  1. Commander

    Morning all

    Howdy do?

Just wanted to officially say hello to ya'll. I think I only know a handful of Protectorites but I hope that to change (either for the good or the bad.)

I've been playing over on Virtue for the past 5 years and after doing some occasional teaming with kidengineer and the RSF Regulators crew, I decided to make my stay on Protector a more permanent thing. That and I'm also close to running out of character slots on Virtue as well.

For those that care (or don't):

I am a Leo born on the Virgo cusp (it sickens me that I know that), a "badger", a terriffic cuddler, use parentheses and ellipses way too often..., have 2 US accounts and an EU account, have a cat named Miss Furrs, have grown to love the Clamato + Budweiser concoction known as the "Chelada," and I'm one of two known people to be fan of the early 80's film, "Midnight Madness."

Anyway, just wanted to say hello to all. I know that someone on Protector hates me already since I received a negative feedback telling me so. Oh well.

Catcha later and probably see you in game!
  2. i16 patch is, well, patching! 5 hours to go!!!
  3. Yep, i16 is patching as I type. 5 hours from now it's a mad dash to the Tailor's for a new custom paint job! Woo hoo!

I've started making alts on Protector and I've got an EU account where I occasionally play on the Union server. But most of my time will be on Protector with the RSF Regulars crew.

I did make an alt on Freedom, but I think he got cooties the second he stepped into Atlas :P

    Arachnos Commander, laid to rest

    September 15, 2009

Grandville (AN) - The body of the Arachnos Commander, Cyrus Adain, departed from Grandville at 12:08am (EST) aboard the Arachnos Flyer, Omega. The ship, which was created for inter-dimensional combat, was modified to hold a private ceremony onboard. Official representatives of Arachnos, as well as family, are accompanying the casket to its final destination where the Commander will be laid to rest.

At the request of Commander Adain, his remains will be held inside a private mausoleum on an ‘R Class’ planet in the dimension designated as Psi Delta 7-2, nicknamed “Utopia Minor” by Arachnos Officials. Although the guardians of the planet hold no allegiance to Arachnos, they allow use for ceremonies of high ranking officers. This event marks the first burial of a non-inhabitant of the planet.

Details of Commander Adain’s death have not been made public as of printing.

The Commander is survived by two brothers, Alex Adain of Natal, Brazil, and Michael Adain of Boston, MA; two sisters, Christine (Adain) Bragg of Reno, NV, and Heather Adain of Nashua, NH; an adopted sister; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Crey’s Foundation of Hope Charity, 18 North-Northwest Crimson Cove, Nerva Archipelago 09914.

    OOC:

Five years ago, today, I began my journey into the unknown when I started my City of Heroes subscription. Man, I still can’t believe it’s been five years!

As I look back on yesterday, I feel a sense of accomplishment. Not only did I “ding” my 31st level 50, but I finally accomplished my goal of getting one of every AT to level 50. To put the cherry on the sundae, my main badge-hunting villain, Arachnos Commander, earned 2 billion infamy yesterday, thereby earning the Leader Badge.

My accomplishments, the day before my five year anniversary, showed me that I can actually set goals and complete them. Either that, it shows that I have WAY too much free time on my hands

I’ve made many friends, and enemies, throughout my time on Virtue. In fact, it was a longtime friend that coaxed me into trying this game. Of course, as soon as I became addicted, she left to try out other games. As City of Heroes was the first MMO I had ever tried, I knew it would always be my favorite.

But, as my character slots dwindle down to my last five, I have decided that I have accomplished all I can on Virtue. So, it saddens me to say, it is time to move on…

Wait… you think that I’m leaving the game? Gimme a break! My new 14 month subscription starts today!

No, I’m not leaving, just moving servers! I figure that the last five slots I have on Virtue will be saved for the Going Rogue expansion. And with the cost of moving unused alts to another server, I’m just going to keep them on Virtue until they allow us to create more than 36 characters per server.

So, why did I kill off my main alt, the Arachnos Commander? Well, there isn’t much more I can do with him. He’s four years old, has 583 badges (once i16 hits he will have all known villain badges except some day jobs and veteran), and really had no story of his own. I figured it was the right time to put him to rest. I might decide to resurrect him down the line, but never will he hold the title of “Arachnos Commander” again. That chapter of his life is over and is resting inside a mausoleum.

I want to thank all of the friends and acquaintances that I’ve met on my “Virtuous” journey. I especially want to thank Shannon aka. Misfortune, Jason aka. Ley Line Walker, Belle, Sandolphan, Xad, Hasdrabul Skaras, Virtue United for making my nights of badge hunting entertaining, the entire cast and crew (past and present) of the Arachnos Elite, all of the Developers for giving me this home on the interwebs, and a special thanks to Ara, because, without her I would have never met my two best friends, Kegan and Andra.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my accomplishments with you before moving to my new home. Catcha all on the flipside!

And NO! You can't have my stuff! It's all sitting neatly in storage for the day I either move alts or get more character slots!
  6. A few months ago I decided to respec my elec/elec Brute. This time I decided against Taunt mainly because I'm not the type to hold back and pull. I'm a "jump in the middle of a mob and grab aggro" type.

I noticed that, when jumping in the center and immediately using Power Sink, the entire mob is aggroed to me and drains each enemy to 1/2 the endurance. So, basically, it's two attacks in one.

When teaming today, the players on the team were like, "wth are you doing?" When I told them I did it this way comments ranged from "That's awesome" to "That's stupid."

I told them that doing it this way immediately drains the mobs of endurance as well and hooks aggro onto me, leaving them a safe distance for ranged as well as melee attacks.

Anyone else do this? Thoughts? Good, bad, indifferent?
  7. 9 hours later and still major mapserving on Virtue...

    *sadpanda*
  8. Getting same problems on Virtue, also a West Coast server. It's been happening for a couple of hours for me.
  9. Nope. Chances are that you're feeling after effects of the master account planned outage today. If that's the case, the only thing to do is wait for support to fix it.

  11. Wait? So we can have spaces in our names now? Nice!

All I have to say... if that cast was in the actual movie, I'd be a HELL of a lot more impressed. I mean.. Chuck Lidell as Gung Ho, Henry Rollins as Duke, and Julianne Moore as Scarlett... wow!

JJ, do you realize that Hama is "just" a writer? He wasn't the creator. The folks at Hasbro created every comic book character based on a pre-existing concept toy. Each character had a background created by Hasbro.

Having a quote from him is like having a quote from a guy that worked catering on the set of the Matrix. He worked for Marvel, writing scripts based on the ideas of others.

    So, here's a quote from me, k?

"The Hama fanboiz need to get a life."

But you, like I, are entitled to your opinion.

Are you complaining about the tweaks to Baroness and Duke? A third string character like Ripcord?! For crying out loud, we got a Sargent Slaughter cameo! Who cares if the Joes had matching outfits in the first movie, and some backgrounds were tweaked. (Would you rather Cobra Commander was a used car salesman?!) You're making this out to be a lot worse than it was

I'll give you Cobra Commander's goofball mask though, but they even went so far as to give Destro a mask right out of the comics at the end.

As far as the GI Joe canon goes, I can think of at LEAST three different explanations (And that's in addition to the one in the movie.) from various cartoons and comics as to why Snake Eyes doesn't talk, and I've read a fraction of the comics that were listed earlier in the thread.
What's wrong with Cobra Commander having been a used car dealer? Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer before he was President. The idea is that the original story, albeit far fetched, had merit (in the GI Joe universe.)

The background were not 'tweaked'. They were paved over. Cobra Commander WAS NOT the brother of the Baroness. The Baroness wasn't the fiancee' of Duke. Duke wasn't every going to be brothers with Cobra Commander.

But I can see where people would rather smile and nod because culture has dumbed down things to the point where it's okay to ignore canon.

    Let me ask you this:

If CoH totally broke canon and rewrote the entire thing to the point where it was nothing like we've learned, would you be happy? Or should I just say, "Hmm.. you've played for 5 years and pumped your money into this product... too bad! They aren't making this for you anymore... it's now marketed to a whole new demographic. Get over it."

The same can be said for people ruining a perfect formula. Case and Point: "New Coke." The only problem is when a movie bombs (or doesn't do well with the critics) they don't get a chance to remake it. They don't get to say, "Well, let's reintroduce you to Coke Classic!" The only exception to a failure of a movie to be remade is "Hulk."

Now, my personal problem with the movie is just that.. a personal one. Back in the early 80's I was lucky to live close to the Rhode Island/Massachusetts state line and was lucky enough to have an aunt that worked for Hasbro. I, along with about 100 of other kids, were "toy testers" for the GI Joe (and transformers) lines. We got to test the products that we thought worked. Remember, with Hasbro, it was a toy before they licensed their comic book.

The things that made GI Joe popular was the things that we helped decide on. Sure, looking back, an orange and purple tank was goofy, but it was the 80's.

But the things that we were asked to decide on were things that were "inspiring" to us. Things that taught a good message. Things that made you say, "I want to join the Army because GI Joe made me believe in freedom."

Looking at this movie, the point is lost. There is nothing inspiring. There is nothing to see and say, "Hey, I want to join the Army because GI Joe made me believe in Freedom." There is no good and evil in this movie because the "Joe's" do as much harm as they do good. (Mainly putting civilians in harms way instead of protecting them.)

Now, if they called this movie "Bizzarro GI Joe" I'd think the concept was done well.
  17. Understood that the term GI Joe has had many different backgrounds, except I'm not talking about anything other than the Habsro/Marvel storyline, which the movie is supposed to follow (ie: the trademarked and owned property of Hasbro, Inc.)

GI Joe and Cobra have a set history, all of which every other Marvel/Hasbro (even Dark Horse) fed off of. GI Joe is Good; Cobra is Bad. Except this time, this movie, they changed it. They changed the whole history. The changed everything that made the Marvel/Hasbro line unique. Even the GI Joe: Resolute series fed off what is considered GI Joe canon, then turning Duke evil and having him join Cobra.

Even the original GI Joe from Hasbro (the 12 inch doll) had a story that evolved into the Marvel Comics era.

But, this movie, though it made some brief mentions to some childhood references, did not do the story of the formation of GI Joe and Cobra any justice. I mean, if you are going to tell the story, you tell it the tried and true way.

The lore of GI Joe never changed. The story just went into different paths; different directions. If this is what the movie tried to portay, then I would have no problem with it. But this isn't what the movie did. It paved over the the lore. It reinvented every single thing about GI Joe and Cobra. Go back and look at the different storylines that you mentioned. GI Joe met the Transformers, but that didn't rewrite GI Joe's history. The Dark Horse comics even picked up where the Marvel line left off.

You can spin it any way you want. The fact is that they reinvented the story of GI Joe and Cobra. Scratch that... they POORLY reinvented the story of GI Joe and Cobra. I mean, seriously... they reinvented Snake Eyes, they reinvented how Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow met, they reinvented the Baroness, Cobra Commander, Destro, Scarlett, Trip-Wire... all things that they reinvented didn't need to be because it was never a failure.

I hope they find a new set of writers and director for the sequal, because I have a strange feeling they are going to reinvent the wheel.

  18. What I find interesting is that all of my UK born friends, the thing the love the best from the U.S. is anything Reeses'. (Pieces, Nutrageous, and even the Peanut Butter Cup.)
  19. Commander

    So who's going?

Well, since I play on Protector now too, I figure I'd comment here.

Horrible beyond belief, espeically for hardcore (sad, huh?) fans of GI Joe and Cobra.

Link to my review on the Virtue forums: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...7&postcount=15

It does contain a spoiler or two (maybe three), so if you don't want to know, well, you know the drill. The spoilers were only added because I needed to stress why the movie was bad.

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in as well.
  20. As a hardcore fan of the original GI Joe series/comic, I have to say that this movie was the worst GOD-AWEFUL thing I have ever seen. 99% of the story was "original" had had nothing to do with the original series. If they took away every name of the Joes and Cobra, you'd think this was any other mildly entertaining action movie.

Now, believe me, I LOVE the original story of GI Joe vs Cobra. But this thing was so the opposite of the original series, it made my stomach knot up.

SPOILER ALERT *Do not read past here if you don't want to know...*

My belief: If you are going to 'recreate' something as iconic as GI Joe, don't [censored] on the fans that grew up with it. Don't make us feel like the hours we spent, immersing ourselves in their world, was wasted. Don't make us leave, scratching our head, thinking "Cobra Commander and the Baroness are brother and sister? Wait, the Commander is a doctor too? When the [censored] did that happen?"

I think that this movie set back GI Joe from what it should have been. Now it's just a laughing stock, take the money and run, box office manure pile!

Oh, by the way... Cobra Commander ALWAYS WORE A MASK... ALWAYS!!
