The final ambush should include a boss. When you get close to defeating him, he suddenly cons friendly and begs you to stand down, so you can click on him and start a conversation. The boss explains how they got wind of your little kidnapping plot and decided to steal the ambassador from you after you had finished off all the Longbow for them. But you've bested them, and so now the boss is offering to BUY your newly acquired victim from you.

So then you can decide to hand off the ambassador to Kool Aid Man 0-1-0, and get an extra reward or something. Or, you can tell him to stick it and then continue to beat the stuffing out of him, and ransom the ambassador yourself.

    Mission complete!

EDIT: I almost forgot. This is the City of Villains, right? There's always the third option of taking the Malta's money anyway, and then beating the stuffing out of Mr. Stay Puft 0-5-1, and then ransoming the ambassador. Win!

    Fixed that for you.

EDIT: I just remember where you can still see him in the game.

So, an ambassador from the United Kingdom is dropping by home sweet home. This would be a perfect opportunity to kidnap the poor fool and use his power and connections for your own. Maybe the UK will even pay you handsomely for his safe return. Even if they refuse to negotiate and send in a rescue team to try and stop you it'll just give you an opportunity to show the world you're not to be trifled with.

    Kidnap the UK Ambassador!
I'm guessing the foes in that mission would be Longbow, who are there to protect the ambassador. Maybe even a hero that's standing next to him.

The ambushes though should totally be Malta. This time, it's them reacting to your proactive machinations.

LOL, you think I'm mad at you?

Well, I guess we know who thinks a bit highly of themselves around here.

Really, just about everything you've said in this entire can be condensed to "I don't like it, because it does nothing useful." And "Because I don't like it, I don't think it should even be available for anyone else."

But yeah, somehow I'm the irrational one. Go figure.

City is predicated on the notion that the character does jobs for other people. That is it. It's not a sandbox game and it never will be. Playing a villain in this game means playing a mercenary doing black-bag jobs and it always will. No, having the NPCs who are actually calling the shots the whole time kiss up to the PC does not help. It comes off like this.

Thus my earlier comment "if you're trying to score a touchdown in bowling, ur doin it wrong". Players have to create characters that fit the game. Adjust your expectations accordingly or go play something that better fits them. If you play villains here you're not going to be the mastermind and you're not going to change the status quo, end of story.

I think you're talking about Social Darwinism, which is closer to how Lord Recluse runs his little empire. However, that's not free choice either.

But speaking of Darwin, allowing everyone to do whatever they want is certainly no guarantee that that will weed out the dumb people. In fact, if the environment favors those with less intelligence over those with higher intelligence (for whatever reasons), well then... guess what?

It would be a cool thing if such variables were there, with the ability to be defined by the user. Let's continue use Super Strength as an example. Suppose that could bring up a window of ticky-boxes that gave you an extensive selection of choices based on your power sets and origin. "Physical capability" might be the first, and default selection for Super Strength, you could instead select "tactile-telekinesis" for it...

On second thought this is already starting to sound like a bad idea just on the possible permutations of choices alone, let alone having to tailor NPC interactions and dialog based on those choices. That would be such a tremendous amount of work. As well, would you have to make these choices right from the start? Would most people just not bother with it because it's such a slow and tedious process to go in there and select all of the right details, and so they'd just go for the default settings? Maybe you could delay doing it all until later. But how much later? Until level 5? Level 10?

I'm kinda curious why you say that? I'm not trying to argue with you about it really, as I'm kind of indifferent about the situation. But I'm still curious about exactly why others think it's a bad idea.

People talk about wanting to see "City of Heroes 2" but I'd love to see City of Heroes 0. I'm just not sure any dev team in existence today could pull it off, anywhere.
You know, I'm of the opinion that Paragon Studios should get Rick Dakan on the phone and beg him to come back.

He's gonna scream and whine and complain about it until it gets pulled from the market, because if you disagree with him then clearly, you are wrong!
  14. So after this, we're definitely going to get Leviathan Mastery, right?

I so want to be able to cast [summon bigger fish].

Yes, because if you're not smiting foes each and every nanosecond that you are logged into the game, then you might as well uninstall it and set your computer on fire, right?

And it was Aurora, not Swan.
Now, they need to make a picture of Positron being sworn in as leader of the Freedom Phalanx in an emergency ceremony while on a plane.
  17. You know what's ironic? I don't have a single character for which this power would be even remotely appropriate.

The story I made up for my Warshade on Virtue is that she's a former demon who renounced her evil ways. She was kicked out of hell (or whatever the bad place is called in this game) and became mortal, and lost all of her infernal powers, making her human. While no longer possessing any powers, she still retained her infernal knowledge. The angels attempted to guide her along her new destiny then, as she signed up as a hero in Paragon City and attempted to dispense justice. It was pretty hard for her though, because she had no power anymore and she was used to that.

Then along came the Kheldians, and their need to inhabit human hosts on this planet. She learned of this and decided that was what she needed, because she was way too frustrated trying to be a hero in a super powered world with no powers of her own like she used to have. The angels thought it wasn't such a great idea, because they felt she should by doing everything on her own. But she found a kindred spirit in a Warshade who, like her, had renounced her former ways and was now trying to atone for a lifetime of evildoing. Before anyone else had a chance to intervene, they decided to merge with one another. Their personalities complimented each other so well, that by now they've essentially fused into a single entity.

Well... it sounded like a neat idea when I first came up with it anyway, LOL.

The person who introduced me to this game was also a part of its beta community and posted on those boards, and played CoH/CoV up until a few years ago. He doesn't play here anymore. He originally went off to be with our Challenging Opposition, but has recently been seen in a galaxy far, far away.

It's interesting to note that this is where true evil lies. Those mustache twirling cardboard cutouts are entirely fake, as no one ever really believes they are evil. The evil ones are always the ones that oppose you, and who are not like you.

It may take a long time for it to happen, but if such technological progression continues, then it's guaranteed to happen; whether by accident or on purpose, or even both at once. That's when the "it's just a toaster" attitude will go from being merely silly to being downright dangerous. They will not just fail to recognize the soul in the machine, they will outright deny its existence. It's easy to destroy something if you're convinced that it has no feelings, or that those feelings do not matter. All the while those doing the destroying will proclaim to be the "good guys".

It reminds me of a passage from the book of Romans: "What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?" In the end, I'm afraid that such closed mindedness will be the death of us all.
  24. Was Numina originally a player's actual character that they played with, or did that player just make her up for the contest? I wasn't around for CoH's beta so I have no idea.

I'm just wondering why people are assuming that the winner would lose access to the character they've submitted, though I haven't read the linked article yet. I suppose though, it would be funny if you were still allowed to play it, and you stood right next to the NPC trainer of that same character.

Anyways, I'd vote for Coyote to be inducted into the Freedom Phalanx.
