Wait, were people expecting this to be a serious show?
I figured they were goin' more for "crazy/funny". -
Sexism DOES exist in comics today. But then, sexism exists in just about every entertainment medium; to women and men (though a smaller amount to men, of course).
I think the reason it may appear more pronounced in comics is because of it's very nature. Actresses do many things to make themselves look like the supposed ideal, but they're still only human. With comics (and animation) that roadblock doesn't exist, so female characters can be stylized to the artist's content.
I really don't see comics as any worse than movies. Maybe the ratios are smaller, but only because the comic business is smaller than the movie business. After all, in most movies the protagonists are attractive people with only the secondary characters being "permitted" to be less than stellar looking. But in comics, the secondary characters in one book are often the primary characters in another book, resulting in a universe of fashion models.
Also, on the topic of Golden Age comics, remember that the ones we have access to are probably only a fraction of what was actually put out. And further, the stuff that rose above the rest would be what was preserved more. The result being that we get more of a "premium look" at Golden Age comics more so than the Silver Age.
I really don't think sexism is that big a problem in modern comics. Sure, it's always important to work toward improvement, but I think we're getting along pretty good. After all, look at Runaways which featured Gert; a bespeckled, pudgy girl who wore rather frumpy clothes. And she was the AWESOMEST character EVER!!
There were rumors that they killed her off, but those are obviously wrong.
Yup. Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Couldn't be wronger.
Total BS. -
"Together we can be justice" has made it onto the list of my favorite sayings.

Quote:A bit too much shaky-cam for my tastes. The whole Bourne series was fantastic, I think that Supremacy was the best though. Just a great flick through and through. And they were awesome because they could be fun action flicks that were still intelligent and inventive, good acting, intrigue, a few layers to them. Fantastic movies and Damon rocked that role.

It makes me sad that this does not exist.
I didn't think it possible for Harley to look any more adorable, but in overalls.....?
DC you sons of *****es! -
Quote:This is why so many games now come with free DLC if you buy them new.For games... in all reality... most people buy their games at game stop used and as such they are not giving any money to the makers and thus it makes no difference to the makers whether you buy the game used or torrented...
A cheap tactic perhaps, but you can't really blame them. And honestly, GameStop's used game market is so insulting anyway, I'd almost rather get used by the game company as opposed to the store. -
Quote:Though perhaps looking technological, Marvel Asgard still operated entirely on magic. It's just the Jack Kirby designs; they all tend to have that look. Same thing for the eye-patch. Odin often wore an ornate, metallic eye-patch that just sorta stuck to his face.Ã…sgard is highly technological?
what the heck is that in Odin's eye?
he gave his eye to gain wisdom... none of the myths say replaced his friggin eye with a USB memory stick.
Comparing it to the original myth is a lesson in futility. After all, Thor's supposed to have red hair and a beard. -
Oh please, Mike Rowe is MUCH dreamier than any of those other guys.

Quote:I'm going to offer a counterpoint. Also, assume that this reply refers solely to the movie as the book differs quite a bit.For the movie's ending to worked they really needed us to believe Scott and ramona's relationship had some legs to it. That never came across....as he says he loves her...like based off of what? Sorry the ending is epic fail. I expected it to go that way...but I still thought was quite lame. Nothing any one in this thread can justify that as there's litterally nothing that shows Ramona and Scott belong together. There's never any chemistry as Scott just comes across as the ultimate pity F*** and nothing more. How is a pity f*** a happy ending?
Perhaps Ramona and Scott's relationship didn't come off very well in the movie, but I would posit that neither did Scott and Knives'. Apart from their team-up against Gideon, their relationship seemed to be based entirely on Knives' hero-worship.
Knives thought Scott was awesome, and Scott liked her thinking he was awesome. He also mentioned being amused by her high school drama. Their dynamic just never seemed very deep.
Which I felt was the point of Scott and Ramona's relationship. It was awkward, hard, and ****ed up beyond belief, but it was also something that made Scott (the quintessintial slacker) finally man up and face his shortcomings. Something Knives would never have made him do since, to her, he had no shortcomings.
Now, this was definitely fleshed out more in the comic, but I thought the movie hinted at it pretty well too. But maybe I just felt that way cause I HAD read the comic first. Who knows. -
My stock answer for fantasy books is always Terry Pratchett. Most notably the ones starring Death or the Watch.
One series I've enjoyed are the Artemis Fowl books. They're more for younger readers, but are well written enough that adults can enjoy them too. Plus they have a really novel twist on fairies, dwarves, and other such mythical creatures.
Of course, my suggestions lack the darker overtones of the Lovecraftian themes you mentioned, but they ARE very good at world-building. And something a little lighter is always fun once in awhile. -
Quote:Maybe this is why I've heard so many people say the original isn't as good as they remember it.Except that Tron is all about the visuals. That's what made the original stand out.
But seriously, there's a difference between focusing on the visuals and relying on them to carry the movie. And that focus on the visuals didn't even work out in my opinion; as noted in my and others points about the lackluster action scenes.
And just to reiterate, I DID enjoy the movie. I'm just listing the things I was disappointed in and hope are improved on in any possible sequels. Something I could do with any movie, even ones that are my favorites. -
Quote:It doesn't need to blow my mind, it just needs to reach outside of the comfort zone. Which isn't that difficult, even for a relatively simple action movie. Die Hard did this with John McClane's relative vulnerability and the running joke of his feet. The Transporter did it with their fight choreography and set pieces. The Incredibles did it by going the extra mile with the story. You sound a lot like my brother and several other people I've talked with. As with all over-hyped movies... people go in to the movie expecting for their minds to be blown away... and when it wasn't... they blame the movie for not going far enough.
Every movie can't revolutionize the genre, but they can let off a firecracker or two. Tron Legacy just seemed very "by the numbers". I think perhaps they were resting on the visuals too much. With something as unique looking as Tron, that's certainly a temptation, but it still only goes so far. -
At the moment maybe. Hercules was mainstream earlier in his career and even had a bit of a comeback recently. Ares was one of the more popular member of the Avengers.
But mostly, my examples were just to show that the fantasy aesthetic is alive and well in superhero comics. That's what I love about them. The genre is so broad that it incorporates everything from fantasy to steampunk to cyperpunk to noir and so on.
Heck, we've already got armor, swords, and shields in the costume creator; why WOULDN'T we want Conan-style musclature to go along with it?
As for not seeing the physical oddities I mentioned.... well, I can't really say anything to that. It seemed unmissable to me. If I have the time and motivation later, maybe I'll take a screenshot of what I'm talking about. -
Quote:My rebuttal:My point on Sam's examples, was that they just seemed fantasy based. That was all.
He shows those, and I see "I want City of Medevil Fantasy" as the basis for the suggestion.
And even leaving out the fantasy argument, I've tried a couple times to make a female bruiser on COH, but always ended up deleting her cause she never looked right. Turning up the Physique slider only made her look like a caricature of Chun-li. Huge thighs and chest with stick arms and teeny, tiny Barbie-hands. -
Quote:I'll second this.I just didn't see what the hype was about. Wasn't a terrible movie, but I felt like the scene with the light cycles were lacking, and the disc throwing scenes could have been so much more.
Just saw it yesterday. It wasn't bad. Good visuals and a workable if not impressive story. As mentioned above, I was a little disappointed that some of the action didn't ramp up any more than it did. Everything was used well, but none of it really pushed any envelopes.
Also like others, I felt a little gipped as far as Tron's role in the film. Even having heard others talk about it before hand, I still felt like there should have been more of a payoff with him. I suppose they were saving it for the sequel maybe.
I also really wanted more about the ISOs. Like Tron, we kinda get a taste of them and their story, but never really get anything meaty outta it. This is more of a personal taste kinda thing, but what else would you expect from a Mass Effect fanatic. "Oh, this is kinda interesting. Let me stop and examine it from all angles."
So, for me, the movie did have it's shortcomings, but it DID spark an interest in me to see more of that world. Not bad. Hopefully, if they make a sequel, they'll build on what they've started and really knock it outta the park. -
My biggest problem with the twins was that they were simply horrible, annoying characters.

Quote:That needs to be a mini-series right now!Are they also going to have a team consisting of Wolverine, Wolverine, Wolverine, and Wolverine?
The Watcher enlists the aid of Wolverine, Days of Future Past Wolverine, Vampire Wolverine, and X-Babies Wolverine in order to stop some cosmic threat. Something involving Galactus or Dormammu or Mephisto. The only stipulation is that the Wolvie-Team must fight an army of murderous fluffy, pink bunnies at some point. -

My biggest disappointment with the movie?
No mention of Roxie being half-ninja. -
Quote:The best part of those videos is Wolverine's accent.
