The important question you should ask yourself is, what ELSE will you be using it for? The Macbook Air is a great compromise laptop because it's so lightweight, yet it can still do just about everything you want it to. The Asus performance would be better though if you intend only on using it as a gaming PC desktop substitute.

Here's how these hacks work: You see at the bottom of the page here where it says "Powered by vBulletin"? Every time one of this board's pages turn up in Google search, that text is visible.
These bots similar to search engines look for pages like that, and they look for things like file attachment forms, avatar upload forms, pretty much anything that will store a file on the server - and attempts to upload a Perl (.pl) or PHP (.php) script. If it's successful, it calls that script from its URL (same as if you view a picture that's attached to a post).
If that fails, it tries guessing admin passwords for both the message board and for FTP, also with the same goal of uploading and then calling a script.
The script that's called checks for writable PHP and Perl files in the server's web space and alters them. Then you're infected.
FYI, this is the biggest reason why the CoH message boards don't allow any file attachments and require you to host your avatar elsewhere. -
Based on your analysis, TonyV, I sent you a PM that I hope will get you out of the woods.
-
I'm glad you got it figured out. Sorry for the abrupt cutoff reply earlier, I didn't want to be responsible for accidentally directing you to break your CoH client so you couldn't play anymore when I wasn't sure if I could fix it from here.
-
I apologize for sounding harsh, but at this point I'm going to have to say it may not be safe for you to change the City of Heroes system files.
I usually only recommend such modifications for people who are familiar enough with the function of the game files to recover themselves from any mistakes (the CoH Guide has warnings to that effect). For those who require very detailed instructions, it's likely they're going to get themselves into trouble that I can't help fix. I can't in good conscience be the cause of that.
If you'd like, you can contact Support and see if they'll send you instructions and take responsibility for any problems. -
I don't know all the steps for actually creating and placing the files, but I can tell you where to put them. It's the same place as in the Vidiotmaps section of my guide (in the signature):
1. Right-click the City of Heroes application and select "Show Package Contents".
2. Open the Contents, then Resources, then transgaming, then c_drive, then either "coh" or "Program Files" and then "City of Heroes".
3. Open or create a "data" folder.
Other than that, you can use Textedit in place of Notepad where they suggest you use it. -
Looks like it uses a mechanism similar to Vidiotmaps, so it should work.

What the heck is a Popmenu?
-
Double-click the Properties. Likely the path to the City of Heroes application isn't correct.
-
Winterminal is right, it's kind of a known issue and we're all waiting for a fix.
-
Did you contact Support yet? They'll probably ask you for a System Information log so they can determine what you might have installed and if that's interfering.
-
That makes sense, Norton quarantines the file halfway through and the other half doesn't make a whole file.
I use Sophos instead, it hasn't to date been obnoxious. It's also free. -
Try making a copy of any random application and renaming the copy to "City of Heroes", and then putting it in the same folder as NC Launcher.
-
Looks like some file NCLauncher is trying to read into memory is too large for it to handle. Try throwing out your City of Heroes preferences (you'll need to use the Go menu in the Finder and type ~/Library/Preferences to find those) and then try launching NCLauncher again. If that fails, you may have to re-install both NCLauncher and City of Heroes.
-
The hash error means you're having trouble downloading the patch file intact. If only I remembered how the patch server hierarchy worked I could tell you how to download it manually (it's a basic web server).
Anyone else remember or have it documented? -
I'm curious what shows up in thr Console log before the Terminating message above. Can you post a few lines before that from the log? (it's in Applications/Utilities).
-
Is there a possibility that you are logged in using a limited (non-administrator) account?
-
Check the Properties for City of Heroes (expand the triangle, double click the word Properties). Odds are the Path is set wrong. Click Browse and select the correct City of Heroes application.
You may have to do this every time, as the preferences don't set correctly. -
Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro means you're using nVidia, I believe. First, throw away your NC Launcher preferences. Do that by using the Go menu in the Finder, and typing ~/Library/Preferences, and throw out the file that's something like com.ncsoft.nclauncher.plist.
After that, throw out the NC Launcher application itself, and download it again from here: http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/my_acc..._of_heroes.php
See if it behaves better after that. -
I'm starting to believe there are problems with Steam. See if you can install the NCSoft Launcher separately from Steam.
-
This is a new one. Please post which Mac and MacOS X version you're using.
-
Code 2 is file not found. Either the path to the CoH application is incorrect or it's damaged.
To test the first one, double-click the Properties link in the Launcher and check the path listed there. Even if it looks correct, click Browse and select the actual CoH application again. You might have to do that every time, because the NC Launcher still has a problem saving its preferences correctly.
If everything is correct, you'll have to uninstall CoH and re-install it to get it to work again. -
Whether you liked Apple or not, Steve Jobs exhibited the kind of boundless inventiveness and vision that embodies the spirit of American ingenuity. There are tragically so few left like him. Let's all hope his life and his passing inspire a new generation of inventors and visionaries.
-
Check the Properties for CoH in the NC Launcher, it's probably set to the wrong path.
-
Right after you attempt to launch CoH, open Console (Applications > Utilities) and then copy the last page of text and paste it here.
That might provide a clue.
