Your logic holds if people subscribe to both games. If enough people left CoH for Aion*, however, NCsoft would have no problem in shutting CoH down. It doesn't matter that each game is owned by the same company. Each title must stand on its own. The success of NCsoft's other games did not save Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault or Dungeon Runners.
Now, if people playing CoH also subscribe to Aion, that is indeed a win-win for NCsoft. But I wonder how many people who play MMOs subscribe to more than one at a time? (I honestly do not know.)
* I think this is unlikely, as the games do not have a lot of overlap -
Ah. Yeah, I suspect it may be that the FPS there is, as you say, very much like a rollercoaster.
-
I've never played any MMO where weather effects impacted framerate and every MMO I've played with weather effects has allowed them to be disabled, since they are cosmetic.
What MMO were you playing where it affected your FPS, Sigium? -
I remember when they had an ATI rep on the forum (ATI Ruby or something like that) and although she put on a brave face, it was like watching someone getting lowered into a tank of hungry sharks.
Has there been any update on the ATI problems in the game since then? -
I don't think that's it, NT. Other MMOs (EQ2, for example) allow their players access to all servers, regardless of region.
-
That I can agree with. A lot of the UI in that game is...suspect. But that's a topic for another thread (and subforum)!
-
Anyhoo, I agree with the notion that the EU and NA servers should not be segregated from each other. It certainly doesn't help the players.

Quote:Then let me counter you by saying I didn't mind it at all. They're just names in a video game. Doesn't bother me one way or the other that someone else in the game might have chosen the same name for a character as me (unlikely to happen, anyway, since I favor oddball names to begin with).Let me just say I *hated* that in CO with a passion. HATED. One of many things that verified, for me, I'd never go past a trial with it.
Different strokes and all that. I'd say changing the way names works isn't in the cards for CoH, anyway, but the devs have shown they're not afraid to make pretty sweeping changes to the game more than five years out, so who knows? -
Interestingly, the EU and North American server maintenance times were recently merged. It may not be a sign of anything to come, though, in regards to EU players on NA servers or vice-versa.

The dev communication has been great over the years and it really is a boon to the community. Whether it's War Witch's excitement over Hero Con, BackAlleyBrawler explaining in detail how the animation system works or Castle offering his rationale for a power change (whether you agree with it or not), they've always been very open and receptive.
There are always going to be disagreements and criticism -- it goes with the territory when you work on an MMO, which counts on a stable community of players for its very survival -- but the devs handle that stuff in stride. Okay, occasionally they might seem a little grumpy, but we're all just human. -
Quote:There are already a lot of fallback options in the game to reduce the load from visual effects. I'm pretty sure any graphics update would allow you to use those to strike a balance between good framerate and decent visuals.A visual upgrade is unnecessary. Of course, that is just my opinion, but I would prefer to not invest in new hardware to run the only computer game I play, thank you very much.
I'm very much in favor of a visual update. The game is looking a bit dated at this point and I think the designers could actually get a lot of bang for the buck without exacting a huge reduction in performance if they approach a visual refresh with equal regard for optimization and aesthetics.
In other words, have faith! (and hope they learned a thing or two from the Grandville experiment)
The design if the Praetorian Clockwork is pretty nice but not very Clockworky. Then again, it is Praetoria... -

I could be totally offbase but it wouldn't surprise me if sometime in the next year or two they completely erase the distinction between North American and European servers, allowing players to simply play on whatever server they preferred. I think if they did this they'd probably merge a couple, though, taking the total number from 15 down to something more like 12.
But NCsoft may be completely satisfied with the way things are set up now, so it's more likely the current situation will remain as is. -
Not to mention the CoH booth at PAX features very large artwork for Going Rogue. Seems at least a little odd that they would have *nothing* new to say on the expansion.

It's the weekend so I suspect your name will be fixed up come Monday (Pacific time).

You could try PMing a community rep to see if they'd add it back. vBulletin supports custom titles, they just got stripped in the process of moving over from UBB (like the avatars).
I miss my The List Guy title, too. -
All graphics upgrades are purely visual.
Really, none of them are "needed" but I want the game to look better. It's almost always possible to offer lower settings for people who have machines that can't quite keep up.
Speaking of which, another update I just remembered -- an optimization pass in zones/areas where there are LOD issues and the game starts to chug, even on decent machines. That really shouldn't be happening (Grandville is a good example of this). -
Quote:Any video card that can run CoH now with all of the visual effects enabled could handle whatever improvements they are likely to make to the game's graphics and fallback modes would probably be in place for those with lesser cards. I'd imagine the game would auto-detect your card and adjust the settings the first time you ran the spiffed-up version of the game. From that point, some options might be disabled or restricted depending on the memory or throughput on your video card but I doubt they'd add stuff that would require, for example, a Shader 3.0-enabled card. None of this would require a new game engine, though systems might have to be written or rewritten, which could amount to a similar level of work, depending on the goals. In response to the graphics comments, I was wondering just what constituted an upgrade. Does the addition of fingers, toes, a walk animation, a smoother skeleton with more costume anchor points and so on require a better graphics -engine- or a better -quality- of graphics without the need for more intensive graphics processing power?
I don't know the answer to this one, but my observation is that if you have better looking environments, better looking character models and so on, you seem to need a better graphics card to represent it. Is that a better engine or better quality issue? I'm not too sure.
My own wish list for Going Rogue in terms of graphics would be a thorough pass on all of the legacy costume textures, as some are pretty low-res by today's standards, and a similar pass for world and NPC textures. Basically, get rid of all the old fuzzy textures and replace them with crisp, sharp ones. I'd also like to see improved geometry for hands and feet. Add that "back" category, too, so we can wear jetpacks and such as regular costume pieces.
I'd also like to see some zone revamps where a lot of the generic buildings are replaced with a more varied set of "handcrafted" structures. Basically, make the zones look more like a living city instead of a fairly bland sea of building prefabs stamped all over the place.
Weather effects would be nice and despite what the Chicken Littles would tell you, they can be added without killing (or even affecting) framerate if done properly. They'd be cosmetic only and you'd have an option to turn them off, if desired.
My final big request for graphics (barring things I'm forgetting) would be an improved lighting model. The lighting in the game is very flat and door missions with special lighting tend to end up with things looking too bright or too dark. I'd like to see dynamic lighting added. If you throw a fireball down a darkened hallway, I want to see the walls reflecting the glow as it flies past. And, of course, an option to revert to the flat lighting model for people who couldn't run with the new lighting at what they felt would be an acceptable level of performance. -
This happened when they added the ragdoll physics to the game. All of the magic store signs were replaced with a new version that could swing if you bumped into it. Previously the signs for the two magic stores had slightly different dimensions but only one size was made for the new swingin' version. Instead of reworking the textures for both shops, they apparently decided to give Tabitha the boot instead.
She now lives in a hollowed-out tree trunk in Croatoa with a pet pumpkin. -
Woo, no more underscore. That was fast, thanks!
* does the 'no underscore' dance * -
Hello, Mr. Skeleton.

Because of the previous glitch, mine no longer sync up with when I activated my account. I just checked again, though, and the vet reward has kicked in. Hurray!

Quote:Yes, this is something that can be adjusted in the admin settings. Specifically under vBulletin Options/General Settings there is a section called Thread/Forum Read Marking Type. The pop-up help for the options detail them thusly:Can the length of time the boards use to mark posts as read be changed on vBulletin?
Quote:This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.
1. Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.
This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.
2. Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.
This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.
3. Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.
This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.
