an avatar for the entity called zeus and using the guise of statesman to get people to worship him again.
There are even some who have gone a interesting route Ive RPed with, who say that praetoria is more like our world but abit fast forwarded. And that the only real difference is our worlds stephen richter was bad *** enough to survive coles attempt on his life, and although we see him as evil, he is more the being a villain to save his world from a greater evil. and that he isnt as powerful as statesman because like us, he took the slow path of incarnation.
As I said earlier in this thread the simple fact is the noble, selfless, man named marcus cole died long ago. The Tyrant State is all that remains. -
Actually some emotes like that I think could help sate some RPers who wanted to RP street toughs etc thirst to be sure.
-
Ill just say as I do anytime I see a thread like this pop up, is that they could easily do some batwing type vehicles I suspect, using tech we already have in game.
What tech is that you ask?
The Nova form of the Kheldians.
Imagine if you will a device with an hour of use like the jetpacks, but instead put you in a sky raid air skiff or longboy flyer. Like the nova form it could have several blasts powers to make it useful to some extent but not game breakingly powerful.
Largely they would be mostly for flavor effect and maybe some use to twink low lvl characters( making them a craft recipe for example could be interesting) but also help them out during lvl ranges when lack of powers makes it hard to be well rounded. -
Quote:right there with you, althoguh when Inc stuff hit id not dusted off T'Keron in ages, I felt compelled to make sure he was top priority to incarnate up.Chyll himself himself (started circa I7) is still in game, and while I do not necessarily play him regularly - he does get a spin around the block on occasion, including being my first or second to get incarnated and trialed up, etc. etc.
I still have his first costume in one of his slots, and Build 1 on him is his first (and never respec'd) leveling build - mostly SOs, with some IOs (though he fights crime using Build 2 99% of the time).
For those on virtue who where running lambs and bafs alot right after it came out you may recall a certain demon scrapper clearing turrets in lam solo while the team cleared the streets.
I grew quite fond of hearing people go, hey where are all the turrets as the team finished clearing the courtyard and began looking for them. -
I have a pretty severe defination of Original Toons. For me its not just a matter of being your first character, In fact that has nothing to do with it, as most tended to make dozens of throw away test powers until lvl 6 or so toons in mass in thier first days on the game.
No my standard starts with it being that first character that felt RIGHT for you. The one who knew you where taking to 50, back when that meant something, no matter how hard the road lay before you.
The next requirment is it had to be your first 50, no matter how long it took you.
3rd and this is the mean one, to be an original main, it requires to have been made in the first year of the games life. Yeah I know so few first years are left, and so many new citizens are among us.
Well to be fair those characters who have been around that long, with players filled with lore about the game, are in thier own way Icons as deserving of new comers respect as the NPCs like Miss Liberty and Positron.
My own is named T'Keron Valmaz. A katana/SR scrapper on virtue. Based heavily on COX lore my time with him has been rich in moments of feeling as if the game was made just for me. This was especially true after CoV and finally GR to let me turn him intoa true red sider. Several SFs over there when played with my original character on the team often has other players, especially newer ones tripping out thinking I am something like a old member of the cryptic team returning to my baby incognito or something
I have 2 accounts, my younger has its own main, not an original year one hero but still very lore based, and he is in fact the one who shares the name with my forum handle.
When I run Demetrios on the revamped posi tf, part 2 I always go fight the end av solo while the team clears the bombs. Most have said there is little more epic to witness at low lvls then a battle between Doc Vahz and Demetrios Vasilikos, Creys paragon protector given a DNA memory core made from Vahz's DNA. -
Quote:And finished all content 20-24. Wow, that seemed very long compared to the times I have done it redside. Part of it is I am now doing Hero tips, but that is not huge. There is a lot more content Blueside. The Striga storyline was interesting. I love the plaques on Striga about the lost ship, very dark, very human. More on the Sky raiders from another contact. The Sky Raiders are ex-military? Add that to the fact that their commander dresses like Las Vegas showgirl and I think we got a theory on why they left. Not saying there is anything wrong with that, just trying to fit the puzzle together. Nothing else stands out greatly in this level range, except too many hunts. Did I mention too many hunts? Oh, did figure out where the Lost are in Terra Volta. Just a little ways in from the door and down into a pit. And evidently nowhere else. These were tough at 24th, but I only had to run once. The Sky Raider hunt(s) in TV are also easier since there are bands of about 10 Captains who stand on walkways, far to the front right as you enter TV. The doppelganger storyline stood out as very nice. That is the one they added with GR I think? My clone died saving the worlds from my clones...
Now doing First Ward as my first arcs in 25-29. I know I could have done them in 20-24, but decided to shift them into this set. My plan is to do most solo storylines as soon as they come up, even if they are 25-50 or w/e. Task Forces and Trials I will wait until either max level (+3) or until some of my friends mention they are running one I need that I am at least minimum level for. Will be getting Hurl at 26 and Invincibility at 28. Plan is for Fly at 30, and of course Footstomp at 32. I am currently using a Jingle Jet, but at the pace I am on I do not think it will last though too many more levels. Bought some Tuned reactive armors on the Paragon Market. The character is using a lot of tuned partial sets, and that sure does help on a big project like this.
I wrote down all my stats at 24. I will edit the post tonight with all the merits, badges, etc.
Pro Tip: if using a jet pack fits your concept, never take fly. You can just go to firebase zulu and buy one with an hour of fuel for 10k inf as often as you need. Ive got many a former sky raider concept toon who has done just thatif you have a steampack or booster jump pack they will let your jet pack hit fly cap speed often enough to make it viable.
Also keep a WW tp handy, always a useful way to short cut between zones.
Also personally a good solo AT would of been something like Kat/Regen pretty much an unstoppable killer from start to finish. Also very flexible. My BS/regen has 3 different builds, each doing very different things.
One is team centric using leadership, recall, healing pools and capable of stealth ops to short cut as needed on TFs if a team mates time is growing short.
One is solo centric and is built around doing as much as one can do against big baddies. Favors dark mastery, and has not one power useful for helping others in his build outside of I guess his barriar incarnate effect
One kind of meets a middle ground, built for strong solo power while working in teams so say while doing a tf if some team mates are just weak tea i can usually make up for thier lack substantially.
the only problem is the middle one also tends to exemp the best having numerous purple IO sets. so when I exemp down for TFs it still often brings so much power to the table its hard to want to switch to a team centric build
