  1. There's a school of thought that says that your bio should only state what is known publically. So if your character has a secret identity, don't put it in your bio. That said, I can't help but write enormous backstories for my characters and then try and cram them into the tiny bio space. Generally, (I'll use Scorpio Rose as an example) I put ((Roleplayer - Has small rat on shoulder, demon tail is in fact a scorpion tail with stinger on the end)). Then I'll do my backstory business. The stuff in brackets is enough to fill in any details that the avatar can't cover.

That said, if a complete stranger used something in my bio with no way to reason ICly how they had found out, I would probably end my conversation with them pretty rapidly.

I thought it was opened a few years after the First World War, seeing as 2 people went looking for it to help cure one of their issues with some mustard gas. Also, natural and magic heroes would have still existed, as well as a few rare science/tech ones and maybe 1 in a billion mutants. The release of the Well of the Furies energy only accelerated things and made more heroes come into the world, I thought.

Marcus Cole vanished in 1918 as he went off to explore the world. He returned in 1931 with superpowers. According to the game history on the US website anyway. The only reference to superpowers BEFORE them is the Greek heroes of ancient history.

It was only while lying in the dentist’s chair earlier that I realised that I was about a decade out with that date. And it’s fairly shocking given that I only finished reading Web of Arachnos last month.

Still, I was simply suggesting it as an example of canon that may not be widely known. As it is, my main is much older than that but I can RP my way around it by incorporating it into his backstory. However some may not know that and therefore haven’t considered it. It would be, for example, like someone RPing a Rikti without knowing what they actually are. Or RPing an evil version of Statesman without having ever read or done a Praetorian arc. In short, if someone wishes to use game canon in their story (and Khelds count as they do tie into the city’s history) then research is needed.

I had a point originally but work and anaesthetics are robbing me of my capacity to focus…
  3. Not an easy question to answer. Canon often leaves us wanting and where some people choose to fill in the blanks, they may well do so differently to someone else. Personally, I try to steer clear of relating to canon too much although sometimes I will take it as a starting block for new characters, stories etc.

When encountering new players/characters, we have to make a series of assumptions e.g. that the avatar reflects their character in terms of appearances and powers as in your example. If there is something significantly different about them, then using the bio is about the only option available to us. For example, one of my characters is heavily scarred but apart from faces, I can’t represent that on any other part of their body therefore, the information goes in their bio. If I know I’m going to be interacting with someone for more than a few sentences, that’s where I’ll look in case there’s something I need to be taking note of i.e. that the creature on Rose’s shoulder is not a fluffy panda but a rat. I’m all for them being used but some people choose not to. If I’m roleplaying with someone and their bio is blank, I have to run with what I can see in front of me.

There are times when appearances need to be overridden by the GM, for example when using a Council mission to represent private guards but then that is within the confines of that team and shouldn’t affect anyone else. Recently we’ve been passing off the Ouroboros cathedral as the Paragon Art Museum if we want to use a flashback arc but don’t want to use time travel. Again, this should only affect people in that team though.

Where canon does get overridden, it’s normally due to ignorance. The time line of world events in the CoX universe is not that well publicised so it’s easy to make mistakes. In some ways, superheroes should not have existed before 1940 (when the Well of the Furies) was opened, so anyone with a hero that predates that might have problems. But then, not everyone knows about that backstory. I hold my hand up of being guilty of that mistake in the past.

In the end, we RP by consensus, by agreeing on certain events. If an SG or team is happy to concede that said Scrapper has a Nictus dwelling inside of them then all fine and dandy. But when taking that character to either GG or PD where there’s no established consensus amongst the people present, we’re reduced to using the tools the game gives us, ATs, powers and of course, the bio. And therein lies the problem.

Anyway, I’m rambling now so I’ll shut up.

    Rp Super Groups

The 'Creative' section of this forum may be of help

    [/ QUOTE ]

No idea why you'd want the Creative section, I'd suggest looking at the Roleplay section instead. There's a thread there which lists RP Supergroups. Link

The list is fairly old now but most of the groups will be on Union due to it being the 'unofficial RP server'. That said, I'm sure there are a few running around on Defiant.

    Hope that helps.

Erebus had felt no need to comment when asked. What did the whole world matter to him? He was happy to wait patiently, watching their plan for 'liberating' the Liberty Islands come to fruition. Only then would he know whether he was wasting his time or whether his colleagues truly held the power to shape the world to their bidding.

    Time would tell, he thought.
  6. I don't PvP hugely but I do sometimes take on my friend in the arena who is TA/A and he puts up a good fight against my Sonic/En Blaster.

Glue Arrow is particularly nasty for squishies as it slows them to a crawl, depriving them of the mobility essential for squishy survival. Plus Disruption Arrow also prevents me from using Aid Self. Last week, when teamed with a Fire Blaster, he managed to kick my posterior a few times.

Not sure how one would fair against something with higher HP and shields but I certainly don't think it's impossible to PvP with one.

    Castle B?thory

Lord Erebus shrugged his thin shoulders.

"The spirits seemed more preoccupied with whether they would receive their sacrifice rather than what we do with the island itself," he replied. "I see no reason why we could not tap the energies of the earth. I will be going to commune some more with some of the native spirits of the region shortly. I will make sure that they are not surprised by our heavy machinery."
  8. I reckon at some point they'll open up all the Tank powers to Brutes. Cleaving your way through foes with a battle axe is very 'Brutish' in my opinion.
  9. Dante

    Castle B?thory

“The spirits have been calmed,” reported Erebus. “The dominant presence on the isle is that of the volcano, a very old fire spirit from what I can tell. Despite it receiving an upturn in worship from the locals, it was in no way sated with their superficial sacrifices and maudlin platitudes. A simple sacrifice of blood will be all that is required to keep them satisfied. If it is sated, the other native spirits are likely to fall in line.”

Erebus took another sip of his wine. Perhaps it was a sign of his contentment that he actually tasted something this time.

“The spirit is old and bloodthirsty,” he continued. “As long as it is supplied with human sacrifice on a regular basis, we should see no trouble from it. I had considered perhaps a temple of sorts, something to focus the energies of the area.” He allowed himself a small chuckle. “I must admit, having an active volcano which requires people to be thrown into it regularly will be an expedient way of disposing with some of our enemies. I find it a somewhat… traditional approach if you will.”

The smile that graced his thin lips was his most common, that which appeared when someone was about to suffer.

Shame I used up my last global rename token. Otherwise I'd change my name to Kettle.

Am I going to buy it? Not sure. Some of my characters wear all formal wear so a new suit or two will come in handy. But I can't ever see me using the emotes.

Still, it's a bit pricey for what it is. Plus I feel like I'm purchasing an add on for The Sims.

"Then you shall hear of it shortly," declared the bold tones of Lord Erebus as he entered. "Forgive the entrance my friends, but I have a liking of the theatrical."
  12. IC quotes (i.e. public statements) from my characters:

Dante: "He was a brave warrior and we will feel his loss."

He would be all stoic as always and unfeeling about the whole affair.

Amber: "Britanic helped to bring about massive changes to Kings Row and the Militia and Paragon and now he's gone, we'll really really miss him. If anyone knows anything, tell us. It's so unreal, him really being gone..."

She would be actively holding back the tears and blubbing slightly into a hankie.

Looks like a job for the most forgotten Field Commander in the history of the Militia: GhostSpy.

SERIOUSLY GUYS. Dante isn't the only Death Mage in the Militia. *Slaps Jay and Merrow* I know he's invisible IC and he hasn't acknowledged his necromantic nature but-- ah what's the point *Cracks open a bottle of Gin and mourns his Candy Bar*

He's not forgotten and we all miss him.
  13. I can't check the pics from work but on some of them Crimson Archer and Dante Carver were also present. Dante will be in a long black coat with a black ponytail, Crimson has a brown ponytail and an eyepatch. I can't remember who else attended additional to the list above but then I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning.

I'm not sure what quotes would be gained as I thought it was a private affair not a public event. I could be wrong though.

Not a chance! He's as much at the whim of the gods as the next person!

Be safe out there Brit. We'll keep the chair warm for you.
  15. Well I can't really add more to this lovefest but I'll try.

I can honestly say that the Militia wouldn't be in the shape that it's in now if it wasn't for Britanic as its strong figurehead. But also you went out of your way to provide both RP opportunities while creating an open and welcoming environment on both hero and villain sides. The RP community will be poorer for our loss and I certainly hope that you will be able to return soon.

Take care out there in the real world and don't forget us.

    TA/A Defender

Slightly off topic but IIRC, the boost to flight speed that Swift gives is pretty tiny in comparison to run speed. I seem to recall seeing figures in another thread that suggested that slotting three Fly SOs in Swift would be less than a second Fly SO in Hover. I'll have a look around and see if I can confirm it.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
Here's my unpolished rule list to start us off:

<ul type="square">[*]OOC all participants must understand the potential powers of their opponents.[*]All characters should react in a way that makes sense within the Comic Book 'City of...' Universe, taking into account the powers of their opponents.[*]Players must agree not to God-Mod others and may not decide whether an attack hits an opponent nor its effects on them.[*]Players require consent from all involved for their character to use an un-blockable/un-dodgable attack, or a potentially lethal finishing move.[/list]Now, I'm not a true RP veteran like some of our players, so I don't really know how to lay down rules or even how to word them. Thus the above is simply an example that isn't perfectly worded nor complete. If anyone would like to disagree with any of these rules or alter them significantly please do be my guest so long as you have a good explanation to do so.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Regarding rules, I think that the most essential thing you should establish beforehand is what a person is willing to have done to their character. So between the two combatants, agree what levels they're willing to go to. Will the fight be a friendly tussle, a scrap, a no-holds barred brawl or will there be a fatality at the end? Establish what each person is willing to agree to and stick with that.

As for deciding outcomes, unless there is a specific reason for one of the opponents to lose the fight, I would think that deciding who wins and loses before the fight begins would detract from some of the thrill of the battle.
  18. A tricky one. Forum RP is nice and descriptive but it's sloooooooow. And for those times when you need the event relayed to the world at large the next day, innappropriate. However on the other hand, in game PvP can be too fast and unless you want to trawl through combat logs it may not be too clear exactly what happened when. Plus also, you're restricted to in-game powersets which means that ripping up that lamp-post and thwacking your foe with it is out of the question.

I have had one idea and it's still one I'm keen to try out sometime. The Militia site has a chatroom facility which could allow for much quicker interaction between foes. Two people (or more) could log in and RP the match between them, keeping the descriptions nice and short. Once the fight is laid out, one could then copy the log and revise it, adding in descriptions, reactions, thoughts etc just as a collaborative story would be. Both players review it and agree before posting.

There could even be a moderator or referee observing as has been suggested to either judge between the combatants or to throw in events from their environment while they battle. If you fancy trying this some time, I'd like to give it a go myself.

But I'm curious to see what others come up with as well.

  20. Your best bet is to do a little digging on the forums and see where seems best for you. There are a few Roleplaying Supergroups around, as stickied at the top of this page and they tend to be the most reliable place to find regular RP. Other than that, keep an eye out for community events and tag along. Pocket D can be a bit hit and miss in terms of RP so you might need to persevere a little. Galaxy Girl is still going as well as far as I'm aware which is a gathering of roleplayers behind the Hero Corps building in Galaxy City. I think it tends to get going around 8pm but I'm not sure on that point.

And of course, I should mention the Wiki which lists hundreds of roleplayers and their groups and should give you an idea of what kind of things people get up to. Most groups tend to have a theme of sorts so aim to find something that matches your style. Again, link at the top of the RP page.

    Good luck with your search!

Lord Erebus had said very little. He didn't feel that there was much to be said when there were other, far more verbose people in the group who could do the talking. Had he have had much of an ego, he could have felt slightly affronted at being 'issued orders'. But those sort of feelings of pride are associated with humanity and Erebus had lost most of that a long time ago. The island sounded interesting and the ressurrection of some ancient pagan religion meant that it would be rife for exploitation. It would not take much to sway the local spirits to side with him, which was a pleasing thought. Let the others worry about politics and planning. All he wanted was the arcane power that the volcano seemed to promise. He could almost sense the fury of it from here. He allowed a small smile to play across his thin lips.

"Very well," he murmered, already planning his next move.

    Sisarose Mansion

Lord Erebus nodded in acquiescence as he dropped his cloak of invisibility. The field had been a risk but he knew of far too many psychics who liked to keep track of his whereabouts.

"I have heard of them," he replied. "An island state I believe. Aside from an active volcano I have considered them beneath my notice. What is their political situation?"

"I can at least assure you that we are free from psychic interference," said a voice from the corner of the room. Although invisible, the sneer apparent in the tone made it evident that it came from Lord Erebus. "I have no expertise with technology but I did feel it appropriate that we are shielded from any such arcane prying. I took the liberty of surrounding this fine building with a field designed to deflect such interference. I hope that our host does not object. Even so, I am not in favour of attendance by remote control!"

    Mother In City Hall Clash

Dramatic scenes occurred yesterday outside City Hall as an impassioned mother pleaded for the life of her child. Lauren Reinhart, 29 of Cotton Terrace, Kings Row, held a press conference appealing for help in tracing her missing child in the Etoile Isles. Skye Reinhart, aged 6, was last seen two months ago during a raid on Talos Island bank by Arachnos forces. Her mother, hiding them from the battle scenes outside, lost track of where her daughter was.

“There was the sound of gunfire outside, windows were being smashed and we hid until the spiders were fought off,” says Ms Reinhart. “When they stopped, I looked up and Skye was gone.”

Since then, Ms Reinhart has been relentless in trying to track her missing daughter. The heroes present on the day of the raid have all been questioned and no trace of the child has been found. Ms Reinhart today petitioned City Hall to send a delegation to the Etoile Isles to begin investigations over there.

“There has been no sign of Skye in two months,” she stated, “I can only conclude that she was either taken by Arachnos forces or by one of the street gangs in the area. I call upon City Hall and Lord Recluse himself to help me to find my child.”

So far, no official word has been received from the Island state. City Hall refused to comment on the matter.

    Singer Collapses in Club

Paramedics were called last night to the Score Club in Founders Falls when their guest artist collapsed on stage. Saffron Mackenzie, 19, was only on her third song when she fainted, much to the alarm of the watching crowd. An ambulance was called and Miss Mackenzie was treated later for concussion, the source of which was undisclosed. Preston Maguire, manager of the Score Club later issued an apology to the club’s patrons and wished Miss Mackenzie a speedy recovery.
