NC Launcher won't launch

Attempts at launching the NC Launcher fail without opening a window. Looking at the Activity Monitor, I can see the memory demands of NC Launcher expanding until all available memory is taken up, and then it fails, with a message that contains the following:

Quote:
Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSMallocException', reason: 'Out of memory. We suggest restarting the application. If you have an unsaved document, create a backup copy in Finder, then try to save.'
*** Call stack at first throw:
I'm running a macbook pro with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz and fully updated Snow Leopard (10.6.8). It's installed using my administrator account. I've tried the fixes in the sticky above (clearing the cache, manually and with the terminal, trashing preferences) and it simply gives the same error every time.

Halp!

I'm having the exact same issue with my game. I download the NCLauncher for Mac, open it up, it bounces a couple times, and then my computer gets really laggy for a bit, and then it closes unexpectedly with the same error report here.

And I know I can run the game, I played it on this same computer last year after Going Rogue was released.

Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro means you're using nVidia, I believe. First, throw away your NC Launcher preferences. Do that by using the Go menu in the Finder, and typing ~/Library/Preferences, and throw out the file that's something like com.ncsoft.nclauncher.plist.

After that, throw out the NC Launcher application itself, and download it again from here: http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/my_acc..._of_heroes.php

See if it behaves better after that.

After doing this and redownloading the laucher, the User Agreement form pops up, and after hitting accept, a window pops up for a split second before closing, and then it goes back to what it did before - memory usage swells until the app eventually dies.

Looks like some file NCLauncher is trying to read into memory is too large for it to handle. Try throwing out your City of Heroes preferences (you'll need to use the Go menu in the Finder and type ~/Library/Preferences to find those) and then try launching NCLauncher again. If that fails, you may have to re-install both NCLauncher and City of Heroes.

I haven't even been able to install City of Heroes, and I've reinstalled NCLauncher multiple times after throwing out the preferences folders. Still nothing.

Nothing different.

I am having this exact same problem today.

Did anyone ever figure out what caused it? I tried everything suggested above. I have 16GB RAM coming today, so hopefully that will make it possible to allocate 80 bytes.

What's the exact location of your City of Heroes app (not the Launcher)?
/Applications/City of Heroes.app

The default. Same folder is the launcher.

Also: today, the iMac has 16GB ram.

Lucky for me I have the PC version on bootcamp :-)

No, this started before yesterday. I upgraded the RAM last night.

Does anyone have any idea what to do about this? I don't always have the luxury of using Boot Camp.

The application starts to allocate RAM to itself, going form maybe 400 MB to eventually 2.3 MB. Then it crashes. Even though I have 11 GB free.

Oh I did that many many times. I've trashed, redownloaded and reinstalled NC launcher and pretty much everything I could find in the forums here, the FAQ, etc.

This just seems to be the big unsolved mystery. The machine is now upgraded to Lion so we'll see.

In the end, I just trashed COH, COH Test and ejected my bootcamp disk.

Now, it's downloading the whole game again. Will do the same for my son's Mac and then we can play together again.
