Quote:Ahh, good point. All the regen in the world will still fall flat on its face with a big enough alpha.Regen's traditional weakness has been in dealing with alpha strikes which is something Tanks have to be able to handle. The new MoG helps deal with that, but it's not up in time for every spawn. I think that might've been one issue that kept it from being proliferated to Tanks.
Regen would be a fun set for Brutes, and due to the high HP cap it could indeed be very powerful. A Regen Brute with all the +HP accolades or just a Frostwork buff would be pretty darn strong.
My question about HP numbers still stands. Do brutes have similar HP to scrappers or tankers? Are the HP caps different?
Also, brutes, try as they might, are not tanks. That's why villains have masterminds. If the alpha strike issue is what keeps regen from being ported to tanks, it shouldn't stop it from going to brutes.

Mercs.
Reduce recharge on SpecOps debuffs/control. -
I understand that regen's power is directly proportional to the character's HP, and that's why tankers don't have it. Tanker HP is enormous and would make /regen overpowered, but I thought brute HP was comparable to scrapper HP. If I'm right, why don't brutes have access to the /regen powerset?
Do you think this is something that could be proliferated in the near future? -

Quote:Very nice post. I've been looking for this for awhile now, as I didn't really understand what you just explained very well. Thanks!
I have a WP brute with 37% defense to Fire/Cold/Energy/Neg Energy, and was planning on spending 600million on a PvP IO for an extra 3% defense to all. Now I'm thinking the difference between 37% and 40% isn't worth 600 million Inf. :P
Remember, the closer you get to the soft cap, the more effect each 1% of defense adds. The difference between 37% and 40% is noticeable. 40% to 43% would be even more so.
Quote:Very informative. However, at what cost does the defense come? Are you sacrificing your own dps to achieve survivability? For tanks and scrappers, I'm sure it is useful to hit soft cap, but as a defender/controller/blaster, there are other forms of damage mitigation which can just as effectively be used to survive.
Sleep a whole spawn and you don't have to defend as much.
Mez/Debuff a boss, and his dps will drop.
Team with a (good) aggro holder and your soft capped defense will be redundant/unnecessary.
While I think that defense is important, it is more important to consider the tradeoff. The original post did a lot to show the effectiveness of the last 5%. For some archetypes, it makes me think that if you can't reach soft cap, don't go out of your way to increase your defense because the gain will be so marginal.
Quote:One thing that nobody seems to have touched on yet, is that high defence values do more than just stop your health dropping.
A lot of those red numbers come with a special added bonus, free of charge - debuffs and mezzes.
High defence values can, at a pinch almost substitute for mez protection, or make existing mez protection far more potent.
...
I do, however appreciate the running of the numbers, and fully endorse the conclusion that the last 5% defence approaching the softcap gives as much mitigation as the rest.
Nice mini-guide-ette
And again, thanks for the compliment. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy that people have read and liked my little numbers experiment. -
Alright, I've added those couple sections that were requested, 10-15%, 40%, and a bit about defense and its effects on mez. I've also included a note on the math at the beginning of this mess.
Thanks to everyone for the warm reception this has gotten; I'm surprised it was so liked. I appreciate all the feedback. -

I go IO's the whole way. Commons until 50, then I start to bling my characters. Of course, I haven't gotten to the bling part yet...
Anyway, what I do is use common accuracy enhancements until I hit level 22, then I start slotting all kinds of commons. I have a main crafting/badge character who runs a supergroup, so I just drop off the salvage with my lowbies and have the badger craft everything. -
Quote:Thanks! I can run the numbers on 10% and 15% pretty easily, as I've managed to get all these formulas into an excel spreadsheet. The difference between 0% and 25% is incredible, even though you're still pretty vulnerable.Very good summary. The only thing I'd add is that while hitting the soft cap is extremely beneficial if you aren't specifically trying to (i.e. most Blasters) getting 10%-15% defense still makes a lot of difference over 0% defense.
Quote:My version of this speech goes something like this:
The last 5% of Defense blocks as much damage as the first 40%.
Quote:well apparently that long hiatus for educational reasons seems to have paid off
now unless your an engineer, that will be the last time you ever have to use that level of math again, math is the great school lie. "you'll need it throughout your life" teachers said, "it will help you almost everyday" they said, "you wont be able to function in society without it" they said, POPPYCOCK!!! wish they had emphasized English as much, THAT would have been useful.
but i am glad you laid all that out, and that i read it, and now i never want to see it again
i can't stand looking at my superheroes/villains like they are nicely adorned wireframe calculators, takes all the life out of the game.
And I'm actually with all those teachers that say math is everywhere. Math, and especially probability and statistics, can be applied to much of your life in a very helpful way. But even this: try getting deals in the grocery store without knowing math. -

This is a known thing, the devs blocked macros and binds from using < and > because it could be used to crash other's computers or something like that.

Quote:Haha! I agree!Had some really great names for my last pet.
My Bots MM I named the three mains 'Apple', 'IBM', and 'Atari', then the mid two 'PC' and 'Mac'.. Then the last one I named for the worst, most destructive thing ever. 'Vista'.
And btw to the sig about hero/vil types. When the EB goes from full to half health in 30 seconds, its the stalker's doing.
I actually recently rolled my first stalker and it cleared up a lot of my misconceptions about the AT. The recent buffs have made them into scrappers that hide, instead of assassin strikes that run away and come back later. Hell, teaming I crit way more often than scrappers.
I try to stay in character, and I set up a few macros to say things like "You see the $target? Yeah, you won't for long." and "$target is already dead, he just doesn't know it yet." and "Dibs on the $target!"
Stalkers are fun, and I guess I should stop perpetuating the stereotype... -

This guide has been moved to my blog, a central location for me to keep all of my content, free to format as I please.
I wrestled with the idea of leaving the guide as is here and keeping the most up to date version on my blog. I ultimately decided that as I make the guide better over time, I won't want old poor versions hanging around. And you're mad if you think I'd like to double my work by updating in two places all the time. -
Is the damage of a proc dependent upon the level of the enhancement?

Quote:Perhaps this is the addition of Euro players to our forums.Something is fishy about that number... unless we've had a massive boost of players (some 40,000 at least) that is not people with "active" accounts.
EDIT: I apologize that this post may seem to imply American superiority over Europeans. This was not intended. Generally, when two groups are merged, it is looked at as the smaller of the two being added to the larger. There is no implied superiority or inferiority, nor should it be inferred. Unless you're French. -
Quote:My only point here was that at least the blaster doesn't have to chase the target for a headsplitter. Let fireball fly and move on. The argument wasn't between single target and AoE, it was between melee and ranged.I have to admit that the AoE-damage types do better against scattered foes than Scrappers, all of whom (except possibly Spines) do great single-target damage? I don't see why a Fireball, or Burn, or whatever, is better against a lone "scattered" target than a Headsplitter.

Quote:He is saying that because a tank can herd and pack a group tight much quicker than a scrapper can, if the scrapper can do it at all.So let me get this you say if a Tank or a Brute leaves the group and goes into the next group get all the big attack out of the way he is a good play but a Scrapper that does this is a bad player? Because that is what your saying.
Of course, the scrapper leaves a much smaller group to be packed tight. -
Quote:Careful now, the same is true for defense sets.All-Resists was a noble experiment, but unlike "pure" Defense sets, Resist, all on it's own, is nearly worthless (you will die, it's just a matter of time).
Assuming you have 35% defense, the odds of you getting hit each time there is a swing is 15%. After 5 swings, it is more likely that you've been hit once than not hit at all. The odds of getting hit twice in a row is just over 2%, but the odds of being hit at least twice in a succession of 5 swings is 34.99%. With no resists, those two hits could hurt. There's also the streak breaker code to take into account.
As the number of swings increase, your odds of escaping damage plummet. With only defense to save you, it is only a matter of time before you die.
Aggregate odds kill you. -

Quote:I would support this, however I have no problems with things the way they are.The only change I would recommend is switching the places of Triage Beacon and Acid Mortar in the lineup. Acid Mortar is immediately useful to the MM with little slotting and one of the key powers of the set; Triage Beacon is more optional and really requires heavy slotting (which usually isn't available until much later in a build because of priorities) to bring it up to reasonable effectiveness.
Putting a power that becomes a forced choice at level four, and that won't be useful until much later, is a poor arrangement for the player. -
Bump, because how awesome is a macro that says on your favorite global channel "$target TF forming up on $server. PST to $leader for invite, meet in $zone. We've got $team_size so far."
-
Thanks! I ran out of lines, otherwise I'd have included the others. I got my favorites in there at least.

Quote:I was just assuming a typo. C and S are somewhat close... sorta...Are you sure you didn't turn the in-game filter off? I know I did, hence why I never would've found that out myself.
Either way, I don't see how one *lits a throat, anyway, or why an in-game enemy, outside of AE if that's relevant, would say that.
Maybe the Knives are kinky like that. I dunno.
EDIT: You are correct. I have my filter turned off.
