  1. I would never rejoice at a man's death, but let's face it...that team was never going to treat its players, its former players, and its fanbase with any sort of respect while Bill Wirtz was still alive. The Blackhawks are an Original 6 team. The city of Chicago and the NHL in general deserved better than Bill Wirtz.
  2. I'm perfectly okay with our game's population jumping up by 900k and I would welcome new peeps with open arms.

As far as the Blackhawks go, I'm a longtime suffering fan. I was only 5 years old when they last WON A GAME in the finals (in 1975) and the last time they won the cup was nearly 50 years ago. In the 90s, I watched them make a number of playoff runs with a good, young group of players, only to see those very same players traded away or cast off into free agency because Bill Wirtz didn't want to pay any money for them. I remember Jeremy Roenick, a perennial ALL STAR PLAYER getting traded away for Alexei Zhamov and a sack of magic beans. Then Chris Chelios, Mr. Blackhawk his own bad self, was traded to the Red Wings. THE FREAKING RED WINGS! That was the final straw, and I rebelled with lots of other fans. And you know it's bad when your own Hall of Fame players, like Bobby Hull, have been completely alienated by the franchise.

When Bill Wirtz died, I don't think the body was even cold when his son (and current owner) Rocky Wirtz was on the phone with local TV affiliates. The club has put forth a lot of effort to regain the trust of the fans. Even if the team wasn't in the finals, people would have started coming back to the stadium. Bobby Hull has been seen at multiple games up in the press box high-fiving Rocky after every goal. It's awesome. Bill Wirtz could never have engineered anything like this.

(Please note, by all accounts Bill Wirtz was a nice guy. What he didn't spend on the Blackhawks he spent helping out local charities and such. He just wasn't with the times when it came to modern sports franchises.)

    1) Buffs/debuffs should have a "cancelable" flag that is an indicator of whether or not the affect can be canceled by a player. Stuff like the lab map explosion should not be cancelable. Neither should a player mired in caltrops, or who has had speed siphoned by a Tsoo, etc. Stuff like the Mystic Fortune should be cancelable, and should speed boost, inertial reduction, clear mind, recovery aura, that funky ice encasement armor power, etc.

    2) Hopefully obvious from the stated description above, players should be able to right-click on a buff and cancel it if they want.

    3) A new "affect" is created. This affect is completely invisible and doesn't affect gameplay. I'll call it "Mystic Timer," it lasts 20 minutes, and it is not cancelable.

    4) When Mystic Fortune is cast on someone, it checks to see if the character is under the influence of the Mystic Timer affect. If so, Mystic Fortune is immediately canceled.

    5) When Mystic Fortune is successfully cast on someone (i.e. they're not under the influence of Mystic Timer), it takes affect and triggers the Mystic Timer affect.

This will keep people from simply getting a Mystic Fortune, canceling it, getting another, etc. until they get the one they want. If they cancel it, they can't get another until the Mystic Timer 20-minute timer runs out.

The deal with Teleport that makes it have to have an acceptance prompt is that it can be used for griefing. And I don't mean, "I don't like being buffed!" griefing, I mean the really bad type. Old-timers like me probably remember this, but when the game first came out, there was no teleport prompt. What happened is that griefers would convince people to let them on their team for whatever reason, or teammates would get pissed off, and teleport others off of buildings or into high-level enemies to get faceplanted. There were even some places where you could only get to by teleporting, like the little tower huts in The Hollows, and players would get irrevocably stuck there. I'm just pointing it out because I don't want people to conflate being buffed by the griefing that led to the teleport prompt.

My personal opinion is that there is one situation under which buffs aren't welcome, when people are doing activities like costume contests or stone tank races, where buffs interfere with the activities going on. I've never complained about being speed boosted, I've never complained about getting a Mystic Fortune, and when they removed the prompt, it was perfectly fine by me. I can understand some contrived circumstances under which it might be irritating, but none of them, in my opinion, rise to the level of having the auto-accept revoked.
This is a pretty good solution, but not sure how easy to program it in. With Mystic Fortune, I was all for having a prompt similar to way Teleport works (Auto-accept or Prompt option in the menu). Either solution would keep both sides happy.

They did this for both the CoH and CoV launch. Your outrage should have happened 6 years ago. And 4 years ago.

I already pre-ordered through NCSoft, and I honestly don't see what the big deal is.

Perhaps I'm missing the bigger picture, but you put this much money and effort into an expansion and do minimal advertising. Is this an expansion squarely aimed at retaining veteran players? The expansion itself isn't something that's paid for on a monthly basis...it's a one time buy. Is NCSoft really OK with not pushing for maximum sales on this?

I'll probably never understand corporate business...
You do realize that we're still about two months away from Going Rogue to actually release, right? Maybe a little less than that.

Advertising for games really shouldn't kick off until 1 or 2 weeks before your release.

And E3 is coming in a couple of weeks, which should spike awareness.

Little episode descriptions aren't going to tell you everything. They won't tell you about the characters in a way that does justice to getting to know them through their actions and emotions.

Cliff notes won't show you the wonder in their eyes. The anger in their fists. The love and hate in their hearts. The fear in their faces. The pain in their lives. Yeah, it can tell you about the mystery, but that was only a small part of the show. And like life, not all the answers will come out. So if you really want to understand the big pay off, you're going to have to invest some time into it.
Today, the internet seems chock full of people who "only watched a few episodes" and now fully believe the show "doesn't make any sense" or "the ending of this show sucked."

I've spent the day ignoring them.

Now, whether or not the Island was egging him on is one thing, but Sayid never really turned away from the situations that caused him to think himself as bad.
But I think that's what Hurley was trying to tell him. "You do bad things because people tell you you're bad, so you believe you're bad. But you're really a good person and I believe in you." The irony to all of this was Sayid's "awakening" happened by Hurley introducing him to a bad situation.

I think it makes some sense, because as much as Sayid loved Nadia, she was always a reminder of who he was. Not only did she remind him of his torturer days, but she was tortured by Sayid himself. Their love was always doomed, as it would always cause Sayid to revert to his torturer ways/bad impulses. We saw it when he betrayed his best friend in Sydney to get some info on Nadia. We saw it when, after Nadia's death, Sayid worked for Ben. We even saw it in limbo, when Sayid killed Keamy and crew to protect Nadia.

Sayid and Shannon, on the other hand, allowed each other to start anew. Sayid could be romantic without his past over his shoulder. Shannon could be accepted. They were truly each other's clean slate.
My interpretation was that Nadiya was what Sayid THOUGHT he wanted out of some sort of guilt for his torturing her, but that's all it was. In the sideways world, the various characters were all given those things that they desired on the surface, but were any of them truly happy? Only when they "let go," did they remember what it was that made them happy (and redeemed). In Sayid's case, he believed that he loved Nadiya and that he had lost her, however when he met Shannon he learned to let go of his past and love her. She played a huge role in his redemption story, hence why she was with him at the end.

Those in Limbo can't, for the most part.

Heck, Ana-lucia and Ben were in there, so presumably, they have a chance to move on. Even Sawyer got the chance to, and he was a killer.
    That makes sense now. Thanks!

I didn't want to quote your whole post for space reasons, but wanted to at least put this out here.

I don't think "purgatory" is the right term for what the sideways universe was, as the term has a really negative connotation. Perhaps "limbo" fits better. Since we had a resolution of the island plot line, I never really felt this was a cop out in any way. The island stuff all happened, the characters all had their redemption stories, and they all ended up having great impacts on each others' lives. One of the main themes of the show was "Live together, die alone," and the characters in the church at the end had all made the decision to live together. Out of all the characters we witnessed die, not one of them died alone. (Charlie -- died helping Desmond. Jack -- Vincent sat with him. Jin and Sun -- obviously died together. Shannon -- died in Sayid's arms. Etc.)

As far as the hard science answers go, I wasn't disappointed that we didn't get a bullet point list of how the island works. The island just is. It has properties of extreme electromagnetism and it serves some unknown cosmic purpose. The other theme of the show was "man of science vs. man of faith," and one of the major conflicts was the Dharma Initiative versus The Others (i.e. "The Hostiles"). One group was one of faith and the other one of science. When science tried to explain the island, they did untold damage to it and were eventually wiped out by Ben. There are some things out there that Man is just not meant to learn. Or you can view it as the island being beyond the understanding of what our technology allows. In another comparison, did it help or hurt the mythology when you discovered that the blood of Jedi Knights were full of mitochlorians? I rest my case.

And I think all the literary references were just Easter Egg sorts of clues that were dropped in there at times. The writers were having some fun.
  14. The new shadowing was the only thing that slowed my computer down (I can use the middle setting for the shadows but not the high end setting). The new water effects and reflections worked perfectly at the highest settings for me, and they looked really good.

  16. Okay, good to know. I've been debating about using my tax return to either upgrade my computer or get a new rig. Upgrading means adding a new power source (just saw I'm running at 250 watts ), adding 4 GB of memory, and a new graphics card. (Plus my Network Interface Card needs to be replaced.)

Alternatively, for a bit more, I can get a new computer.

Dumb (or maybe not so dumb) question. Is the GT 220 going to be enough to run Ultramode competently? I'm not looking for a high end machine as COH is about as far up the scale as I go for PC gaming, but my current computer is starting to show its age.

My online team managed to roll a +1 ST for a Wardancer, which is awesome. The bad part of that is this one player does everything for the team.

It probably wouldn't be that way if my Thrower didn't keep getting killed every time he hits level 2.
  19. Wait...you're docking an arc I wrote for the spawn size I have no control over? Or a map that wasn't bugged but now seems to be?

Also...um...didn't name any characters after Buffy the Vampire Slayer...a show I never watched past the first season.

And...there's no "down time" in that arc. I don't even know what that means. Except for the 2nd mission I chose shorter maps to prevent that.

And what does this even mean?

There's no character even remotely resembling that in the arc. If you're going to review something, don't lie about it.

The timed mission also does have different dialogue dependent upon success or failure. I didn't realize there was a rule that a timed mission had to be the final mission.

It's funny...every one else who's run that arc enjoyed it. The noted forum troll did not.

Take from that what you will.

    Thanks for running it, anyway.

That's not QUITE how I work. I actually do try to max out as much recharge as I can, but do so as efficiently as I can. I think a lot of people (those not in this discussion) don't realize how the recharge formulas work. They see "I have 200% recharge," or whatever, and don't fully understand what that means. The laws of diminishing returns factor into recharge and END reduction, big time, so one has to balance the cost of adding even more recharge (cost in INF and slotting choices) versus the overall gain (and versus what you sacrifice by making these choices -- maybe better +regen or +recovery are better choices).

In my stalker examples, adding that extra 7.5 global gets me 0.2 seconds on my high end attack powers, all of which now already recharge before I can rehide. And I checked red side pricing last night...200 - 250 million...or 200 merits. I might be better served trying to save up to get Hecatomb for my AS. (Surprisingly, this was my least expensive character to outfit in 50 IOs so far. Only 120 million to get and build what I needed.) Just playing around last night for the first time since finishing the build, the character was shockingly, disgustingly overpowered compared to where I was pre-level 47. Does spending 200 milllion to gain 13.7 seconds on a power that normally takes 1000 seconds to recharge seem like a fair trade? Maybe. We'll see.

And as one last note: I do have a character where making that financial sacrifice to get that 7.5% global WAS a fair trade. So I'm not totally against Luck of the Gambler -- I just think the price on them is too high for what you get.

    Anyway, sorry for the threadjack.

That's kind of what I do. By the time I get IOs slotted I have tons of recharge and loads of attacks.

I'm slotting out my Stalker right now, and I figured out if I add a LOTG 7.5% global recharge, it will give me an extra 0.8 seconds on my Build Up. Is this worth 120 million?

(But I get an extra 13.7 seconds on Overload!)
  22. How could they fail to mention Doctor Druid?

He would also qualify on a list of worst members of The Avengers ever. And on a list of worst super heroes ever.
  23. It's a horrible requirement. Hopefully my stalker will hit 50 in the next few weeks. Once I get close I'll start running some Paragon Protector hunts in Grandville.

    The Tally

Needed cash red side, so that was the primary focus and was hugely successful.

During the week leading up to double XP weekend I put in lowball bids for Crushing Impact recipes and ended up with 10 complete sets (60 recipes) costing 80 million.

So far I've assembled and sold two complete sets and made 90 million. Basically, if I gave away the other 8 sets I'd already be at a 10 million profit.

Then the Viridian run netted about 60 million after I sold stuff off.

And I found a purple recipe that I haven't decided what to do with yet.

Other than that, got a few levels here and there.
